This the annual Thanksgiving prayer podcast of 2Days Denarius. It provides three Holiday prayers to listeners to use them before the Holiday meal. The prayers may be found at the 15 minute mark. These prayers come from an unnamed Puritan, John F Kennedy (1963), and Rev. Thomas. It also gives some Scripture reading on thanksgiving, along with a short narrative on the historical roots of what eventually became a great American Holiday. The Puritan prayer comes from a book titled, "The Valley of Vision," which is published by Banner of Truth Publishers (banneroftruth.org). Song "Most of Our Time" is used by songwriter/performer, Pastor Steve Hereford, of the Changed By Grace Church in Jacksonville FL. His wonderful Scripture songs may be found on Spotify by searching "Steve Hereford."

Moshe Kasher has lived many lives as a subculture vulture - a hearing child of deaf parents, an addict at 15, in recovery at 16, a raver, a culturally Jewish standup comedian, an old school Burner and a longtime Gate volunteer. With Andie Grace and Stuart Mangrum he explores how Burning Man is a waterboard of wonder where weirdos go to feel normal, and norms go to feel weird, and that the sweet spot is when you experience something that makes you say “Wait, What?!?”They talk through how Black Rock City has evolved, from subcultures like the rave scene and AA meetings, to the transitional realm from the default world, the infamous Gate. Listen in on their playful tales of culture-jamming and utopia-tizing. A focus on gratitude is typical this time of year. But more often than not, the cognitive or behavioral nods we give gratitude around Thanksgiving can feel a little limp, rote, and unedifying. If you feel like this American holiday has been lacking in meaning, maybe what you need is to infuse it with a Japanese practice. The Naikan method of self-reflection grew out of Buddhist spirituality and has been recognized by psychologists as a way to develop greater self-awareness, gratitude, empathy, and direction. Naikan involves asking yourself three questions: What have I received from others? What have I given others? What troubles and difficulties have I caused others?Gregg Krech, who is the executive director of the ToDo Institute, which promotes principles of psychology based on Eastern traditions, has created a Thanksgiving-specific version of Naikan that helps practitioners dig further into its first question. Today on the show, we talk about the way Naikan differs from mainstream gratitude practices and is based less on feeling and more on seeing the world objectively. Gregg shares six prompts that can help you recognize the reality of how you're being supported in the world, cultivate the art of noticing, and embrace life's grace.Resources Related to the PodcastThe ToDo Institute's free Thanksgiving Guide to Self-Reflection booklet — scroll down, enter your email into the form, and a PDF of the booklet will be sent to you.Gregg's previous appearances on the AoM podcast:#425: Action Over Feelings #671: Begin the New Year by Reflecting on These 3 Life-Changing QuestionsNaikan: Gratitude, Grace, and the Japanese Art of Self-Reflection by Gregg KrechAoM Podcast #906: Stop Being a ComplainerAoM Article: The Spiritual Disciplines — Gratitude Sunday Firesides: Graduate From the Kindergarten Class of GratitudeAoM Podcast #459: Beyond Gratitude Lite — The Real Virtue of ThankfulnessHow to Fight Entitlement and Develop Gratitude in Your KidsAoM Article: The George Bailey Technique — Mentally Erase Your Blessings for Greater Joy and OptimismConnect with Gregg KrechThirty Thousand Days Website

Most Americans are familiar with the story BEHIND the Thanksgiving holiday, but fewer know how it came to BE an enduring national tradition in the first place. The process involved several decades of early American bureaucracy, two of the nation's greatest presidents and even the intervention of a magazine editor. But how did all these disparate elements figure into the establishment of the holiday we know and love today? A Freedom Worth Striving For - Reflections in Independence on the American Holiday 4th of JulyWhat makes freedom exalted? What can our students aspire to when the "freedom" they have been taught to cherish is either - in the case of politics and social orders - profoundly inequitable and even harmful or - as in the case of personal freedoms - exacerbates a sense of existential anxiety with its proliferation of choices and optionality and its dearth of guidance and directives that ennoble. In this short reflection, Amy Edelstein explores freedom, purpose, and courage in the footsteps of Paul Tillich, and looks at how we can create classroom structures that promote the aspiration towards a more profound expression of our humanity and potential. Support the show

Recorded  June 13, 2022Here's the thing. We totally appreciate the sentiment behind making Juneteenth a holiday. We know it was an attempt to acknowledge and support Black people in America. The thing about American holidays though, is that, as a rule, holidays will be commercialized and in the case of Juneteenth, the commercialization is not  uplifting. We honestly think it would have been better NOT to make it a holiday. There are a number of racially inequitable systems in America that desperately need attention (like Health Care, Financial and Educational to name a few) much more than the need for a day off work and some poorly branded Juneteenth ice-cream. Oooh and wait till you hear the true story near the end! Y'all we are straight up venting today.
