The trajectories of Buddhism in modern India

"Nehru and Ambedkar represented two very different visions of the way Buddhism could be imagined. Buddhism is a full-fledged revolution for Ambedkar and Nehru's government was not comfortable with that sort of vision of Buddhism. [Similarly] there is a fracture between the Ambedkarite vision of Buddhism and SN Goenka's vision, in which you can be a Hindu or Christian and still practise Vipassana. It unfolds in a wider ecumenical, secularised idea of what a modern India could be like, and I think those two trajectories are really difficult to reconcile. In its totality, what I really wanted to do was paint a picture of all walks of Buddhist life -- the lives of labourers who were inspired to convert to Buddhism, of intellectuals, of both Sanatan Hindus, who had a certain vision of Buddhism, as well as liberal, more secular-minded Hindus, of progressives, Leftists and Right Wing figures... I wanted to understand the whole composite picture of what Buddhism looked like during this broader period of time."

Ilya Kravtsov, Founder of Ringkas, and Jeremy Au discuss three primary topics: 1. Ilya's Entrepreneurial Journey: Ilya elaborates on wrapping up his time at his last company, building a new startup, and how he approached the quest to find a compatible co-founder. He emphasizes the importance of aligned values, mutual respect, and complementary skills when looking for a co-founder. He also shares how he and his cofounder used an experimental approach in identifying the right business vertical to enter and engaged in a thorough process of testing and validating to understand the market gaps and opportunities better. 2. Indonesia's Property Landscape: Ilya delves deep into his latest venture, Ringkas, which emerges as a solution to the intricacies of the Indonesian property market by streamlining it, offering potential homeowners clarity and guidance. He talks about the challenges of the property market like the varying interest rates, the nuances between primary and resale markets, and the cumbersome mortgage loan process. He also emphasizes the importance of robust market data in understanding rental returns and the complexities homeowners face in the country's tangled mortgage process. 3. Southeast Asia's Diverse Cultural Fabric: Ilya and Jeremy talk about Southeast Asia's rich cultural diversity where every country, city, and community offers its own unique set of experiences. Ilya advises folks new to the region to immerse themselves in the local culture. He discusses how people should step out of their comfort zones and explore other cities besides the metropolises like Jakarta or Singapore since they do not encapsulate the entirety of what the region has to offer. He underscores that understanding local nuances, such as in business regulations or consumer behaviors, is vital for anyone aiming to succeed in the region.  They also talk about understanding varied GDP per capita across Southeast Asian nations, the evolving regulatory dynamics in the business realm, the intricacies of starting a business amidst a global pandemic, and the evolution of the startup ecosystem in the region and its comparisons with global counterparts.  Watch, listen or read the full insight at https://www.bravesea.com/blog/ilya-kravtsov2 Get transcripts, startup resources & community discussions at www.bravesea.com WhatsApp: https://chat.whatsapp.com/CeL3ywi7yOWFd8HTo6yzde Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4TnqkaWpTT181lMA8xNu0T YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JeremyAu Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/sg/podcast/brave-southeast-asia-tech-singapore-indonesia-vietnam/id1506890464 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZC5jby9icmF2ZWR5bmFtaWNz TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyau LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bravesea Learn more about Ringkas here: https://www.ringkas.co.id #Indonesia #PropertyMarket #Mortgages #Localization #CulturalDiversity #startups #founder #businesstransition #southeastasia

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More. This week's guest is Rachel Lucero. She is the host and creator of The Sago Show—a Filipino food show that seeks to examine the intricate intersectionality of culture, history, and education through creative & authentic Filipino food recipes. Rachel is a Filipino-American and, as a former Teach For America corps member, she shares a strong passion and commitment for education and social justice, especially for those who are marginalized and underserved. She currently works full-time as a business analyst and she continues to find ways to create more expansive and insightful content on her Youtube Channel—The Sago Show—by studying different slices of Filipino history and food culture. With her bachelor's in bioengineering and M.S. in education from John Hopkins University, Rachel found her unique calling on Youtube by combining her interest in cultural competency, technology, and pop culture—all through creating snack-size videos and reels on Instagram. The perfect cross-section between entertainment and education. In only a year, The Sago Show has grown to nearly 1,100 subscribers on Youtube and more than 70,000 views on social media, while maintaining strong & ongoing content engagement. You can find her latest featured interview article: “Filipino Food Has a New Spokesperson” in Eater Magazine. Rachel's increased exposure through her brand also allowed her to give numerous public speeches this past year at USC and to the Association of Filipino Scientists in America, which helped her realize the power of her voice. Through this realization, Rachel became more mindful and intentional with her brand and the ways she could also help elevate the voices of those who need elevated. We believe Rachel beautifully embodies the Discover More ethos of the curious mindset, and we are beyond excited to have this conversation with her. In his work KV explores themes of war migration and cultural assimilation through a re-examination of his parents' experience of the Vietnam war and his own experience of growing up in Canada in a minority immigrant family. War trauma and integration are correlated with the artist's coming out as a gay Asian man. I first came to know KV soon after he curated and produced a group online show, Transient for ArtCan, who we are both members of. Since then we have had many chats on Instagram, discussing each other's paintings and what we see in them. KV  has been amazing introducing me to so many new ideas, its hardly surprising he has his own Instagram IGTV series, Art and Ideas. In this show we talk loft spaces and performances, melting pots of cultural  influences between Asia and Europe. We discuss the importance of mindset in relation to tennis. KV talks of War, expression  and his experiences. Greg and Ed dive into a great question for expats in Thailand: to what extent are you actually integrated into mainstream Thai culture? Greg posted a quick survey on our Facebook page and uses some responses as a jumping-off point for discussion.  Ed begins by guessing he’s probably a 5 on a scale of 1-10. He never socializes with only Thai people, but has good enough Thai language that he can handle himself on his own in the city. He does note though that Thailand may be different than some Western countries, in that there may be a level of assimilation that Thai people don’t really want foreigners to achieve. Greg states he’s probably a 5 or 6. His Thai is getting better and he sometimes attends family events that are 100% Thai, but still...by this point he should be busting out soliloquies in the park!  Greg then reads a number of quotes from listeners about their relative absorption into Thai society with a variety of answers, but most long-timers seem to come at the 4-6 range.  Don’t forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks.
