Send Wilk a text with your feedback! The Importance of Intrapersonal Empowerment in Bettering Civil DiscourseToday, I'm excited to introduce Erec Smith, another fellow member of the board of advisors at the ProHuman Foundation and a powerful voice for true empowerment and personal accountability, especially in today's social climate. Erec is a research fellow at the Cato Institute and a former Associate Professor of Rhetoric at York College of Pennsylvania. His work explores how rhetoric influences our perspectives on anti-racism, activism, and the foundations of a free, pluralistic, and civil society. But Erec's reach goes beyond the classroom. He's a co-founder of Free Black Thought, a nonprofit that's challenging the status quo by celebrating viewpoint diversity within Black communities. Through their Journal of Free Black Thought, they share everything from poetry to scholarly work—bringing out the voices of artists, writers, academics, and public intellectuals often overlooked by mainstream media. In today's conversation, Erec and I dig into some critical ideas about personal empowerment and the dangers of a victim narrative. One of Erec's key messages is the importance of choosing to be a “victor” in our own lives, rather than seeing ourselves as victims. He's observed that the victim narrative, while powerful, often breeds resentment rather than resilience, which ultimately disempowers us.We also explore some big questions: What does real equity look like, and can some equity efforts inadvertently lead to more division? Erec shares how outreach programs, when done right, prepare young people to navigate and thrive in college—not just to check boxes but to actually feel empowered.Erec's insights on intrapersonal empowerment really hit home. He believes that the path to civil discourse—and to bridging divides—is through strengthening the individual first. It's only when we have strong, accountable individuals that we can come together with others to reach common goals and view no group as a monolith. At the heart of Erec's message is this: through personal accountability and a commitment to working together, we can overcome almost anything.Learn more about and connect with Erec Smith by checking out the full show notes for this episode at www.DeWhat have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people. That begins with each of us as individuals. Be kind to one another. There are four layers that make up every organization (that is, a group of people gathered together in a structured manner for a specific purpose): Material - the vision, job descriptions...you can put it on paper Group norms - collective habits that connect the material pieces together Interpersonal - between two or more people Intrapersonal - going on inside of me - self-differentiation These four layers are always simultaneously present in everything the organization does.  Challenges occur when one layer isn't functioning well or otherwise functioning layers aren't aligned. The work of organizational development is fundamentally about discerning where the pressure points are (given these 4 layers) and then partnering with organizational leaders to make needed shifts. Group training, individual coaching, and leadership team development are simply different means to work toward this same end (and therefore should reflect the same philosophy). Lee Riley uses his coaching skills to help organizations develop their culture and leadership.  He recently joined the University of Washington part-time as a training and organizational development consultant. It has always been a consistent contributor to growth and economic activity. An advantage of establishing a network of people with common interests is mentorship. Phillip shares how you can gain valuable insight from other people's experiences. Having a mentor doesn't need to be a formal thing. You can achieve it just by reaching out to the people you trust and asking for their expert opinion.Phillip talks about the value of not only helping others to develop but also of our own self-development. He talks about the power of self-awareness and how effective that can be. Being aware of your own areas of opportunity allows you to improve. It starts by recognizing your capability to improve and therefore not viewing yourself as a helpless victim.Phillip also discusses the importance of podcasting in building branding and community. Podcasting allows for a great exchange of ideas through networking. It also provides a forum for targeted audiences to learn about your expertise. Rafael Cortina interviews John Hovell John Hovell is the Co-Founder of Stratactical and is a self-described Relational-Organizational-Gestalt expert. John opines that you “cannot take a group (or organization) where you have not gone yourself.” John learned through his organizational development (OD) practice that you don't want to make the client wrong but, rather, meet the client halfway. He is most passionate about knowledge development, organizational development, and Relational-Organizational-Gestalt consulting. John pays attention to the small and big details, including what is going on inside his body, within himself, within groups, and between groups. He looks at “levels of system.” Specifically, he looks at the system by considering the following realms: Intrapersonal, interpersonal, subgroup, whole system, bounded system, etc. He likens the OD perspective to Gestalt work. He looks at “self” as an instrument for change and illumination. John discusses his overall purpose: “This body, experience, and consciousness is a gift. Continuing our conversation and learning around skills and skill development, we now dive into the two broad categories of Soft Skills:Intrapersonal Skills and Interpersonal SkillsIn this episode, Michel clearly defines these two sets of soft skills and highlights the benefits of developing both.Starting with intrapersonal skills, these are the personal skills that help us to get to know and manage ourselves better.Working on your intrapersonal skills allows you to establish priorities, manage workloads and even choose the right career. Interpersonal skills, as defined by Daniel Goldman, is simply social intelligence.Developing these interpersonal skills guides us to grow within our teams and our communities, as these skills include listening, speaking, empathy and overall "people" skills. It's about using this combination of skills to get to know and better serve the needs of our diverse clients, customers, employees and other stakeholders. While interpersonal skills play a critical role in our ability to build strong, meaningful, relationships, it's intrapersonal skills that help us to get to know ourselves better, so that we can move with confidence and make better decisions. In a global economy with thousands of people with the same credentials, soft skills are the great differentiatorsFor more information on sharpening these ever-important soft skills, please join the Upskill Community HERE.Thank you for listening and sharing!

Today's episode is an important conversation that NEEDS to be in podcast form. I've touched on thin privilege on Instagram posts and with guests on the show, but I wanted an entire episode dedicated to the subject.   Here's what I want you to understand about thin privilege: Your body image struggles are real no matter your size. Your experience and struggles are real and valid. But we have to be willing to look at our privileges in all situations, body image and how this impacts our relationship with food, included.   I used to promote myself as the “body positive dietitian” and I now realize how much of a mistake on wording that was. That was taking a movement that wasn't created for me. And honestly ignorance on my part thinking me as a size 10 was not accepted. I hope this episode helps you see that your experiences are real and true and you are not alone in not accepting your body. Yet, as with any privilege we hold, it's not your fault or something you should feel guilty about. It's about recognizing that there's some experiences we may never be able to understand.   There are three types of fat phobia, that I've learned from Virgie Tovar (click here to listen to her episode on the podcast). A person in a thin body can experience INTRApersonal struggles as we all fear becoming fat in our society that tells us it's the worst thing in the world to happen to our bodies. But a thin body won't experience interpersonal and institutionalized fat phobia. This helps explain thin privilege in a meaningful way- that yes, your experiences are real, but these are two major areas you likely will never experience or understand if you live in a thin body.   Resources for you: Learn more about our services at Nourishing Minds Nutrition.
