South Asian American representation in television and movies is on the rise. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe debuting its first South Asian superhero in 2021 and “Never Have I Ever” winning big at the People's Choice Awards, Hollywood has begun to cast South Asians for big roles and tell authentic South Asian stories. But representation behind-the-scenes is just as important as it is in front of the camera: writers, directors and producers are the ones who determine who to cast and how to portray characters on-screen. As part of KQED's annual Youth Takeover week, Santa Clara High junior Khadeejah Khan and Monte Vista High junior Mahi Jariwala talk with South Asians working in the industry about their careers and what good representation looks like. Guests: Khadeejah Khan, junior, Santa Clara High School; member, KQED's Youth Advisory Board Mahi Jariwala, junior, Monte Vista High School; member, KQED's Youth Advisory Board Jasmine Baten, research fellow, UCLA Center for Scholars & Storytellers Vali Chandrasekaran, writer, "Modern Family" and "30 Rock" Raj Raghavan, head of talent, Color Creative Richa Moorjani, actress, "Never Have I Ever"

In case you missed it, we're re-releasing an episode from last season, chosen by our Save As intern, Emily Kwok. It's an Emily's Pick! Should the Brady Bunch House be in the National Register of Historic Places? Why not? asks alum Jonathan Kaplan. In his master's thesis, the TV writer-turned-heritage conservationist makes a case for designating sites specifically for their use in movies and TV shows. Along with literary precedent dating back to Chaucer, Jonathan cites the deep meaning and shared cultural experiences these places create. If a place inspires meaning, does it matter where that meaning comes from? Does reality matter in these fact-fluid times? Join us for a fascinating conversation that's just the tip of the iceberg. This week on The New Arab Voice we're examining MENA representation in TV, film and gaming. Communities from the region have historically been demonised on screen, condemned to either silence or sterotypes. However, the past year has brought major release that have diversified who we see on screen and the stories that are shared on global platform. We explore a number of these releases include Netflix comedy series Mo and the film Farha about Palestine during the 1948 Nakba. We also delve into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, looking at what they've done well in terms of representation and what they can do better. Also in this episode, we plug in and have a look at the mistakes that video games have made, when it comes to the representation of Arabs and Muslims, and also the cultural errors that video game publishers have made. On this episode, we speak with Saeed Taji Farouky (@saeedtaji), a Palestinian-British filmmaker and film educator, Tariq Raouf (@tariq_raouf), a Palestinian-American freelance writer based in Seattle, Swara Salih (@spiderswarz), a Kurdish-American writer, podcaster, and the co-hosts the Middle Geeks podcast (@TheMiddleGeeks), and finally, Nazih Fares (@nazihfares), the head of communication and localization at Four Winds Entertainment (@The4winds_Ent).Sign up to the weekly newsletter here. This podcast is written and produced by Rosie McCabe and Hugo Goodridge. Matthew Del Negro believes that we learn more about ourselves in our losses than in our victories. He is a hugely successful actor– with major roles on the Sopranos, West Wing, Scandal, and currently starring on Showtime's City on a Hill with Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge. Despite his long list of impressive acting credits, Matt has discovered more about his true self by overcoming the “10,000 No's” that he has been dealt throughout his career. While some actors might prefer to keep up the facade of a perfect life and career, Matt chose to get real by starting his podcast, 10,000 No's. He interviews his guests –many of whom are also successful actors, including Lorraine Bracco and Kevin Bacon– about their own experiences with rejection and the fear of not being able to find the next great role. Matt recognized that sharing these experiences and wisdom would help other young actors, and he quickly realized that the idea of turning a No into a Yes could be helpful to anyone– not just actors. Matt talks about the importance of being bold enough to take a risk and believe you will succeed. And we talk about not caring what other people think of us when we decide to enter the arena. The hardest thing for new writers, and many seasoned pros, is to sit down and start writing your screenplay. Sure, you've been contemplating and telling everyone who will listen what a great idea you have for a script for months but haven't written anything down. Then, you see a movie trailer that looks exactly like the movie you have in your head, and you want to curl up in a ball and punch yourself in the face. 'The ultimate outsider creates a global community through a passion for writing.' In film or book publishing this sentence would be called a logline, a brief (usually one-sentence) summary of a television program, film, or book that states the central conflict of the story.Today's guest is Collin Lieberg a screenwriter, creative executive, and world traveler. He has spent many years living abroad and feeling out of place, so he writes about outsiders struggling to fit in. He has a background in academia, management, marketing, and retail that all inform his characters and stories. Collin is the Creative Executive for Cobalt Knight, a genre production company focused on telling feature, series and comic book stories about the human condition with touches of social commentary. It's impossible to overstate how important a role audio plays in the film viewing experience. While it's perfectly natural to be drawn to the visual side of filmmaking, those striking visuals don't hold the same weight without strong cinematic sound design to back them up. Whereas a painting is purely visual and a song can be purely aural, cinema combines sight and sound for a unified experience where one bolsters and elevates the other. In this episode Leslie talks to Craig Nimens, the Vice President of Sound Dogs.com, Inc. a commercial online library of sound effects based in Marina Del Rey, California, with offices in Canada, Argentina, and Uruguay. It is the first and largest online sound effects and production music library on the Internet launched in May 1997.
