Every test in life makes us bitter or better, every problem comes to break us or make us. The choice is ours whether we become Victim or Victor. - Tammy S. Ernst       Tammy Ernst sounds like she trained at the same martial arts school as me. This quote from Tammy is very similar to the "mantra" we stated at the beginning and end of each class in our dojo. Shiken haramitsu daikoumyo This sacred Buddhist mantra in Japanese is taught and used by all members of the Bujinkan Dojo. The meaning as explained by my Sensei when I started training was: "In every encounter or experience in life, we have the chance to gain total enlightenment. It's up to us to determine if those experiences are positive or negative." This phrase became my mantra for life. This is how I like to look at the experiences I have in life. I try to look at all of them as positive as I can. You can see how Tammy's quote is so similar. Every test in life makes us bitter or better, every problem comes to break us or make us. The choice is ours whether we become Victim or Victor. We choose whether we will be better or bitter. We choose to let our experiences break us or make us. We choose to be the Victim or the Victor. It's a tough choice for some, easy for many. Unfortunately, most people choose to be the Victim. They choose to let the tough life experiences break them, they choose to be bitter. What do you choose? Are you a Victim or a Victor? Are you going to let life's experiences break you or make you. Will you choose bitterness or Betterness! Join me in choosing to be a Victor. TAKE TIME TO PULL THE WEEDS FROM YOUR LIFE THAT KEEP YOUR GARDEN FROM BLOOMING TO ITS GREATEST BEAUTY. ~TONY WOODALL   [bctt tweet=" SPRING CLEANING - TAKE TIME TO PULL THE WEEDS FROM YOUR LIFE THAT KEEP YOUR GARDEN FROM BLOOMING TO ITS GREATEST BEAUTY. ~TONY WOODALL" username="GoalsPodcast"] Spring Cleaning - I was reminded by a text yesterday about the need for Spring Cleaning. Yes, it's springtime and spring is a time in of renewal, rebirth, revitalizing. Spring Cleaning is almost a ritual at this time of year - as we often need to look at the things around us and think, "Do they still work in our gardens, our homes, and in our lives. The Spring is a great time to review our goals and if you made them, New Year's Resolutions. If you made New Year's Resolutions, most people have forgotten them already, or have given up on them by now. Have you? If you set goals for the first quarter, where are you? Are you almost complete? Are you still tracking them with your action plan? Maybe it's spring cleaning time in your life. Look at your life. What parts of your life, your garden of ideas and dreams, need some weeding? What closet in your mental house - your passions, need cleaning out? If you have plants, products, "Stuff" that doesn't make you better, move you forward, make you happy - maybe it's time to remove that from your place? As the person texting reminded me yesterday. Celebrate the spring. It's nature's way of starting over and seeing the brightness and beauty it brings. I'm grateful for my life and my ability to grow. Sometimes growth requires change. Cleaning out our closets and our minds helps to provide room for that growth. Take time this month to review what makes you happy, what makes you grow and what doesn't. Let go of that which holds you back. Grow! Have a Great Spring, my friends. Go out and make today a great day. Do have some cleaning to do? Do you need someone to help you review what you want to do with your life, where you want to be? Maybe you need someone to hold you accountable. I know I could have used that type of person as I started working on my Spring Cleaning. I offer coaching services for people that want to gain an advantage over the clutter of life and help you set your goals and keep you accountable as you strive to achieve those goals. S3Q2 - Springing to Success This Year

Spring is the time to find out where you are, who you are, and move toward where you are going. Spring is my favorite time of the year. We are just coming out of a cold, dreary, time in our life. That is unless you live in a tropical climate. Then spring may be just a little warmer than it was yesterday, weather wise. But I often think of spring as when we need to reflect back on where we are, who we are and where we want to be. That's why this quote hits home with me. Many do this reflection at the the beginning of the calendar year. In December and January, we start working on our goals for the coming year, defining what we want to be and work on by the end of the year. Me, I like thinking of spring as the beginning of a new cycle of life. That's what nature does. The spring is the rebirth of the new life after the winter freezes. I find I can better get a feel for where I am in life and where I want to be when the spring comes. But that's me. It doesn't matter when you begin. The key is to begin, to start this process when it is best for you. Regardless of when you start, it also a good time to check in periodically on where you are, who you are and where you are going. If you started in December or January, working on your goals, take some time now, in the spring, to see if the fruits of your labor are starting to spring up? Are you who you wanted to be at this time of the year? Are you heading in the right direction to the destination you want to achieve? I've been working on one of my goals, to become a professional speaker. I have achieved that goal, in that I have presented and been paid to do a speech. I was honored to present at the International Facility Management Association, San Francisco Chapter's Annual Kickoff Meeting. International Facility Management Association San Francisco Annual Kickoff Meeting I presented my Surfing to Success in 2017 keynote address before a large crowd in January. It was a great time with a fantastic group of facility management professionals. I was thrilled to be able to share my program about how to achieve success by using your passion for what you do, or want to do, to propel you to success and going out each day and catching your next big wave and being successful in the years to come. I am continuing to build my speaking business and will graduate from the National Speakers Association of Northern California Speakers Academy in May. I joined the National Speakers Association as well and am continuing to learn more about the speaking business and marketing to grow my speaking business. Spring has sprung as they say, and I am looking at where I am now, who I am and where I want to go. How about you? Are you where you want to be? Are you who you are? Are you heading in the direction you need to go? If you are, share what successes you have had this spring. Go to the Comments and tell the Goal Getters what you are doing and the success you have this spring. Where are you going the rest of the year? We want to hear from you. Post in the Comments Below If not, don't worry. Start now, it's spring. It's time for new growth. I am happy to help you with your planning of and the execution of your goals. Conformity is the Jailer of Freedom and the Enemy of Growth. ~~ President John F. Kennedy In honor of Presidents Day this week, I am going to talk about Presidential Quotes. Great quotes from great Presidents of the United States. I'll start with President John F. Kennedy. President Kennedy as assassinated when I was 5 years old. We lived in Connecticut then. I vaguely remember going down to the railroad station and watching the train go by with his casket. We all like conformity. Today we talk about stepping out of our comfort zone. The knowledge that conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth is not knew. JFK believed we needed to step out of our comfort zones. He took several when he was President. We went to the the moon, he changed politics and he took other risks. As a leader, we have to take a few risks to grow. If we don't we won't change. Anytime you take risks you will change. Without change there is no growth. Don't let conformity keep you lock in your current world. It is like a jailer. If you don't take risks because what you are doing is comfortable, easy, status quo, you will not be happy later in life. Doing what we want is freedom. Freedom to choose, freedom of thought. I'd love to see you step up and break the chains of conformity and be the person you want to be. Be Free, Take Risks! How are your goals coming this year? Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.   Quote by President Calvin Coolidge   Hi Goal Getters, I've done a couple of my last speeches at my Toastmasters clubs about Persistence. I was backup speaker at Cable Car Toastmasters one morning and our Grammarian, Mike Kress, selected the word Persistence for our Word of the Day. That triggered my mind about the a quote I had heard years ago. The quote and the thought behind it has stayed with me since I first heard it when I was a kid. No, I didn't hear it directly from Calvin Coolidge. I have a few years on me but not that many. Mikes word choice and events going on in my own life prompted me to write the speech about my youngest daughter, Courtney. Courtney was about to graduate from College. Within the next several weeks she will earn her degree that she started in 2007. That's 9 years ago. Today, I am recording from Manhattan, Kansas where I watched Courtney walk across the stage and receive her diploma and mover her tassel from the right to the left. She is now a college graduate with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science. Courtney had persistence. She started in 2007 at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. In 2010, she was convinced by her then partner to transfer to K-State. She liked the school and thought it would be a good idea. The cost was less expensive as an out of state student the the tuition at Berry College in our own state. However, after moving to Kansas things took a turn for the worse and she had to move back to Georgia. I had relocated to California and Courtney was on her own in Georgia. She worked and eventually was able to get back into K-State online. Over the next 5 years, she continued to work full-time and go to school online. This week, she graduated. It took her 9 years to complete her degree, but with her persistence and determination she was able to accomplish her dream and earn her degree in Animal Science. This determination and desire are what prompted me to do speeches about Persistence and Determination. I want you to know that if you have persistence and if you know your Why you can overcome your obstacles and walls that are built in front of you. You can succeed. Your goal may have been to do it in 4 years, or 5 but it doesn't matter how long it takes you. If you believe in the dream, if you believe in yourself, you can triumph. I was talking to the server at dinner the night before graduation and she was undergoing a similar hardship. She had moved to Manhattan to attend K-State and had encounters some obstacles and had to drop of school. She was attending Manhattan Technical College currently but wanted to go back to K-State to earn her degree in in Juvenile Oncology. She said my daughter's story of persistence had just inspired her to continue her studies and go on to achieve her dream. Go for your goals and dreams. Don't let adversity or obstacles stop you. It may slow you down, it may deter you for a time, but if you keep you Why in your mind, if you persist with a dogged determination, you will succeed. Go Out Today and Be Determined. Persist Past the Pain! Persistence and Determination Alone are Omnipotent! Thank you for joining us. I want to let you know that I am offering one on one coaching sessions to help you get the goals you set. Are you getting ready to set your goals for the new year? Have you had problems achieving your goals the last few years. We all need to have help sometimes. Even professional golfers hire swing, short game or other skills coaches. S2-E52 - 3 Ways to Turn New Year's Resolutions into New Year's Realizations

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2016 8:07

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.   ~~ Abraham Lincoln     Turn New Year's Resolutions into New Year's Realizations   It's the end of the year and like millions of people in the United States and other countries and possibly even on other planets you are probably thinking about making your usual New Year's Resolutions. Well, don't make your usual New Year's Resolutions because they don't work. I talked about this last year and I am going to mention it again this year. Why, because you keep making New Year's Resolutions when they don't work. But they could. I'm going to tell you 3 ways to turn your New Year's Resolutions into New Year's Realizations. Be Specific Don't just make generic, broad, vague resolutions. I will lose weight this year. I will get a new job this year. I will improve my grades this year. I will be make more money this year. Your resolutions should be more specific. You should tell yourself and the universe exactly what you want to accomplish this year. Make it specific: I will lose 25 pounds by September 1st of this year by eating healthier and being more active. I will take a more active role at work so that I can provide more value and I will apply for a more senior position. I will work on my top prospect list each day and double my presentations by August 1st so I can make more sales and improve my income this year. They key is to be as specific as possible so your mind know what it has to do to produce the results you want to achieve. Write your resolutions down. Most people when they set their New Year's Resolutions simply say they will do them. In their mind they think about what they want to do. The use of visualization is a powerful tool. However, if all you do is say that you want to do something, it doesn't really register in the mind. You want to put it down on paper. Put the paper where you can see it everyday and then use the mental act of visualization as you read it to picture yourself achieving that resolution. Seeing the words will register in your subconscious mind more and as you visualize yourself achieving it your mind will start believing it. Draft an Action Plan. After you've written down the specific resolution you intend to achieve, you must draft a step by step plan to achieve it. This is the step that most people forget to do. They may write down a specific resolution but they fail to figure out what it will take to achieve it. It's like we expect Santa Claus to bring it down the chimney at the end of the year and Poof, we achieved our New Year's Resolutions. But as we know Santa won't come and bring you your resolution. It's not magic. It takes action. Create an action plan. I guarantee, if you do these 3 steps for each New Year's Resolution, you will turn more of them into New Year's Realizations. I'm looking forward to a fantastic new year. I have had a great year this year. Thanks to you. Thank you for sticking with us here at Goal Getting Podcast. This is one of my passions and my desire is to inspire. I set my goal for the next part of my life to inspire one person every day. #Inspire1 is my hashtag for this year. Can you do your best to inspire one person every day? Let me know how it goes. Tweet me at @GoalsPodcast with the Hashtag #Inspire1 when you have done something that inspired someone. Leave a comment telling us what you want to inspire others to do. Let us know how your doing. Go out and make New Year's Realizations not Resolutions next year.

