In this episode of the Parent Them Successful Podcast, we uncover what to look for if you believe your child has an undetected hearing defect. In the IEP world, hearing defects, or as IDEA calls it, possible “Hard of Hearing” eligibility, is considered a low-incidence eligibility category. That means that this eligibility category is somewhat rare and special funding is set aside for these students to access equipment and other tools they may need to access the general curriculum. So, if you suspect your child is suffering from a hearing defect, I will share what to look for, misbehaviors that are often misdiagnosed, and treatment options. So, tune in until the end to learn more about what you need to know. In this episode, I did something a little different. Have you ever looked at your own parenting style and compared it to how you were parented growing up? Maybe you have certain traditions or sayings that your parents used when parenting you or perhaps it's how you nurture your child's talents. Sometimes we also may notice some of the things our parents did that we may not want to carry on in our own parenting journey and that's perfectly fine, too. If you are co-parenting, you must take on a style that joins both of your backgrounds together. If you are single parenting, you may have to make adjustments based on your particular circumstance using whatever support system you have. Well, growing up in a single-parent home allowed me to see many of the sacrifices my mother had to make but the way she parented me also made me the person I am today. So, I interviewed my mother, Linda Sagoe, in this episode to impart her wisdom to all of us.*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!

In this episode, we discuss intergenerational trauma. This inherited trauma can make deep imprints on your overall well-being. The trauma responses you experience today can sometimes be rooted in past experiences you may not have been present for originally. Maybe you weren't abused growing up, but your parents or grandparents were. Maybe you didn't face discrimination or live through a war, but your great-grandparents did. Factors such as these can have negative effects on familial relationships and impact how your children navigate life. Our expert guest educates us about intergenerational trauma while sharing his personal story of trial and triumph within his relationship with his father. Did you know that about 11.6% of kids had anxiety in 2012, up 20% from 2007? But during the pandemic, those numbers nearly doubled, such that 20.5% of youth worldwide now struggle with anxiety symptoms, as reported by the American Psychological Association. So if your child is in that number, they are not alone. I often get asked what causes my child's anxiety? It could be a number of factors such as any unexpected change or instability, loss, serious illness, death of a loved one, violence, or abuse. Of course these are just a few situations that can lead some kids to become anxious. Sometimes it could simply be learned behavior. Growing up in a family where others are fearful or anxious also can "teach" a child to be afraid too. But interventions can help them overcome, especially in the form of stories. That's why , I share my top 12 children's books that help children manage worry and anxiety. (This is not an exhaustive list but a great resource to get you started.) In this episode, we talk about the summer slip n slide. No, not the fun swim-like activity that gives you a high water bill, but the one that will have your child forgetting so much of what was learned throughout the year. Basically, it refers to the phenomenon where students, particularly school-aged children, experience a loss of academic skills and knowledge over the summer break when they are not actively engaged in learning. In this episode, I share with you some very powerful information about sleep health and your child's learning, growth, and development. Anyone who knows me knows that I love talking about sleep health. This is often one of the first things I ask students about when I do student interviews. I want to know what time they usually go to bed and wake up. I want to know if they sleep through the night or are they often awakened. This gives me a lot of insight into the problems they are having in school. This is why we take a deep dive in the science of sleep and how it might be the reason behind why your child is struggling, behaviorally or academically. In this episode, we talk about your struggling reader. Every year, I look at the referrals for special education testing that come across my desk and the #1 reason for referral is for children who are reading well below grade level. The #2 type of referral is for the Autism eligibility. It is quite clear that poor reading skills are a major concern for many - not just the teachers but for parents, too. Think about how you felt when you attended the parent-teacher conference where you were told that your child is “far behind in reading”. Maybe there were discussions about memory issues, not knowing letter sounds, not being able to sound out CVC words, and so on. If this has been your story, I share some very important steps you need to take before you even consider special education test. Why? Because sometimes a reading problem can be corrected with interventions and other times, there truly is a handicapping condition. So be sure to stick around for some important information to consider and also this week's parenting challenge and your loving reminder. This episode's topic is both important and challenging: Why do some kids struggle with problem behavior? It's a question that many parents, educators, and caregivers grapple with, and understanding the underlying factors can make a significant difference in how we approach and support these children. We start by acknowledging that every child is unique, and there's no universal answer to why some kids exhibit problem behavior. It's a nuanced topic that involves a combination of factors. One significant aspect to consider is that children often communicate through behavior. In this episode, we explore some of the common contributing factors that contribute to why your child may be experiencing problematic behavior. Life can be full of surprises - some good and some not so good. But when parents are dealing with something hard, often our kids are, too. And though our kids are usually our number one priority, ironically they often take a backseat when we're trying to survive whatever it is we're trying to survive. Our special guest, Sara Olsher, has a goal and that is to help parents help their kids during the worst thing that's ever happened to them — that could be a divorce or a health crisis. She leaves us with actionable takeaways that will help, whether you're in crisis or just surviving life with kids. She shares what works in reducing anxiety and also shares with us why open communication is so essential. Our children need coping skills just like we do, and there are certain types that kids need long-term to be resilient when their lives get tough. So get ready for some real talk today. WARNING: Controversial TopicLet me ask you a question. What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “financial literacy”? Is this something that only parents should teach their children or do you think the schools should add this as a part of the education system? I've heard many old school parents say that they took a class or two in this area where they learned how to balance a checkbook and learned about basic financial principles that may not have been taught at home. I've also seen on rare occasions, classroom teachers who turn their entire class into a token economy where students pay rent for desk and earn class money for doing their work. The token economy may work in an elementary school or middle school setting but what about in a high school setting? Should it be a separate class period dedicated to teaching financial principles? Well, believe it or not, some states are requiring this to be included in the standard curriculum while others are not. But why? To help us take a deeper dive, our special guest is going to shed some light on this situation and give you tools you need to address the issues with your school board. In this episode, we talk about a truly pervasive issue in the parenting world. Is it me or does it seem like kids just don't do well taking direction these days. You give a directive and they say “no, I don't want to” or maybe they just outright ignore you as if they didn't hear a thing. As a parent, what do you do? Maybe you yell. Maybe you offer a sweet deal or bribe. Maybe you give them an ultimatum which kicks their defiant behaviors into high gear. Of course, the cycle continues. Well, there has to be a better way to handle these difficult situations at every age and stage of childhood development. That's why we have a very special guest today to help us with this very issue. She has helped over 10,000 parents, so you're not alone. In this episode, we answer the question: Why are we seeing more children struggling with emotional regulation? We have conditions like Oppositional Defiant Disorder being diagnosed younger and younger. Anxiety Disorder diagnoses are also on the rise. Why are we seeing this trend? Has societal change with the introduction of so many handheld devices become a contributing factor? Have our children gotten away from the social nuances that accompany good old fashion “play”? Can we give our children better stability in emotional wellness if we do something different and more intentional, which frankly, may be considered, nowadays, out of the norm? Today, our special guest is going to shed light on ways we can get back to supporting “play” and how it is connected to children's overall well-being.About This Epsiode's GuestWebsite: thegeniusofplay.org*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!
In this episode, we talk about the real world. We really discuss how we are preparing our children for adulthood. Every decision we make or don't make impacts their upbringing and their view of the world. This is why it's so important to be very mindful of how we show up for them. I cannot have this conversation on my own, so that's why our guest expert, Damon Eddy, helps bring clarity to ways we, as parents, can ensure that our children are being raised to become loving and impactful adults in this new and ever-changing world. In this episode, I want to pass along a message to parents who have children in special education or who you suspect needs additional support. I talked with many of my colleagues in the field from across the nation about what they want parents to know, specifically what they want you to know that they can't say at an IEP meeting or as school personnel because of the repercussions they may face from their superiors. Sometimes we, as school psychologists, find ourselves in this kind of weird space intertwined between school politics and advocating for children and families in a way that may go against the grain. So, this episode is dedicated to all the parents who want to be empowered to ensure that your child is getting the best education possible and without the games. So tune in and take notes. In this episode, we talk about something very important - bullying. Yes, it is a very popular topic, but it can be a scary thing to talk about as your child gets older and especially if he or she has special needs. It is a parents worst nightmare to find out that your child has been a victim of bullying, especially if it cost them their life. I was reading the news the other day and saw that one family in my local area had received a $27 million settlement in a lawsuit over bullying death of a 13-year-old Moreno Valley, Ca student. This case has made national headlines because the child was not protected by the school district. Although this family was able to get financial restitution for what happened, no one can ever put a dollar amount on your child's life. As parents, we need to be equipped with knowledge that will ensure our children are not victims of bullying and that we know what steps to take if bullying is suspected.Resources Mentioned in This Episode: https://abc7.com/diego-stolz-settlement-27-million-moreno-valley/13778068/www.commonsensemedia.orgwww.pacer.org/bullying/resources/parentswww.stopbullying.gov*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!

