On today's episode we have Dale Strickler of Regenerative Wisdom, a consulting company based in Wichita, Kansas. He shares his background of growing up on a diversified family farm and initially pursuing engineering before switching to agronomy after being inspired by the concept of using nature to solve problems in agriculture.Dale discusses his journey of exploring regenerative practices, including rotational grazing, cover crops, and integrating multiple species like cattle, sheep, and poultry. He emphasizes the importance of feeding soil microbes through living roots and photosynthesis, rather than relying on tillage and external inputs.Dale emphasizes the need to shift from the dominant corn and soybean monoculture to more diverse, perennial-based systems that mimic natural ecosystems. He advocates for optimizing production on smaller acreages, prioritizing a good quality of life over the pursuit of ever-increasing scale.Links Mentioned in the EpisodeRegenerative WisdomVisit our Sponsors:Noble Research InstituteRedmondKencove Farm FenceGrazing Grass LinksNew Listener Resource GuideProvide feedback for the podcastWebsiteInsidersResources (Coming Soon)Community (on Facebook)Original Music by Louis Palfrey

He currently serves as lead agronomist for the nation's premier cover crop–specific seed company and is a featured speaker at many conferences and grazing schools around the country and globally. Strickler is the author of the books, The Drought Resilient Farm, Managing Pasture, and The Complete Guide to Restoring Your Soil, which was named a top ten farming book for 2021 by Modern Farmer. Dale's articles have appeared in publications like Mother Earth News, Acres USA, Stockman Grass Farmer, and Grit. John Kempf has featured Dale on the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, and you can read about his work at No-Till on the Plains, Mongabay, and the Atlanta Business Journal and in many Kansas news articles. As President of the Kansas Graziers Association, Dale advocates for greater rancher profits, autonomy, and best pasture practices. Dale is also on the regional advisory committee of the Kansas Water Office and is working on reducing soil erosion and water pollution in area water basin rivers and streams. Dale Strickler grew up on a farm and ranch near the small town of Colony, Kansas. He attended a small high school with 29 members in his graduating class and then received BS and MS degrees from Kansas State University in Science Education and Agronomy. Dale taught agronomy in higher education for 15 years, then entered into private industry. He has worked as an agronomist for Land O' Lakes, Star Seed, and Valent USA before landing his role with Green Cover Seed, the nation's premier cover crop–specific seed company. From 1997 to 2019 he operated his own ranch and, over the years, tested and refined his techniques for optimal land management. Ashlea and I talk more about what it can look like to ‘simplify to amplify' in all aspects of our life. Growing up in a generation that's big on ‘quitters don't win, and winners don't quit', we think that chasing (and achieving) the next big thing will FINALLY make us feel like we're enough, and prove our worth. Unfortunately, this is why soooo many of us are frazzled, overwhelmed, and pretty much drowning in the day to day. Instead of trying to do ALL.THE.THINGS, what if we chose to focus on one specific thing that we were lit up about, and actually made sense in our current season of life? Ashlea Stricker is a farm wife, mom of 3 boys, and hairstylist living in a rural town in central Iowa. When she's not chasing her boys or helping out on the farm, you can find her reading her favorite book, or watching Gilmore Girls (with a coffee in hand, and of course, avoiding laundry at all costs). Ashlea is a big dreamer and she loves cheering others on - she is a self-proclaimed cheerleader and your biggest hype girl! In this episode, we cover: What Ashlea's journey of ‘simplifying' has looked like Why so many of us are frazzled, overwhelmed, and exhausted all the time Prioritizing one main thing, instead of thinking you need to be doing #allthethings Digging deep into the ‘mental weight' that you're holding onto regarding expectations and limiting beliefs + how to shift to more empowering thoughts Showing others that it's actually okay to QUIT something when it's just not the best fit for you anymore Adjusting our level of expectation for the season of life we're in + letting go of the ‘perfectionism' tendencies that plague so many of us Focusing on what you truly want in the season of life you're in + giving yourself permission to grow and evolve along the way Resources & Links: Gather in Growth Sponsorship Inquiry EVOLVE Developing Entrepreneur Mastermind EVOLVE Scaling Entrepreneur Mastermind Get your Monthly Mileage Tracker here Learn more about my speaking Get your YouDoYou32 tracker! In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with Lise Strickler '86 and Mark Gallogly '86, the co-founders of Three Cairns Group, a mission driven investment and philanthropic firm focused on the climate crisis. In the years since Columbia Business School, where they met in 1986, Mark has worked in investing, philanthropy, and public policy; as co-founder of Centerbridge Partners, an investment firm with over $30 billion of assets under management; and before at The Blackstone Group. Mark's work in public service has included two stints under President Obama, and most recently at the US State Department as an Expert Senior Advisor to Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. Lise has extensive experience in the climate advocacy sector and has spent the last 20 years working with local, state, and national organizations to advance public policy and build momentum for scalable solutions to the world's climate crisis, including as a board member of the Environmental Defense Fund and co-chair of their 501(c)4 political advocacy partner, EDF Action; on the leadership council of the Yale School of the Environment; and on the advisory boards of Environmental Advocates NY, the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy, Columbia University's Climate School, the Tamer Center for Social Enterprise at Columbia Business School, and the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society. In this wide-ranging conversation, we cover a number of the challenges — and