Her Success Story
The Path to Success: Susan Ann Davis on Risk, Resilience, and Mentorship

Her Success Story

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2025 28:08

This week Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Susan Ann Davis. The two talk about resilience in the face of challenges, the importance of mentorship and community among women in business, and the strategic choices involved in scaling a company globally. In this episode, we discuss: How Susan's career path veered from law school ambitions to falling in love with Washington D.C.'s vibrant environment, leading her to strategic communications instead. Why mentorship is vital, rooted in Susan's experiences and efforts to create supportive networks like the International Women's Forum. Being unafraid to take risks and the power of listening more than talking to drive success. Handling difficult situations and failures. Overcoming challenges as a female business owner     Susan Ann Davis-President of SDI is a pioneering woman business owner who opened her agency when relatively few women were experiencing success in the business world, and fewer still owned their own business. Over decades, she has grown SDI into a global public affairs and strategic communications powerhouse, receiving accolades and recognition from industry peers and earning the respect of business and government leaders around the world. Internationally known for her expertise in strategic positioning, reputation management, government relations, and crisis communications, Davis has provided counsel to government and industry leaders on six continents and was a strategic U.S. advisor to the Irish Bishops Conference for the Vatican World Meeting of Families and the papal visit to Ireland. She is a co-founder of IPREX, a global agency network covering 100 markets worldwide. Davis has worked with more than a dozen countries on issues ranging from economic crisis to nation building and trade expansion. And for decades she has been a strategic communications and public affairs consultant on U.S. military and veterans' issues for the defense industry and to multiple Secretaries of Defense, DOD agencies, service branches and support organizations. Over her professional career, Davis has played a key strategic communications and government relations role in high-profile crises ranging from reputation management, product liability litigation to airline crashes, environmental threats, and foreign government economic crises, affording her deep insight into senior management policy, planning, execution, and decision making. And as a leader and business visionary, she is expert at developing engagement, media, and business opportunities for executives throughout the globe. She led the Global Irish Forum recommendation for Ireland to develop as a global hub for smart aging technologies, products, design and services, was a founder of Smart Ageing Living Labs of Ireland, and a former producer of a White House Conference on Aging and Silicon Valley Venture Boomer Summits. A lifelong advocate for social entrepreneurship, democracy building and leadership development for women, she is board chair emeritus of Vital Voices Global Partnership, the preeminent NGO that trains and empowers emerging women leaders in 115 countries. She was a founder and the first international president of the International Women's Forum, the global leadership organization now representing more than 7000 women of achievement. She serves on numerous philanthropy boards including the American Ireland Fund and the Razia's Ray of Hope Foundation, for which she is board chair. The Foundation continues to educate over 700 girls in rural Afghanistan. Davis chaired the landmark U.S. Ireland Business Summit, creating the groundbreaking US-Ireland R&D Partnership, and has been formally recognized for her leadership by the governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland. She's been named among the Top 100 Irish Americans, 75 Most Influential Irish American Women, and Top 100 Outstanding International Irish Business Leaders, and received the Flax Trust Award for Service to Northern Ireland. Along with then Prince Charles and former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, Davis received the Global Empowerment Humanitarian Award in the United Kingdom, and she was awarded the Noble Humanitarian Prize in Glasgow, Scotland and the prestigious Order of Merit by the Knights Templar. Among her many professional awards are the Stevie Award for Lifetime Achievement in Business, the Bronze Stevie for Woman of the Year, National Woman Business Owner of the Year, Woman Business Advocate of the United States, and the National Association of Women Business Owners Award for “Outstanding Achievement in National and International Public Affairs.” She was an inaugural honoree for the National Capital Public Relations Society Hall of Fame award and the Biz Bash Special Events Hall of Fame. Washingtonian Magazine called Davis one of “Washington's Most Powerful Women” and the Washington Business Journal has recognized her as one of the Washington D.C. region's most influential businesswomen. A University of Wisconsin–Madison graduate, she has been recognized with the Distinguished Service Award in the Field of Communications and the Distinguished Alumni Award. Web: https://richualist.com Follow: @dawndoesthemost @getritualist About Dawn Myers: Dawn lives to inspire entrepreneurs to walk in their purpose and build out their visions. Dawn leverages her product development, fundraising, and brand building experience to help early-stage founders achieve liftoff. Named one of Washington, D.C.'s Tech Titans by the Washingtonian and one of Washington's top 21 founders to watch by The Washington Business Journal, Dawn has negotiated partnerships with and secured funding from the world's top manufacturers including Dow, Proctor and Gamble, Sephora, and Glossier for her patented technologies in the hair and personal care space. Dawn is a startup eco-system architect, having launched and managed educational programming for entrepreneurs throughout the Washington metropolitan area. As former Director to Black Girl Ventures and Director at The Vinetta Project, a national 501(c)(3), Dawn has developed seminars, bootcamps, and accelerator programming for up and coming founders of color. Having been featured in Washington Business Journal, Essence, Black Enterprise, In Style, Teen Vogue, and Refinery 29, Dawn teaches founders how to lay a sound foundation, build the relationships they need to thrive, and access capital using non-traditional strategies From the Founder: Back in the day, it was completely socially unacceptable for little Black girls to wear their natural hair in public. Years later as a young law student, I would finally cut off my processed, relaxed, damaged straightened hair and embrace my natural texture. It was life changing. I felt beautiful