If you're a small service-oriented business, you want to get people to talk about you!  But how do you do this?  Small companies—especially service-based solopreneurs—can't generate buzz the same way as big companies. They need to dip into their client's backstories. When someone says, “You seem to be talking to me!” -- that's how your buzz begins!  In this episode, I talk about what it means for a solopreneur to create buzz. It's not the same thing as big-company buzz. You'll get examples of stories that never became the subject of conversation, and how they're different from stories that generated buzz. You'll also learn:  Why my first website didn't get clients for relocation coaching How backstories hold the key to going viral 3 reasons why backstories help generate buzz  RESOURCES AND MENTIONS:  Christina Hills - Get her ebook “Web Design for Non-Techies”  If you click at a different time, you'll get a different resource.  Peter Guber -  Tell to Win - Buy on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3G0dHNg My book on relocation (free with Kindle Unlimited - available in paperback or ebook on Amazon)  Click here. 080: How Trump's new restrictions on foreign workers really benefit Canada!

Canadian Immigration Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 26, 2020 63:22

For US companies relying upon foreign workers, Monday, June 23, 2020, was a day of significant disappointment. President Trump announced that many categories of foreign workers would no longer be granted entry to the US until the end of 2020. Fortunately, Canada's immigration policy is far more welcoming. If you are a US company that is going to be hurt by these latest rounds of restrictions, Canada may just be the answer. Tune in to this episode where US Immigration Attorney, Nicole Ezer, explains what these restrictions mean for your company and Canadian Immigration Lawyer, Mark Holthe, shares some great "made-in-Canada" solutions to turn your disappointment into relief. Many US companies were left reeling on Monday, June 23rd when President Trump announced that H-1B, L, J and H-2B visas would be blocked until the end of 2020. These four non-immigrant visa categories are relied upon heavily by US companies seeking to fill critical skill shortages in the US. Now what is a US company going to do? They were already hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, but this most recent announcement feels like insult to injury. In this episode US immigration attorney, Nicole Ezer shares some great insight into what these restrictions really mean for US companies and why things may not be as bad as they seem. I then take some time to pull the curtain back on some very practical solutions that Canada's facilitative immigration policy offer to struggling US companies and their foreign workers. Nicole Ezer is the founder of Ezer Law Group, a business immigration boutique law firm based in Houston, Texas. She is my go-to attorney for any US bound business immigration need. We have collaborated for years on mutual cross-border clients and I have fortunate to call her my friend. She is a frequent speaker before industry, HR groups and for attorney CLE activities, and is a 2002 Graduate of the Center for Houston's Future Leadership Forum. Nicole has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center, teaching “Business Immigration Basics”. With over 700,000 international students in Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has been struggling with what to do with them all. Many of these students are wondering if they have a future in Canada over the long term. In this episode Canadian Immigration Lawyer Will Tao joins me talk about some of the challenges students experience when studying in Canada and some essential tips to avoiding the most common pitfalls. I was super happy to have Will Tao join me again after an almost four year absence on my Podcast. The last time he joined me, he was just cutting his teeth in the world of immigration law. However, he has worked hard to establish himself as a thought leader in our industry and someone who truly practices immigration law the right way. Will Tao (pronouns: he/him) is a Canadian Immigration and Refugee Lawyer at Edelmann and Co., who lives and works on the traditional, unceded territories of the Coast Salish – sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations. Will provides legal services in all areas of Canadian immigration and refugee law with a focus on complex applications, overcoming refusals, inadmissibility matters, appeals, and judicial reviews. Will regularly appeals before the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court of Canada. His focus is on international students, families, and temporary foreign workers. Will also provides strategic advice and consultation to government, media, educational institutions, and businesses on immigration/refugee, decolonization, and race equity related issues. He is the founder and creator of Vancouver Immigration Blog, where he hopes to make immigration and refugee law more accessible to the general public. He is a second-generation Canadian, product of immigrants, and finds his personal motivation in the sacrifices of his parents and the resilience of Indigenous ancestors to this land. In this episode Will and I discussed the plight of international students in Canada and pulled back the curtain on what is really happening in the background of immigration processing. Will took some time to share his thoughts on the challenges international students face in Canada and offered a few solutions to some of the most common pitfalls. Have you ever wondered why the Canadian Immigration process can be so darn hard and unforgiving? In this episode I share a few of my own thoughts on Canadian Immigration from the many years I have spent working in the trenches. This episode came about quite spontaneously. As I was walking through the Cottonwood trees in our community wilderness park along the banks of the Old Man River near Lethbridge, I started think about my immigration practice and how much it had changed since I first decided to focus exclusively