It's a fun BEHIND THE LENS this week thanks to writer/director/actor Rachel Suissa who I spoke with a few weeks ago specifically for today's show which is a salute to Mothers and Mother's Day courtesy of Rachel's new film GREEK MOTHERS NEVER DIE. Based on Rachel's own life, mapcap adventures, and mother-daughter angst, GREEK MOTHERS NEVER DIE is a love letter not only to Rachel's own mother, but mothers everywhere. Written, directed and starring Rachel Suissa, GREEK MOTHERS NEVER DIE is a delightful rom-com, brimming with Greek passion and plenty of family drama, as late bloomer Ella dreams of becoming a singer, but her overbearing Greek mother, Despina insists she take over the Gyros business and marry a Greek man. Rachel is animated, engaging, and thoughtful, all things that you'll hear in this exclusive conversation as we break down every element of the film, starting with highlighting its universal appeal and personal connections that it evokes. Rachel bares it all as she talks about the genesis and journey to make the film and shares anecdotes about her mother's influence, including a humorous scene where her mother bribed someone to hang out with her. We discuss the film's casting, particularly Abby Miner as Ella, which has a genuine and authentic feel. As we break down the production elements of GREEK MOTHERS NEVER DIE, we dive into the cinematography, editing process – and Rachel's unique method for selecting an editor, location and a favorite highlight of mine, the use of comic book graphics as scene interstitials, as well as the importance of music, which blends Greek and American themes. And Rachel even gives us some early intel on her next film, another fish out of water tale called "The American." http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This weeks show is focusing on Melbourne's film scene. In the first of three interviews, Flick will chat with Director Molly Reynolds to discuss her film A PORTRAIT OF LOVE. For over twenty years, Archibald Prize-winning artist Craig Ruddy and his partner Roberto Meza Mont filmed their life together.Their friend, documentary-maker Molly Reynolds (MY NAME IS GULPILIL) spent months immersed in Roberto's footage to craft an intimate portrait of their relationship, from over 5000 pieces of footage. We then hear from local director Timothy Despina Marshall about his debut feature IN THE ROOM WHERE HE WAITS, starring Daniel Monks. Having recently premiered at the 2024 Mardi Gras Film Festival earlier this year, this fresh psychological thriller is a claustrophobic story of grief and abandonment set in the close quarters of a hotel room during lockdown.Primal Screen's third guests are the Naarm/Birrarung Ga/Makassar Sulawesi, Indonesia-based film collective, Dogmilk Films. Local and independently run, @dogmilkfilms produces and makes space for alternative film and sound works. The collective places emphasis on cinema that pushes the boundaries of form and exhibition, which makes them an intersection for creative enquiry and exploration. Flick speaks with Lola Hewison, John Hewison and Sofie McClure about the screening of short-form works Dogmilk is curating for 2024 St. Kilda Film Festival.

In her new book Hitler's Northern Utopia: Building the New Order in Occupied Norway (Princeton University Press, 2020), Despina Stratigakos investigates the Nazi occupation of Norway. Between 1940 and 1945, German occupiers transformed Norway into a vast construction zone. This remarkable building campaign, largely unknown today, was designed to extend the Greater German Reich beyond the Arctic Circle and turn the Scandinavian country into a racial utopia. From ideal new cities to a scenic superhighway stretching from Berlin to northern Norway, plans to remake the country into a model “Aryan” society fired the imaginations of Hitler, his architect Albert Speer, and other Nazi leaders. In Hitler's Northern Utopia, Despina Stratigakos provides the first major history of Nazi efforts to build a Nordic empire—one that they believed would improve their genetic stock and confirm their destiny as a new order of Vikings. Drawing on extraordinary unpublished diaries, photographs, and maps, as well as newspapers from the period, Hitler's Northern Utopia tells the story of a broad range of completed and unrealized architectural and infrastructure projects far beyond the well-known German military defenses built on Norway's Atlantic coast. These ventures included maternity centers, cultural and recreational facilities for German soldiers, and a plan to create quintessential National Socialist communities out of twenty-three towns damaged in the German invasion, an overhaul Norwegian architects were expected to lead. The most ambitious scheme—a German cultural capital and naval base—remained a closely guarded secret for fear of provoking Norwegian resistance. A gripping account of the rise of a Nazi landscape in occupied Norway, Hitler's Northern Utopia reveals a haunting vision of what might have been—a world colonized under the swastika. From his earliest years Iakovos Tsalikis wanted to become a monk, but he would have to wait. The world had to get to know him and he had to get to know the world. Born in Livisi, a picturesque village in Asia Minor, the Tsalikis family was forcibly uprooted from their ancestral homeland. Leaving the life they knew behind, they took with them what was their true life - their Faith. Resettled in Northern Evia, the future Saint was raised in piety and trained in virtue by his grandmother Despina and mother Theodora. Iakovos worked hard alongside his father, Stavros, and eventually became the provider for the family. At the age of 32, he realized his calling in life by entering the Monastery of Saint David the Elder in Evia, living the rest of his life there as a monk. He rose above insurmountable obstacles, labored ascetically beyond what is human and suffered greatly for the sake of Christ. He received divine gifts as his reward, including clairvoyance and miracle-working, becoming an Elder of great stature. The author of this book, Professor Stylianos Papadopoulos, was blessed to know the Elder personally. His intimate knowledge of the Elder's life together with his literary talent make the story on these pages come alive. God has not left us without Saints in our age of falsehood and agnosticism. Saint Iakovos intercedes for us today, now glorified among the Saints in heaven. From the vivid, lively stories in this book, may we be moved to glorify God and ask Saint Iakovos to intercede for us! