Washington’s most extraordinary achievement was not winning the Revolutionary War or helping found a new nation. It was something far rarer: He gave up power, twice. First, when he resigned his command after victory. Then again, when he stepped down as president, establishing a precedent no law required and no force could compel. In an age dominated by kings and emperors, Washington chose restraint, and in doing so, he helped define the American experiment. There’s really no comparison to what Washington did, except for Byzantine General Belisarius and Roman general Cincinnatus. After being granted absolute dictatorial authority to rescue an encircled Roman army, Cincinnatus held it for only 15 days, and immediately resigned his office to return to his small farm across the Tiber. Belisarius was offered the Western Roman imperial crown by the Ostrogoths in 540 but claimed the city for Emperor Justinian, and surrendered command to return home. Washington’s renunciation was harder because, unlike Cincinnatus and Belisarius, he had no emperor above him or proven institutional framework to enforce his departure, instead walking away twice when his own unpaid, loyal army actively urged him to seize supreme power over a fragile, untested nation. Today’s guest is Richard Lim, author of “Refusing a Crown: How George Washington Changed the World.” We place Washington’s decisions within the sweeping Western shift from monarchy to republic, showing why that transition was anything but inevitable. After all, From Napoleon to Simón Bolívar, revolutionary leaders across the world found themselves compared unfavorably to the American who walked away from power. We see why Washington walking away from power was the most important moment in early American History.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You don't need a tyrant to kill a republic. You just need permission.133 BC. The Capitol. Broken benches, snapped legs, senators pouring out of a meeting to attack an election already underway. For more than three and a half centuries — since the tribune of the plebs was created around 494 BC — no sitting tribune had been touched by his own government, let alone killed. Tribunes were sacrosanct, physically untouchable under Roman law. If you laid a hand on one, any Roman citizen could legally kill you for it. That protection was written into the Constitution specifically to shield ordinary Romans from the Senate. On the day Tiberius Gracchus stood for reelection, that protection dissolved in about ten minutes. Scipio Nasica — Rome's Pontifex Maximus, its own chief priest — led a group of senators out of the meeting where they'd just failed to persuade the consul to act. They snapped the legs off their own benches. They walked to where the assembly was gathering. They beat Tiberius Gracchus and about 300 of his supporters to death, and threw his body into the Tiber like a criminal. The moment the first bench leg came down on his skull, the Roman Republic entered a phase it would never leave. Every Roman strongman who came after — Marius, Sulla, Caesar — could look back at this one afternoon and say the same thing: it's already been done. But here's what most treatments miss: Tiberius Gracchus was RIGHT about the problem. The land crisis was real. The recruiting collapse was real. The illegally-held ager publicus was real. What killed the Republic wasn't the reform itself. It was the specific way he pushed it through, and the specific way the Senate chose to answer. This is Episode 3 of the "Fall of the Roman Republic" series and the first specific case episode after Ep 113 (the system explained) and Ep 115 (the 100-year framework primer). Every subsequent episode traces one more layer breaking off the same structure that cracks right here in 133 BC.CHAPTERS:00:00 The Day the Roman Senate Killed One of Its Own04:25 The First Stone Falls Out of the Arch05:36 Who Tiberius Gracchus Actually Was (Cornelia's Son, Scipio's Grandson)07:00 The Empty Countryside That Radicalized Him09:22 The Land Reform That Wasn't Even Radical12:03 The Octavius Veto: The Senate Breaks the First Norm14:32 Deposing Octavius: Tiberius Answers by Breaking Another15:46 The Re-election Bid That Sealed His Fate16:33 Scipio Nasica Leads the Killing on the Capitol17:45 Why Every Roman Warlord After This Cites 133 BC19:05 Money, Borders, Power: The Framework Applied22:34 Next: Gaius Gracchus and the EscalationSources & further reading:Plutarch, Life of Tiberius Gracchus — the specific killing details (bench legs, 300 supporters, body in Tiber), Octavius as a large ager publicus holderAppian, The Civil Wars, Book 1 — the "first internal Roman quarrel settled by murder inside the city" framingMary Beard, SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome — the argument that Tiberius's actual program was conservative, and the ferocity of reaction was what was radicalDavid Stockton, The Gracchi — the specialist monograph on the brothersErich Gruen, The Last Generation of the Roman Republic — the definitive scholarly account of the Republic's declineAndrew Lintott, Violence in Republican Rome — for the specific pattern of political violence becoming normalTom Holland, Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic — accessible narrative of the fallLivy, Periochae — the surviving summary for this period
Mayores cosas has de ver». Has de ver cosas mayores.»