in my own skin for the first time in my life. I want to make it easy for all women of color to feel that same feeling, but styling highly textured hair is complicated, time consuming, and deeply inconvenient for many consumers. In fact, many consumers in this niche spend upwards of 3 hours on styling each time they wash. We have engineered new tech for textured hair to make styling faster, easier, and more convenient. I want all women to be able to work out, travel, and manage our families and careers without having to sacrifice basic hygiene or confidence in our appearance. Meet The Mint by Richualist, a thermal infuser and styler that brings your wash day into the 21st century. Metro Area Nonprofit Sector.” The report explores and addresses 10 critical issues faced by Black women and Black gender-expansive nonprofit leaders in the Washington D.C. Metro area, and outlines a path to establish the necessary infrastructure to help them thrive. While the report was a regional initiative, the data it produced is consistent with the same challenges we see with Black women nonprofit leaders that we work with all over the country. In this insightful discussion, Dr. Wilds Lawson shares more in depth insights about the report results, recommended infrastructure components to meet the needs of Black women nonprofit leaders, and shares her vision for what organizations must do to create more equitable workplaces where Black women can thrive.   About Tamara Tamara is the president and CEO of Washington Area Women's Foundation, where she leverages her extensive expertise and influential leadership to actively advance The Women's Foundation's mission of fostering economic security for women and girls of color throughout the Washington metropolitan region. Now he runs the most successful luxury team in Washington D.C. and he has a seat at the table with the city's most influential.   How did craft his own educational path and build his highly successful business?   In this episode, Daniel shares his inspiring story, how he carved his path and what it takes to run a white glove service in the nation's capital.   I put myself through the equivalent of 10 years at Harvard in terms of what I know about real estate, people and scenarios. -Daniel Heider   Things You'll Learn In This Episode   -Developing a white glove service From John Stamos to Henry Kissinger, who are the famous people Daniel has met? Gina Schaefer knows a thing or two about building a business in non-traditional ways. Gina is the founder and Co-CEO of a chain of Ace Hardware stores located in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, MD, Montgomery County and Northern VA. She is a passionate entrepreneur who grew her company from one to 13 stores in only 14 years and now leads a multimillion-dollar business that employs more than 300 people. She is dedicated to maintaining a strong corporate culture and is selling her company to her teammates through an ESOP. Gina's big passion is developing urban markets, supporting small businesses, and helping women succeed in all aspects of the hardware industry. She has tirelessly focused on the “Return to Main Street” movement in her city of Washington, D.C., to promote Shop Local campaigns and community revitalization in urban areas. Gina has received numerous accolades for her many accomplishments, including being the recipient of the Women Who Mean Business award from the Washington Business Journal of 2009, being recognized as an industry Top Gun in 2011 by the National Retail Hardware Association, being honored by Profiles in Diversity Journal as one of its Women Worth Watching in 2013 and recognized by Hardware and Building Supply Dealer as one of 14 of the 2016 “People of the Year.” Her book, Recovery Hardware, was published in 2022 and chronicles her business growth and the lessons she learned from hiring folks in recovery – proving that leaders can build a business in non-traditional ways. Episode in a Tweet: I am a far better leader because I am open to learning from non-traditional teachers. Second chances transform communities and change lives—and they often start with one business at a time. Background: I absolutely love this interview. Gina Schafer is one of the most inspiring leaders I've had the pleasure of meeting. We can all learn from her vision, gumption, grit, and compassion. Not only did she open an Ace Hardware store in a rundown but regentrifying community in Washington DC with no prior experience with hardware, she and her husband built their business by giving those in addiction recovery a chance to change their lives and find meaning and purpose in their work. Her compassion touches my heart – I, too, know what it's like to have a second chance at getting things right. During the episode, Gina shares how she grew her Ace Hardware store empire to 13 stores, even though she had never touched a power tool in her life. She tells us how she hired a person in recovery without knowing it before he joined the company and how he taught her many things about life, hardware, and second chances. Gina and her husband also decided to sell their stores to their employees through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) and why she hopes that someday Ace Hardware DC will employ millionaire cashiers. Gina is no doubt proof that one can build a business in a non-traditional way. This heartful interview will surely inspire you. Please have a listen and let me know what you think! The reason why I think this is a fascinating story for some of those persons who have not listened to her story is that she received her 8a Certification at the age of 60. Corliss “Mama U” Udoema served for over 20 years in the US Marine Corps, as an Assistant Officer in Charge for the Facility Supports Contracts, and as a Supervisory Procurement Analyst in the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, respectively.  Then, in 2006, she founded Contract Solutions, Inc. (CSI), a professional staffing and management support services company providing acquisition support, training solutions, human resources, and technology solutions. She is also the President and founder of Agape Love in Action, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to helping people in need.  With all of these, her motto in delivering excellence is a reflection on why she is an acclaimed businesswoman and CSI is part of the Inc. 5000 list for the last consecutive 3 years, and the 2019 USDA Small Business Contractor of the Year, among others.  More importantly, Mama U wants to be known for her work in philanthropy, recently she's been ranked in the top 5 companies by the Washington Business Journal in terms of their philanthropy. Mama U has a different perspective on how she looks at government contracts, so I want you to have the same perspective as well moving forward with your government contracting journey. Let's welcome our Govcon Giant, Corliss “Mama U” Udoema.