promising solutions — to the climate crisis. We begin with their respective “climate journeys,” including for both formative childhood experiences in nature and the outdoors. Lise credits her parents for “passing on the values of hard work, conservation, and leaving the world better than you found it,” and recalls how the environmental activism of the 1970s, including the passage of important legislation like the Clean Air and Water Acts, shaped her understanding of environmental issues and the potential to address them. We discuss the genesis of the Three Cairns Group, and some of its first major initiatives, each focused, in different ways, on developing ideas and climate solutions that are potentially scalable, and then working with partners across sectors and across the world to implement. For example, Three Cairns has recently launched Allied Climate Partners (ACP), a platform that has aggregated capital from philanthropy, governments, development finance institutions and the private sector to support early-stage climate projects and businesses in emerging markets, including in Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and Central America, Africa, and India. We also explore why Mark and Lise believe that universities, as centers of learning, “creators of new knowledge that advance civilization,” and places that produce the leaders for tomorrow are natural partners for their work on climate. We touch on various efforts they are involved in at Columbia and Yale. Finally, Lise and Mark remind us that, while the challenges of the climate crisis are many, there are number of breakthroughs that motivate them to keep moving forward: some technological, like MethaneSat, a new $100 million methane tracking satellite, or the falling costs of renewables; some policy related, like the passage of the federal Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, that are driving trillions of dollars into climate, or more locally the promise of congestion pricing in places like New York City that will reduce emissions and elevate the importance of public transportation as a climate and equity issue. Lise and Mark note that communicating these gains, and framing climate challenges as ones we have solutions to – and agency in – is critical to the tackling the crisis, particularly for young people “who want things to be better, and want to make them better.” Thanks for Listening! Are we there yet? Have we arrived at the intended destination? Have we reached the goal we set out for improving soil health and how soil functions? Have our good intentions of attempting to loosen the soil resulted in negative unintended consequences? In part one of our conversation with Dale Stricker of Regenerative Wisdoms, Dale stated that tillage and soil disturbance make farmers very susceptible to drought. However, in relying on deep tillage and subsoiling to remove a mechanical barrier (i.e., a compacted layer or hardpan), farmers may exacerbate the problem, and tillage can result in unintended and unforeseen consequences in decreased root growth, increased compaction, and limited soil porosity. Dale shares how roadbuilding is very analogous to the procedures that farmers follow in subsoiling and the multiple tillage passes often used to try to loosen the soil. Dale encourages farmers and market gardeners to consider soil health as a bank account, where deposits outweigh withdrawals that encourage real wealth and health. For more information about Dale's books on drought resilience, pasture management, restoring soil health, and the overall mission of Regenerative Wisdom, please visit https://www.regenerativewisdom.com/To access two years of the 4 The Soil: A Conversation podcast archives and additional resources on soil health-building principles, please visit https://www.4thesoil.org/. How functional and drought-resilient is your soil? Is your soil a week away from a drought and an hour away from a flood? Dale Strickler of Regenerative Wisdom talks with Jeff Ishee and Eric Bendfeldt about ways to increase drought resilience moving forward. Dale draws on his experience and expertise as a farmer, cattle rancher, college soil science instructor, and current agronomist to provide sound information for restoring soil function so the soil can hold water and allow water to infiltrate.Does tillage and subsoiling pay and make soil more drought-resilient? Dale states that tillage and soil disturbance make farmers very susceptible to drought. In many cases, farmers think they are moving forward with deep tillage and subsoiling to remove a mechanical barrier. However, subsoiling can increase the sealing of the soil surface and decrease soil porosity so oxygen and water are less available to plant roots. Despite modern transportation advancements, rail remains a superior method for moving heavy military equipment over vast inland distances. However, transporting tanks by train requires railyard facilities with specialized equipment capable of moving the armored vehicles onto and off of the rail cars. In response, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) developed the Rapidly Available Interface for trans-Loading (RAIL), a transportable ramp system that allows military vehicles to be onloaded or offloaded anywhere along a rail line. A collaboration between ERDC and the Combat Capabilities Development Command Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC), RAIL will provide greater operational flexibility to quickly transport armored vehicles where they are most needed. We talk about RAIL with Justin Strickler, chief of the Engineering Systems and Materials Division at ERDC's Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory. Topics discussed include the importance of trains to a modernized U.S. force (3:29) and how RAIL can improve current practice for loading and off-loading heavy armored vehicles (4:48) and enable more agile power projection for U.S. and Allied Forces (8:16). We also discuss the system's versatility (16:50), how it was developed in collaboration with GVSC (21:12) by rapidly adapting technology for offloading battle tanks at damaged seaport facilities (11:18), and how the effort has leveraged ERDC's deep expertise in force projection (30:32). For more information on RAIL, contact Strickler at Justin.S.Strickler (at) usace.army.mil. For more information on the Power of ERDC podcast, visit https://www.PowerofERDCPodcast.org.