S2-E51 - Are You A Procrastinator? Stop the Fears That Cause It

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2016 8:37

"If you want to make an easy job seem might hard, just keep putting it off." ~ Olin Miller       Are you a procrastinator? I saw this quote today on an article on Huffington Post by Romi Grossberg. I've put a link to her article in the show notes. As a contributor on Huffington Post, I like to follow and read great writers on there. If you have been listening to the show lately you know that I have been focusing on procrastination the last few episodes. Why, you ask? Well, a couple of reasons. I have a coaching client that has been dealing with it in his life and I want him to know that it is something that many people encounter and it can be overcome. I have been dealing with it over the last few months. Yes, me. If you've listened to the show you know that I had stopped posting episodes for a while. I went from posting the Quote of the Day 6 days a week to 3 shows, then to one, then to zero for a few months. Procrastination is most frequently, in my experience and studies, the result of dealing with Fears. I've talked about the different fears that people face. One of my favorite books by Napoleon Hill is Outwitting the Devil. This book is about the six fears the Devil uses to keep people from achieving their dreams. 6 Fears Cause Procrastination Fear of Criticism Fear of Ill Health Fear of Loss of Love Fear of Old Age Fear of Death Fear of Poverty Have you been suffering from any of these? In his book, Hill talks about the Devil saying his favorite of these is the Fear of Poverty. This is especially useful in his fight against those with entrepreneurial spirit. The person that wants to better their life, to try something new, to get out of their comfort zone is often afflicted with this fear, whether they realize it our not. This is the one that has hit me on a couple specific occasions. It struck hard in 2008-2010 when I was in the lending industry as a Loan Officer and the market crashed. I was married at the time and had a daughter in college. The thought of not being able to provide for them weighed heavily on me. We lost pretty much everything at that time. I have been going through the same fear lately. I have specific legal financial commitments now and it has impacted my thought processes. The fear of not being able to meet those commitments has affected me mentally. The key to overcoming this fear, and any fear, is to recognize it for what it is, a fear. When you put a name to that fear and know that it isn't you, but the fear, you can then overcome it. When you recognize this as fear, the key is to take action. If you've created an action plan to achieve your goals, start taking action, now. By taking action, your fear will dissipate. The more action you take each day, the easier it will be to achieve your goals. The farther behind you get in your goal, the harder it seems to become. The more you put off, it seems so much more difficult to get to where you want to be. Romi's article on Huffington Post talks about the 5 Minute Rule. I like this rule. Ask yourself if you have 5 minutes. Trust me, you do. Tell yourself and then do something on your action plan for 5 minutes. If you are writing a book, sit down and write for 5 minutes. If you are getting in better shape, do sit ups for 5 minutes. If your goal is to spend more time on self improvement, turn off that TV for 5 minutes and read a chapter out of that book for 5 minutes. Take Action! Do what you need to do to move forward in your goal.  Don't be a procrastinator. Start small and get back into the rhythm of the plan. That's what I have been doing. I started writing, recording and publishing episodes again. You can take action and achieve your goals. Don't put it off. Start with 5 minutes. It will build up. Go Out Today and Take the Action to Move Forward - 5 minutes at a time if you have to. Just Start Now! Romi Grossberg - Are You A Procrastinator article on Huffington Post. “Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. Inaction is not only the result, but the cause, of fear. Perhaps the action you take will be successful; perhaps different action or adjustments will have to follow. But any action is better than no action at all.” — Norman Vincent Peale   Has fear taken your confidence from you? Are you afraid to try to achieve your goals? Action is the great restorer and builder of confidence. This is the first quote I think I've shared by Norman Vincent Peale. He is one of my favorite authors and I originally read "The Power of Positive Thinking" when I was in my teens and firmly embraced the belief in Positive Thinking. I remember talking to the pastor of my church after a service one Sunday morning. I told him how I had read Dr. Peale's book and was now a firm believer in the power of positive thinking. He looked at me with his sad-eyed look and said, "Tony, that's bad. You need to face reality and not positive."... WHOA! What. I don't remember anything else after that point. That was my last service at that church. I would not be involved in a church with a pastor that had a negative attitude. I didn't believe that God was a negative force. I believe God wants you to be always believe in being positive. But that's not the point of this episode. I am excited about this quote because it's about Action. I am also a firm believer in action. Action, as Dr. Peale says is a builder of confidence and a great restorer. I have seen this in Action in my life. A couple years ago I was having a very bad moment in my life. I had lost a lot of my self confidence. I decided I needed to do something to improve my confidence. I decided to attend a Toastmasters meeting. I used to do training and a lot of presentations. I was used to talking in front of people. You wouldn't be able to tell it from my first Toastmasters meeting. Taking that action, doing something, started to build my confidence back up. I went on to take some marketing courses at UC Berkeley Extension. I made good grades, had fun, learned a lot and found my calling. I took Michael Brito's Social Media Marketing Strategy course and developed a passion for social media. Taking the action to start at Toastmasters rebuilt my confidence. It prompted me to take other actions. Once I found my calling, I took action to start this podcast, write my book, 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement and start working on my my next goal to become a professional speaker specializing in inspiration and goal achievement. Action is a great restorer. Taking action allowed me to build my confidence back to where it was before and beyond. Are you having a moment in your life where things are not going as well as you want it to? Are you not achieving your goals? Do you need to boost your confidence? I know how to help and I want to help you. I want to show you how you can be the best person you want to be. It takes action. You have to be willing to take the first action and that is to get started. Getting started helped me grow and now I want to help you. This is why I started my coaching services. If you want someone to help you take the action you need to move forward in your life, let me know. S2-E49 - Good Things Come To Those That Hustle, Not To Those That Wait.

“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.” – Abraham Lincoln   Hustle. Hustle if you want the best. You've probably heard the old proverb, "The early bird gets the worm." I think this is in the same vain and more specific. The real thought here is that if you aren't early you won't get a worm, but more than likely you'll have to wait around until it rains and grab the old drowned worm off the sidewalk because all of the other fresh, squiggly worms will have already been taken by those birds that get up and go out to look for the worms while they are crawling out of the ground, fresh and lively. I mean, that's how I would like my worms if I ate worms, not the soggy old drowned worm or the dried up worm jerky on the sidewalk. OK, gross worm talk, but Honest Abe was telling the truth here when he said that you can get good things even if you wait, but the better things will come to those who hustle and get out there early. I don't know if Abraham Lincoln actually said this quote. Did they use the word hustle in the 1800's? Was there a "Charlie Hustle" in the Union Army? I am sure we would have heard of some General that was nicknamed General Charles, Charlie Hustle, Smith or something. There was a General Stonewall Jackson who was named because he sad upon his horse like a Stone Wall or something to that effect. Even if Abe Lincoln didn't say this in those exact words, I can believe that he had the thought as part of his mental state. So if you want great things to come to you, get busy doing what you need to do NOW! Don't wait until tomorrow. As they say, Tomorrow never comes. Don't get what is left. S2-E48 - Do You Procrastinate, Delaying Your Success?

