Winker is currently 3rd in the NL in OPS, only trailing Betts and Atlanta's Marcell Ozuna. He also leads all of MLB in On Base Percentage (.500). Winker has struggled the past few seasons, but in 2021 he hit .305 /w a OPS of .949. (18:45) Joey Meneses was not in the lineup for another day. Gene Tenace could have played football for Woody Hayes at Ohio State but opted instead to play in the Majors as a Catcher and First Baseman. He won 3 World Series with the Oakland A's, earning MVP honors in 1972. He won another title as a key backup for the '82 Cardinals. Even today, he ranks 3rd all time for catchers in OPS, and 4th in On Base Percentage. Listen for some great stories from those Charley Finley-era Swingin' A's. Learn more about your ad choices. Battles with Roger Clemens paralleled to Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr dueling in Weehawken? That's what happens when Danny Tartabull steps into The Batter's Box! While “The Bull” has largely been out of the public eye since retiring from baseball in 1997, his legacy as one of the best right-handed hitters of the early '90s remains as vital as ever. Over the course of 14 big league seasons, he was selected to an All-Star Game, won a Slugging Percentage title, and knocked in 100+ runs five times. He also had a very memorable tenure as a member of the New York Yankees from 1992-1995. This week, he joins host Al Malafronte for an impartial conversation to set the record straight on his time here and revisit the highs and lows that came with playing on baseball's biggest stage. Tartabull's accomplishments as a Yankee were as strong as anyone's on a rebuilding team, having posted the squad's first .400 On-Base Percentage of the decade when the organization began to shift focus under legendary General Manager, Gene Michael. In 1993 he took his performance to the next level, posting the first 30 Homerun/100 RBI season by a Yankee in five years, leading the team in both said categories, as well as Runs Scored and Total Bases. However, his big contract was often a point of contention for owner George Steinbrenner, and the two clashed quite a bit as Tartabull explains. Whether it was landing on the field in a helicopter, threatening to move the team to New Jersey, or ripping Tartabull through the media, The Boss' theatrics were certainly well-publicized and created quite the backstage dynamic. Tartabull tells it all and then some, as it was fascinating to get such an in-depth look at a truly pivotal chapter in Yankee history from a star player's perspective. This is Tartabull's ultimate tell-all interview, and our chat will certainly satisfy not only the most passionate members of Yankees Universe, but all of the theatre fans in our audience as well. Tartabull loved his nights on Broadway and caught nearly every show that ran in the early and mid '90s. Whether it be Rent or Les Misérables, Tartabull had a front-row seat to the Broadway revolution and has some awesome stories to go along with it. He's also a bit of an actor in his own right, having guest-starred on Seinfeld twice at the request of the show's creator and lifelong Yankee fan, Larry David! His behind-the-scenes memories of working alongside David, Jerry Seinfeld, and Jason Alexander were great to listen to and provided some big laughs! "Baseball is in a weird place right now." Doug Mientkiewicz steps into The Batter's Box for Episode 78 in a conversation filled with epic baseball chatter, brutal honesty, and fantastic wisdom. Mientkiewicz's 12-year playing career spanned 1998-2009 for seven different teams and was highlighted by an Olympic Gold Medal for Team USA, a Gold Glove Award, a .360 lifetime On-Base Percentage, and a World Series Championship. While playing he also garnered a reputation as one of the best defensive 1st basemen of his era and a no-nonsense player who would do anything it took to win. This week, he joins host Al Malafronte to revisit his memorable time on Broadway as a member of the New York Yankees in 2007, as well as plenty of other moments that surrounded his eventful career. He also addresses the 2004 World Series final out ball controversy when he battled the Red Sox front office in order to stay true to his own morality. It wasn't pretty, but Mientkiewicz tells all and then some. The ultimate way to define Mientkiewicz is a "winner," and he's a firm believer in differentiating yourself from other performers in a competitive playing field - a principle that can serve hopefuls in both sports and theatre. He's also a master storyteller, and his Yankee tenure was filled with so many wonderful talking points. These include A-Rod and the Toronto stripper incident, special relationships with Joe Torre and Don Mattingly, and a strong affinity for Roger Clemens as a teammate. He certainly wasn't afraid to address some of the more uncomfortable moments he witnessed between A-Rod and Derek Jeter, and his thoughts on the changing nature of today's game...This week's Fastball Derby was also especially fun as Mientkiewicz discusses his love of the musical, Oklahoma, and even which of his former teammates would make the best Broadway leads! After being swept by the Baltimore Orioles in the opening series, the Red Sox took on the Tampa Bay Rays. This time, it was the Red Sox that swept the Rays and even their record to 3-3 in the American League East Division. In Game 1, Xander Bogarts went 4 for 5 an RBI and a run scored. JD Martinez homered in the 8th inning as the Red Sox totaled 