Senior writer Alex Casey spent the past couple of months deep in local television, leading one of our most ambitious projects to date: The Spinoff top 100 NZ TV shows of the 21st century. Every day this week we have counted down 20 shows, each given its time in the sun as a crucial piece in our cultural puzzle. On Friday, we released the final 20, crowning a winner and drawing to a close more than 30,000 words published on New Zealand Television in one week. Alex joins Madeleine Chapman to discuss the complex process of judging local television, the surprise hits and the value in looking back at what we've produced as a country. Aesha Scott is one of the stars of the Bravo show “Below Deck.” Some of you will be massive fans of the woman crowned NZ TV personality of the year. But I guess some of you would have no idea who she is. Either way, you are in for a treat! I've done over 100 podcast episodes so far and this might be the wildest episode yet. This true-blue kiwi chick is amazing- relentlessly positive and just naturally likeable and hilarious. But also, so authentic.I think this may be Aesha Scott as you have never heard before- she was so open, raw and vulnerable about a lot of really tough life events. We chat about her mum's battle with alcohol and this impact that had for Aesha as a young girl.Reflections on her parents' divorce.Losing her older brother to a brain tumor. Her recent therapy journey. Her ADHD diagnosis as a kid.How she landed a role on one of the world's biggest reality TV shows and so much more. Please support the legends who support the podcast.https://radixnutrition.co.nz/I was a huge fan of Radix even before they became sponsors. Sassafraz Marshall-Johnson is an absolute gem making a path for herself in the TV & Film industry. It is near impossible to define what she 'does' to any one title - camera operator, crew member, it is ever-evolving. One thing I can ascertain is that she lives in a world of creativity & action, full with fascinating people + places. With powerhouse credits including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, her momentum continues to accelerate with experiences involving traditional TV & film, to music videos, and kiwi classics – dancing with the stars & jono and ben. During this chat we dive into her journey from the starting point of formal study, to amazing opportunities on live sets, to commiting and pursuing a passion in an incredibly competitive field of film. With a beaming smile and an evitably exciting, long-career before her, it is really a pleasure to welcome sassafraz to Tall Poppy Talk! If you say you don't know who Leigh Hart is, I'd probably raise an eye brow.He has been part of the New Zealand comedy and TV landscape for two decades now.He is also the face of Hellers sausages, the creator of Wakachangi beer and, more recently, the insanely good Snackachangi chips THE best Salt n Vinegar chips in the world).BUT whether you know him or not, I think you'll be a fan of Leigh after this. It's a fascinating insight into the mind of a creative genius. We get real deep and talk about his childhood which included a whole year without seeing his parents. His entire TV career and which of his old work he regrets now, and how the famous snackachngi chips came about.Lee also reflects on his marriage breakup, the resilience needed to get through it, and how he has become more emotionally vulnerable with age. This was my favourite part of the conversation. His honestly and vulnerability was profound. Thanks to my friends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. I am a daily user of their protein powder. Start every day with a shake for breakfast. Their banana flavor is incredible. They are much more than amazing and delicious protein powder though. Angela Ayers is an icon in the entertainment industry throughout Australia and New Zealand becoming the golden girl of NZ TV through her appearances with Peter Sinclair and Craig Scott in the musical TV shows Happen Inn and Sing in the 70's. This led to her being voted “NZ's Queen of Television” and “Most Popular Female Artist”. Shortly after moving to Australia, she won the plum role of Maggie in A Chorus Line subsequently winning the only scholarship the New York Shakespearian Festival Trust had ever awarded to study Jazz/Ballet in Los Angeles.A steady stream of significant roles in Musical Theatre kept her in Australia throughout the 80's including West Side Story, The Rocky Horror Show, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Cabaret, Chicago, Guys and Dolls and Jerry's Girls. She appeared regularly on all National Variety TV Shows in Australia throughout the 90's such as The Don Lane Show, The Mike Walsh Show, Hey Hey It's Saturday and The Two Ronnie's Specials; as well as many TV programs in guest roles and in commercials. In 1998, she wrote her own one woman cabaret show entitled