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/athonite-audio/support

Born in New York City to Greek parents, Despina “Debbie” Panagoulias eventually moved to Greece because her father, Alkis Panagoulias was a national Celebrity as the Manager of the Greek National Soccer team (think Bill Belichick). Growing up, it was her Mother's love of American culture and that introduced Despina into popular music. At age 15 Despina and her family moved to the Washington DC area as her father took a job as he head coach of the United States men's national soccer team and was later the Head Coach of the US Men's National Soccer team and then Head Coach of the US Olympic Soccer team in 1984. While dad was taking on coaching jobs, Despina was taking on music retail jobs; first at Waxie Maxies a Washington DC/Baltimore area record chain and then at Tower Records Tysons Corner in 1988. On this episode, we learn about why Despina's mother insisted on calling her Debbie; Greek record stores that didn't sell records; the culture shock of moving from cosmopolitan Greece to the sleepy suburbs of Washington DC; the early days of Tower Records Tysons Corner, Alexandria and Rockville, MD; Debbie's many hats as Video Regional, Book Regional, Video & Book Regional, Product Director, Regional Director and whatever else they threw at her; how the people she started with at Tower Tyson's Corner became her lifelong friends; what she enjoyed most about her work with Tower; the mentors she had who helped guide her Tower career; the last hurrah of the Tower Records Bonnaroo store 5 months before Tower closed down for good and what the Federal Government could learn that Tower Records learned long ago. Join us for a well rounded discussion about all things Tower Records.
On today's episode, we'll explore how to create space both on the emotional and physical front that will function to improve performance, and health of those within that workspace. If you haven't heard of Nikki Nair at this point, we'd invite you to come out from under that rock you're living in. But jokes aside, the last 12 months have been the Atlanta producer's year. He's toured seemingly endlessly, has found his way into a number of local scenes and has put out records for labels like Dirtybird, Lobster Theremin and Scuffed Recordings. If that weren't enough, he's also been putting out an illuminating series of monthly singles on his Bandcamp that show off both his restless muse and his seeming ability to both perfect and put his own stamp on any sub-genre or style he tries. People usually use some form of the word "bass" to describe Nikki Nair, because of the way his music flits between dubstep, drum & bass, electro and more. One moment he's making staggering hip-hop instrumentals that would have fit right into the old LA beat scene, the next minute he's making pneumatic techno or uptempo stuff that would fit right in one Juke Bounce Werk. His voracious appetite for new sounds comes across on his RA Podcast, which is a sprawling two-hours-plus of genre hopping and careful mixing, hopping from mood to mood like a 2-D video game platformer. It starts off perhaps a little slower than you'd expect, but weaves through countless Nikki Nair tracks, older selections from Wolfgang Voigt and Drexciya and mind-melting club tracks from newer producers including DJ ADHD, Despina, Limewax and more. If you want to know what the hippest, most inventive dance music sounds like, bridging continents and oceans, this mix is it. @nikki-nair Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/848
This beautiful soul sister Despina Charavgi brought so much light, wisdom and healing to this episode and into my life. At the time of this episode, I was dealing with a deep wound of abandonment, betrayal and jealousy. Just before recording, Despina did an emotion code session with me and I felt such a big emotional release. In a few days, the cord was cut entirely and I felt so abundant and had no attachment to previous events that were causing me deep pain and triggers I wasn't even aware of. Shortly after she removed this big abundance block, I opened my heart to love and I met the love of my life, which is a story for another time :). Who is this healer, my sister and this beautiful Force for Good, Despina Charavgi: “Healing the world, one heart at a time” is my motto. My mission is to bring healing and peace to all hearts with the energy healing modality The Emotion Code™. Born and living in Greece, I first pursued a career as an English teacher helping adults improve their English, as well as translating and subtitling movies for various international or local festivals. Now I help people release their trapped emotions in their bodies. I am a passionate helper and an advocate of change and growth. On Episode 179 of THE Amicable Divorce Expert podcast we have mediator Despina Mavridou, author of