The 1974 NFL Draft was historic in many ways. Ed 'Too Tall ' Jones was the first overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys and the first of many intriguing stories. Such as Randy Gradishar being taken by the Broncos with the 14th pick and 50 years later, being inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was one of 7 players who debuted in '74 that ended up enshrined in Canton... 5 of them by the Pittsburgh Steelers in what is considered the greatest draft in NFL history. And get this, not one of them was a quarterback. In fact, no QB's were taken in the first round... or the 2nd round... the first time since 1938 that had happened and only the 5th time ever. But who did get picked in the 15th round? That's right, there were 17 rounds in 1974 and the first pick in the 15th was Billy Johnson... you know him as Billy 'White Shoes' Johnson, the only member of the NFL's all-75th anniversary team not in the Hall... Joining us to talk about this incredible draft is longtime sports talk radio host Paul Jolovitz of WIP sports radio in Philadelphia. Jolly knows his football from half a century ago... and being from DC, he knows Bullets basketball as well. We'll talk about one of the greatest to ever don a Bullets uniform... the great Wes Unseld. Wes wasn't the biggest, but he may be the best to ever play for Washington. Jolly will talk about what it was like to attend Bullets playoff games in his youth when Wes and Elvin Hayes were winning 7 division titles in 10 seasons, culminating in their lone championship in 1978. Unseld and the NFL draft... a lot to talk about with a guy who talks a lot about sports for a living... on this weeks Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices.

Ein Gespräch mit dem Autor (Rowohlt Berlin) / "Die Projektoren" (S. The Washington Wizards replaced Wes Unseld Jr. as head coach, moving Unseld into a front office advisory role, and promoting lead assistant Brian Keefe to be interim head coach. When the team makes a big move, there's no one better to discuss it with than old friend and podcast partner Ben Becker. Ben and I have been talking and analyzing the Wizards for 20+ years now. This conversation is the latest edition of what a listener once described as what it might sound like if NPR had a show about the Washington Wizards. In this episode, we talk about Unseld, the challenge of rebuilding a franchise as decayed as the Wizards had become, and the long-term strategy the team's new leadership — Michael Winger, Will Dawkins, and Travis Schlenk — are pursuing as they attempt to resuscitate a long moribund franchise. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sowizards/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sowizards/support
Brian McCormick has coached at an array of levels in leagues around the world and has written books about basketball fundamentals, skills development, how to become a great shooter, running practices, and building an effective offensive system. I invited him on to discuss the unique challenges faced by Wes Unseld Jr. and his staff as they attempt to lead a team at step one of a total rebuild. We delved into the problems Jordan Poole is having as he tries to make the Washington Wizards "his" team, how Unseld and the assistant coaches can help him, and the delicate line they have to tread between correcting mistakes and expanding possibilities. We also talked about how coaches approach a rebuilding situation like the Wizards where the players know they're going to lose and that most of them won't be around in a few years when the team is ready to compete. Last, we touched on some ways outsiders can assess how good a job a coach is doing. This conversation expanded how I think about coaching and player development. Coaches have to balance an array of competing forces as they try to help their players improve and guide their team to wins. McCormick helped unpack what some of those competing forces are and what coaches to do to manage them. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sowizards/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sowizards/support
The Wizards opened up the 2023-24 season with a dud against Indiana, giving up 143 points. They followed that effort with a strong home-opening win against Memphis, with Corey Kispert being the focal point., Then, Unseld's squad took a step back in a blowout loss to Boston.

Washington Wizards head coach Wes Unseld, Jr. previews the 2023 season on Wizards Media Day. Unseld talks about modernizing the Wizards style of play, improving the "shot diet," and working with new executives Will Dawkins and Michael Winger.