11 Runs and 16 hits. Nick Pivetta started for the Red Sox and earned himself a win. He threw 5 plus innings and gave up 2 hits and 4 walks. Pivetta struck out 4 in 92 pitches. In game 2, there were many mishaps for both the Red Sox and the Rays. The most notable mistake came in the bottom of the 8th inning when Rafael Devers flied out to Right/Center Field. Martinez kept running from second base believing it was the last out. Martinez had to remain at second base. Unfortunately, it was a double play and the end of the inning. Matt Barnes came in relief to shut out the Rays in the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Diego Castillo came in for the Rays to close the game. On an 0-2 pitch, Christian Vasquez homered over the green monster to tie the game. Eventually, the game came to the end at the bottom of the 12th inning. JD Martinez hit the ball deep at Right Field. Ray's Randy Arozarena misjudged the ball that went over him. That resulted in Martinez in a double that scored Renfroe and Verdugo for the win. Lastly in game 3, the Red Sox scored 3 runs in the fourth, and 6 runs in the fifth inning on Ray's pitcher Ryan Yarbrough. ON the other side, Eovaldi earned his first win as he went 7 strong innings, striking out 7 and giving up 1 Earned Run with 3 hits. The Red Sox faced their first extra inning game on Tuesday night. The rule in extra innings is that the batter that created the last out in the previous inning, goes to second base at the start of the new inning. This is a great way for the game to be more exciting and prevent the game from extending the time. The game may have lasted four hours but was filled with action from both clubs. I have seen extra inning games similar to this in the minor leagues. MLB did have the minor league clubs practice and survey extra inning rules and it worked to perfection. The local team, Hartford Yard Goats, an affiliation to the Colorado Rockies, spent many games in extra innings. Managers strategize their game by executing sacrifice bunts and flies to help push the runner to third and in better scoring positions. We all can expect the managers to practice sacrifice hits throughout the season. Notable Red Sox RosterJD Martinez continues his success as he has a six game hitting streak. He hit one HR off of Chris Mazza. Christian Vasquez hit 2 Home runs in the series. One of them clutched to extra innings. And Xander Boegarts going 3 for 3 in the third game. Nick Pivetta and Nathan Eovaldi pitched well in the series. In 6 games, the Red Sox have not given up a home run. Team leaders so far through 6 games is JD Martinez batting a .440, 2 HRs, 11 RBIs, .481 On Base Percentage, and has a total of 11 Hits. In pitching, the stats are close but Nathan Eovaldi leads the team in 11 Strikeouts. As a team, The Red Sox increased their batting average. However, there is still concern about clutch hitting, particularly in the second game of the Rays when the Red Sox could have needed a guy similar to David Ortiz. It seems as though the only players that can be counted on are JD Martinez and Christian Vasquez. The Red Sox had struck out 27 times in the series. That is three more than the previous series against the Orioles. Kike Hernandez leads the team with 7 strike outs in 23 at bats. Devers, Dalbec, Bogaerts, and Cordero each have 5 strikeouts. On the previous episode in this podcast, I had Joe Aguiar as a guest and had plenty of words to describe the details on why the MLB pulled the All Star game out of Atlanta. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred listened to the civil rights group and the MLB Players Association. It was indeed a decision Manfred had to make as now the MLB will have the All Star game at Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies, Denver, Colorado. The MLB Standings by Division:In the AL East, it is a tight race with Yankees and Orioles on top. In the AL Central, Minnesota Twins are 4-2. IN the AL West, Houston Astros are 5-1. The Astros completed their series against the Anaheim Angels but the fans did not forget what happened two years ago with the cheating scandal. Fans tossed an inflatable trash can and a real one onto the field. In the National League East, The Mets and Nationals will make up the games not played in their double headers. But for now, the Philadelphia Phillies are leading the East. In the NL Central, The Cincinnati Reds lead the way and in the NL West, the LA Dodgers are 5-1. — The Red Sox-Orioles will match up again. This time the Red Sox will visit the Baltimore Orioles in a three game series. The game will start on Thursday, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:05 PM EST. The projected starter for the Red Sox will be Eduardo Rodriguez, who will be making his first start versus Matt Harvey. Harvey had no decision as he pitched 4 ⅔ innings striking out 4 and gave up 2 ER 6 hits and 1 walk. The second game will be on Saturday. Garrett Richard will make his second start against Bruce Zimmerman. Zimmerman earned his first win of the season pitched 6 strong innings, striking out 5 and giving up 3 ER, 4 hits and a home run from JD Martinez. On Sunday, the series closes with Nick Pivetta for the Red Sox and Jorge Lopez for the Orioles. Lopez will pitch against the Red Sox for the first time. In his career, the Red Sox has batted a .302 against Lopez. Rafael Devers has hit 2 HRs against him. Lopez's last start was against the New York Yankees as he only pitched 4 ⅔ innings in a 7-0 loss.

