Diabetes Dialogue: Therapeutics, Technology, & Real-World Perspectives
In this episode of Diabetes Dialogue, co-hosts hosts Diana Isaacs, PharmD, an endocrine clinical pharmacist, director of Education and Training in Diabetes Technology, and co-director of Endocrine Disorders in Pregnancy at the Cleveland Clinic, and Natalie Bellini, DNP, program director of Diabetes Technology at University Hospitals Diabetes and Metabolic Care Center, discuss significant developments in diabetes care from May 2025, including Medtronic's restructured business model, Sequel Twiist's technological collaboration with Abbott, and Breakthrough T1D's efforts to advance early detection of type 1 diabetes (T1D) through national screening initiatives. The discussion opens with news of Medtronic's decision to spin off its diabetes division into a standalone entity, currently referred to as “New Diabetes Company.” While the final name is forthcoming, the move is intended to streamline operations and accelerate innovation within the diabetes space. The hosts highlight the company's promising technology pipeline, including the forthcoming 800 series insulin pump with full smartphone control and plans for a tubeless insulin delivery system. Both experts express optimism that the independence may foster greater agility in product development, enhance accessibility, and maintain a focus on user-centered design, including for populations with visual impairments. Next, Isaacs and Bellini examine the announcement of the Sequel Twiist partnership with Abbott to integrate continuous ketone monitoring (CKM) into a hybrid sensor, which is expected to function similarly to the FreeStyle Libre 3. This device, still in development, will provide real-time data on both glucose and ketone levels—a critical advance for people with type 1 diabetes using insulin pumps, who are at elevated risk for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). While excited about the potential for earlier DKA detection, Bellini emphasizes the importance of cost-effective implementation and integration with existing pump platforms. The episode concludes with coverage of Breakthrough T1D's advocacy before the US Preventive Services Task Force to support routine screening for T1D autoantibodies. The goal is to identify individuals in early stages of the disease to prevent DKA and misdiagnosis. The hosts note that despite advancements in understanding T1D progression, many patients remain undiagnosed until presenting with DKA or are mistakenly classified as having type 2 diabetes. Carolina Allen shares the op-ed she wrote for the Deseret News, Published May 10, 2025. https://www.deseret.com/opinion/2025/05/10/what-is-maternal-feminism/ including some parts that were not included in the published article. “Creating life is not only about giving birth, however miraculous that truly is. And when we say ‘maternal,' we are not only referring to women with children. We're also speaking of a maternal way of being — a capacity to see and fill needs, to nurture, and to lead with fierce compassion. This includes women who mother communities, mentor youth, and tend to their neighbors — all intentional women who shape our culture for the better.” “When we lift mothers, we fortify the foundation of society itself, recognizing that nurturing the next generation is not just a personal role but a sacred, collective calling.” “More than 500 million women and girls today suffer from period poverty because of the natural rhythms of their uniquely female bodies. Daughters are perceived as intrinsically inferior to sons and denied basic educational opportunities. Many are excluded from participation not only in public life, but are also found voiceless within the family context.” “At the same time, the commodification of female bodies persists with seven out of 10 victims of sex trafficking being women and girls. The Women's Stats Project, which tracks over 350 variables related to women's lives, confirms a powerful truth. The security and behavior of places we live are directly linked to the situation and safety of women within them. These are not peripheral issues. Recognizing biological realities is key to creating real solutions. Solutions that uplift women and in turn strengthen entire societies.” “This vision of feminism honors our differences without division; it honors our embodied reality as women, and embraces the spiritual depth that so often grounds our lives. No one is required to choose between public influence and private nurture. Rather, we can remain rooted in the belief that the home is the foundation of every society, and healing the world begins right there, around dinner tables and bedside prayers.” Join with Big Ocean Women - the world's leading Maternal Feminist movement! www.bigoceanwomen.org Start or join a WAVE. Dateline just leaked explosive evidence in the Bryan Kohberger case—and now the defense claims someone else did it. With the trial coming up late summer... is justice unraveling before it even begins? #STSNation, Welcome to Surviving the Survivor — the podcast that brings you the #BestGuests in all of #TrueCrime, covering the cases that matter most. Tonight, we dive into the Bryan Kohberger legal earthquake. First, the Dateline NBC special aired surveillance footage, phone pings, and graphic search histories—all evidence that may have been under court seal. Now, Judge Steven Hippler says the court's gag order was “likely” violated, a special prosecutor may be appointed, and the entire case could be jeopardized. Then came another curveball: At a May 15 hearing, Kohberger's defense dropped a sealed motion suggesting “alternate perpetrators” may be to blame. The judge wasn't buying it—at least not yet. He's demanding actual evidence before deciding whether the theory will be admissible. Meanwhile, victim families are speaking out. Angela Navejas, mother of Madison Mogen's best friend, says the defense is weaponizing distraction while ignoring the pain of the victims' loved ones. The Goncalves family posted: “One step forward, two steps back.” Is this trial about to implode?⸻ #Support the show:All Things STS: Https://linktr.ee/stspodcastGet Joel's Book: Https://amzn.to/48GwbLxSupport the show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SurvivingTheSurvivorCatch us live on YouTube: Surviving The Survivor: #BestGuests in True Crime - YouTubeVenmo Donations: @STSPodcast