Mum, Dad, Can You Hear Me? And a child of divorce, as our guest to discuss the importance of communication between parents, how a lack of communication leads to growing apart and eventually divorce, and how divorce affects children and leads to Parental Alienation. Highlights from the Interview: I was trying to be the adult when I was 10. I saw my mother crying and tried to help her. I also tried to be the mediator between my parents, for instance, and ask my father for money, for my mother, because my mother didn't want to. There were emotions I tried to suppress until therapy in my adult life. I suppressed sadness, anger, and the alienation I experienced with my father. My parents were using me as a weapon to hurt each other. They didn't mean to, but they were because they never dealt with the issues that led to their divorce and therefore couldn't talk to each other without arguing. What should parents do to prepare for a divorce if there are minor children? Therapy. Nobody can deal with divorce alone. Everyone going through divorce needs help beyond attorneys. They need therapists, coaches, anyone who can help parents, especially fathers, to deal with the reasons for the divorce. Fathers feel a lot of shame and blame that they don't express. My mother cried a lot. I wanted to help her stop crying. I distanced myself from my father because I thought this would protect my mother from her sadness and anger. I thought that by siding with my mother it would make the whole divorce better for me, my sister, and my mother. My sister and I felt like we were in a battle between our parents, even to explain to mom what we did with our dad was uncomfortable. In order to make my mother happy, we felt we had to badmouth our dad. If parents don't know themselves well, lived a life that was fulfilling leading up to marriage and starting a family, they may not grow together as a family. My parents never learned how to communicate, how to put themselves first, and blamed each other for not being happy. My dad had an outside relationship because my mom spent more time working and raising my sister and I than she spent with my father, and they didn't grow as a couple. My mother made more money than my dad. That was a problem for my dad's pride. Listening and communicating are essential in developing a good relationship as parents and as a married couple. Kids don't want to be part of their parents' arguments: Different rules in both houses; Don't want to talk about money; Don't want to negotiate the co-parenting schedule. Parental alienation was the only answer in order to stop being the messenger between my parents. When I said to my mother that I would stop seeing my father in order to make her happy, my mother said this wasn't right. Although my mother spoke badly about my father, she also said that I should still see my father. I was very confused about this. I needed my mother's approval, and wanted to be a good girl, so I thought that if I ignored my father I would please my mother. 30 years later, my mother is in a new relationship but still expresses anger towards my father. The issues from the divorce linger because my mother never got help to work on those issues, nor did my father. My parents still don't talk. Biography of Despina Mavridou My name is Despina Mavridou. I am an author, a mediator and a lawyer in Greece. I have experienced the negative effects of divorce due to my parent's separation when I was 10 years old. I was in the middle of their fights for many years, even after the judgement of divorce was issued by the Court, trying to find a balance. Thus, when I was approximately 17 years old I took the decision that I don't want to see my dad anymore and this cost me my relationship with him for more than 20 years. We have reunited recently. As an adult I have worked as a lawyer for many years but in the last four years I have discovered mediation and a passion for writing. For this reason, I have decided to leave my job as a lawyer and concentrate mostly on my passion. My first published book is titled Mum, Dad, Can You Hear Me? This is because I was always feeling inside me that I wanted to share certain things with my parents so as to make them understand how I was feeling about the divorce. Through family mediations I understood how difficult it is for parents to get in their kid's shoes. For this reason, I wanted to give to the book Mum, Dad Can You Hear Me? a dual purpose. On one hand I want to help children understand that the divorce is not the end of the world and that they can have both parents in their lives. On the other hand, I want to help parents see the divorce through the eyes of a 10-year-old girl so as to better understand the thoughts, needs and feelings of the kids and how important it is for them to have both parents in their lives. For anyone who is struggling with the impact of divorce on their children, this episode is packed with eye-opening revelations for parents who may have inadvertently put their child in the middle of their battles. Modern Divorce Podcast Host Billie Tarascio is joined by Greek attorney and mediator Despina Mavridou, who talks about the concepts in her new book, "Mom, Dad, Can You Hear Me?"Common practice among divorcing parents is to make the other parent look bad either overtly, or by fixing the other parent's failings by coming to the rescue for the child in the middle. While rescuing the child every time Mom or Dad fails may be well-meaning, it's the child that suffers as a result. It's less obvious than trash-talking the other parent, but the child feels it nonetheless. That's just one of the examples Despina reveals in this podcast, which is a must-listen for divorcing parents.
