EVERYDAY DISCIPLES S1:E3 Following the way of Jesus in everything, everywhere, every day. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” - Mark 1:17 SHOW NOTES Welcome to the Everyday Disciples podcast, where we talk about what it means to follow the way of Jesus in everything, everywhere, every day. This month, we are talking about what it means to be steeped in Scripture. WHAT IS THE BIBLE? We believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible and authoritative Word of God. We believe the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament as being verbally and completely inerrant in the original writings and of supreme and final authority in faith and life. We believe that God has not added to, deleted from, or altered the canon of the Bible with subsequent writings and revelations. [2 Timothy 3:15-17, 2 Peter 1:21] The Bible is a unified story that leads us to Jesus. It is unique in that it is historical and divine, meaning it was written by real people at real points in History over a 1000-year period by over 40 authors in 3 different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek). But most importantly, it is the Word of God.  5 WAYS TO INTERACT WITH SCRIPTURE Hear the word Read the word Study the word Memorize the word Meditate on the word H.E.A.R. The WordWhen we read through Scripture, we want to go at a pace that allows it to read us. Below is a simple acronym that will help guide our time as we read Scripture and seek to live it out. Each day, we will follow the pattern of HEAR. H - Highlight Read through the passage for the day. As you read, pay attention to what stands out. Maybe highlight or underline a word or phrase that catches your attention. E – Examine it Examine what the passage has to teach you. Study words and their root meaning, and/or study the context of the passage. Pay attention to the Holy Spirit's prompting as you read and press into what you can learn from scripture. A – Apply it Ask yourself how you might apply what you have read to your day and ask the Holy Spirit what you should take away from the passage. Write down what you want to apply, or make note of it some other way. R – Respond in prayer Close your time by using scripture and what you have read to lead your prayer time. Invite the Lord to continue speaking to you through the day on what you've studied.  PRACTICES FOR THE MONTH: 1. BEGIN EACH DAY WITH SCRIPTURE Start every day with the Word. Scripture before your phone, TV, or emails. Scripture before everything. If you are unsure where to start, we have a Bible reading plan here: Crossroads Bible Reading Plan 2025 2. READ A WHOLE BOOK IN ONE SITTING We have become a culture of soundbites and short attention spans. Many of the letters of the New Testament were written to be read aloud in one sitting. At some point, this month, read or listen to an entire book straight through. See the attached graphic to help you choose. 3. MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE Over this next month, memorize two passages of scripture. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss a topic that was highly requested by our faithful podcast listeners - why are there so many translations of the Bible out there? Some common follow-up questions are: Do all of these translations mean that we've deviated from the original texts? Is there one translation that is better than all the others? Episode Links The truth is that unless you are reading the Old Testament Scriptures in Hebrew, and the New Testament Scriptures in Koine Greek, any Bible that you read is a translation of the original text. And this is true not only for the Bible, but also for countless historical writings that have been translated into modern languages. Dr. White mentioned two books during today's conversation that would be extremely helpful to deepen your understanding of the various translations of the Bible. The first is The Bible: A Global History written by Bruce Gordon, which you can find HERE. The second is How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth written by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart, which you can find HERE. Both include very helpful information on the various translations of the Bible. Not all translations are created equal, however. There are some that exist without a reputable team of scholars behind them, and others that are produced to undermine other translations - usually created by cult forms of religion. A good example of this is the “New World Translation” produced by Jehovah's Witnesses. For more on this, we'd encourage you to listen to the Church & Culture Podcast episode CCP18: On Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. Finally, we'd encourage you to explore a series given by Dr. White at Mecklenburg Community Church titled “How to Bible.” The installments of this series walk you through: How to Get Oriented, How to Read and Interpret It, How to Apply It and How to Believe It. You can find it on Church & Culture HERE. JB, my youngest son, fell over a Lysol can in the living room and is currently on crutches. I promise I didn't make this up. More details are coming on today's show, but If you're not following me on social media you need to do so for no other reason than to see the cuteness of him navigating crutches (unsuccessfully).    Today we're kicking off a series on trusting God and letting go of our metaphorical crutches in order to hand our deepest struggles over to the Lord. Psalm 20:7 is one of my favorite verses on trust and it says, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”    It's doubtful you're included to put your trust in chariots and horses, but those blanks are likely filled in with things like financial stability, a spouse's approval, recognition, achievement, or a number of other things.   Let's take a few months to consider how we can very practically learn to trust God in the areas where we are inclined to use the crutches of worry, addiction, approval, etc.    Here's a little preview of where we're heading the next few months:    To kick-off this series, we have none other than the amazing Max Lucado joining us today. We're talking about trusting God with our failures because  God Never Gives Up On You, despite the shortcomings and fall flat on your face moments that inevitably happen.    Take a minute to listen to Pastor Max today, and then share this with a friend as we kick-off our new fall series!   God Never Gives Up On You by Max Lucado How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Gordon Fee