What were the top musical hits of Shakespeare's England? What lyrics were stuck in people's heads? What stories did they sing on repeat? The 100 Ballads project is a deep dive into the hits of early modern England—a kind of 17th-century Billboard Hot 100. Drawing from thousands of surviving printed ballads, researchers Angela McShane and Christopher Marsh have ranked the most popular songs of the period. These broadsides—cheaply printed sheets sold for a penny—offer surprising insight into the period's interests, humor, and even news headlines. McShane and Marsh discuss what these ballads tell us about moral norms, sensationalism, and everyday life. Some are instructive, some are bawdy, and some are unexpectedly feminist. This episode brings to life the soundscape of Shakespeare's world with clips from newly recorded versions of the most popular ballads and a look at how the team developed their ranking system. >> Explore the project and hear the songs yourself at www.100ballads.org Christopher Marsh is Professor of Cultural History at Queen's University, Belfast. He has published extensively on various aspects of society and culture in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. His most relevant book in relation to the 100 Ballads project is Music and society in early modern England (Cambridge, 2010). This is an overview of music-making in the 16th and 17th centuries, and it includes chapters on musicians, dancing, bell-ringing, psalm-singing and, of course, ballads. Angela McShane is an Honorary Reader in History at the University of Warwick. She is a social and cultural historian, researching the political world of the broadside ballad and the political and material histories of intoxicants and the everyday. She has published widely on political balladry, including numerous book chapters, and journal articles in Past and Present, Renaissance Studies, Journal of British Studies, Journal of Early Modern History, Popular Music Journal and Media History. She is also the author of a reference work, Political Broadside Ballads in Seventeenth Century England: A Critical Bibliography (2011). A monograph on the broadside ballad trade and its politics in seventeenth-century Britain is forthcoming with Boydell and Brewer. She is also a Co-Investigator for a related website and book project: “Our Subversive Voice: The history and politics of protest music 1600-2020.” From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Published: May 2, 2024Seven months into Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, a student-led grassroots movement is spreading across the US and beyond, hearkening back to the student protests of the ‘60s that played a pivotal role in ending the US war in Vietnam. In what is being called the “student intifada,” with over 100 encampments going up at different college and university campuses, students, faculty, grad students, and other campus community members are exercising civil disobedience, occupying space on campuses, defying brutal repression from administrators and police, combatting skewed and wildly lopsided narratives in corporate media, and pressuring their universities to “disclose and divest” their investments in companies and financial institutions connected to Israel. In this TRNN livestream, which will take place on Thurs, May 2, at noon ET, we will be speaking directly with encampment organizers/participants from the University of Michigan, the Indiana University, and Stanford University, and we will be getting updates from encampments from New York to California.Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrmm_7RDZJeQzq2-wvmjueg/joinThe Real News is an independent, viewer-supported, radical media network. Published: May 9, 2024Across the country, Democrats are organizing campaigns to vote uncommitted in the primary elections. Yet the aims of this movement are to do more than simply register dissent against Biden's support for Israel's genocide in Gaza. The Uncommitted Campaign will pick up delegates in every state and congressional district where more than 15% of voters cast an uncommitted primary ballot—creating the possibility of leverage within the party at the upcoming DNC. Vote Uncommitted organizers from the state of Maryland join The Marc Steiner Show to discuss the campaign and its implications for the election.Studio / Post-Production: Cameron GranadinoJoin this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrmm_7RDZJeQzq2-wvmjueg/joinThe Real News is an independent, viewer-supported, radical media network. Why has the US so obstinately refused to free Peltier, despite decades of international outcry? The answer lies in the threat posed by what Peltier represents—the demands of the Indigenous liberation movement for sovereignty and justice after centuries of US settler colonialism. Note: Due to time constraints, my podcast AthCastMusic is late by 2 days. Usually it airs every Thursday. Parking Garage is a dynamic band, often performing as a trio or quartet, based in Athens, Georgia. They kept me laughing throughout ourconversation. The band members are:Dakota Snow - bass/voxNathan Whatley - guitar/voxZach Ross - drumsRafal - trumpetThree of the four members hail from mid-Georgia, with some having attended Georgia College & State University. They met through mutual connections during their high school years and have been musically connected ever since. The band solidified as a trio in Athens, and the recent addition of Rafal, (RAFFLE) a born and bred Athenian, on trumpet has given their sound a distinctive melodic rock vibe.Flagpole, Athens' music magazine, celebrated the band's arrival in the city with the release of their five-song EP, in 2022, If We Haven't Said It Already, produced by Well Kept's Tommy Trautwein. In the article, Lamb notes, "the lead singer has all the swagger of early Beastie Boys and the ambition of early Rush."I had an incredible time with these guys, laughing throughout our conversation. You'll enjoy learning about how they formed, their feelings about Athens, how they got their name and where their talent might take them in the future.Don't miss out on hearing one of their live performances of a song that's never been recorded. The desire for a second chance provides the engine for many of Shakespeare's plays. In their new book, Second Chances: Shakespeare and Freud, Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt and psychologist Adam Phillips argue that this fascination with the second chance links Shakespeare with one of his biggest 20th century fans: Sigmund Freud. Shakespeare helped Freud think about second chances—why we desire them so deeply, and why, sometimes, we push them away. Host Barbara Bogaev talks with Greenblatt and Phillips about how reading Freud alongside Shakespeare can help illuminate both writers' insights into human nature. Published: May 01, 2023 Today we will be talking about Evangelization with our special guest Tom Quinlan. As Catholics, we are called to spread the Good News of the Gospel and share the love of Christ with others. This is what evangelization is all about, and it's a crucial aspect of our faith. Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of evangelization, calling on all Catholics to be missionary disciples and to go out to the peripheries to share the joy of the Gospel. But what does evangelization mean, and how can we do it effectively in our modern world? In this episode, we'll explore these questions and more as we discuss the vital role of evangelization in the Catholic Church. In this episode, one resource that Tom discusses is Divine Renovation. Here is a link to their ministry. Tom Quinlan has served in parish, diocesan, and national catechetical leadership roles for nearly 30 years. He has served on Catholic boards: National Conference for Catechetical Leadership, Paulist Evangelization Ministries, and now, Alpha in a Catholic Context. He has spoken in dioceses and conferences throughout the country, including at Franciscan University and the LA Religious Education Congress. Tom is the author of three books, two on the Eucharist and one on catechetical leadership (Excellence in Ministry: Best Practices for Successful Catechetical Leadership). His style strives to bring spirituality, theological reflection, and pastoral application into synergy. He lives in the Des Moines (Iowa) area with his wife and two boys, where he directs the St. Joseph Evangelization Center and serves 24 parishes in the region. Tom welcomes hearing from Church leaders and can be contacted through LinkedIn or via email. Thomas Dailey, the inaugural John Cardinal Foley Chair of Homiletics & Social Communications at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia. Fr. Dailey has a new book, Behold This Heart: St. Francis de Sales and Devotion to the Sacred Heart, available on Amazon. In the book, Fr. Thomas Dailey transports the reader beyond the prayers and liturgies and helps you to contemplate the Sacred Heart, which Pope Benedict XVI said has irreplaceable importance. Jim and Fr. Dailey also discuss the role of the John Cardinal Foley Chair and the impact Fr. Dailey is making on Seminarians, parishes, and dioceses. Published: May 21, 2017 Interview with John Foster, Class of 2012 This week we continue our two-part episode of the 2011 merger that created Berks Catholic High School. We interview John Foster, a 2012 graduate and member of the first senior class. John was a Junior at Reading Central Catholic High School when he heard the news that his school would merge with Holy Name High School. John participated as part of the student council and the transition team to form Berks Catholic. As the President of the Inaugural Senior Class, John has an impressive perspective on the transition and his role. John's 16-year formation in Catholic education inspired him to stay active and become an advocate for Catholic schools. John and his classmates will celebrate their 5-year class reunion this summer. Six years ago, as a member of the transition team, John spoke out as an advocate for the new Berks Catholic High School and even then he was a student who stood out among the crowd. See YouTube Video Part One and Part Two of John's witness for Berks Catholic back in 2011. Read an article by WFMZ about Berks Catholic's exciting expansion project. Published: May 19, 2020 How are pastor's thinking about COVID-19 through the global pandemic? What are some of the best