Joe talks with Ryan Hurd who recently converted from Protestantism to the Catholic Faith, how studying Thomas Aquinas led him across the Tiber, and how this could be becoming something of a meme… Transcript: Joe: Welcome back to Shameless Popery. I’m Joe Heschmeyer and I saw a fascinating discussion between three Baptists about people studying Thomas Aquinas and becoming Catholic. And I though a great person to talk about that whole concept with would be Ryan Hurd, a Protestant domestic scholar who recently became Catholic. So first of all, Ryan, thank you so much for coming on. Co...

Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: January, 2021This episode of Weird Darkness moves from ghost camels haunting the Arizona desert to corpses that kept making history after death, a Baltimore poisoning that gripped a courtroom for weeks, a professor fooled by carved stones, a child's murder in the Thames that London police have never solved, a Tokyo geisha who killed the man she loved, and a glowing-eyed creature on an English canal bridge. It opens in the American southwest, where the U.S. War Department imported some seventy-two camels in 1857 to haul supplies, only to turn the animals loose in the desert when the Civil War broke out and the soldiers tired of their foul temper and habit of spooking horses. Wild camels roamed Arizona for decades afterward, and one became legend as the Red Ghost — a beast blamed for trampling a woman to death in 1883 and later seen carrying a dead man lashed to its back, a rider who eventually decayed until a human skull dropped from the saddle in front of a group of startled prospectors. An Arizona farmer finally shot the animal in 1893, still wearing the leather straps that had held its corpse rider in place. From there the episode turns to figures who kept shaping the world after they died. A gang of Chicago counterfeiters led by "Big Jim" Kennally plotted in 1876 to steal Abraham Lincoln's body from his Springfield tomb and ransom it for a jailed engraver, foiled by a Secret Service informant working for the very agency Lincoln himself had signed into existence. A grave robber broke into George Washington's crypt at Mount Vernon in 1830 hunting the president's skull and made off with the wrong one. The British philosopher Jeremy Bentham left instructions to have his body dissected and mummified, and it sits on display at University College London to this day. And in the ninth century Pope Stephen VI dug up his predecessor Formosus, dressed the rotting corpse in papal vestments, propped it up for trial, found it guilty, and had it thrown into the Tiber.Next comes Baltimore in 1871, where Elizabeth Wharton, a respected society widow, hosted General William Scott Ketchum in her home on Hamilton Place until he fell suddenly ill and died with twenty grains of tartar emetic in his stomach — fifteen is enough to kill. Police discovered she had bought sixty grains days earlier, and a financial advisor named Eugene Van Ness nearly died the same way after she served him a drink. Her forty-two-day poison trial in Annapolis exhausted the medical and chemical experts of the day, and after deliberating through the night the jury acquitted her of murder. The episode then crosses to Germany, where Johann Beringer, a celebrated professor at the University of Würzburg, spent 1725 collecting strange carved stones dug up on Mount Eibelstadt by teenage boys he had hired — figures of birds, lizards, comets, and the name of God rendered in Hebrew. Convinced they were the handiwork of God himself, he published a book on them called the Lithographiae Wirceburgensis, only to learn the nearly two thousand stones had been planted by two envious colleagues, J. Ignatz Roderick and Johann Georg von Eckhart, who thought him an arrogant know-it-all and wanted to humble him. From an academic hoax the episode moves to an unsolved horror. On September 21st, 2001, a child's headless, limbless torso surfaced from the Thames near the Globe Theatre, wrapped in orange cloth, and London's Metropolitan Police could give the boy no name but Adam. Forensic analysis of poison and minerals in his remains traced him to the Benin region of Nigeria and showed he had been paralyzed and drained of blood in what investigators believed was a muti ritual killing. Nelson Mandela made an international appeal for information, and traffickers including Kingsley Ojo and a caregiver named Joyce Osagiede were investigated, but no one has ever been convicted and the boy's true identity has never been confirmed. The episode carries that darkness into 1936 Tokyo, where Sada Abe strangled her lover Kichizo Ishida in an inn after a days-long affair, then took a kitchen knife to his body and carried a severed part of him away in her handbag. Her capture two days later set off a national obsession the papers called "Sada mania," and her testimony about killing the man she refused to share became a bestseller in a country where such candor was scandalous. She was sentenced to six years, served her time as a model prisoner, and vanished from public life sometime after 1970.The episode closes on a cold English night in January 1879, when a furniture hauler crossing Bridge 39 over the Shropshire Union Canal near the village of Ranton was charged by a shaggy, ape-like creature with glowing eyes that leapt onto his cart and terrified his horse. When he swung his whip at the thing, the lash passed straight through its body, and the creature bolted down toward the canal and vanished. The folklorist Charlotte Burne later learned from the village constable that the sightings had begun only days after a man drowned in that same canal, in a place where people believed a violent death could send someone back in the shape of a beast.
