You all know us too well to know that we couldn't not track down a Saint Peter's alumni after the recent magical run. What better guest to have than the school's all-time leader in points per game average?! Rich Rinaldi is in the house and it is an HONOR! We of course love the recognition the current Saint Peter's team is getting recently, but we wanted to show some love to one of the staples of the school's history and program.Rich Rinaldi was a gifted scorer averaging 28.6 points per game by the time he was a senior at Saint Peter's. He went on to become the 43rd overall pick in the 1971 NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets where he played three years in the NBA & ABA and many more overseas. After his playing days he worked for the National Basketball Players Association, counseling players on the transition to post-basketball careers. Rinaldi shares great stories about the High School and blacktop scene in New York, his time at Saint Peter's, Elnardo Webster, Jo Jo White, Pete Maravich, Phil Chenier, Walt Frazier, Jerry West, Walt Bellamy, Stan Love, giving fouls, wild experiences overseas, Saint Peter's magical run to the Elite Eight and MUCH more!We can't thank Rinaldi enough for his time and all of the amazing stories he shared. His era was special and the young listeners will learn A LOT about the game in this one. He was extremely generous with his time, detailed with his answers, and truly one of our favorite guests we've had. We know you will all feel the same. It's great to appreciate what those Saint Peter's boys just did… but make sure you appreciate the greats that came before them as well. Thank you Rich Rinaldi! You can find this episode on Apple, Spotify or any source for podcasts.Follow us on social media for news, updates and highlight reels!Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notin.myhouse.79Instagram- @Not_in_my_house_podcastTwitter - @NOTINMYHOUSEpc

Where have the local sports broadcasters gone? How much has the world of sports coverage changed over the years? Our guest this week is the long time voice of Wizards/Bullets basketball, Steve Buckhantz. Buck has worked all over the country as a sports broadcaster. He became an institution in the Washington, DC market as a sports anchor on Fox 5 and eventually, taking the leap as the play by play voice of the local NBA basketball team. We chat about what he wanted to be vs where he ended up, what would make him cringe if he listened to 'early Steve Buckhantz' broadcasts, and how to get over a low moment on a broadcast. Buck is an all-time great guy. You can listen to his podcast with his longtime broadcast partner Phil Chenier here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/on-the-road-with-buck-phil/id1511197348 (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/on-the-road-with-buck-phil/id1511197348) Steve is also really involved with some wonderful charity work including the St. Jude Open to benefit St. Jude Hospital: https://www.stjude.org/get-involved/find-an-event/dinners-and-galas/st-jude-open.html (https://www.stjude.org/get-involved/find-an-event/dinners-and-galas/st-jude-open.html) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy Support this podcast

Joining me in the huddle this week is the Duo of Steve Buckhantz and Phil Chenier. They have recently started reliving some of the good ol' days on a new podcast they started. On the Road with Buck and Phil is a relaxing trip down memory lane. I would encourage any longtime fan to check it out! Phil and Steve talk to me about growing up and how they fell in love with sports. Steve was the longtime Washington Wizards play-by-play announcer and a Washington-area sports broadcaster who grew up in Virginia and went to James Madison University. Phil Chenier is a former professional basketball player, a guard in the NBA for ten seasons. Born and raised in Berkeley, California, Chenier graduated from Berkeley High School and played college basketball at the University of California in Berkeley. He was also a television sports broadcaster for the NBA's Washington Wizards. Buckhantz and Chenier were the familiar faces and voices on Bullets and Wizards broadcasts from 1997 until 2017 when NBC Sports Washington announced Chenier would not return as the team's primary in-game analyst, a role he had for 33 years. While Chenier no longer calls games, he contributes to NBCSW's Wizards coverage. Buckhantz did play-by-play for several college basketball games last season and was working as the public address announcer for the XFL's D.C. Defenders when the novel Coronavirus pandemic postponed the season and ultimately caused the league to fold. The friendship they have created over years of broadcasting Wizards games pulled them together again to tell their many stories in their podcast. Being able to interview them together gives us a glimpse into their friendship and the incredible journey they enjoyed. Thanks, Steve and Phil

The newest installment in our ongoing series on 50-point games takes us to the late 60s and early 70s, a transformative period in NBA history and for 50-point games. Wilt Chamberlain’s scoring fades away, Jerry West bows out and new stars like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Rick Barry emerge. A new upstart pro basketball league (ABA) joins the fray and their inclusion of a 3-point line makes 50-point games easier than ever. During this period, the 50+ point club becomes less exclusive. Up to this point (1949-66), we’ve only had 18 players with 50+ in a game (169 times—116 by Wilt Chamberlain). All of the previous 50+ scorers were eventual Hall of Famers with the lone exception of 5-time All-Star Rudy LaRusso. In this time period though, we’ll have 35 new members of the club with only 21 of them eventually making it to the Hall of Fame. Overall from 1967-1974, we’ll see 84 50-point games overall with Barry leading the charge at 17, Kareem chipping in eight and Wilt still putting up 7 including a heroic final 50+ point game. From 1967-74, 1.06% of games featured a 50+ point game. In this episode we’ll spotlight some of the new scorers to emerge in this era including Larry Jones, Willie Reed, Louie Dampier, Elvin Hayes, Darel Carrier, Connie Hawkins, Mel Daniels, Lou Hudson, Billy Cunningham, Spencer Haywood, Roger Brown, John Brisk, Joe Caldwell, Walt Wesley, Dave Bing, Stew Johnson, Dan Issel, Steve “Snapper” Jones, Charlie Scott, Pete Maravich, Chet Walker, Zelmo Beaty, Tiny Archibald, Willie Wise, Larry Miller, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, George McGinnis, Phil Chenier, Geoff Petrie and John Havlicek. Jones being fired in favor of Dick Motta, falling to Moses Malone and the Rockets in 1977, Hayes getting sick of criticism, and the Bullets not drawing well at the box office. We also discuss the surprising 1978 championship run, adding Bobby Dandridge as one of the first major NBA free agents, how injuries took a toll on their depth, coming together in the playoffs and knocking out George Gervin's San Antonio Spurs and Julius Erving's Philadelphia 76ers, defeating the Seattle SuperSonics in a 7-game classic, and how the team brought a divided Washington together. We look at the followup in 1979, overcoming a 3-1 deficit to beat the Spurs again, and falling short in a rematch vs. the Sonics.
