Fiction Writing Made Easy
#251. Student Spotlight: 5 Lessons Learned from Notes to Novel (Season 8)

Fiction Writing Made Easy

What does it look like to go from feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about your novel…to finally making real progress? In this episode, I'm sharing five clips from past Notes to Novel students who all came into the program stuck in different ways—overwhelmed by story structure, trapped in research rabbit holes, or sitting on drafts that existed on paper, but still weren't clicking. And underneath it all was the same frustrating feeling: each writer knew they had a story worth telling; they just couldn't figure out how to get it out of their head and onto the page in a way they felt good about. You'll hear what shifted for these writers once they stopped piecing things together on their own and started working from a clear, proven framework they could trust. If you've been second-guessing yourself, rewriting the same chapters, or quietly wondering whether you're capable of finishing your novel, there's a good chance you'll recognize yourself somewhere in this episode. Here's what we cover:[03:09] How Sheila (a longtime pantser) went from avoiding structure completely to discovering that outlining actually made drafting feel more creative, not less.[07:17] How Liz (a perfectionist) realized endless research was keeping her stuck, and the simple "put a pin in it" mindset shift that kept her draft moving forward.[12:28] Why Hanna's draft started flowing faster once she gave herself permission to write messy scenes instead of trying to get every scene right the first time.[19:15] What Nikki learned from rebuilding her antagonist three times before her protagonist, conflict, and story finally started working together. [24:24] What changed when Brady reconnected with the deeper reason he wanted to write a novel—and how it silenced his inner imposter for good.Ready to finish your novel without second-guessing every word, sentence, or scene? Join Sheila, Liz, Hanna, Nikki, Brady, and hundreds of other writers inside Notes to Novel who've discovered that drafting doesn't have to feel hard. You just need the right roadmap.Get on the waitlist for the next round of Notes to Novel and get my complete, step-by-step framework to turn your ideas into a finished, easy-to-edit first draft you love. Working nights. Working weekends. Working into the cracks of your life. Tracking every minute for 30+ clients. Watching your effective rate drop every time you get faster at your job.If that is your current reality, this episode is the mirror you need. This week on Serve Scale Soar, I sit down with Mandy, a Canadian funnel designer and Strategist Society member, who pulled off one of my favorite kinds of transformations. She went from $10K hourly months (and full-on burnout) to one $12,000/month retainer client, a $19K best month, and a $130K year in 2025, all while working around 30 hours a week. Same brain. New container. We get into the exact moment it finally clicked for her at Strategist Summit Live, the boring (and consistent) Marketing Minutes strategy that landed her dream client out of a free Facebook Group, and the unexpected champagne client problem nobody warns you about when you finally get your time back.In this episode, you'll learn:Why hourly pricing is a pay cut every time you get better at your craft (and the math behind it)The Strategist Summit moment when one sentence from another member finally cracked Mandy openThe exact Marketing Minutes strategy Mandy ran during our 30-day challenge (hint: Facebook Groups are NOT dead)How she pitched and landed a $12K/month retainer from a free Facebook Group postThe "champagne client problem" of suddenly having time and not knowing what to do with itWhy you should build your retainer floor BEFORE the scalable offerWhy Strategist Society works for funnel builders and consultants, not just ad managersWhat actually moved the needle inside the program (and what Mandy did NOT consume)Mentioned in this episode:Apply for Strategist Society: thestrategistsociety.comDM the keyword MANDY to @brandimowles on Instagram for the lightning recapFor early-stage ad managers: conversionsforclients.comReady to scale past $10K months?Strategist Society is the room where high-level service providers (ad managers, funnel builders, consultants, OBMs, copywriters) scale to $20K, $30K, and $50K months while working under 25 hours a week. If you are ready to drop hourly pricing for good and want a coach in your corner who will quote the bigger number until your nervous system catches up, head to thestrategistsociety.com and apply. We will hop on a call, do a full business audit, and figure out if we are a fit.Loved this episode?Screenshot it, tag @brandimowles on Instagram, and share it with one service provider friend who is still stuck on hourly. That is how more women find their way out of the hourly trap. Now go do the dang thing.Follow the Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/serve-scale-soar/id1477998650Follow Brandi on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brandimowlesFollow Brandi on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Brandiandcompany

What happens when you stop trading endless hours for mediocre results and switch to a service that actually gives you your time back?In this student spotlight episode, I'm chatting with Natasha, a mom of two from Los Angeles who spent seven years in the online space doing branding, web design, and, most recently, Pinterest management. She was working hours upon hours for clients paying $775 to $997 a month and couldn't even see clear results from her efforts. Then she joined Conversions for Clients, landed two ad clients within two weeks at $1,000 each, and made her entire investment back before the 45-day mark. The best part? She went from not being able to track her time because she was always working to spending maybe 10 hours a month on her ad clients. Same money, fraction of the time.In this episode, we cover:Why Natasha was so frustrated with Pinterest management (and why organic services can burn you out)How she landed her first two ad clients from her existing client baseThe pricing and contract structure she used to transition clients smoothlyWhat it actually feels like to go from constant work to 10 hours a monthHer 90-day goals for phasing out Pinterest and going all in on adsWhy ads might be the perfect fit if you have both a creative and analytical brainThe unlimited opportunities available when you learn ad managementIf you're a service provider spending way too many hours on organic content and not seeing the results you want for your clients, this episode is your sign that there's a better way.Links Mentioned:Register for an upcoming workshop: brandimowles.com/100KLearn more about Conversions for Clients: conversionsforclients.comDM me on Instagram: instagram.com/brandimowlesFollow the Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/serve-scale-soar/id1477998650Follow Brandi on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brandimowlesFollow Brandi on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Brandiandcompany

