Today, Changing Our World‘s Jim Friend talks with Fr. Don Zeiler, Pastor of St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Community in McKinney, Texas. Fr. Don talks about how his parish has adapted their services to meet the needs of their community throughout this crisis. St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Community In 1996 a new Catholic parish in McKinney was established, with word came that Fr. Greg Kelly (now Bishop Greg Kelly) had been assigned as pastor. Regular weekend Masses began on July 28, 1996, meeting in various MISD schools. In December 1996, the community received its official name, St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Community. Fr. Don Zeiler was welcomed as the second Pastor of St. Gabriel during the Masses on January 20, 2008.The fundraising campaign, “Raising the Walls,” kicked off in the fall of 2013, led by Changing Our World. With input from parishioners and the Executive Committee and guided by the vision of Fr. Don for the church to be a teaching and evangelizing tool, the drawings and plans for our Permanent Worship Space were designed. The parish officially broke ground for the new sanctuary on May 15, 2016.The new church home is now a reality! They dedicated the church and altar on February 23, 2019. The founding pastor, Bishop Greg Kelly, celebrated the Mass, and it was a truly special moment for the parish. Carlos Bañuelos is a Family Support Liaison for Mesquite ISD, born in San Antonio to Mexican parents. When he was a child, his mother relied on food and low-income assistance programs to make ends meet while she continued learning English to enroll in college. Although they could have returned to Mexico after his parents divorced, he admires his mother's perseverance to earn a college degree to stay in the U.S. and make a living with her children. His upbringing helps him relate to the more than 1,000 MISD students identified as McKinney Vento or in foster care. Hear from Bañuelos, who is also a cancer survivor, as he talks about living a life of service and “doing what you can for others.”

Seven in 10 young people say they would tell a friend if they are having thoughts of suicide. Research also shows that peers have a greater impact as protective factors during adolescence than parents do. This is why the Hope Squad program focuses on training students to help their peers in schools across the U.S. On this episode of the Raising Joy, we're talking to Guidance and Counseling Coordinator Kasey Holder with Mansfield Independent School District, MISD student Kaylee Berger and Kristi Wiley with the Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation. They share how the program has changed the culture of school and why they think giving students tools to help their friends is saving lives.

Guest Peggy Brooks has served as the station manager of KEOM 88.5 FM for 14 of her 30-year tenure with the Mesquite ISD radio station. Before she retires this month, she shares a little history of the station and what makes it a unique opportunity for MISD students and our community. Hear how an MISD program for paraprofessionals to gain teaching certificates helped launch her distinguished career in radio. A similar program has just started in MISD.

Thanks to compassionate MISD administrators who believed in her even as an angry teen, Maxcie Taylor is poised to give back to the Mesquite community in a multi-level capacity. She's a 2014 graduate of Poteet and recently was crowned the 2022 Ms. Curve Texas Regency International.