practices that are being developed in parishes to reach out to the faithful? Today, Changing Our World‘s Jim Friend talks with Fr. Don Zeiler, Pastor of St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Community in McKinney, Texas. Fr. Don talks about how his parish has adapted their services to meet the needs of their community throughout this crisis. St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Community In 1996 a new Catholic parish in McKinney was established, with word came that Fr. Greg Kelly (now Bishop Greg Kelly) had been assigned as pastor. Regular weekend Masses began on July 28, 1996, meeting in various MISD schools. In December 1996, the community received its official name, St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Community. Fr. Don Zeiler was welcomed as the second Pastor of St. Gabriel during the Masses on January 20, 2008.The fundraising campaign, “Raising the Walls,” kicked off in the fall of 2013, led by Changing Our World. With input from parishioners and the Executive Committee and guided by the vision of Fr. Don for the church to be a teaching and evangelizing tool, the drawings and plans for our Permanent Worship Space were designed. The parish officially broke ground for the new sanctuary on May 15, 2016.The new church home is now a reality! They dedicated the church and altar on February 23, 2019. The founding pastor, Bishop Greg Kelly, celebrated the Mass, and it was a truly special moment for the parish. Published: May 16, 2017 Today's story is about the successful formation of Berks Catholic High School in Reading, Pennsylvania (Diocese of Allentown), a co-ed high school formed in 2011 through the merger of Reading Central Catholic and Holy Name high schools. Both of the former high schools had proud traditions and tremendous legacies. But the new school exceeded all expectations and defied the odds. In this episode, Jim Friend interviews Tony Balistrere, Principal and his colleagues Nicole (Chiarelli) Smith, Admissions Director and Fr. Gene Ritz, the school's Chaplain, as we discuss why they now have an enrollment that exceeds the combined enrollment of the two previous schools combined. Tony and Jim begin by discussing the early days of the transition team, the formation of the school, how the school has remained successful through enrollment and development and the work of the board of directors. Tony's insights on how to connect alumni from the two previous schools with the current mission of Berks Catholic has proven very successful in raising over $5 million for their capital campaign less than five years since the merger. Berks Catholic High School centers on four pillars: God, Family, Academics, and Fun. As a vibrant Christ-centered community, the dedicated Administration, Faculty, and Staff provide a challenging academic environment for a diverse population of young men and women. Through Christian principles rooted in the Catholic tradition, they strive to positively impact students spiritually, intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally, so they can live productive lives of service in this world and attain eternal life. Next episode, we interview Mr. John Foster, Berks Catholic class of 2012. John served as a member of the Berks Catholic Transition Team during the merger, and he has some great insights as he and his former classmates get ready to celebrate their 5-year reunion. Robert O'Hara joins us to talk about directing last year's Shakespeare in the Park production of Richard III, starring Danai Gurira of Marvel's "Black Panther." He tells us about gathering a diverse cast of actors with disabilities, wanting to “trigger” his audiences, and what it's like to get a call about directing Shakespeare in the Park (spoiler: it's a whirlwind). Robert O'Hara is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. A film of Richard III premiered on PBS's Great Performances on Friday, May 19, and is streaming now on the PBS App and at pbs.org/gperf. Robert O'Hara is a two-time Obie Award and two-time NAACP Award Winner whose work has been seen around the country. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his direction of Jeremy O. 2023 marks the 400th anniversary of the publishing of the First Folio, the first collected edition of Shakespeare's plays. Eighteen of those plays, including Macbeth, Twelfth Night, and The Tempest, had never been published before they appeared in the First Folio, which means that without it, they might have been lost. But how did the First Folio come to be? It turns out that this book's story has enough twists to fill out a five-act play. It has its own heroes, villains, and political subtext. And the success of the Folio itself was far from a sure thing. Dr. Chris Laoutaris's new book, Shakespeare's Book: The Story Behind the First Folio and the Making of Shakespeare, re-examines everything we thought we knew about the publication of the First Folio, and uncovers some new information in the archives. He is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. Chris Laoutaris is a biographer, historian, poet, Shakespeare scholar, and Associate Professor at The Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England. He is the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Shakespeare Beyond Borders Alliance and the Co-Founder of the EQUALityShakespeare (EQUALS) initiative. He is also the author of Shakespeare and the Countess: The Battle that Gave Birth to the Globe. Shakespeare's Book: The Story Behind the First Folio and the Making of Shakespeare is out now from Pegasus Books. From our Shakespeare Unlimited podcast.