January, in the year 897. A courtroom in Rome. In the defendant's chair sits a pope who has been dead for nine months. His name was Formosus. The reigning pope ordered the body pulled from its tomb, dressed in full vestments, and propped upright for trial. Church law required that a defendant answer, so the synod supplied a voice: a junior deacon stood beside the throne and replied to the prosecution on the dead man's behalf. The court convicted the corpse, stripped the vestments from it, cut the three blessing fingers from the right hand, and threw what remained into the Tiber. A monk fished the body from the reeds and kept it hidden until saner men could bury it again.
The recording is from April 17, 2025. The recording point was chosen under the iron bridge that crosses the Tiber River near the town of Pretola a few kilometers from Perugia in Umbria. Interesting reflections and resonances are created under the bridge. Water is certainly the dominant acoustic element but its veil is constantly torn by a multitude of sounds. The bridge, despite being located in a densely populated and busy area, isolates the urban environment creating a capsule of natural sounds.Recorded by Nicola Fumo Frattegiani.
An emperor stands barefoot in the snow for three days. Not a prisoner. Not a peasant. The ruler of Christendom, waiting for a bishop to open a door. That is not a medieval curiosity. That is a system. And that system had a logic. A bishop with no army teaches an emperor with every army how to repent. But watch what happens next. In 500 years, that prophetic voice becomes the hand that places the crown. The same weapon that stopped a massacre at Thessalonica is now the weapon that puts a king in the snow at Canossa. Same tool. Completely different purpose. By the High Middle Ages, Rome was not a voice outside the throne. Rome was the operating system of Western Civilization, and grace would either flow through her pipes or not flow at all. Then one monk reads his Bible. And here in 2026, some of the loudest voices on the right are telling you that the machine he dismantled is exactly what America needs now. And here in 2026, some of the loudest voices on the right are telling you that the machine he dismantled is exactly what America needs now. https://bredenhof.ca/2017/03/28/true-and-false-catholicism/“Swimming the Tiber” is a popular way of saying that a Protestant has defected to Roman Catholicism (the Tiber River flows through Rome). If you're paying attention, periodically you hear of someone “swimming the Tiber.” Especially if it's someone who has been extensively trained in Reformed theology, you might be left wondering if the Reformation actually got it all wrong. You may wonder if perhaps we have misunderstood Roman Catholic doctrine. You might doubt whether the Reformation is something to be celebrated, or whether it should be deplored as having been unnecessary. Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.

C'era molta erba in quel luogo.

Gli risposero: «No».