Alisa Childers is an American singer and songwriter. She's best known right now for being an Apologist. Prior to becoming known as an Apologist, she was known for being a singer in the all-female Christian band ZOEgirl. She experienced a period of profound doubt about her faith in her mid-thirties. She felt uncertainty and didn't know where to find answers to her questions, or if answers existed at all. She began to investigate her faith intellectually by taking seminary classes and reading everything she could get her hands on. This began her journey from unreasoned doubt into a vibrant, rational, and informed faith. She has written a couple books that have been extremely impactful in mine and my family's life, as well as thousands of others. The first one she wrote was called “Another Gospel” where describes the journey she took over several years as she wrestled with questions that struck at the core of the Christian faith and found the truth. This book is very powerful! Her most recent book,“Live Your Truth & Other Lies,” goes through things we say as Christians that are not true and how that affects our life. If you want to hear ongoing Bible teaching, if you're interested in the historicity of the Bible and the doctrines of the Christian faith, listen to her on her podcast “Alisa Childers Podcast.” She's able to network and interview with many experts in different aspects of the Christian faith. This week on Families For Life, Bryan and Brian continue their series about Understanding God's Word with an examination of the last type of genres found within the Scriptures: the Epistles. The word epistle means “letter,” and the epistles of the Bible are considered the letters found in the New Testament. To paraphrase one pastor, it's like reading someone else's mail. These letters often gave counsel, addressed division or error within a body, or came as personal exhortations. Although they were written with a specific audience in mind at the time, the fact that they are the inspired word of God and we have them in our Bibles means that there is relevant truth for all time to be found for everyone. We'll look at a few examples and discuss some areas where people can get off track in applying them, as well. The Bible is necessary to understanding our faith as Christians and our history as the Church. But it's also a complicated book and full of stories that are difficult to wrap your head around. Especially as you're told it's somehow a historical document, a poetry collection, a self-help guide, an instruction manual, and also includes everything you could possibly need to know in order to live a good life. And it's hard to have frank conversations about any of this, because it is an incredibly touchy subject for most people. But we're talking about with partner church pastor Will Barnes, and we're asking questions like: What do we need to know about the Bible in order to understand it? Does God contradict himself in his Word? And are there questions we should be asking, but aren't? The Ninth and Final episode in a 9-part series on some of the most mis-interpreted verses in the Bible. Mark 7:24-28, “24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. 27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs.” 28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.””   --------------- Episode Summary/For Further ExplorationJohn's 4 Rules for Biblical Interpretation: How does what you're reading apply to the Life of Jesus or the Life of the Author? Read the passage in different translations. Is it typically only used in one specific translation? What did it mean to the original hearers? Interpret the Bible with The Bible. Go to other parts of the Bible and see if the subject text is consistent with the character of God found elsewhere.  *If you have thoughts or questions, we'd love to answer them in a “Straight Out of Context” podcast wrap-up show. She was the 4th generation to be in either this cult or a similar one. What was she to do now? She describes it this way: "It's like a mourning. It's like a death, someone has died." But she's still standing. And she's strong. She has equal grit and loving heart, creating a beautifully rare combination that will undoubtedly bless lives. Today we begin an occasional series looking at verses that are typically taken out of their biblical context, and we attempt to put them back into their context. First up, Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Ever popular in the sports world, we talk about what it really means to have Christ strengthen us, and how we can apply it in our everyday lives. Our recommendations: 1) Read the Bible. 2) Become a member at a church. 3) How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart (https://smile.amazon.com/How-Read-Bible-All-Worth/dp/0310517826/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3D4A8BYQ9OB9D&dchild=1&keywords=how+to+read+the+bible+for+all+its+worth&qid=1619740280&sprefix=how+to+read+the+bib%2Caps%2C220&sr=8-1). 4) Knowing Scripture by R. Sklar's doctoral studies focused on the theology of sin, impurity, sacrifice, and atonement in the Old Testament sacrificial system. He contributed to the study notes of Leviticus for the ESV Study Bible, the introduction and notes for Leviticus for The Gospel Transformation Bible, and he wrote a commentary on Leviticus for the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary Series (InterVarsity Press). In this conversation, Dr. Sklar delineates five reasons Leviticus is a challenging book to read and understand, as well as to teach:It is mostly law, which is unappealing to most of us.It is culturally strange. It emphasizes ritual which we tend to assume is meaningless. Its laws and teachings appear to be unfair or unjust. It is hard to fit into the larger story of the Bible. But Sklar also offers keen insights into how to make sense of the book and break down some of the barriers of interest in the book. He also talks about how to present Christ through discussing issues that arise in the book such as slavery, homosexuality, ritual impurity, and disability.Recommended Resources by and from Jay SklarThe Book of Leviticus (New International Commentary on the Old Testament) by Gordon J.
