And the three of us were able to spend a year together at a research center, and the question we came up with was: Can you be creative and humane at the same time? Creative means having your mind go free, think about all sorts of things, try them out. Nothing is taboo, nothing is off limits. But at the same time, can you do it in a way that's humane and ethical and avoids, for example, creating the Einstein equation, which was a brilliant physics explanation, but also led to nuclear weapons.And similarly with cracking genetic code in any way. And we thought this was a good question, but we weren't wise enough to come up with an answer. So that's why we spent 10 years, roughly from 1995 to 2005, interviewing about 1, 500 people from nine different professions. And it was from that very intensive and extensive study that we came up with the three E's of good work. Excellence, engagement, and ethics. Since then, my research group at Harvard has called this The Good Project. And The Good Project is looking at the development of a moral and ethical stance as young as the age of three or four, preschool, all the way to professions and middle life. If we're trying to decide what policy to cover, whether it's an economic policy about interest rates, or whether - we're talking now during the beginning of the war in the Middle East - what policies to follow militarily, economically, and ethically. For that matter, do we entrust that to some kind of a computational system, or is this something that human judgment needs to be brought to bear? And if so, how and at what point? And these are quintessential synthesizing questions. You can't just look up and say, 'Well, what should we do with the Gaza Strip? Or what should we do in Japan, which has had low interest rates, but the rest of the world has got very high inflation.' These are not things where we just want to press a button and get the answer. These are things we want to discuss and debate and review and maybe even pit one large language instrument against another and see do they come up with the same answers. And since then, I've been focused with colleagues on what we call good work and good citizenship. And our study of good work, we studied nine different professionals dealing from law and medicine to journalism to teaching. And we found out people who were admired and to find out why these professionals were admired. And we found out they were admired for three things. One, how excellently they carried out their work. And of course, that's important. Number two, how engaged they were. To what extent do they really like their work, want to do it, and feel good about being at work rather than dreading it? And three, and what you're touching on, did they carry out the work in an ethical way? Now, when it's absolutely clear what to do in a situation, then you don't call it ethical. Ethical is what do you do when a situation is complicated? Let's say you're a lawyer and you find that the client lies to you. Do you let the client lie on the stand? Or do you say, 'No, I'm not going to be your lawyer if you're going to lie.' If you're a doctor, and there are two people who have the same injury and one is a relative and the other is a stranger, what do you do? If you're a journalist, and you're covering a story and you see a crime occurring, should you remain a journalist and cover it? Or should you call the police and become an accessory? So we're very, very interested in how people deal with ethical issues. Now, as you are anticipating. The Question Isn't How Intelligent Are You, But How Are You Intelligent? Multiple Intelligences is a theory that was introduced by Harvard Professor Howard Gardner in his 1983 book “Frames of Mind: The Theory of Intelligences”. He proposed that intelligence isn't a fixed number, as was measured by an IQ test. Rather, he suggested seven different types of intelligence, of which each person has a unique combination to draw upon. Strength demonstrated in the different expressions of intelligence would make life and career choices easier if aligned. Let's explore and discover if that theory still holds water.

Have you ever had that moment where you get hit with an ah-ha moment that either makes you second guess every single moment of your life or validates every moment of your life? You think to yourself, "Holy shit... nothing is wrong with me, afterall - I'm just... xyz, and it's not my weakness, it's actually my strength!" Yep, that's what I went through recently after I listened to an episode of The Goal Digger Podcast with ADHD entrepreneur, Tracy Otsuka. It was the first time I had heard a successful woman recount her experiences and struggles growing up, working a 9-5 job and starting her own business in a way that I, not only understood but, lived firsthand. My whole life I have wondered why I felt unmotivated, lazy and jealous of other students/employees who could just follow the damn rules. My internal dialog was always beating me down because I, like most, was raised in a society and educational system that tells us, if we aren't doing well in school we won't do well in life. I call BULLSHIT. According to 'In Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences' (1983) and its sequels, there are 8 (9 if you count spiritual) different types of intelligence, yet our schools historically focus on verbal-linguistic or mathematical-logical intelligences so... what about the rest of us? Bueller?....Beuller? To all of my fellow, former, D + C students... enough with the excuses they have given us, we are the ones who have the vision, we create the things, and start the companies... statistically speaking, the Valedictorians are just the ones who work for those companies. If you, or even your kid, have ever struggled in school, work or maybe wondered why things always seemed easier for "everyone else" this episode is for you.

Many experts find that Howard Gardner’s book Frames of Mind was a rare publishing phenomenon—a mind-changer. Widely read by the general public as well as educators, it laid out Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences: the idea that rather than seeing human intelligence as dominated by a single general ability, it could actually be differentiated into modalities. Now, nearly four decades after Frames of Mind was first published, Gardner joined us to share thoughts from his book A Synthesizing Mind, reflecting on his own intellectual development, tracing his evolution from bookish child to eager college student to disengaged graduate student to Harvard professor. Having spent his career focused on human minds in general, now he considers his own mind, and concludes that his is a “synthesizing mind,” with the ability to survey experiences and data across a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. Gardner invited us to an insightful discussion about different types of intelligences—including and especially his own—and how a synthesizing mind could be particularly valuable at this time. Autism is the fastest growing developmental diagnosis. It is more often diagnosed in children than diabetes, HIV and cancer combined.