What she found was that the existing modalities weren't quite doing it. So she built her own.In this conversation, Jessica shares the full story behind Flex&Flow®, the movement method she developed, tested, and eventually trademarked, and how she has built an online business around it. We talk about what it actually takes to create something genuinely new in a saturated market, the studio conflict that forced her hand on the trademark, how she grew her audience slowly and consistently through local ads and a weekly Instagram series, and how her online programs have evolved into a hybrid model that works for both her and her students. If you are a yoga teacher or fitness instructor sitting on an idea that feels too different, too niche, or not ready yet, Jessica's story is worth hearing.Connect with Jessica:https://www.jessicaklimachyoga.com/https://www.instagram.com/jessicaklimachyoga/

She wrote her first novel in 15-minute increments—in drive-through lines, at the dance studio, at swim lessons—while raising two kids and walking through one of the hardest seasons of her family's life. And she finished her book. That's Jackie Heninger's (pen name J.J. Henley) story, and I wanted to bring her onto the podcast because I know so many of you feel like life keeps getting in the way of writing your novel. Jackie's story is proof that it doesn't have to.Jackie is a mom of two, a former teacher, and a long-time Bookstagrammer who spent years reviewing other people's stories before she finally decided to write one of her own. She went through my Notes to Novel program and finished her debut romantic suspense, writing most of it in small pockets of time between school drop-offs, swim lessons, and drive-through lines. In this episode, she walks us through the whole journey, and I know you're going to find it incredibly inspiring. Here's what we talk about:[05:58] How beta reading a friend's novel made Jackie realize she could actually write her own and why seeing a story in its messy state changed her mindset entirely. [15:14] Why Jackie resisted calling her book a thriller with a romance subplot and the ‘aha' moment that completely changed her mind on this. [23:07] How having a scene-by-scene outline made her 15-minute writing sessions low-stress, productive, and effective. [28:13] What happened when her son stopped sleeping, her writing windows disappeared, and her family was navigating one of the hardest seasons of their lives (and how she kept going anyway).[38:30] Her honest take on self-publishing vs. traditional publishing, and what shifted her perspective entirely. If you've been waiting for the right time to write your book, or if life keeps getting in the way and you're not sure you have enough time to actually finish, this one's for you.

"Synthesis, function, and genetic variation of sorgoleone, the major biological nitrification inhibitor in sorghum" with Drs. Sakiko Okumoto, Bill Rooney, and Guntur Subbarao When we fertilize our crops, some of the nitrogen from that fertilizer gets converted into different forms through processes called nitrification and denitrification. When non-plant available forms of nitrogen exit the soil through water or as gas, it's a serious environmental problem. Thankfully, plants have some pretty nifty ways to prevent nitrification, such as biological nitrification inhibition or BNI, a process that manages the bacteria that cause nitrification. In this episode, Sakiko, Bill, and Guntur join me to discuss sorgoleone, a product of sorghum roots that plays a key role in the BNI process. Today's episode is a behind-the-scenes look at how one busy health and wellness coach completely changed her YouTube experience — and her business — with a simple, repeatable system. I'm sitting down with Nikki Cheak, a mom of three who used to feel overwhelmed every time she tried to make a video. She didn't have extra time, she didn't have fancy equipment, and honestly? She didn't have a plan. That all changed when she joined Story Driven YouTube. In this conversation, Nikki breaks down the extremely simple YouTube process she now uses to consistently post videos from home — using nothing more than her computer — while running her business and raising her kids. We talk about: • How she built a YouTube system that actually fits her life • The mindset shift that finally made YouTube "click" • How storytelling helped her connect instantly with the right people • Why she's more confident than ever showing up on camera • The business growth she's already seeing from this clarity and consistency If you've been overthinking YouTube, struggling with confidence, or feeling like you don't have time… Nikki's story will show you what's possible with a simple system and a little support.   ✨ LAST DAY! Today is the final day to save $300 on Story Driven YouTube. If you want the same structure, coaching, and clarity Nikki used to transform her channel — use the link below to join before the Black Friday Special ends.

Real writers share how they broke free from endless rewrites and abandoned drafts to finally finish their novels in just 90 days—using the exact framework that can unlock your story too.In this episode, I'm sharing real, inspiring stories from fiction writers who went from stuck and overwhelmed to finishing their novels using the exact framework I teach in Notes to Novel. You'll hear from fantasy writers, contemporary fiction authors, and more—writers who were trapped in endless rewrites, drowning in revision loops, or paralyzed by perfectionism. They all discovered that finishing a novel isn't about working harder—it's about having the right process. Here's what you'll learn from their breakthroughs:[02:25] How Jennifer broke free from a 3-year struggle with the same manuscript by treating her outline as a flexible “map” instead of a rigid plan.[06:30] Why Nefer finally escaped a 5-year line editing loop by focusing on story structure before prose—and how this one shift transformed her writing process.[10:25] How Tiara went from writing 2,000-word short stories to completing an 80,000-word novel without feeling overwhelmed—by breaking it into manageable scenes.[14:00] The moment Jen realized she didn't need an MFA to write fiction—just a clear strategy—and finished her first draft in 90 days after spending 2 years stuck on 10 pages.[16:55] How Sheila used genre frameworks to outline a 4-book series AND a standalone novel after spinning her wheels despite reading every craft book out there.Whether you're stuck rewriting Chapter 1, have abandoned manuscripts piling up, or feel paralyzed by novel structure, these writers prove that finishing your book is possible—even with a busy life and no formal creative writing training.Ready to make your own breakthrough? Enrollment for Notes to Novel closes on August 28th, and we won't open again until next year. Head to savannahgilbo.com/notes-to-novel to learn more and join the program that's helped over 800 writers make real progress on their books.
