On this week's episode, Nathan, Chris, and Gita are joined by New Blood Interactive founder and Fallout expert Dave Oshry to talk about Amazon's new Fallout TV series, which just premiered. The general consensus: It's good! But it's also very Bethesda-era Fallout, heavily reliant on iconography and references (Stimpacks! Nuka Cola! The Junk Jet from Fallout 4!) in a way that can be distracting, bordering on nonsensical. Dave makes the great point, however, that Fallout embarked on this path even before Bethesda took the reins with Fallout 3, so perhaps things were always destined to end up here. We also discuss the evolution of Bethesda and the lessons the company will learn from Starfield (probably the wrong ones), and then later we – minus Dave – talk about how we all wound up in New York, The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, Baybee. Oh, and we recommend some movies. Credits - Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, Gita Jackson, & special guest Dave Oshry - Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude - Subscribe to Aftermath! About The Show Aftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Each week, games journalism veterans Luke Plunkett, Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, Riley MacLeod, and Gita Jackson – though not always all at once, because that's too many people for a podcast – break down video game news, Remember Some Games, and learn about Chris' frankly incredible number of special interests. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don't know what else to tell you; it's a great time. New Zealand and Sweden come together as I welcome Dave Oshry to the podcast. He is one of the hardest working people in the gaming industry today and we talked about his first contact with the FPS genre, his work on the Rise of the Triad reboot, learning to work as a video game producer and what really makes a "boomer shooter" special.
With the recent blow up in retro FPS titles in the indie scene in recent years, you'd find it hard to find anyone with a passing interest in the genre who wouldn't have heard of the "boomer shooter" title DUSK by David Szymanski and New Blood Interactive. In this episode of Indie Insight Odhrán sits down with David to talk all about his titles before and after DUSK and what it was like experiencing the immense success of the title back in 2018. Late, but not too late, the Daydreamcast is here to light up your night. We get into the controversial announcements for the 35th anniversary of everyone's favourite Italian entrepreneur in a segment we like to call 'Nintendo: Who Knows?' before we break down the catalogue of New Blood Interactive's throwback FPS games in a segment affectionately dubbed "Doom and Quake-Likes: Brogan Knows!". Once again, we leave the verdict on the hotness of our takes in the hands of our listeners as we try to bring the heat to Smash Bros. and water levels in platformers. Our game of the week is the GBA remake of the 1993 NES platformer, Kirby's Adventure , which we discuss with unprecedented depth. That's right, we talk about frame lag, sprite size, and even critique the menus! We also talk about normal things for all the listeners not called Sakurai. Indie Game Movement - The podcast about the business and marketing of indie games.
If there is at least one thing that any indie dev wants, it's probably to grow fast. However, growing fast still comes with many risks and challenges. Knowing what to do (and not to do) can save time, money and frustration, but sometimes you just got to plow through the obstacles ahead to learn what you need to get the game completed. This is nothing new for Dave Oshry of New Blood Interactive, as he shares the risks he took and the experiences he learned from to get his games to market in a reasonable time frame.

Originally recorded on May 2, 2018The DAC podcast crew is joined by a very special guest, Scott Gurney (aka 500_pts), multiplayer developer for New Blood Interactive, to talk about his work on the very-excellent DUSK, slumming it with 50 cent trash games on Steam, and the triumphant return of the old-school first person shooter. The boys chat a bit about what they've been playing lately, their personal histories with the FPS genre, and their deepest, darkest John Carmack fantasies. No, for real -- Chris makes Scott play a steamy FPS-themed dating game at the end of this episode, and things get a little... messy.