on immigration law back in 2003. To say that things have changed is an understatement. When I started practicing, I had just finished working on the border as an officer and completed a year of pro bono work with the hearings officers in Calgary, Alberta. I had tons of great relationships established within the various immigration departments and was well positioned to start my practice as an immigration lawyer. However, over time the landscape shifted and with that so too went officer discretion. In this Episode, I shared some insight on why these changes have occurred and the impact it has had on my practice and how I serve my clients. I also shared a little bit about my new law firm Holthe Immigration Law, why I created it and how it is the perfect solution for how I want to practice for the rest of my career. I've got big plans for my little law firm. If you or someone you know is looking for an opportunity to work with a great group of lawyers looking to change the world please don't hesitate to reach out. On this episode, Jamie interviews celebrity wardrobe stylist Ashley Zohar, who also happens to be Jamie’s next-door neighbor. We discuss: What was a little too much this week (hint: I was a guest on Brandi Glanville’s podcast!), what was just the right amount of too much this week, how Jamie’s dad thinks she curses too much on this podcast, Ashley’s nerves about being interviewed on her first podcast, Ashley talks about all the amazing male celebs she styles (Josh Radner from “How I Met Your Mother,” Trevante Rhodes, Ed Helms and Jamie’s personal dream boat, Kyle Chandler from “Friday Night Lights”).   Ashley goes into what it’s like to actually work with Kyle (aka Coach Taylor) only because Jamie forced her to. Don’t try to put this man in a skinny jean, ok?! Jamie then tells the story about how her friend from college showed her blog to J. Lo and what J. Lo said about it. Ashley then talks about how she got started as a celebrity stylist and how she literally hates posting on Instagram. Then we go into Ashley’s love for interior design and how she’s super fulfilled designing furniture. After that Jamie tells the story about how she yells at Ashley for not having an emergency supply kit and the insane amount of research Jamie has done into LA earthquakes. Then Jamie forces Ashley to play a game of rapid fire word association and hilarity ensues. Ashley talks about her OCD and how it affects her beauty routine, then Ashley talks about how Jamie accidentally donated Ashley’s stuff to the Vietnam Veteran’s Association, LOL. And then Jamie talks about which cat she would save in a fire (STOP I know), and why she was always the “favorite child,” mostly because she was just less drama than her little sister. Things we mentioned: My amazing smart bed My DIY disaster kit blog post The super chic white fire extinguisher Vietnam Veteran’s Association The body wash Ashley is currently obsessed with “You’re my half sister but I whole love you.” Please RATE, REVIEW and SUBSCRIBE! Meet our feature guest Jim Sheils has become known as the “Crazy Glue” for families. His popular “Board Meeting” strategy and other simple frameworks are helping thousands of business leaders and professionals worldwide reconnect where it counts the most: at home. His company 18 Summers, specializes in workshops and private consulting for individuals and organizations looking to strengthen their family lives while still succeeding in business. Jim’s ability to build immediate trust and create consistent results for his clients (and their children) has given him the opportunity to work with top organizations around the world. Through working with families over the years, Jim has also become a leader in the movement to improve the education system for our children (a growing concern in many circles). Sharing his own family’s journey into alternative education, and the creation of his “Education Matrix,” Jim shows parents how to get involved in their children’s education without feeling overwhelmed and offers them a roadmap to ensure their kids are receiving the most important lessons rarely taught in school. In addition to Family Board Meetings, Jim owns a private real estate investment company that has done more than $200 million in transactions. He is also the author of the #1 parenting book “The Family Board Meeting.” Jim is an avid surfer and enjoys traveling with family and friends, especially his beautiful wife Jamie and their four children, Alden, Leland, Maggie and Sammy. Today’s Quick Tip is about Moen’s new shower seat that’s made from teak wood. It’s pretty sweet and comes in two different finishes, oil rubbed bronze or stainless steel. This seat is great for older homeowners or anyone who wants more stability in the bathroom.    You can check it out over on Moen’s site    http://www.moen.com   Visit the Bathroom section then look for Safety and that’s where you’ll find the teak seat.     Builder’s grade mirrors are plain and sometimes flat out ugly. My DIY friend Kim Six redesigned her mirror using standard lumber from Home Depot. The cool part is she didn’t have to make any miters and had all the pieces cut to size at the store.    She shows you exactly how to do this over on her website    http://www.thekimsixfix.com/2012/05/framing-mirror-without-miter-cuts.html   This is a project anyone can do and with Kim’s detailed instructions I know you could knock this out in a weekend.   Thanks Kim for sharing your talent.       If you liked today’s show subscribe to it via iTunes    https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/home-repair-tutor/id965752980   or Stitcher    http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/home-repair-tutor?refid=stpr   Our show is 5 days a week Monday thru Friday.   Each show is 8-10 minutes and will make you a better DIYer, or your money back (which is just my way of saying you’ll like the show since it’s FREE).       Does your bathroom make you feel embarrassed, disgusted, or frustrated?   Check out Bathroom Repair Tutor   http://bathroomrepairtutor.com/     Our memberships are limited to 100 people on a monthly basis.