The two look at Spring Training this past week and the surprising performances coming from the outfield. Analytics 101 is also introduces as the two cover stats like On-Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage, and OPS, the combination of both.

Former MLB outfielder of 14 years, Shannon Stewart steps into the Batter’s Box for Episode 53 of Break a Bat! Stewart's career in the big leagues spanned from 1995-2008 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, and Oakland Athletics. A 1st-round draft pick in 1992, Stewart's talent and passion for his craft cemented his legacy as one of the best leadoff hitters of the late 1990's and early 2000's. During that time, he hit over .300 in six consecutive seasons from 1999-2004, scored 100+ runs four times, and accumulated a remarkable 202 hits in 2001. He'd go onto retire as a lifetime a .297 hitter with a .360 On-Base Percentage, and 1,653 hits to his name. In this episode, Stewart discusses living up to the pressure of performing as a highly-touted 1st-round draft pick, as well as the dilemma of having to choose between baseball and football after high school; a decision that he parallels to young performers that have to decide between stage or screen acting. He also revisits his phenomenal 2003 season in which he found himself in the heat of a pennant race with the Minnesota Twins, as he'd go onto finish 4th in MVP voting that season as the ultimate catalyst for their division-winning cast. Stewart has some particularly fond memories of his nights on Broadway while battling against the New York Yankees, and shares some great behind the scenes stories of a particularly special era for the Big Apple through the eyes of a visiting performer. Just like Broadway, a lot has changed around baseball since Stewart's playing career ended, to which he provides some phenomenal insight, and big laughs when talking about his life in retirement. He even discusses which of his former teammates would make the best Timon and Pumba in The Lion King on Broadway! An exciting baseball hodgepodge opens the conversation into how much momentum can swing teams around in the division. Eric has a Bell to ring for the Pirates, and MB laments the unexpected decline of an important Braves hurler. MB attempts to explain what's up with the Sabermetric stat weighted On Base Percentage (or wOBA) via song. High Sponsor: Skywalker OG Inside Scoop: Guy's Grocery Games Recorded: 5/15/19 Notes: Edwin Jackson is 35 years old. The best record of the 162-game era is the 2001 Seattle Mariners' 116-46. This equates to a regular season NFL record of about 12-4. Foltynewicz has had four starts, not three. All not great. Cody Bellinger has the outright highest swing in expected wOBA from 2018 to 2019, but Dansby is a close second.

Babe Ruth Hi Goal Getters, I wanted to let you know that we are starting a Private Facebook Group, Goal Getting Masters. If you would like join a group of like minded Goal Getters who want to become Goal Getting Masters, join us by Going to GoalGettingPodcast.com/masters to sign up and I will add you to the Facebook Group. Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Never Let the Fear of Striking Out Get in Your Way. - Babe Ruth Base ball players hate to strike out. It is a failure to not get on base. Your OBP, or On Base Percentage is critical in today's game. I first heard of this statistic when I read the book Money Ball by Michael Lewis. My then boss and COO of our company, a numbers guy, told me about the book. I downloaded an audiobook of Money Ball and listened to it. I hadn't been interested in baseball in a while and this opened my eyes to it once again. The book was made into a movie. The point was that having a home run is great, but the more times you get on base, the better chance you have of scoring. The odds of hitting it out of the park are low. Swinging for the fences is good, and like goals we want to have that Big Hairy Audacious Goal, that Grand Slam, but sometimes you have to work at our goals one step at a time. The more players you get on base in an inning, the better odds for scoring. Getting on base is getting hits (singles, doubles and triples), enduring through mediocre pitches to a Base on Balls, a Walk, drawing a Balk, or even getting hit by the ball (ouch). Striking out is often thought of as a failure. It's not good, but it happens. A pitcher will often try to paint the corners, or throw a curve or slider that looks like it's coming down the middle, but goes wide or low. Being able to watch the ball and waiting for the right pitch will result in 4 Balls before 3 Strikes and you are on base. If 4 batters are able to do that, you have 1 run and 3 more in line to continue. If you are afraid of Striking Out, you may not be able to wait for that 4th ball. If you fear the strike, you may swing at the low and inside pitch and Strike Out. Or you may walk to First Base. Don't Fear the Strike Out and you may still achieve your goal of getting on base.