“Success is not obtained overnight. It comes in installments; you get a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow until the whole package is given out. The day you procrastinate, you lose that day's success.” ― Israelmore Ayivor     Good day my friend. Today I want to present a quote for one of my good friends and coaching client that is fighting the battle with Procrastination. Do You Procrastinate and Delay Your Success? We all suffer through procrastination at some time in our life. If you don't today just wait until tomorrow. OK, that was a bad attempt at a joke. But, for many if not most people it is a constant struggle. It isn't caused by you. Well, not consciously anyway. It is caused by your subconscious mind. The quote is true. We get bits and pieces of our success. When we procrastinate, we lose that day's helping of success. If you procrastinate, that time cannon be made up. You lose it. Do you want to lose any part of your success? Procrastination Procrastination is a tool of the subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind uses Fears to control our lives. The Fear of Failure, the Fear of Success are two fears that are often manifested by the subconscious as procrastination. Our subconscious mind, if not programmed to understand success as a known it will start using fears to sabotage your own success. The Fears of Success and Failure are both the same but different. Don't you hate it when people use that saying - "the same but different". You can't be the same and different or can you. They are the same in that your subconscious mind doesn't recognize success. It doesn't understand it. It isn't positive or negative, it just is. Depending on how we are raised, how our environment was around us as we were growing up, the subconscious mind will view it differently. Fear of Failure If I was brought up within a successful thought process, than I could have a fear of failure. Our parent or may have shown disfavor when we didn't achieve what was expected of us, what they wanted or thought we should do. Because we didn't meet up to their expectations we were derided or not shown positive responses. Our subconscious mind can cause us to think that if we fail at what we are trying to achieve, then we will once again be derided or shown disfavor. To prevent this from happening, our mind set about not letting us complete the tasks that would lead to this activity. Procrastination is the tool, the way for the mind to prevent this situation from occurring. You can't fail if you don't start. But, You Do! Not starting is a failure to accomplish what you wanted to start. Then the mind starts saying the next time, "What, You have never completed anything before. What makes you think you can do it now? The Impostor Syndrome then start to move into your mental house. Fear of Success Our subconscious mind, when it doesn't recognize success as a known, it will often present in the form of Fear Of Success. You start trying to do something that could make you successful and it your own mind starts freaking out. "Wait, you've never been successful at this kind of thing. You can't make $5000 per week. You've never made more than $2500 a month. How are you going to make that kind of money?" The mind, when it doesn't recognize our actions and thoughts as knowns, it will start to sabotage your success. It will do things to keep you from doing what it does not know. It will make you procrastinate. It doesn't matter if that change is positive, it will not recognize you doing it and then do whatever it can to shut you down; to protect you! It's not being mean. It wants to make sure that you are doing what it recognizes as it's own truth. One of it's biggest tools is PROCRASTINATION. " Hey, you have so much else to do right now. Housework needs to get done right now. You need to go work in the yard. Hey, you haven't seen all of the episodes of Justified. You know you can watch them on Amazon Prime, right. Let's sit down and watch just one episode." Unfortunately, that one episode turns into 3-5 and the next thing you know, 3-5 hours has passed and the time you were going to work on writing your book, recording that podcast episode, whatever you goal is. The tasks you need to do to complete them are replaced with activities that do not accomplish your goals. Wait I spent 3-5 hours researching stuff for what I am trying to do. Really? I heard and believe that 85% of research is Procrastination. If we have to do research on a topic to complete our goals, then make that a timed task that you need to complete. Research is important, but don't use it as an excuse. If you time-box for research, you will recognize that your subconscious mind is trying to sabotage you when that time starts getting wasted on other non-productive tasks. Non-productive in the accomplishment of your goals. Your Subconscious Mind will make you procrastinate to destroy your dreams. But you can change that. You can change the unknowns into knowns while at the same time working to achieve your dreams. You can reprogram your subconscious mind to think of this success as a known. You can change your own mind into recognizing that making $5000 per week or even per day is a known. When it recognizes what it is like putting tens of thousands of dollars in your bank account every week or day, it will then stop sabotaging you. It will then start removing those negative voices and limiting beliefs with positive, success-seeking beliefs. That's what I did after I learned The Mental Bank Method and why I incorporate this technique into the Goal Achievement Success System. This is how I was able to go from working at low paying jobs making minimum wage, to $17K, then $37K, then $75K then to $150K plus - without a college degree. Mental Bank You can learn it and use it to help you Get The Goals You Set. You can listen to these episodes where I explain the Mental Bank Method: Episode 34 - Is This What You Struggle With? Never turn down stage time. ~~ Darren LaCroix   Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Insert Podcast Link Here It's Time to Crown the World Champion of Public Speaking. I've entered the Toastmasters International Speech Contest for the last 3 years, since I started Toastmasters. The International  Speech Contest is held in most Toastmasters clubs around the globe. This is the only speaking contest in Toastmasters that goes past the District level to the international level. Each year, those contestants that have won Club, Area, Division and District move up to the next level - The Semifinals. The semifinals are held each year at the Toastmasters International Convention. This year it is in Washington, DC in the the United States. It is this week. It is scheduled start August 17th. Yes, it is this week, tomorrow, and I am going to be there. This year I entered for the two clubs I belong to. My company club, First Republic Toastmasters is a closed club and only open to members of our company. I also belong to an open club, Cable Car Toastmasters. Cable Car is one of the oldest Toastmasters clubs in San Francisco. I will include a link to our club in the show notes. If you are in the downtown San Francisco area at 7 a.m. on Tuesday mornings and want to wake up with a bang, the bang of the gavel as the club starts at 7 a.m., connect with us and we will great you with open arms. Yes, I said 7 AM. Yes, it's early. Yes, you will have fun and get a jolt of adrenaline to start your day with positivity. I'm Not  A Semifinalist I guess I should go ahead and break the news before we go any further.                   I am not a semifinalist. I did not make it past the Area level this year. I have been to the Division level before, but this year I didn't make the First Republic club, but did win the Cable Car club contest. I won 2nd Place at our Area level contest. Our District 4 winner, Gina Grahame is a Semifinalist and will be competing this week in DC. Our First Republic club officers are attending the International Convention as well as many of our District 4 leaders. We are looking forward to meeting new friends and are looking forward to cheering Gina on as she goes to get her goal of World Champion Speaker. I want to be the a Toastmaster World Champion Speaker. This is one of my goals in my path to become a paid motivational speaker. This episode of Goal Getting Podcast is part of our Back To School Series. I consider myself in school to learn to be a Toastmasters World Champion Speaker. I am learning from some of the best. I watched as Gina ascended from Area through Division, and win the District level awards. This week I will get to watch her compete on the World stage with great Toastmasters. I want to be there. I will be cheering her on and visualizing myself on the stage as well. What am I doing to learn to be a Toastmaster World Champion Speaker? Never turning down stage time, as 2001 World Champion Speaker Darren LaCroix said on the How To Become A World Champion Speaker CD. World Champion Speakers I have had the pleasure and honor of meeting Hall of Fame Speaker, Patricia Fripp at a couple of our San Francisco Toastmasters events. We had the opportunity to host her for a seminar at one of our First Republic Toastmasters club meetings where she shared some educational and inspiring advice. I learned a lot in that visit. Cable Car Toastmasters also sponsored her for an event in June and again she shared valuable advice about speaking and presenting. She is a dynamic lady and a tremendous speaker. The interesting fact is she actually began her Toastmasters journey at Cable Car Toastmasters. I won't say the year, but it was a while ago. At the Cable Car event, she gave away her CD How To Become a World Champion Public Speaker to the attendees. This CD features Patricia Fripp facilitating an entertaining, action-packed, idea-rich National Speakers Association session with two Toastmasters International World Champion Speakers, 2000 Champion Ed Tate and 2001 Champion Darren LaCroix. I am excited to meet these two gentlemen at the Convention this week. Ed Tate is speaking Wednesday night. I had the opportunity to listen to the CD over the Independence Day weekend as I drove my dog, Sophie across country to Atlanta. I had long days of driving and listened to the CD over and over again. I think I listened at least 10 times over the 3 day drive. If you are a Toastmaster or you want to learn speaking skills from two World Champion Speakers, you should pick up a copy. I will have information on how to get a copy at the end of the show notes. I will also have contact information on how to contact Patricia, Ed and Darren. These great speakers present the exact tips that helped them win their competitions. Patricia also offers several points of advice. She, too, is a great speaker and teacher. There is so much information on the CD that I won't go over it today, but I do want to share the tip that stuck with me and has become part of my life at this time. Advice from a World Champion Darren offered the audience the tip that he learned from one of his mentors who advised him, "Never turn down stage time." The funny thing about that quote on the CD is the CD starts with Patricia talking about how she was on a tour in New Zealand with a group of National Speakers Association members. She recognized Ed Tate as being the 2000 World Champion Speaker and asked him to give his speech he presented as his final speech for the 2000 World Champion Speaker contest. Ed, on a full tour bus, going 40 miles an hour through New Zealand stood up, grabbed the tour guides microphone and gave his award winning speech. Ed did not turn down the stage time! Ed took the opportunity to tell his story in front of those National Speakers Association members. I am looking forward to hearing his speech on Wednesday night as the keynote speaker at the Opening ceremonies. I am excited. I am going to do my best to interview as many people as I can from all over the world. I am going to try to interview some of the amazing Semifinalists as well as past World Champion Speakers. After all the best way to learn is to listen to them speak. Back To School So, I will be in school all week at the convention learning how I can become a Toastmasters International World Champion Speaker. Is your goal to improve your public speaking skills? Do you have a fear of public speaking?  You should join a Toastmasters club. I have learned so much. I wasn't a rookie speaker. I have been a martial arts instructor, a crime prevention speaker, I've given seminars on many different topics to audiences from 1 to over 400.  However, I didn't know how to speak well. If you give presentations or hold meetings at work you may need to join Toastmasters. If you are a Startup Founder pitching to an investor or a Shark, you need to be able to present your story well. Toastmasters is a place to learn. If you don't have time or the ability to attend a Toastmasters meeting, you might need to find a coach. You can work with one of the World Champion Speakers or me. I offer coaching services as well. Perhaps you are a startup founder and need to get prepared to do a pitch. Let me help you get ready. I've attended a few of the events in San Francisco and will be attending more. I have heard some of the pitches given. You are very intelligent, have a great idea or product and have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it (that sounds like a good name for a band..... ). You should be prepared to tell your story and have the investors be just as excited about it as you are. I can help. Keep listening to the show. I will try to post some interviews and posts from the Toastmasters International Convention. Contact Cable Car Toastmasters if you are in San Francisco FiDi on Tuesday mornings. We meet from 7:00 am - 8:00 am.   Contact these great speakers Patricia Fripp - PFripp@Fripp.com | (415) 752-6556  | www. Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Insert Podcast Link Here It's back to school time and whether you are sending your kids back to school or you are going back to school, Dr. Seuss always has great wisdom. Dr. Seuss may be thought of as a children's book author, he is really a life author for everyone. If you have kids you are sending back to school, you should tell this quote every morning when they leave the house. You should post this quote on their mirror in their bathroom if they have one. It's important for our kids to start early believing they can achieve their goals. This quote by Dr. Seuss tells us that we are off to great places and we can be great. "There are mountains to climb and summits to reach. These are the lessons to our kids we should teach. Get up early, don't dilly or dally, Go get your goals if you are a Tom or a Sally" OK, it's not Dr. Seuss, but I gave it a shot. If you are going to school yourself, whether you are young, in high school, or going to college. You will need to set goals. Determine what you want to do, what grades you want to receive. Once you know that, you can work with the teacher to learn what it will take to achieve the grade you want. Most likely you will have specific tasks for each teacher or professor. Learn what is require and write down what they are and when they are due. That will be the first big step. If you know what you have to do and when you have to complete them, you can then start scheduling your days to work on each task. I like to work on the toughest ones first. If I can knock the most difficult items first, then I should have time to breeze through the easy assignments.  How about you?  How have you been working on your assignments? Do you find it hard to plan working on your tasks. Maybe you need some help. You can pick up my Goal Achievement Success System Action Worksheet and use it to outline your daily goals. The measurement worksheet will allow you to track the tasks each day that must be accomplished. When you complete those tasks. I want to help you do great in school. Mom's and Dad's work with your kids or let them work with you if you are the one going to school. That's right. You may need some help from the kids if you are going back to school these days. Even Tiger Woods has someone he works with on his swing. If you need help, let me know. We can schedule a 20 minute Clarity Call to talk about where you are and what you are working on. We'll talk and give you some actionable tips to get you started. We'll put a little GASS in your goals and get your engines going. S2-E45 - Are You A Visionary or Just a Dreamer?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2016 7:09

