Daniel Laheru , MD, is the Professor of Oncology and Co-Director of Skip Viragh Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He holds the Ian MacMillian Professorship in Clinical Pancreatic Cancer Research. Dr. Laheru has developed a vaccine along with Dr. Elizabeth Jaffee, that supercharges the immune system and causes immune cells, which tend to be tolerant of cancer, to seek out and kill pancreatic cancer cells throughout the body. He is a Member of the Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence, Member of Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, and Associated Director of the Institute for Convergence Science.  “There's no job that's insignificant here. Whatever you're doing, you need to do it to the best of your abilities.” A monumental lesson from Dr. Daniel Laheru's parents taught him to notice the janitor who moves by silently in the corner, the nurse who works overtime without appreciation, and the security guard who passes a silent glance at every passerby. In this episode of The Medicine Mentors, Dr. Daniel Laheru explains recognizing the interconnected nature of every person's role in the infrastructure of medicine, instilling gratitude in our practice, and paying it back by paying it forward. Pearls of Wisdom:   1. Enjoy the time that you're a student because you'll wonder what you did with all your time after. The future is entirely open to you, the ceiling is what you make it. 2. I'm happy doing what I'm doing right now, and if I can do this five years from now, I'll be ecstatic.  3. The fellows, residents, and medical students are the lifeblood of the institution and the next generation so don't be shy about asking somebody if they have time to meet with you.  4. A good mentor is like a parent in the sense that they put your goals ahead of their own. My mentor really saw my future before I was able to understand it for myself. 5. The little things in the course of a day actually make a big difference. Thanking and appreciating someone goes a long way.

I can't believe a year has come and gone! Who knew, for me the first episode I would go from "Executive Producer," to actually becoming the host.  Looking back through our first year, so many amazing journeys, each one left me with wanting to learn more.  We shared so many emotions, laughter and tears but each one filled with love. With a voice that touches somewhere deep inside, Alyssa's soulful sound and powerful lyrics will send you jet-setting into a broad range of human emotions. Growing up on the open roads of America, with her RCA country recording artists parents, Baillie & The Boys, made it impossible for Alyssa not to witness the power and magic of music. At just 3 weeks old, her cradle was the gentle rocking of a tour bus. Her play ground encompassed sound checks at fairs and festivals and back stage dressing rooms at a slew of different venues including the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Award shows, and her “extended family” consisted of managers, promoters, roadies, musicians and other fellow mainstream country artists. At the age of 3, Alyssa performed on the Ralph Emory television show, Nashville Now. Where her version of the Leslie Gore classic; It's My Party brought the house down in front of millions of national viewers. At age 10, one of those major acts, Kenny Rogers, decided Alyssa was the perfect child singer to record a duet with him on his Christmas CD, Christmas From The Heart. By age 13, Alyssa had her first batch of songs written and received an endorsement from Gretsch Guitars. She had figured out her own unique style of guitar playing with open tunings inspired by Joni Mitchell. By age 16 she landed her first 50 date tour opening up for Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives. When it comes to pancreatic cancer, early detection is key. And while there is not currently a reliable test available, some of the world's leading researchers are looking to change that. Each year, Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation awards a number of grants, often funding projects or programs that are novel and not duplicative of current initiatives. In addition, Rolfe encourages the sharing of information and resources between the scientists, and among institutions pursuing pancreatic cancer research for the greatest opportunity for advancement. Pancreatic cancer expert, Dr. Anirban Maitra, is the first Co-Director and Scientific Director of M.D. Anderson Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research at the University of Texas in Houston. As well, Dr. Maitra is the center's Deputy Division Head of Academic Science and a Professor of Pathology and Translational Molecular Pathology. His time at both John Hopkins and the University of Texas has solidified his position as a leading expert in the field of pancreatic pathology. Dr. Maitra's passion is to improve patient's survival by discovering and developing ways to detect and treat pancreatic cancer.
