Ep 077: One topic that we know we wanted to discuss on our show is gambling and retirement in the State of Maine. So far, we have two retail casinos in Maine, one in Oxford and one in Bangor. Also, sports betting is getting closer and closer to becoming available in the Pine Tree State. With some cold harsh winters in Maine and a lack of entertainment options, there could be some potential for us to get a bit carried away with participating in retail and sports gambling. But how do we know if we're developing an addiction that we can't control? How much is too much? This can be especially problematic for retirees that feel like they have money to gamble but might be living beyond their means to allow for their funds to last for the entirety of their retirements. That's what this show is about! Our next guest is a graduate of the University of Washington and eventually went on to work for himself as a general contractor.  He built a solid reputation for years and was widely respected as a business owner and professional. What people didn't know is that he also spent 15 years as a raging gambling addict, lost millions, and nearly destroyed his family. Our guest is a TEDx speaker currently presenting to college student-athletes across the country, and he's been fortunate enough to guest on over 200 podcasts worldwide. With that, please welcome Patrick Chester to The Retirement Success in Maine Podcast! Chapters: Welcome, Patrick Chester! [3:11] What are the signs of a gambling problem versus recreational gambling? [16:13] What are the major risks with problem gambling and who is more likely to develop a compulsive gambling issue? [22:27] What is the best way for us to help a loved one suffering from a gambling addiction? Is there a “right way” to help? [30:36] How will Patrick find his personal Retirement Success? [43:03] Ben and Curtis conclude the conversation. [46:11]

It's hard to say what the trigger is, as its different for each person but Patrick traces his trigger back to when he was young.  His father took him and his sister to parties where people were gambling and drinking and having a great time. Patrick didn't recognise the dangers of gambling because he had grown up seeing it as fun and harmless, something you could do as a family. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. 27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs.” 28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.””   --------------- Episode Summary/For Further ExplorationJohn's 4 Rules for Biblical Interpretation: How does what you're reading apply to the Life of Jesus or the Life of the Author? Philippians 4:13, “I can do all this through him (Christ) who gives me strength.” Guest for This Week's Episode: Chad Poe ------------------------ Episode Summary/For Further ExplorationJohn's 4 Rules for Biblical Interpretation: How does what you're reading apply to the Life of Jesus or the Life of the Author? Read the passage in different translations. Is it typically only used in one specific translation? What did it mean to the original hearers? Interpret the Bible with The Bible. Go to other parts of the Bible and see if the subject text is consistent with the character of God found elsewhere.  ------------------------ Resources & References Bible References: Acts 16:16-40, Philippians 2:5-11, Philippians 3:7-14, Philippians 4:2, Philippians 4:10-12, Philippians 4:13,  Chad Poe: Website: http://www.chadpoe.com (www.chadpoe.com) Hold On Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hold-on/id1536236038 (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hold-on/id1536236038) Grace Bible Church: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/grace-bible-church-sermon-audio/id1220960660 (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/grace-bible-church-sermon-audio/id1220960660) The Power Team: https://youtu.be/kr2j9w0BqD0 (https://youtu.be/kr2j9w0BqD0) Best Pizza in Huntsville? https://earthandstonepizza.com/ (https://earthandstonepizza.com/) Rosie's Cantina https://rosiesmexicancantina.com/ (https://rosiesmexicancantina.com/) ------------------------ Additional Context On bringing "presuppositions" to our reading of Scripture: “Whether one likes it or not, every reader is at the same time an interpreter. That is, most of us assume as we read that we also understand what we read. We also tend to think that our understanding is the same thing as the Holy Spirit's or human author's intent. However, we invariably bring to the text all that we are, with all of our experiences, culture, and prior understandings of words and ideas. Sometimes what we bring to the text, unintentionally to be sure, leads us astray, or else causes us to read all kinds of foreign ideas into the text.”        ― Gordon D. Repetitive compulsive behavior's is our topic today. Some disorders are classified as impulse control disorder while some have their own classification such as eating disorders. Just so we don't confuse impulse-control disorders with obsessive compulsive disorders, I want to explain the different definitions. Impulse-control disorder is unable to resist an impulse that is harmful to the person involved in the behavior or others but started out as pleasurable. Also, there may be a rising sense of tension or arousal before committing the act, followed by gratification, pleasure, and then guilt over the consequences of the behavior.Obsessive-compulsive disorder is engaging in a repetitive activity not for pleasure but to reduce anxiety caused by obsessive thoughts.