Welcome to Episode 73 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring fellow Sports Dietitian Heidi Strickler, MS RD CSSD. Heidi is a trail runner and self-proclaimed outdoor junkie based in Seattle. I got a listener request to do a show on relative energy deficiency in sport - also known as RED-S (soon to be REDS) - around the same time I heard Heidi's interview on the Trail Society podcast, and knew she'd be a great dietitian to tackle this topic with me. I have covered this topic before but it's been over two years, so it was time to do an updated deep-dive.We cover the basics of REDS including warning signs, the normalization of disordered eating especially among endurance athletes, intentional versus unintentional under-fueling, the importance of nutrient timing versus end of day nutrient adequacy, practical advice on how to make sure you're eating enough and not just relying on hunger cues, menstrual dysfunction, what treatment to regain a period may look like, and SO much more. Please note - just like eating disorders do not have a specific "look," underfueled athletes may or may not show the clear warning signs of REDS that we discuss. For example, they may still have a normal period or they may have normal bloodwork. Pay attention to how you feel during the day, your bowel habits, your sleep, your appetite, how you're recovering from workouts, and the overall picture of your eating and training patterns.I hope you enjoy this episode and find it helpful! THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Mimic 1997 A disease carried by common cockroaches is killing Manhattan children. In an effort to stop the epidemic an entomologist, Susan Tyler, creates a mutant breed of insect that secretes a fluid to kill the roaches. This mutant breed was engineered to die after one generation, but three years later Susan finds out that the species has survived and evolved into a large, gruesome monster that can mimic human form. In New York City, cockroaches are spreading the deadly "Strickler's disease" that is claiming hundreds of the city's children. Due to an inability to develop a cure or vaccine for the disease Dr. Peter Mann, deputy director of the CDC, recruits entomologist Dr. Susan Tyler. In response, Dr. Tyler uses genetic engineering to create what she calls the "Judas breed", a hybrid between a mantis and a termite that releases an enzyme which accelerates the roaches' metabolism, with the effect that the roaches burn calories faster than they can nourish themselves and thus starve to death. The roaches carrying the disease are successfully eradicated, and Peter and Susan later marry. Three years later, a priest is chased and dragged underground by a strange assailant. The only witness is Chuy, a boy on the autism spectrum[4] with echolalia, a mental pattern of imitating noises, who refers to the attacker as "Mr. Funny Shoes" to his disbelieving guardian, an immigrant subway shoe shiner named Manny. Later two kids sell a "weird bug" from the subway to Susan, which she performs tests on, and realizes is similar to the Judas breed. Initially, she believes that this is impossible since the specimens she released were all female and designed with a lifespan of only a few months, which should have ensured that the breed would die off after a single generation. Before she can examine the insect further it is stolen by a strange figure who escapes out the window. After informing the police she later consults with her mentor, Dr. Gates, who autopsies a larger specimen found in the city's sewage treatment plants, and finds that its organs are fully formed, meaning the Judas breed is not only alive but has developed into a viable species, with a sizable colony underneath the city. Looking for more valuable specimens, the kids go down the tracks where they find a large egg sac and are then killed by the same strange assailant. Meanwhile, Chuy enters the abandoned church of the dead priest to find "Mr. Funny Shoes" and is abducted. Peter, his assistant Josh and MTA officer Leonard enter the maintenance tunnels to investigate but Peter and Leonard get stuck and send Josh for help. Susan encounters what appears to be a shadowy man in a trench coat on a train platform. As she approaches it, the figure unfolds into an insect the size of a human being. The creature abducts Susan and carries her into the tunnels. Meanwhile, Josh finds a way out but is found by a Judas and killed. Manny also enters the tunnels in search of Chuy and comes across Susan, whom he rescues along with Peter and Leonard, and they barricade themselves inside a train car.
Amanda speaks with Heidi Stickler, a Registered Sports Dietitian (RD/RDN), Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD), and Metabolic Efficiency Training Specialist (METS), with a Master's in Sports Nutrition (MSc) from Liverpool John Moores University in England. They discuss how diet can affect athletic performance, the taboo topic of training around a women's menstrual cycle, and how a women's period is actually a super power.

WOWOWOW welcome to 2023! Shout out to all my hobbyists listening, this episode is for you because not all artists need to sell what they make and honestly the hobbyists make up the majority of my listeners so I was stoked to have that conversation represented here too. Sara Strickler is today's guest and she is from Virginia, but currently lives on a small island called Alameda in the Bay Area and works by day as a designer for Nest. In her free time she's an incredible stained glass artist. She's actually one of the many great talents coming out of Dan Grimaldi's shop in San Francisco called Cradle of the Sun. Truth be told I had a really hard time naming this episode because we cover everything from her love and appreciation for Cup Noodle, the meaning of being a hobbyist and even Miss Piggie at a rave in Berlin in 1992. Or as a yogi cult guru. Wait what? You'll have to keep listening to find out what I mean…Join me as I crack it all wide open!!