I Can Cook Too, performing with the legendary Jazz Pianist Ray Alldridge. In a career of many highlights, Angela rates one of them as singing the New Zealand National Anthem to over 90,000 people at the MCG Bledisloe Cup Match. She was a regular favourite entertainer in the 1980's and 1990's on Cruise ships and entertained troops in the Sinai with the late Ricky May. Returning to NZ she starred in musicals such as 42nd St, Jerry's Girls, and Mum's the Word. There were numerous television credits in Shortland Street, Spin Doctors and Menopause the Musical in both Australia and New Zealand. Then in 2014, Angela played Miss Potts in Hairy Maclary at The Sydney Opera House. Angela's cabaret show, ‘I Can Cook Too' is in demand throughout Australia and is popular with the Senior Citizens Concerts.Even more so, is her new show “Simple Dreams” the amazing songs of Linda Ronstadt. Kim Crossman catapulted into fame in New Zealand when she was cast as Sophie McKay on the hit show Shortland Street in 2007. Since then Kim has boldly put her hand up for a number of gigs, including TV presenting and acting between NZ and the States. In this ep we talk about the reality of juggling the unknown between jobs, how unglamorous things can really be when chasing your dream and what has to be sacrificed to get to the top? What is it like growing up in the public eye when you are still working out who you are and how much does this impact body image issues? I recorded this chat with Kim a couple of months ago when she was hosting the NZ TV show Snack Masters and she's an absolute delight. Enjoy! Patrick Gower, or Paddy as he is known, was one of my first and favourite New Zealand news discoveries. Not that I discovered him in the sense of a talent scout. As you'll hear in the podcast, Paddy moved years ago from print to broadcast, where he established himself as one of the most well-known and loved NZ TV personalities. What fascinates me about Paddy is that his on-screen persona is so close to the off-screen reality. Also that he has no discernible “TV voice”, is a master analyst and communicator, and seems to love the constant attention that comes his way. For all his comfort in the limelight, however, Paddy is a sensitive guy and regularly goes through torture, often self-inflicted, in the course of his profession.A great example is Paddy's public self-examination over a poor interview he conducted in 2018 with far-right commentators Stefan Molyneux and Lauren Southern. I was standing by as he conducted that interview, and I can verify it was not good. Most journalists would have buried it: Paddy made it a key element in his riveting documentary Patrick Gower: On Hate.Text versus audioSubscribers to this newsletter are building steadily, which is wonderful. More recently, she's moved into the world of films and TV. She's directed a number of award-winning short films both in NZ and overseas. In 2014 she won Best Supporting Actress at the New Zealand Film Awards for her work on vampire mockumentary 'What We Do In The Shadows' . She's created two feature films so far, The Inland Road and The Breaker Upperers. For the latter, she co-wrote, co-directed and co-starred with her friend Madeleine Sami and the film went on to be bought by Netflix. She's been more of a regular feature on our NZ TV screens in recent years, starring in comedies Funny Girls and Educators. Jackie is also passionate about mentoring young practitioners as they come through the performing arts industry. Kia Ora! It was the NZ TV awards last night, and although Dr Ashley Bloomfield was nominated for personality of the year, he then pulled out and instead Hilary Barry from TVNZ's Seven Sharp won, still just as deserving though! We caught up with Hilz Baz about her night and her win, and her apparent love of the bar. We also discussed how Matthew McConaughey's mum openly talked about the fact that her husband (Matthew's dad) passed away while making love to her, but she discussed this in an interview while Matthew sat next to her looking as embarrassed as ever. So we asked you guys, what is the one embarrassing story your parents always bring up around you, that makes you want to sink into a hole...?! Finally, Ben told a hilarious yarn about what his friend accidentally did with his mother-in-law, so hilarious, and we discovered Ben may have a skeleton in the closet about his own mother-in-law too! Enjoy.

Tomorrow marks the 60th anniversary of the first television broadcast in New Zealand. The first programming included an episode of Robin Hood, an interview with a ballerina and live music. Sounds like quite a two hours! The old studios where the first broadcast was screened from is now home to the Gus Fisher Gallery which from the beginning of August will be presenting an exhibition about the first television in New Zealand. Lisa Beauchamp is the curator of that exhibition.
