On this week's episode we will be speaking to our next lovely guest and lived experience speaker, Sophie Munn. Sophie grew up in a small town in South Australia Adelaide called Naracoorte, with a community of around 7,000 people. Growing up in this small tight nit community Sophie had nothing but appreciation for her upbringing. However, like many children, Sophie was exposed to diet culture, the scales and body comparisons. Finding herself beginning to focus on her weight from the young age of 10. From there, small habits with food and a fixation on numbers began to snowball into her teen years. Where Sophie then attended an all-girls boarding school where she became even more conscious about her body. Surrounded by thousands of other girls also focused on appearance and photos Sophie found herself falling deeper into the traps of disordered eating. However, it was after school at university where Sophie placed a lot of pressure on herself to be a perfectionist and high achiever. This was where Sophie really began to neglect her nutrition and overexercise. In the end feeling really rundown where she presented to the GP for shin splints. It was here that the GP referred Sophie onto a psychologist for eating disorders with concerns for Sophie Health.   On this week's episode Sophie shares her heartfelt story going in and out of hospitals and day programs for 4-5 years. Feeling as if her life was stuck in time while the rest of the world was really living. Like many Sophie didn't know how to get out of the cycle she was trapped in. However, after a lot of dedication and knowing when she needed to reach out for ongoing support, Sophie managed to free herself from the grips of an eating disorder. Now, Sophie has moved her life to Queensland with her fiancé and now is pregnant with her first child! Today Sophie is now dealing with new changes to her body through pregnancy and looking at the near future of being a new mum. Naracoorte Caves in South Australia are home to a remarkable fossil heritage of Pleistocene life. The story of Naracoorte, though, is not just the story of it's fossil heritage. It's the stories of the community and the connection of lots people to the caves and that heritage. In this first episode for Season 2 of Palaeo Jam, we speak to several community members to hear their stories of the Naracoorte Caves. In so doing, we seek to explore what a site such a site with such a close proximity to a town, might mean to the local community.   Note: Our first attempt at uploading this episode saw only part of it uploaded! This is the full episode.   In this episode, host Michael Mills chats with former Mayor , Erika Vickory, former Caves Manager Steve Bourne, long time Caves site interpreter Barb Lobban, and a member of the audience, Pat Gericke, who was able to bring to our attention an amazing story about one of her ancestors, who was a key staff member of the Naracoorte Caves in its earliest days.   Thanks to National Science Week, Heaps Good Productions, the Naracoorte Caves, the Naracoorte Lucindale Council, and most importantly, the people of Naracoorte, for making this episode possible.   And in case you missed it, during Season 1 of Palaeo Jam, we recorded an episode with Prof Rod Wells while sitting in the very spot in Victoria Cave where he'd sat more than 50 years beforehand in discovering the fossil bed. We also chatted with Dr Liz Reed about her research in the Caves as a local, and in so doing, were reminded that while caves can be wonderful places for discovering fossils, they continue to be living ecosystems.   Check out this and the rest of of the Palaeo Jam episodes through your preferred platform, and subscribe.

The second, Isabella Donato, was at the end of Honours, in a project that explores the identification of skull bones in monitor lizards so that we know what species have lived here in the past. The third, Caitlin Mudge, was getting ready for PhD submission, through the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA on how species genetics relates to geographic location. The results of this research will help us understand the faunal landscape and historic diversity of several Australian mammal groups during the Holocene.   The wide ranging conversation touches on a number of topics relevant to palaeo students, along with each of their areas of study. Perry Mitris is undoubtedly the household name local Limestone Coast football observers are looking forward to watching their team, Naracoorte United, come up against in Saturday afternoon's Australia Cup qualifying round. Mitris is a highly accomplished Adelaide-based player, who most recently made local headlines for following in his father's footsteps in representing the historic South Australian club with Cypriot roots, Adelaide Cobras FC after a storied career. Mitris was a standout player for West Adelaide FC in 2015, helping the former NSL giant capture the National Premier Leagues SA title with his goal scoring prowess. In 2014, he was a key cog in the Metrostars machine which went on to win the Australian National Premier Leagues football competition, while in 2010, Mitris was one of Adelaide United's standout young talents and was offered a place in the club's 2009/10 Asian Champions League roster. Mitris is one of the numerous Cobras stars who will grace the football pitch at the Naracoorte and District Sports Centre, affording Naracoorte's humble squad members the opportunity to test themselves against some of the state's top talents. Despite many viewing the clash as a 'David vs. Goliath' type affair, Mitris told the Flow Friday Sports Show that his teammates were equally as excited as their counterparts to match it with one of regional South Australia's unknown quantities. One of the other reasons as to why Mitris and the Adelaide Cobras squad are so eager to touch down on the Limestone Coast has to do with the rare prospect of the side being able to travel together with the Cobras' travel itinerary including a one-night stay in Naracoorte. Cobras fans will be treated to an intriguing competitive hit-out with their season set to officially kick-off at home to the Adelaide Blue Eagles next weekend.

The Cobras boast a wide array of talent on their books, such as the likes of one of the state's most recognisable talents at local level, Perry Mitris. The match has been labelled as the Limestone Coast's biggest ever football occasion and Munro admitted that it is the biggest stage the club has ever competed on, despite existing since the late sixties. At a time when it seems the digital age is taking over the media landscape and newspapers are dying, Michael Waite has bucked the trend by starting a new community newspaper in Naracoorte. Michael has a fascinating background and life journey which has come full circle - from growing up in Naracoorte, to spending half his life in the US, to now returning where it all began. After growing up in the small South Australian country towns of Naracoorte and Kybybolite, Lachie Neale has gone on to become one of the top footballers in the AFL. He made his mark with Fremantle, and now the Brisbane Lions, where in 2019 he led his new club to the finals and finished equal third in the Brownlow Medal. It has taken talent, drive, commitment and strong values for Lachie to rise to the heights he has reached, but as you'll find out in this podcast, a lot more goes on 'in the head' of an elite athlete.