In life, many thoughts are born in the course of a moment, an hour, a day. Some are dreams, some visions. Often, we are unable to distinguish between them. To some, they are the same; however, not all dreams are visions. Much energy is lost in fanciful dreams that never bear fruit. But visions are messages from the Great Spirit, each for a different purpose in life. Consequently, one person's vision may not be that of another. To have a vision, one must be prepared to receive it, and when it comes, to accept it. Thus when these inner urges become reality, only then can visions be fulfilled. The spiritual side of life knows everyone's heart and who to trust. How could a vision ever be given to someone to harbor if that person could not be trusted to carry it out. The message is simple: commitment precedes vision.  ~~ High Eagle     Dreams vs. Visions What's the difference?  When is a dream just a dream?  High Eagle says that we often don't know the difference between a dream and a vision. Many of us feel they are the same. But are they?  What makes one different from the other? Are all dreams visions? Why not? What do you think? What High Eagle goes on to say is that Visions are more than mere dreams. Visions come from the Great Spirit. They are messages that are different for each person because they are for different purposes in life.  These are your life's purpose. This is what I believe High Eagle is talking about. What is your purpose in life? I think the second part of this quote is the the key to understanding what High Eagle says. To have a vision, one must be prepared to receive it, and when it comes, to accept it. As I was growing up, I had a dream. I wanted to be a teacher, to share my knowledge and skills with others. At the time I wasn't ready to receive that vision of where I needed to be. I wasn't ready to accept it. I thought of other things. I wanted to make more money than what I thought teachers made at the time. I wanted to experience other thrills in life. I wanted to be somebody important. I wanted to be successful. What happens to a lot of us as we get older, we start wondering if we made an impact with our life. Were we able to be significant to others, our fellow man? Did we live a life of significance and purpose. Sometimes it isn't until we reach this point in our lives that we start thinking about that higher calling, that purpose. What is our calling? What is our purpose? One of my favorite quotes is by Mark Twain. It hangs on my wall. The two biggest days in our life are the day we are born and the day we find out why. [bctt tweet="The two biggest days in our life are the day we are born and the day we find out why. ~~ Mark Twain" username="GoalsPodcast"] The day we find out our why, our purpose, is one of the most important days because when that happens we learn how to be significant. We are now ready to receive the vision, we are ready to accept it. Learning our purpose, our calling will turn those urges we have had into reality and we will then be able to receive and fulfill the real visions, the goals we need to achieve that purpose. Receive your vision We have to be ready to receive it and accept it and then we will have the commitment needed to be able to achieve those visions and make them reality.  This get's back to one of the key motivators for Successful Goal Achievement - Knowing Your Why! When you know your why, you will be able to keep the commitment to your visions, your goals. When you work toward your purpose, what you are meant to be, to do, then you will be able to turn your visions into reality. Taking the actions necessary will turn those dreams into visions. Are you working on visions or dreams? I think this is why many of us have not been able to achieve our dreams. A dream has no action, no commitment.  A vision when realized as a part of your purpose, your calling will be driven by your commitment. Commitment brings action.  Action leads to fulfillment and achievement. Are you ready to receive your vision? Are you ready to accept it? How could a vision ever be given to someone to harbor if that person could not be trusted to carry it out. Do you know what your purpose is?  Do you need help to understand what you want to be and how to achieve it? Some times we all need a little help. The best way to get the help needed to understand is to look outside of ourselves and the best way to do that is with someone else's eyes. Can I help you? We often need a coach to help us bring new eyes, new thoughts, new perspective on what we are doing, or not. I use a coach to help me with the visions I have and what I need to do to make those visions a reality. I decided I needed to follow my purpose, my calling to teach, inspire and motivate people to achieve their goals. S2-E44.2 Are Your SMART Goals Making You Feel Dumb

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2016 6:40

Albert Einstein was smart. But you are too. Most of us are smart, but we don't have the fortitude to stay with our problems until we solve them. The same is true for our goals in most cases. Most of use have heard of SMART Goals and follow this methodology as the script when we create and write our goals. Do you set SMART Goals only to feel dumb when you don't achieve them?  Don't feel dumb, it's not that you aren't SMART, it's that SMART Goals don't go far enough. What are SMART Goals?  The methodology of SMART Goals was developed for setting business or management goals. SMART Goals are Specific Measurable Achievable (or Assignable) Realistic (or Relevant) Time-bound There are several interpretations for each of the letters, but the two most ambiguous are A and R. If A = Achievable  and R = Realistic, isn't that saying the same thing? If my goal is achievable, it must be realistic, right? If it isn't realistic, it most likely wouldn't be achievable. If we are thinking in a business or management mindset, a goal should be assignable. In other words, someone must be able to be assigned to complete it. There must, therefore, be certain tasks that someone must complete for the goal to be achieved. I think it would be smarter to make the A = Actionable, thereby making someone Accountable for completing the action. So maybe Accountable should be the A. Well, Realistic shouldn't be used for R if Achievable is the A. But if A is Actionable, Assignable or even Accountable, then R should be Realistic. Why? Your goals should be Achievable, wait, I mean Realistic. Well since they both are the same thing they should be either or both; Realistically Achievable. So, are you feeling dumb already. Don't! Even if you understand what SMART should stand for, it still isn't enough and you probably still feel dumb. You set SMART Goals. You followed SMART to the T. Your goals were set correctly by the SMART standards. But, you still aren't achieving your goals. You can't seem to get the goals your set. Why not? If my goals are SMART, then I must be dumb. You are not dumb. You just don't know. What you don't know are there are really 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement. The 9 Steps include elements of SMART Goals but they also contain the essences of SMARTER goals, too.  The 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement will make your goal setting successful. I wrote my eBook, 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement and you can find it on Amazon here. What are the 9 Steps that will make you feel smart and successful? Successful Goal Setting Write it Down - Clearly Defined (specific) / Written Goals Be Realistic - Realistically Achievable Goals Set A Deadline - Time-Bound Goals Set An Action Plan - Actionable Goals Measure It / Track it - Measurable Goals Define Your Why - Relevant, Meaningful Goals Visualize It - Believable Goals Make a Commitment - Accountable Goals Reward Yourself - Motivational Goals If you want to learn how you can put these 9 steps into effect in your life with the Goal Achievement Success System, check out my Coaching Packages here. “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~~ Muhammad Ali       R.I.P. Muhammad Ali Muhammad Ali, originally named Cassius Clay, was undoubtedly The Greatest boxer of all time. If you don't believe it, just ask him. I remember as a little boy watching Ali fight. I remember listening to him talk and bicker with Howard Cosell, the sportscaster and journalist and a self-labeled "arrogant, pompous, obnoxious, vain, cruel, verbose, showoff." They made boxing fun to watch. The one thing I learned from Ali was to be yourself, be different, be what you want to be. Ali was a heavyweight in the boxing ring and in life. He fought many boxers and was the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World. He not only fought boxers in the ring, he fought the U.S. establishment, racism and stereotype to become one of the most respected sports figures of the century.  He was crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated. Regardless of your opionion of his brash and controversial style, you will always remember Muhammad Ali. You will be inspired when you read about him and hear him speak. His quotes are legendary, honest and insightful. His quote above is remarkable in the amount of wisdom he shared. As Goalcast said in their blog post - Top 10 Quotes from Muhammad Ali, "I leave you with a bonus quote that should encourage you to be ambitious and think big. Its is longer, but it’s so amazing, almost every part can be quoted". Check out the Top 10 Quotes on their blog. They are all inspirational. I don’t run away from a challenge because I am afraid. Instead, I run towards it because the only way to escape fear is to trample it beneath your foot. ~~ Nadia Comaneci Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Insert Podcast Link Here I don’t run away from a challenge because I am afraid. Instead, I run towards it because the only way to esape fear is to trample it beneath your foot.  When I was growing up, I had the biggest crush on Nadia Comaneci. Nadia was the Romanian Gymnast in the 1976 Olympics that stunned the world with her uneven parallel bar performance. She was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10. Well, I was about 18 at the time and I just thought she was cute! I was amazed at what she could do. She was amazing, and she was cute. She, like many top tier athletes don't run from challenges. They embrace the challenges and as Nadia said, they run toward them. That is what makes them exceptional athletes. When most of us would give up, would whine and complain, they get out and try to find the way to win. How do you handle your challenges?  What do you do to overcome the obstacles and struggles you have to go through?  Do you give up? Do you stop trying to achieve your goals? Are you a winner or a whiner? I remember when I started my martial arts training in Ninjutsu, we had a T-Shirt you could get that said, "There is no H in Winning!" Don't whine about the circumstances. Don't complain about what you can't change.  Find what you can do and start doing it. If you have a goal that you want to achieve. Something that you want to be or do, figure out what it is that you are going to have to do to achieve the goal. That's exactly what I mean when I say do. Achieving your goal requires action. It requires you to do something. My goal this year is to get to 185 pounds. I have certain tasks that I must do to achieve that goal. I can't just sit around watching TV, surfing the web, eating crappy foods.  I have to take the action steps needed to burn the calories or eliminate the intake of calories to be able to lose the weight. I have to be smart about it and eat the right foods. That doesn't mean just lettuce and veggies. There are proteins and fats I have to eat. There are certain foods that I should avoid eating. There are tasks that I must do to burn calories. We could call it exercise, but that sounds like work. Find something that requires movement that you love to do. If you like to walk, walk. If you like to dance, dance. If you like to play softball, football, soccer, tennis, then go out as often as you can and play. Do you remember being a kid and your friends came over and asked if you wanted to come out and play. I used to run out of the house, down the street go hang out in the woods, climb trees, ride bikes, for miles. This wasn't exercise. This was play. This was fun. Go find something you find fun and active and do it. If you have a goal, and you have struggles or challenges, run toward them. Fix them, fight them, beat them. Do what it takes to overcome those obstacles, those challenges; just don't run from them. Face the fears, fight the urge to quit and keep moving forward. Never allow waiting to become a habit. Live your dreams and take risks. Life is happening now.       Hi my friends. I hope you are having a great day. I love the quote above. I believe in taking risks, trying to be better than I am today. Believing in my dreams and working to achieve my goals. I know you are like that too, or at least want to be. Some times you have to step outside of your comfort zone. You have to take a look at what you want to do and take a leap of faith that you can achieve that dream. That goal. Yes, it will be scary, but you can't keep waiting around for the perfect time. Back in 2003 I wanted to go into sales as a Loan Officer. The market was the best it had ever been. Ever. More people were buying homes. Mortgage lenders were making a lot of money as well as everyone in the real estate, building and finance industries. I had been a consultant before I accepted my current role in as a CIO. I loved doing sales presentations as a consultant. I loved meeting the people, going to trade shows and networking. I loved sales. I wanted to get back into it. With the mortgage market booming, I knew I could do well and wanted to step out. It was a big risk. Going from a 6 figure salary and bonus to 100% commission was scary. I had a daughter in college and one getting ready to in a couple more years. I wanted to make that jump.  I was nervous.  When the President of the company said they wanted to take the company paperless to save money and be more efficient, he hit one of my other passions. I always believed we could take the mortgage industry paperless. So I accepted the role as the head of this new project and decided to wait on my goal to go back into sales. We worked tirelessly to implement the new system. We worked for the next couple years through struggles in that area and finally were ready to implement into our post closing department. Shortly after going live, my position with the company was eliminated. I was now out of a job with the company. They gave me a great severance package. I was excited to start looking for something new. It was now April of 2006. Three years after my initial desire to go into the career I had dreamed of. I spoke to the head of the sales team at the same mortgage company and said I wanted to be a loan officer. I had spoken to them about it in 2003 and explained that after having my position eliminated, I could now pursue the position. The market was still doing well, I had a cushion of money coming in for 6 months. They agreed to pay to send me to Loan Officer training. That was a big expense. It was a big risk, but I was unemployed and had to find a job. It would be easy to sell loans since I knew the industry so well and just had to learn how to sell loans. It would require taking a risk. But I finally took the risk. I started out doing well after I got out of Loan Officer training. Then the market took a bigger nose dive than I did in the 5th grade off the high dive. And it hurt much worse. Not just for me but for thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands more. I took the risk. The market crashed and hurt me and many others.  I had to start looking for work. I reached out to vendors I had worked with for years and the Imaging Vendor I had been working with the last three years agreed to hire me. During salary negotiations, the Mortgage Market went in the tank even more and most of their mortgage customers went out of business. The hiring manager called me to tell me the company wouldn't be able to hire me. They were going into a hiring freeze. So I had to start doing something. I took my money out of my 401K and started a new business. I started a business opening a Coffee News Franchise. Several of my friends were doing well selling advertising for years. But with the mortgage market crashing and the area economy driven by that market, ad sales dwindled and so did my new business. I had to shut it down. Two businesses failed back to back. We lost everything, We had to file bankruptcy. I took a job at a grocery store to pay the bills and eventually went full time to be able to pay for insurance. You have to do what you have to do. I've later found a great job in California making a salary for a great, stable company that takes great care of their teams. Yes, I took a risk and it failed. I crashed. However, I learned a lot from that crash. First, I wasn't the only one. It wasn't because of what I did that caused the failures. The market crashed and destroyed many careers.  It was a tough market. The point of the story us you can keep waiting. If you make waiting a habit you could miss the best opportunities. Had I went ahead in 2003 and become a loan officer, I likely would have done very well and things would possibly have turned out differently. Or they might not have. The point is I wouldn't have known either way if you don't take the risk and get the experience.  People are going to give you grief when you take risks. But don't let waiting around become a habit. Take the risks and live your life. Life IS Happening Now! You can live it, too. Go Out Today and Take Some Risks - Live Your Life Today

Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. ~~ Bruce Lee Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Insert Podcast Link Here   Don't go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself. . . . Who Do You Think You Are? Who are you? What is it to be yourself? About three years ago, I started wondering who I was, or more specifically I was looking for what my calling was. I wasn't happy with my current career choice. I had worked in the field for many years but wasn't feeling it any more. I had actually changed careers from that career about 5 years earlier, but went back into it after the mortgage crash. I had left IT and Enterprise Content Management and went into a sales role as a Loan Officer. I loved it, but the mortgage crash dashed that career.   At the end of that run, I also purchased a Coffee News franchise. I became a publisher of "Good News" and sold advertising to local businesses. I loved it, too.     While doing these two careers I started attending Business Networking International (BNI) and learned how to network.   I joined and worked in the local Chambers of Commerce. I loved it. I loved to network with the local business and community leaders. I loved helping businesses grow and build their business and networks. Unfortunately, the economy that was driven by the real estate and building market in the local areas I worked went down considerably and that business failed as well. I was unable to pay the bills, unable to afford insurance, etc. I found a part-time job working at a local grocery store bakery for a couple years and work my way to a Bakery Manager position. I always strive to be my best and excel. I couldn't just be a bakery clerk. But, this wasn't what I wanted to do forever. I started looking for something with my prior experience and skills that could bring in a good salary. I was offered a position in the field I had left before in Enterprise Content Management in Lending and moved to California. After a couple years I realized I wasn't happy doing this. It paid well. I was well respected among my peers, but I just didn't enjoy it anymore. I wasn't feeling like I was making an impact. I wasn't feeling satisfied or significant. I heard about and then read Jeff Goins' book, The Art Of Work. Jeff said to think about what you were doing when you were the happiest in your life. What were you doing when you loved going to work or what did you do when you weren't at work that made you the happiest? Pick up Jeff's book here: On GoalGettingBook.com / Audible or [amazon template=image&chan=goalgettingpodcast&asin=0718022076] I sat down one day when I went for an early morning walk in the East Bay hills near my house, which I loved to do. I started thinking about when i was happiest. I realized it was when i was when I was doing these things: meeting new people marketing business networking working with and building communities online and offline speaking at events training people motivating others to reach and achieve their goals social media writing I joined a new Toastmasters club our company started so I could improve my public speaking and start meeting new people in the company. I started taking marketing and social media classes at UC Berkeley Extension. I decided I wanted to start working towards a career in marketing, social media, public speaking. I realized that the type of career that would work well for what I wanted to do, what I wanted to be, what would make me happy and satisfied was something in the line of Community Management. I started researching and learning. This was who I was. This is what would make me happy. Really?  How did I know? This has been a long discourse to get to the point of this podcast episode, which is to talk about "Who Do You Think You Are?"  If, as Bruce Lee says, you should "be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself" then shouldn't you know who you really are? How the heck do you do that? I started by doing what Jeff Goins suggested. I did find my dream job as a Community Manager. One of the great benefits of our company is that they value their employees. One of the benefits is they often allow us to take personality tests. Yes, there are personality tests. I've taken a few over the years, but I never really took the results and looked at what they meant. They are developed to give you an idea of the strengths and weaknesses you have based on your personality. YOUR PERSONALITY, not someone else's. As Bruce said, "don't look for a successful personality and duplicate......" There are several of these types of tests: Gallup StrengthsFinder Myers-Briggs DISC 16 Personalities and more. . . . We have been given the opportunity to take a couple of these this year and I have been amazingly surprised how accurate they are. I took the Gallup StrengthsFinder and the 16 Personalities tests. Gallup StrengthsFinder The StrengthsFinder Test cost a few dollars to take, but it is well worth it. There are 34 Themes in this test. We signed up for the Top 5 Themes test that shows your 5 themes that define the majority of your personality. My top 5 are: Strategic Activator Self-Assurance Significance Futuristic These are my most dominant themes of the 34 the test shows. These are very important. The program also puts together an Action Plan for you to maximize these strengths. To help show what this means, here are the top 2 of 5: Strategic The Strategic theme enables you to sort through the clutter and find the best route. It is not a skill that can be taught. It is a distinct way of thinking, a special perspective on the world at large. This perspective allows you to see patterns where others simply see complexity. Mindful of these patterns, you play out alternative scenarios, always asking, “What if this happened? Okay, well what if this happened?” This recurring question helps you see around the next corner. There you can evaluate accurately the potential obstacles. Guided by where you see each path leading, you start to make selections. You discard the paths that lead nowhere. You discard the paths that lead straight into resistance. You discard the paths that lead into a fog of confusion. You cull and make selections until you arrive at the chosen path—your strategy. Armed with your strategy, you strike forward. This is your Strategic theme at work: “What if?” Select. Strike. Activator “When can we start?” This is a recurring question in your life. You are impatient for action. You may concede that analysis has its uses or that debate and discussion can occasionally yield some valuable insights, but deep down you know that only action is real. Only action can make things happen. Only action leads to performance. Once a decision is made, you cannot not act. Others may worry that “there are still some things we don’t know,” but this doesn’t seem to slow you. If the decision has been made to go across town, you know that the fastest way to get there is to go . . 16 Personalties When I took the 16 Personalities test, which is FREE, I find I am an ENFJ - The Protagonist. You can learn what each personality is and the characteristics of each. Like the StrengthsFinders test, I found the 16 Personalities test to be pretty accurate. Here are a couple of points from this test that I feel describe me: ENFJs are genuine, caring people who talk the talk and walk the walk, and nothing makes them happier than leading the charge, uniting and motivating their team with infectious enthusiasm. Charismatic – Charm and popularity are qualities ENFJs have in spades. They instinctively know how to capture an audience, and pick up on mood and motivation in ways that allow them to communicate with reason, emotion, passion, restraint – whatever the situation calls for. Talented imitators, ENFJs are able to shift their tone and manner to reflect the needs of the audience, while still maintaining their own voice. Altruistic – Uniting these qualities is ENFJs' unyielding desire to do good in and for their communities, be it in their own home or the global stage. Warm and selfless, ENFJs genuinely believe that if they can just bring people together, they can do a world of good. Natural Leaders – More than seeking authority themselves, ENFJs often end up in leadership roles at the request of others, cheered on by the many admirers of their strong personality and positive vision. Very interesting, and I have to agree they are fairly accurate as well. Essentially both tests say the same things about my personality. If you look at these traits and characteristics of my personality and the things that made me the happiest when I was doing them, you can see why. It is me. It is who I am.  What's the point of all of this? It's to understand what Bruce Lee is said, AND it is to understand YOU. If you want to be successful at your career, if you want to live a happy, satisfied, fulfilling life, then you need to be you. You need to be yourself, express yourself and have faith in yourself. Find your calling. If you are in your calling, live it with passion. Find these personality strengths and take the action needed to use them for your life. I have a career now doing what I am. I am a Community Manager for the company I work for. I am a Podcaster, helping people set and achieve their goals. I help people take action and Get The Goals They Set. I am the happiest I've been in a long time doing what I love and what I am. Are You?  Take one or many of these tests if you haven't. Be honest when taking them. Find out who you really are and then set your goals to be what you are.  If your goals are not in alignment with who you are, then you will have the hardest time achieving them. I appreciate you listening to the show. I really apologize for the delays in getting back to the show. I am going through some challenges and changes in my life at the moment and I have allowed it to affect my thoughts and my attitude. I am a positive person and do my best to keep myself and other thinking positive and keeping our motivation going so we can achieve our goals. / / I am going to start a series on Positive Thinking Quotes. I think it is important to think positively. To be positive. But don't get me wrong. I don't believe that positive thinking alone will be what it takes to achieve our goals. Reading and quoting positive thoughts won't get you farther. It will help keep us motivated and inspired and help you remember your Why. / / And it's certainly makes us feel better to be positive than to be negative, right? / / The power of positive thinking is powerful. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale wrote the great book, The Power of Positive Thinking. I highly recommend it. I read it so many time when I was young. I remember after the first time I read it, I told my minister I was excited about the idea. I remember standing on the front steps of our church after a Sunday service and him saying, "Tony, thinking positive is a bad thing. You need to be realistic." / / I was amazed with this statement. This was my last Sunday at this church. I couldn't believe that a preacher, a man of God would not believe in the power of positive thinking. God wants us to be positive and to believe in ourselves. I did not believe that this man spoke for God. / / We are going to go through tough times at points in our lives. We are going to experience stress, sadness, and issues. However, as Joel Osteen, another man that speaks for God, says above, these tough times are happening to you but for you. It is a learning experience. What Did You Say You Want?   This is a replay of Season 1 - Episode 2.  Many of the early episodes have been pushed off of iTunes and other platforms because of the amount of episodes I have published. If you have listened to some of my latest episodes, you will have heard that I am working on some Life Event issues and am working on a new platform for the show. As I work through this Life Event, I will be back into full swing with Goal Getting Podcast. Thank you for your patience. I hope you enjoy this replay. The What - Clearly Defined Written Goals In order to accomplish a goal, your mind must first know what you want. The brain is a very literal tool. It wants to, and will, give you exactly what you want. It will give you exactly what you BELIEVE you want. There is a quote attributed to Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich and Outwitting The Devil, What The Mind Can Conceive, it Can Achieve.  However, the actual quote is [bctt tweet="What The Mind Can Conceive, and Believe, It Can Achieve! - Napoleon Hill "]   In order for the mind to believe it has to know, specifically, what you want.  To make that clear, Napoleon Hill stated in Think  And Grow Rich, that you should create not just written goals, but Clearly Defined, Written Goals. In Episode 0, we learned about the 3 Critical Concepts of Successful Goal Setting We talked about the FIRST Concept – that I call – The What - What do you want? As we discussed then, it is important to know What We Want To Achieve. Napoleon Hill – for his book - Think & Grow Rich – Interviewed the most Highly Successful People of his time , people such as (Andrew Carnegie, JP Morgan, etc.). Napoleon Hill wanted to know what they did differently from everyone else that propelled them to Success and great wealth. What did they do that allowed them to achieve what they achieved? From his studies and interviews he found 13 Principles, The ONE COMMON THREAD with all of these successful people was they had – CLEARLY DEFINED, WRITTEN GOALS. Each one wrote their goals down, but they were also were clearly defined. Not just, I want to be rich! I Want to make a lot of money! I Want to be famous! They were clearly defined! Each one knew very clearly where they wanted to go! Speaker and Author - Mark Victor Hansen says that time has proven 2 of the laws/principles to be most important: 1) The Master Mind principle/process and 2) "Know very clearly where you want to go." If you’ve read any books about the current leaders of industry and highly successful people, you will hear the same thing …. They all had CLEARLY DEFINED, WRITTEN GOALS! They all knew clearly where they wanted to go! Scientific Study Proves It - Written Goals Works! In 2007, Dr. Gail Matthews at The Dominican University in Northern California performed a Scientific Study – Why? – she and several other behavior researchers had heard about a Harvard or Yale study from the 50’s or 60’s that stated a certain percentage of Harvard )or Yale alumni had been more successful than others because they had written their goals down. In their research, they found that the study never really happened. The statistics were non-existent – bunk that had been perpetuated by speakers since that time. But it never happened. So they set out to find out “Would you be more likely to achieve your goals if you wrote them down?” Their study included 5 Groups – ranging from Not Writing Goals Down to various levels of Writing them down with accountability or not. The Conclusion of their study was - The positive effect of written goals was supported!  Those who wrote their goals down accomplished significantly more than those who did not write their goals down.   They found that you were 42% more likely to achieve goals if you write them down! Do you want the odds to be with you? Then Follow Step #1 found in 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement - WRITE THEM DOWN! Written goals will give you  a 42% greater likelihood of GETTING the GOALS YOU SET! Here is a link to Dr. Matthews' Goal Study.   What does Clearly Defined, Written Goals mean? Being Specific. Specificity when writing your goals will help the brain understand what you want. [bctt tweet="Clearly defined, written goals should be specific. “Specific is Terrific!” – Tony Woodall"] Write your goals with Specific details as to what you want to achieve - This is Critical. Grab a pen and a notepad and let’s work on some examples of your Clearly Defined, Written Goals. For Example:If you have a Weight Loss Goal: You might write something like this: When I wake up on May 1st of next year, I will step on the scale and be excited to see that I now weigh 185 pounds. I will put on my new 34 inch waist pants and go celebrate! Specific goal of 185 #, On a Specific Date (we will learn more later about deadlines), and I will wear a specific waist size. Or, If you have a Project Goal of some sort, say to remodel your home. You might write something like: I will complete the renovations to my kitchen on March 12th of next year without incurring any additional debt. In this goal, we have specific renovations, the kitchen, a specific date, AND an important part of the goal is that it will be done without incurring any additional debt. This may be a very important part of the goal if you need to stay on a budget. Goals are similar to Projects. Have you ever heard of Scope Creep? That happens when you have a project that hasn’t been fully defined and agreed upon. Things start getting added onto the project and eventually it starts creeping into more time, money or not getting accomplished at all. Step 1 to Successful Goal Achievement is Write It Down! Remember, when you start to set your goals. You must write them down, and be specific.   My eBook, 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement is now available.  Learn about the other steps you should follow for successful goal achievement. S2-E38 - Leadership is not genetic. Leaders are made not born

