Brave Dynamics: Authentic Leadership Reflections
Startup Unicorn GDP Per Capita Time Machine & VC as Olympic Coaches - E531

Jeremy Au referenced Asia Partners' report predicting a surge in Southeast Asian unicorns based on macroeconomic fundamentals, and discussed the GDP per capita “time machine” phenomenon where Chinese and American founders enter Southeast Asia to replicate proven business models in frontier markets. He also shared an LP's perspective on Southeast Asia's underperforming VC funds, questioning whether it was due to fund selection or broader market dynamics, e.g. Vietnam's struggle to produce a successful tech IPO and high U.S. interest rates that have constrained regional Series B/C capital. He compared VCs to Olympic coaches, explaining that top investors prioritize 10x teams, product, and defensible economics—but competition is fierce for the best startup teams, e.g. Rewind AI receiving 170 term sheets via a Google form auction as an extreme case of a bidding war where VCs fight to get into the round. === Jeremy Au (区汉辉) hosts BRAVE Southeast Asia Tech, the region's #1 tech podcast and global top 10% podcast with 50,000+ monthly listeners. He cofounded Orvel Ventures (network-driven VC fund), leads the Harvard Business School Alumni Angels for Southeast Asia and is an angel investor in 24 startups. In this episode, Kyrah Altman, co-founder & CEO of LEAD Inc., the industry leader in mental health and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice & Belonging (DEI-JB) education, joins The Okay Days to talk about mental health education. Kyrah's story of social entrepreneurship began at a young age. Let's Empower, Advocate, and Do (LEAD) was founded in 2012 when Kyrah was in high school. The organization's creation was directly catalyzed by the Newtown tragedy, as many of the school shooting's victims were similar ages to Kyrah's younger siblings. Since Kyrah began raising her younger siblings as a pre-teen herself, this horrific tragedy catapulted her and her peers into action. In 2016, Kyrah won $32,500 of seed funding in The George Washington University's New Venture Competition, and incorporated LEAD as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Through a variety of training, consulting, and coaching services, LEAD empowers individuals with no-fluff and practical education to move beyond awareness. And since LEAD's founding, Kyrah was named one of 25 Under 25 leading social entrepreneurs, and one of 10 Outstanding Young Leaders by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, among other outstanding recognitions. We talk about LEAD's 10 years of programming, the differences between mental illness and mental health, and how we can't have mental health education without DEI-JB education to turn awareness into action. Welcome to Episode 72 of The VentureFizz Podcast, the flagship podcast from the leading authority for jobs & careers in the tech industry. For this episode of our podcast, I interviewed Tom Eisenmann, Professor at Harvard Business School. What do the companies Rent the Runway, Birchbox, ThredUp, Cloudflare, Evertrue, and InsightSquared all have in common? Well, they are all companies that you may have heard of… but did you know that they all participated in Harvard Business School's New Venture Competition? It's true and this is a small sampling of the amazing companies from this competition. Sure, careers in management consulting and investment banking are still commonly considered by b-school grads, but its the path of entrepreneurship that has been one of the fastest growing areas of interest for students. Thus, I was excited to interview Tom and get an inside look at entrepreneurship at HBS. Tom has over 20 years of experience as a faculty member and he is also the faculty Co-Chair of the HBS Rock Center for Entrepreneurship, which supports these students who are looking to transform their ideas into successful startups and even perhaps… change the world. In this episode of our podcast, we also cover lots of great topics like: -ABC's Shark Tank and how so many HBS affiliated companies have appeared on the show. -Tom's background and what led him down the path of academia. -How HBS has evolved over time as it relates to entrepreneurship and its curriculum, including their case method approach. -The common mistakes where entrepreneurs get tripped up. -Tom's thoughts on whether or not entrepreneurship is a trait someone is born with or is it something that can be taught. -Advice on how to get into Harvard Business School. -Plus, a lot more. Lastly, if you like the show, please remember to subscribe to and review us on iTunes, or your podcast player of choice!

The Janik Brothers, both students at CLU, won the 2017 New Venture Competition held at HUB101. Five teams competed in a Pitch Competition. The NVC is a different type of entrepreneurial event. In this one, you're judged on your ability to pitch an idea. These brothers brought an unusual secret weapon to the event. They're magicians. They used magic in very clever ways to illustrate key points about their proposed business. It captured the imagination of the judges, and they walked away with first prize. Mark and Patrick (also a magician) had a great conversation with these two. They are a bit cagey about the actual business as it's still in the formative stage. We cover these topics: • What strategy they crafted for their presentation • What's WEAVE (that's the name of the business idea) • How their idea is unique • How you plan for a ten-minute pitch and a 10-minute QA • Another skill in their arsenal, having been on Speech and Debate teams in high school • How they're planning on using the $3K prize money
