In this bonus episode, the crew gets real about parenting—then vs. now. We reflect on how we were raised, the lessons (and trauma) we inherited, and what we plan to keep or leave behind as we raise the next generation. From old-school discipline to gentle parenting, we break down the shifts in parenting styles and ask: Are we doing better, or just different?Whether you're a parent, thinking about having kids, or just here for the real talk, this episode is full of laughs, insights, and a few hard truths. Tap in and let us know—what parenting lessons are you keeping, and what are you leaving in the past?
Kurtis chats to John about how he raised his kids and what shapes how he went about that. They talk about developing independence, work ethic, new parenting styles and old parenting styles, and more. Get in touch at the website Sign up for Fruit
In this episode, I did something a little different. Have you ever looked at your own parenting style and compared it to how you were parented growing up? Maybe you have certain traditions or sayings that your parents used when parenting you or perhaps it's how you nurture your child's talents. Sometimes we also may notice some of the things our parents did that we may not want to carry on in our own parenting journey and that's perfectly fine, too. If you are co-parenting, you must take on a style that joins both of your backgrounds together. If you are single parenting, you may have to make adjustments based on your particular circumstance using whatever support system you have. Well, growing up in a single-parent home allowed me to see many of the sacrifices my mother had to make but the way she parented me also made me the person I am today. So, I interviewed my mother, Linda Sagoe, in this episode to impart her wisdom to all of us.*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!

In this episode, AGT unravels the core effects old-school parenting can have on their children. I share my personal experience with traditional Latino parenting, but it's fair to say anyone with old-school parenting can attest to the correlation between people-pleasing and deep-rooted social norms. AGT, also provides practical strategies and empowering tips to help break free from the people-pleasing pattern. Tune in for breaking the chains of old-school traction parenting and empowering yourself or your loved ones to embrace authenticity, assertiveness, and genuine connection. Happy Summer! Most of us want our kids to have good manners. We want them to grow up to be responsible citizens of the world. We want them to NOT embarrass us in front of grandparents. I consider these old school basics. Unfortunately, many of the old school values were taught in a way that ended up shaming, berating and belittling kids. So how do we support our kiddos in learning all the “things"? I believe it’s a dance that combines these old school values with new age methods that don’t mutilate their spirit. In the coming weeks, I’ll be covering the Mastermind Parenting choreography to effectively accomplish this. I’ll be discussing a few touchy subjects we don’t normally talk about. Like how to handle potty talk, penis and vagina touching and whether to force or not to force grandparent affection. My message today is that when it comes to manners and some of the old school values, we wanna use common sense. Maybe there's more to this whole identity thing after all. While our kids are the center of our world, how do we raise them to know they aren't the center of the world? Patrick and John go deeper to explore a parent's role in cultivating moral character, this time with some guidance from the book 8 Keys to Old School Parenting for Modern-Day Families by Michael Mascolo. They talk through why their generation often gets labeled as entitled and how they can prioritize virtues that avoid that sort of behavior in their own kids.