The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born - that there is a genetic factor to leadership. This myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That's nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.~ Warren G. Bennis   Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Insert Podcast Link Here    Thank you, Mr. Bennis. Warren G. Bennis was a scholar and renowned author on leadership. Perhaps one of the the founders and forerunners of the modern leadership movement, Warren Bennis has debunked the myth that leaders are born. That cannot be farther from the truth. As, Mr. Bennis said, the thought that people are born with leadership skills, that it's part of genetics is total nonsense, a myth. Leaders are made. Leaders learn skills as leadership itself is a skill. Many people with upbringings that are less than stellar, with ancestors that were far from leaders have made great leaders. They learned the skills necessary to lead and then applied those skills. Charisma is not necessarily a genetic trait. Many people learn the science and mechanics to understand life and people and then take that into their mental thought processes and become that person. That leader. This thought, I believe, stems from the male-dominated business environments of the past where they believed that only men were capable of being leaders. Therefore, they had the genetic makeup required to be leaders. Well, we all know this is bunk. Let's face it, there have been many great leaders that have been women. There genetic makeup had nothing to do with it. Don't let this old myth stop you from striving to be a good leader. Learn what makes a good leader. Then strive to be a great leader. Go Out Today and Learn to Be a Great Leader, Then Be A Great Leader Thank you for listening to Goal Getting Podcast. I am going through some transitions in life. Don't waste a minute not being happy. If one window closes, run to the next window - Or break down a door.~ Brooke Shields     A better thought has not been said. Life is too short to be unhappy for a minute. Don't waste your life, your time, on being unhappy. It is up to you to determine your happiness. If you aren't happy in a situation, you can choose to be happy or remove the unhappiness. As Brooke Shields says, if one window closes, run to the next window. Our life has many windows. We just have to be prepared to run to the next and then the next. Don't just stare out the same window if it's a window to unhappiness. The view will likely be better elsewhere. What's more, her further statement is even greater. Just break down a door. When you are unhappy, it is sometimes better to knock down the door to get out of one room or to get into the next room.  Don't be afraid to be assertive. If the door won't won't open for you, knock it down. Thank you for listening to Goal Getting Podcast. I am going through some transitions in life. Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death.~Anais Nin     The thought that life is becoming is true. It never is, it is always becoming. We are ever changing. We go through stages and states in life. We do things and try things, we experience life. Passion drives us in many new areas and many new experiences. When we get to the point where we find a state and decide to stay in that state, that stage, we are in, as Anais Nin says, a kind of death. My friend Bud, says, Without change there is is no growth. When we don't grow, we become stagnant. We essentially die. Only dead things don't grow. When people lose their passion for new experiences, new states, new stages their mind starts to atrophy. Do you know people like this. Instead of working to move to the next state, they stay dormant. I know people like that. They are stuck in the past. They don't see the new experiences as a form of growth. They don't see the new experiences as a positive. They want to be what they are or more so what they were at one time. This is not healthy. Life moves on. Life grows. Experiences change and new friends and feelings form. We all must seek to experience new changes, to keep becoming. If not, we die. If not physically certainly mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Go Out Today and Keep Becoming! Enjoy the States You Experience   I get a lot of my quotes from great books that I read. Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.”~Rumi   This is a simple quote. When you are in love or doing what you love, life is beautiful. When we love something, it is beautiful. Whether we love a man, a woman, art, a flower, an pet, a place, whatever we love, it is beautiful. Rumi, the 13th century Persian poet often spoke about love. Here he is talking about how the beauty of what we love should be what we do. This 13th century idea is about what we call Passion today. When we are passionate about things, we see the great beauty in them. Rumi's wisdom here is that we should be doing what we love. When we are doing what we love, life is beautiful. Life is happy. I keep mentioning the sign I saw on Facebook, but it resonated so deeply with me that I keep thinking about it. If you think about something day in and day out, every waking moment - and it makes you happy. You should be doing that. I believe Rumi would think the same. When you think about something day in and day out, every waking minute, you are in love with it. It is beautiful to you. It is your mind's focus. If it makes you happy, you should be doing that. Love what you do. If it is a career, love what you do. I heard someone say recently, No job pays enough to suck! Same thing simplified. Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. I'm just full of these one liner quotes in this episode about passion in your work. I am big on passion these days. I believe we have to have passion for what we do, who we are with and in living a passionate life. Live life to it's fullest. It speaks to us… guides us… passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have?” Man, I love this quote about passion. I am going to take it, print it and put it on my wall. Josh Whedon is a great director and screenwriter. He is a quote master as well when it comes to passion. In his line of work, it takes passion to succeed. It takes passion to create and bring a movie to market. I think Josh is correct. We all have Passion. It is within us all as we grow. Children have passion. Too often it is stifled as we grow. But at some time, for most of us it will stir. It will open it's jaws and howl as Josh says. Passion when we pay attention to it speaks to us, it does guide us, it does rule us all, and we must obey it when it rises within us.  What choice do we have? If we don't obey it will drive us crazy, it will fill us with stress and longing. You must obey when passion comes to call. You must use that passion to take on your challenges each day. Take passion and use it for yourself and for others. You are the champion of passion if we obey. Go Out Today and Choose To Use It! Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.~Howard Thurman     Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. - What the world needs is more people with passion that act on that passion and come alive to succeed. Howard Thurman has probably heard the same thing I have heard. Ask yourself what the world needs and you will be successful. He doesn't necessarily agree with this. Why? Because if you just try to do what others want, you will eventually not be willing to do it any longer. As soon as the joy runs out, as soon as you stop believing that the world is right about what they want or as soon as you stop believing in the same thing, you will quit. You will not have the passion it takes to keep that goal alive. What Thurman is saying is to ask yourself what makes you come alive. What is your passion. Passion makes us come alive. It makes us get excited about things. When you find your passion, what it is that makes you come alive, then go and do that. It reminds me of a sign I saw recently on Facebook - If you think about something day in and day out, with every waking moment, and it makes you happy, You should be doing that! That's the same thought that Thurman has here. Don't worry about what everyone else wants or needs. Think about what makes you come alive! What makes you happy. Then go out and do that. There is no greatness without a passion to be great, whether it’s the aspiration of an athlete or an artist, a scientist, a parent, or a businessperson.~Anthony Robbins     There is no greatness without a passion to be great! Passion is the driver for human greatness. We've been talking about passion for the last week. I believe that passion is the biggest motivator of mankind. People who become great, who strive for greatness do so because they have a passion for their beliefs. Without passion, there is no intensity, no burning desire to complete or be anything. That's the sad state of the world today. People don't have passion for their own beliefs. Those with passion for their beliefs work to make themselves great, to make their countries great, to make their religions great. Whether that belief is good or bad, passion is what drives the person to do the things they do. They have the burning desire to succeed at what they do. Imagine if we all had that passion for good. If we had the same passion for the good beliefs, what could we do?  If we believe in our own greatness and the ability of our goals to be great, we will set the bar high. We will set ourselves to move toward greatness instead of mediocrity. If you are settling for a life below your possibilities, below your potential, you are playing too small. We all have the potential to live bigger than we think we can. It's our own minds that keeps us from thinking big. I remember reading the book, The Magic of Thinking Big, by Dr. David Schwartz when I was younger. This one book gave me the initial thoughts that I could be whatever I wanted to be. That I could be bigger than I had ever believed. Don't settle for less than you can be. There's no passion in that. Be passionate about life. Live a big passionate life like Nelson Mandela. Go Out Today and Be More Than You Think You Are Capable Of   I get a lot of my quotes from great books that I read. If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose. ~Bishop T.D. Jakes   Purpose! Are you living a life of purpose? Do you know what your purpose is? I've wondered what my purpose in life is supposed to be. I couldn't figure it out. I wasn't fulfilled in my career. I wasn't happy. I didn't feel satisfied. I didn't feel I was making an impact. Why? I wasn't really doing what I was passionate about. I started thinking, after reading Jeff Goins' book, The Art of Work, about what I liked to do. What was I doing when I was the most happy at work.? I've had a lot of careers in my long life. I was happy in some, not in others. What was I doing when I was the happiest?  I realized that I was happiest when I was Training / Teaching people Doing Public Speaking Motivating people Networking in business Those four skills and areas were what I had a passion for. When I was doing them, I was happy. I was having fun, not working. I needed to be doing this to be happy, satisfied and fulfilled. These were what I was passionate about. When I look at Bishop TD Jakes' quote, I see he was right. If you find your passions, it will lead you to your purpose. I believe my purpose in life is to inspire people, to provide inspiration to at least one person per day. If I can do that, I will be successful I will be fulfilled. If you don't know your purpose, what are you passionate about. You should do what I did. Sit down and think about when you were the happiest. What made you excited to wake up in the morning? What kept you awake at night? What made you happy? Like Bishop Jakes says, If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose. Above all, be true to yourself, and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it.~Hardy D. Jackson Heart not in it? You don't really want to be there, do you? You'd rather be somewhere else wouldn't you? I know, I've been there before. When you do things and your heart isn't in it, it makes it very difficult to keep going, doesn't it. You keep building up stress. You keep feeling that churning sensation in your stomach. You keep thinking about it and not good thoughts. Stop it! I like Hardy Jackson's quote as we talk this week about passion. Hardy has the right thought here, my friend. Whether it's your job, your career, a relationship, a sport, WHATEVER, if your heart isn't in it.....Take Yourself Out of It. I had that feeling about 3 years ago about my career. I was not having a feeling of fulfillment. I was at a point where my heart wasn't in it and I wasn't happy. I found my calling, my passion and started working on the action steps I needed to learn what I needed to do to change my career. I did the soul searching and found what I wanted to do with my life that made me happy. That should be the first step. What will make you happy? Where do you want to be in your life? If you aren't there, change it. Start taking action! The key as Hardy Jackson says is you have to be true to yourself. Why do, be or live where you don't want to. Why be with people that bring you down. Why make your life suffer if your heart isn't in it. Put your heart where your passion is. Go Out Today, Be True to Yourself and Put Your Heart Where Your Passion Is!   I get a lot of my quotes from great books that I read. Chase your passion, not your pension.~Denis Waitley     Chase your passion, not your pension. Wow! There is so much wisdom in those 6 words. We often worry so much about the weekly paycheck or saving for social security that we do things we hate for years at a time.  Do you know people that go to work every day and hate what they do?  Do you get the feeling when you are talking with someone that is doing their job and you can tell they would rather be somewhere else? [bctt tweet="Chase Your Passion not Your Pension ~~ Denis Waitley" username="GoalsPodcast"] Are you that way?  Why? Why do you chase the pension or the paycheck? Is that what you really want to be doing? Are you doing what you do because it's all you know how to do? Are you doing it because your parents wanted you to follow in their footsteps? What are your passions? What do you love doing? What do you dream about and think about spending your time doing? I saw a sign the other day that said, "If you think about something, day in and day out, with every waking moment, AND It Makes You Happy, You Should Be Doing That!" That is so true. Like Denis Waitley said, "Chase your passion, not you pension." Quit working at something you hate, just to get paid. If you have something that you love, that makes you happy when you do it and think about it, You should be doing that. How can you turn that passion into a paycheck or a pension. Now, very few people get pensions these days, but that correlates today to passive income. Working today to be able to get paid later without working. What can you do with your passion to make it a paying proposition? What can you do to earn an income and even better a Passive Income from it. If you chase your passion, you will get fulfillment and satisfaction out of it. You will enjoy going to work each day. You will be happy. Take Denis Waitley's advice; "Chase Your Passion, Not Your Pension." Set a goal this week to define your passion. What is it?  How can I do more of it and how can I earn an income from it. Set a goal to start working on the action steps it will take to turn your passion into a paycheck. What is your passion?  Let me know in the comments section. Let me know what would make you happy, fulfilled, satisfied. Let's work together to get you on the right track to Get The Goals You Set. Mirror mirror on the wall, I'll always get up after I fall. And whether I run, walk or I have to crawl, I'll set my goals, and achieve them all.- Carla Terry       My friend, Carla Terry, shared this rhyme on Facebook. It was a good rhyme but also makes a great quote. This is a great positive saying that you, I and everyone should say in the morning when we get out of bed and look in the mirror. It is the last thing we should say after we brush our teeth before bed at night. You should print this saying and tape it to the mirror so you don't forget to do it.  My sister tells me she knew I would be successful at what I did, because she remembers when I was a kid, I taped "I will be rich!" onto the mirror in our bathroom and on my dresser. This quote is a great statement of faith. Faith in your ability to set goals and to do what it takes to achieve them.  Failure will not stop me. I will get up again if I fall. No matter what I have to do - run, walk or crawl - I will set my goals and I will achieve them all. Tell yourself this every day! Tell yourself this morning and night. What holds most people back is not the quality of their ideas but the lack of faith in their ideas.- Russell Simmons     Russell Simmons is a great businessman and entertainer. He meets people with great ideas frequently. This is a common problem for people. Many people have great ideas. Many of these ideas are life changing, or could be. But, because they have a lack of faith in their ideas, people don't act on those ideas. Why do they not have faith in their ideas? Many of these people suffer from various issues like fears, the Imposter Syndrome and limiting beliefs in our subconscious mind. They are intelligent people with dreams and serious ideas, but for some reason, they lack the faith that what they want to do is important. The subconscious mind can work against us. Yes, our own subconscious mind. The programming of our subconscious mind happens when we are young. It can develop limiting beliefs that will prevent us from seeing our own value. It will allow us to see ourselves as inferior and not worthy of the ideas we create. These limiting beliefs will cause us to have no faith in the ideas we present. You can overcome your subconscious mind's limiting beliefs. You can turn this lack of faith into belief and success by following the Goal Achievement Success Systems Mental Bank Method. This systematic approach to reprogramming our subconscious mind will turn out limiting beliefs into positive success oriented beliefs that will give you the faith you need in your ideas to get them created. S2-E23 - 3 Wishes You Should Be Making