An Interview with Rev. Dr. Bridget Mary Meehan What is "gnosis," and does it belong within Catholic tradition? In this conversation, Rev. Dr. Bridget Mary Meehan—bishop in the Roman Catholic Womanpriests movement—shares how inner, experiential knowing of God has long shaped Christian mysticism. From the Gospel of Mary to Teresa of Ávila, she explores how forgotten voices and lived experience challenge hierarchy and renew faith, offering a vision of a more inclusive and Spirit-led church today. Rev. Dr. Bridget Mary Meehan is a bishop in the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests (ARCWP) and a prophetic leader in the global movement for women's equality in the Church. She is also a certified minister in the Federation of Christian Ministries, co-founder of People's Catholic Seminary, and Dean of the Masters in Divinity and Doctor of Ministry programs at Global Ministries University. She was ordained in 2006 as one of the first eight Roman Catholic Women Priests in the U.S., and in 2024, she ordained three deacons and three priests at the historic "Ordination on the Tiber" in Rome, a landmark public witness for women's ordination. 23 And he said to them: Doubtless you will say to me this similitude: Physician, heal thyself: as great things as we have heard done in Capharnaum, do also here in thy own country.Et ait illis : Utique dicetis mihi hanc similitudinem : Medice cura teipsum : quanta audivimus facta in Capharnaum, fac et hic in patria tua. 24 And he said: Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth. In veritate dico vobis, multae viduae erant in diebus Eliae in Israel, quando clausum est caelum annis tribus et mensibus sex, cum facta esset fames magna in omni terra : 26 And to none of them was Elias sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman.et ad nullam illarum missus est Elias, nisi in Sarepta Sidoniae, ad mulierem viduam. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian. 28 And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger. 29 And they rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the midst of them, went his way.Ipse autem transiens per medium illorum, ibat. The Gospel speaks to us of Naaman, the valiant general of the King of Syria's army. He was cured by bathing in the Jordan, although he did not belong to the race of Israel. Later on Jesus was to plunge himself into the same river and to communicate a sanctifying virtue to its waters. Naaman, therefore, is a figure of the heathen whom the Church by baptism cures of the leprosy of sin. Peter, says Tertullian, has baptised in the Tiber, and those that he has cleansed from leprosy of sin, have abandoned the waters of Damascus, by which is mean their sensual life. Let us renew ourselves in the spirit of baptism by purifying our hearts in the salutary bath of penitence. This will cure them of the leprosy of the soul called sin.

In the heart of Rome's Jewish Ghetto, just opposite the Portico d'Ottavia and steps from the Teatro di Marcello, there is a staircase that leads down into history. That staircase belongs to Leone Limentani Rome, one of the oldest family-run shops in the city — founded in 1820 and still operated by the same family, now in its seventh generation. I first discovered Leone Limentani Rome decades ago when I lived on Via Giulia. I would walk along the Tiber and into the Ghetto, descend those stairs, and find myself in what felt like an Aladdin's cave of porcelain, crystal, and silver. Shelves stretched in every direction. Ginori plates. Limoges porcelain. Christofle cutlery. Baccarat crystal. Everything touchable. Everything real. And that tactile immediacy is still part of what makes Leone Limentani Rome so special today.
396 BC. The city of Veii lies in ruins, destroyed by Rome in a brutal act of early imperial expansion. Yet just six years later, Rome itself would face devastation at the hands of invading Gauls, a shock that would shape the city's identity for generations. In this episode of The Ancients, Tristan Hughes is joined by Professor Jeremy Armstrong to explore the origins of Rome's empire. From the conquest of rival cities and the trauma of invasion to the development of Roman warfare, politics, and identity, this episode reveals how these early crises set the stage for Rome's rise to dominance along the Tiber and beyond.MORE:The Kings of RomeListen on AppleListen on SpotifyThe Origins of Rome:Listen on AppleListen on Spotify Presented by Tristan Hughes. The Key to Success in 2026. If you go to Rome, just west of the Colosseum, is The Ponte Fabricio: a beautiful, stone, double-arch pedestrian bridge over the Tiber river that you walk over to get over to the Isola Tiberina island. What most people may not realize is that that bridge is 2,088 years old. That's right, it was constructed in 62 BC. It is one of the oldest, extent, structures still in use whose arch uses a keystone. What's a keystone? A wedge-shaped stone that excellently and evenly distrubutes the wieght of the stones so that thes structure remains stable. How stable? Exactly 2,088 years stable. There are Keystone Decisions that you made a long time ago - they direct your affairs. The question is not IF you have them but ARE THEY GENERATIVE and HELPFUL?