In this episode, we discuss a very important topic with you regarding the mental health state of our children due to academic stressors and pressures that are having difficulty managing. There are so many warning signs that you need to be aware of so that you can intervene early and help your child cope or even re-calibrate so that they are in a healthier mind space. I bring back a special guest from Episode 73, Sheila Akbar, to really help us understand what our children may be feeling and experiencing as these pressures rise up. She knows the importance of balance and also when it may be time for a child to make a shift their academic journey and pursuits. Make sure you stick around until the end because there are some things that you may need to consider if you are noticing that your child is feeling extremely overwhelmed, especially if their health is taking a dive because of it. There are many outside agencies and clinicians who provide a wide range of other options for therapy that you just won't find in the school setting, and neurofeedback therapy is one of them. Our special guest, Dianne Kosto, will be sharing her story along with some very valuable information so don't miss it.About This Episode's Special Guest:Website: www.symmetryneuropt.comSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/SymmetryNeuroPT/https://www.instagram.com/symmetryneuropt/https://www.linkedin.com/company/symmetryneuropt/https://twitter.com/symmetryneuropthttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC52hEehDheZTZ3NrzIWmHOQ*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!

Have you noticed how much our youth are using social media these days? YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat - it seems like they can spend countless hours on these platforms. Or maybe you're that parent who is either restricting your tween or teens' use altogether. Well, we all know that eventually, it will be a part of their normal social activity. This can be scary to think about with what we know about cyberbullying and online friendships or even dating relationships for that matter. But what if there was a way to prepare our children for these online interactions so that they are resilient against the odds? What if helping them build a stronger emotional intelligence can support them in managing the roller coaster of emotions that comes with social media altogether? If these are some of your concerns, there's no need to worry. Our special guest, Dr. Melanie McNally, is back with us to shed light on how emotional intelligence can help our tweens and teens maintain a healthy online presence. In this episode, we talk about storytelling. Not necessarily in an academic sense but in a life-sense. If you have a child who plans to attend college, this discussion is very important and informative. From a college's perspective, admissions staff are especially interested in seeing a student's potential to succeed in post-secondary school as well as their future career. They also want to ensure that your child is a person who will contribute to the education and careers of their classmates, so your child's lived experience will be critical in how they tell their story. So what exactly will your child need to know before writing that first essay? Learn more as I interview college admissions expert, Kate Stone, as she walk us through the process.