Don't wish it were easier, wish you were better. Don't wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Don't wish for less challenges, wish for more wisdom.- Special Forces Association Chapter 60 , Tampa Bay     This quote was shared by a friend of mine in a Special Ops branch of the United Stated Military. Special Ops members don't ever wish for it to be easier. None of the members I know whine or wish things were better. They look at challenges and problems as opportunities to hone their skills, whether they are military skills or civilian skills. If you had a genie that would grant you 3 wishes, these are the three you should wish for: Wish you were better - If you were better at what you were doing, you would be better than most of the people doing it. People that are able to do things better than other people in their field are the most sought after for those skills. They can charge more money than the others. I used this wish to make myself better at skills that I needed to get the goal I set to be a consultant back in my early IT career. I became better than most people at this skill and was able to charge $150 - $250 per hour for those skills.  If it was easier and everyone could do what I did, I wouldn't have been able to charge that type of fee. Don't wish it were easier, wish you were better. Wish for more skills - The skills I became better at that I mentioned above was a limited skill. It was limited by time. It was used on a DOS-based software application or an IBM Midrange computer. OK, some of you may not know what that is, but DOS was a pre-Windows and IOS operating system. Yes, it was a Microsoft operating system and as you can guess, it ran it's life course and those specific skills eventually became useless.  So, what do you do? You learn new skills. There are new problems that arise. These new problems require new skills.  I have been called a Jack of All Trades. That not necessarily a good thing, but there are some careers that now look for generalists. However, I never consider my self just a Jack of All Trades. I like to say that I am a "Jack of All Trades and A Master of Some". I realized at an early age that by becoming the best at, a master at specific skills, would give me an advantage over others. It would also prepare me for the event that an industry, or career path required a pivot, I would be skilled in many areas.  There are many problems out there. Learn more skills. Learn skills that can transfer to many areas.  Don't wish for fewer problems, wish for more skills. Wish for more wisdom - Like a multi-skilled person a wise person that can solve problems and challenges is highly sought after.  Someone that looks for challenges and ways to overcome or solve those challenges are desired in the workforce. In today's environment, bringing wisdom to your space will bring you greater value. Being able to understand the fine nuances of people, technology and processes will propel you in your career, in whatever industry it is.  Gain wisdom by studying the ins and outs of the industry, the problems and challenges in whatever you do. Be able to work out the answers to challenges and you will be in demand. Don't wish for less challenges, wish for more wisdom. When you wish upon a star,  these three wishes will take you far. On A star, in a deep well or a fountain, these 3 wishes will take you up a mountain. Every test in life makes us bitter or better, every problem comes to break us or make us.The choice is ours whether we become Victim or Victor.- Tammy S. Act with more courage. Don't allow fear to turn you away from opportunities. Risk more.Take more chances. Fail more. Laugh more and love more.- Darren Hardy Thanks Darren Hardy for sharing these great thoughts. I'm competing in the Toastmasters International Speech Competition. By the time this episode airs I will have completed the Area contest for the competition. I won the Cable Car Toastmasters club competition and move on to our Area competition. My speech is entitled Passion Has A Place. My speech is about Living a Passionate Life Finding this quote really hit home with me and made me think of these as the 7 Keys to a Passionate Life. 1. Act with more courage. - The important part of this quote is the word Act. Action is what defines passion. Passion without action is just desire. It is just a wish, a thought. Acting on your dreams, your desires, takes courage. What is courage, you ask. You did ask didn't you? I thought you did. Courage is the ability to do what others won't. Being the one to step out into the fight, the fray when it seems like the odds are against you. Act with more courage in life. [bctt tweet="Passion without action is just desire. #passion #opportunity ~ Tony Woodall"] 2. Don't allow fear to turn you away from opportunities. - When opportunities come their way, many people are afraid to take them on. Fear is a killer of opportunity. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of poverty. These all prevent us from taking the opportunities that are presented to us and we lose the chance to be more than we are now. 3. Risk more. - Risk is not just a game. Have you ever played the game Risk? We used to play Risk when I was a kid. OK, I didn't play so much. I watched my friend, Larry play after he beat me and most other kids that we played with. Risk is not a game, but maybe we should treat it like a game. People are often risk adverse. They are afraid of taking risks. But risks are necessary in life if you want to grow. Life is about risks. The more risk you are willing to take in your life, your career, even in love, you get farther than those that refuse to take risks. Don't be someone that settles for mediocre. 4. Take more chances. - We have many chances in life to do many things. We must be willing to take a few more chances to when they come our way. I am going to change this part of the quote to be Make More Chances. What I mean by this is we don't have to hang around and be ready to take chances when they come our way. What we have to do is go out and make our chances. I thought about this on my walk this morning. My dog, Sophie, takes me for a walk on weekend mornings. It's her favorite thing to do. We did 5 miles this morning. I usually stop her at 4 but I was in a walking mood, too, so we went to five. Sophie is a Yorkie, a Yorkshire Terrier weighing in at 5 pounds. That's a lot of walking for people, but in Yorkie steps, its a looooong way. During the walk I was thinking about my job as community manager and other social media jobs and that these jobs were not even in existence 10 years ago. There are so many careers that didn't exist when I was growing up. The same is true for you. I was thinking if you have a passion, something you want and love to do and there isn't a job or career for that, then we should do what we can to create the industry, the job, the position that will fill the passion. Basically, Make More Chances. 5. Fail more. - Failure has always been thought of in a negative light. It's bad to fail. You're a loser if you fail. One thing that is known about most successful people is that they have failed many times before they became successful. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb often talks about how he failed 10,000 times before he created the light bulb the made him a success. When we talk to many start up founders, we hear stories about the failures they endured as they started building their ideas. It's important to fail, and fail fast. Failure isn't negative, failure is educational. You have the opportunity to learn what works and what doesn't. Fail more. 6. Laugh more. - Life is short, enjoy it. Laughter is the best medicine was and probably still is a column that was in Readers Digest magazine when I was growing up, Laughter has been medically proven to be life enhancing. The more laughter we can have in our life, the better we will feel and the healthier we will be. One of my favorite things is to listen to Baby Giggles. Laughing babies are big on the Internet. Everyone loves baby giggles and laughter. They bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. Go out and find something funny and start laughing. 7. Love more. - Love, like laughter is medically proven to be life enhancing. Finding someone with the same passions, the same dreams, beliefs is critical to find a lasting love. When you find that person, you should share the love and love as much as you can. Spend time being with the ones you love, doing the things you love. Live more, Love More. Take these 7 Keys and unlock your life of passion. Go Out Today and Act with more courage. Don't allow fear to turn you away from opportunities.Risk more. Take more chances. Fail more. Laugh more and love more.   I get a lot of my quotes from great books that I read. The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it.- John Ruskin, shared by Jamil Jama     My good friend, Jamil Jama @JamilJama, shared this great quote from John Ruskin. This is a very powerful quote because it defines what our ultimate reward should be for the work we do to achieve the goals. The result of what we strive for really isn't for the goal itself but for what it makes us. When we achieve our goals, we get the object of that goal, but the greater reward is what we become from achieving that goal. When you get the goals we set, we get the feelings of satisfaction, fulfillment and accomplishment. We gain higher levels of confidence. We build a stronger character. The greatest benefit and reward is the belief that we can achieve any goal that we set. We realize that we can be who or what we set out to be. We are powerful and important. We have become a success. We have become a greater person. We have become a Goal Getter! When we work hard and complete the tasks we set for ourselves, we Become what we want to be. Stop worrying about how it's going to happen and start believing that it will.Ron Broussard - Stretchyourself.org   Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Insert Podcast Link Here My good friend from Atlanta, Ron Broussard, is a great motivator and says to start believing what you want to happen will happen. The founder of Stretchyourself.org , Ron leads a lot of people to achieve their goals. Ron is positive and exciting to be around. He shares a lot of great quotes and this is one that really resonates with me. I like this quote because we often worry too much about whether our goals will happen. We spend our valuable time struggling to try to figure out if what we want to happen will. We need to stop worrying and just start believing that it will. If we are doing the action steps we set up in our action plan and we follow our maintenance worksheet to ensure we will get them, then we just need to start believing that what we are doing will result in them being achieved. Worrying wastes energy. Working the action plan takes the energy and directs it towards the successful achievement of our goals. When we focus that energy into the goals, we can do nothing but start believing that we are going to get the goals we set. You can only control two things in life. Your Attitude and Your Actions.- Darren Hardy       Thank you Darren for sharing this truth. Your attitude and your actions are all you can control and as we are striving to achieve our #WorkOnWellness goal, we have to accept this and learn it, embed it in our mind, in our hearts. When we start getting frustrated and feeling like we don't want to go to the gym, or eat properly, we need to remember that you can control your attitude and your actions. You can control these two things. Yes, you can control that feeling of negativity, those feelings of desire for the donut.  We can also control our actions. We can make the decision to go to the gym, to work out that extra ten, fifteen minutes. We can change the habit of looking for sweets and treats when we are depressed or stressed. We can do the things we need to do when we need to do them. We have that choice. Some days it harder than others to get up early and hit the gym. I know. I have been trying to get up early and go to the gym. There are days I decide not to go. It's not anyone's choice but mine when I don't go. I can control my attitude and my actions. The good or bad are my choice. What choices are we going to make? If it's difficult to make the right choice, we need to turn to our Why. Remember Why you are striving to achieve this goal. Knowing the reason why we do what we do, will help remind us why we started this journey to begin with. It is great inspiration for those of us trying to lose weight. Ooops, excuse me, Get Rid Of Weight. We are not losing it! We have not intention of getting it back again. Have you ever lost weight and then gained it back later? When I Lost 40 Pounds in 16 Weeks, I did well. I lost 40 pounds. The bad thing is I found it again and put some of it right back where it was before. Luckily, I realized I had started to put it back on and started my plan to get rid of it forever. We don't want to get our weight back. This is a great mindset to make sure we take in and believe it. Our key to getting rid of the weight and not just losing it is to change the habits we had that resulted in us gaining the weight to begin with and getting it back after we lost it. Without changing these habits it will be harder to keep it off. If your wellness goal includes weight removal, (see I didn't say lose weight), we want to learn what habits we have that contribute to us gaining weight or doing things that keep us from getting rid of it. Once we learn what those habits are. We can change the response to the trigger to something helpful to move our goal forward. Go Out and Get Rid of The Weight You Want To. Get Rid of It! S2-E13: Without Change, There is No Growth - Bud Malmstrom

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2016 7:10

Without change, there is no growth.-Bud Malmstrom   Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Insert Podcast Link Here If you want to be different. . . My best friend and martial arts Sensei, Bud Malmstrom, uses this saying in his classes often. Every living thing changes, or must change, for without that change there would be no growth. A seed must change to be come a tree. A fruit must change from a bud, to a flower to the fruit. Without that change we just have plants, leaves. But, we wouldn't have that if the seed didn't change. We must change as people if we want to grow. We must change if we want to change. If you want to be different than you are today, you have to do things differently than you did before. Your goal is to lose weight, let's say. Regardless of your WHY, you must change something you were doing before. The best way to learn what you can or need to change it to start by journaling your day.  Start with waking up and finish before you go to bed. (Do before you start your Magic 30 Minutes of the Goal Achievement Success System Mental Bank program). When you journal, try to be as specific as possible and complete as possible. If you sit on the couch after work for an hour, watching TV, having a glass of wine or a beer to relax and snacking on some chips or pretzels before you get up to start dinner.... Don't forget to enter that. When you complete a week start looking at the activities that you do each day. What times do you eat anything. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and any and all snacking. How often are you snacking and what are you eating for those snacks. How many drinks are you having that have alcohol in them. Why am I concentrating on what you eat? It will be much easier for you to change your eating habits when you get started than it will be to change your activity habits. If your goal is to lose weight, what you eat is 80% of the work you will have to do. That's the biggest issue that we have in being overweight. Let's look at what we can change on this list. What are you snacking on during the day?  If you remember MY DOCTORS recommendations, I was allowed 200 calories for snacks during the day. You can snack, but you will want to limit your snacking to the right foods. Snacking is often a bad habit we have created as a response to a trigger. I talked about this and how to change your bad snacking habits in Episode 9 of Goal Getting Podcast titled Taming My Tiger. If you can't find it on iTunes, you can go to GoalGettingPodcast.com/episode-9 and click the link in the Show Notes Page at GoalGettingPodcast.com/s2e13 to listen. I discussed above a scenario that many of us have encountered. Tired from work, we have a beer or some wine and snack on chips or something like that. Both of these choices are full of unnecessary calories, especially before preparing dinner.  Each drink is between 110 - 300 calories. The chips or other snack food is likely as much or more, depending on the quantity you eat. If you can change that one habit when you come home, you will reduce your calorie consumption by 300-1000 calories each day. That is a big change and a big step forward toward the goal you set. Review your eating habits. When does your Tiger go on the prowl?  Tame Your Tiger and reduce the craving for those high calorie snacks. Make that little change that you can control. When you do it, Reward Yourself with something (non-food related).  Buy yourself something. Treat yourself to a movie, but stay away from the popcorn and candy.