#SoWizards hosts Kevin Broom and Ron Oakes-Cunningham have been nibbling at the edges of whether Wes Unseld Jr. is doing a good job as Wizards head coach, and in this episode they were joined by the great Troy Haliburton to take a big ol' bite of the question. The conversation was an unflinching diagnosis of how Unseld's leadership is coming up short, how he compares to his predecessors and competitors, how the Wizards organization is failing him as a rookie head coach, and what needs to happen for him to succeed. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sowizards/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sowizards/support
Wes Unseld was severely undersized for being an NBA center, standing at a height of only 6'6". Despite this, he reached league MVP while still in his rookie year and later became a five-time All-Star. Now in the Hall of Fame, Unseld overcame long odds to become one of the best players in NBA history. Is it bad form to say your own podcast has a great episode? If so, I'm the Jamaal Wilkes of podcasting. Here's a YouTube link to his shot (and some other "bad form" shooters) for the youngs in the audience. In this episode, Mark Schindler, a contributor at Basketball News, joined Ron and Kevin to discuss a whole heap of basketball topics. Mark is an excellent basketball writers and a must read for those who want insight into the NBA. He has a specialty of sorts for the Indiana Pacers, but he covers the entire league with a focus on player development and progression, while also keeping up with college scouting and eyeing the NBA Draft. Give him a follow him on Twitter @MSchindlerNBA. We hit on an array of topics, including the Pacers, G-League superstar Terry Taylor (the 6-5 "big"), Tyrese Haliburton, and just how big an a-hole is Indy coach Rick Carlisle. We also talked Wizards, including whether Wes Unseld Jr. is doing a good job, the relative merits of the players on the Wizards roster, and whether the team should be so gung ho about giving Bradley Beal a supermax contract. This is a great episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sowizards/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sowizards/support
Recorded before the debaculous 29-point loss to Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics, Kevin Broom and Ron Oakes-Cunningham batted around the issue of whether Wes Unseld Jr. and his staff are doing a good job. It's been taken as a given by many Wizards fans and analysts that Unseld is good and a significant upgrade from Scott Brooks. But what if he's not? What if the team isn't being well coached? How could outsiders tell the difference? Would we look to the team's 13-21 record since the 10-3 start? The negative scoring differential? The middle of the pack offense and a bottom tier defense? How about the lack of energy and urgency from a team in the midst of playing every other day during a lengthy home stand? A current USAF, second lieutenant serving as the Equal Opportunity Director for the Kentucky Air National Guard, leading a Tiger Team for cultivating diversity and The Community Action Team Leader, one would think Shonda Unseld has enough on her plate. But she has a passion for community improvement and travel, she created a travel company that focuses on group travel so others can travel, serve, inspire. Her business model is unique and I loved listening to her talk about her journey so candidly. #Justgo #Passportsmatter It is my great pleasure to introduce a rising star in the ranks and in the world making a global impact.
To celebrate the end of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week for 2020, I brought on my husband Ben to discuss how NFP has impacted our relationship. We review a couple of research studies that have looked at how natural family planning affects marriages and we comment on our own experiences (yes, that includes our sex life - I promise we do not get graphic).NFP has improved our relationship overall but it does not come without its challenges. Periodic abstinence is not always easy. But, because of natural family planning, our communication has improved and our respect for one another has increased. NFP has helped me know my body better and to grow closer to God.Thank you to my amazing husband for being willing to be my guest and talking openly and honestly about intimate topics! The take-aways:-There are positive and negative aspects of natural family planning-Some positive aspects include: increased and deeper communication, improved knowledge of your (or your spouse’s) body, positive effects on faith life-Some negative aspects include: frustrations and anger, strained sexual relationship, periodic abstinence-Overall, the majority of couples who use NFP find more benefit than harm to their relationship-My belief is your marriage will be blessed when you are doing what you know God wants you to do in your relationshipI will be hosting a virtual workshop called “Know Your Body with Natural Family Planning” on Tues 8/18/20 at 7:30pm CST. PHIL CHENIER and WES UNSELD were teammates and friends for nearly a half-century until Unseld's death on June 2 at age 74. Chenier shares his unique perspective on Unseld, calling him a leader, "the ultimate team player," well-respected, always "calm and confident" before critical games. He poignantly tells of Unseld's year-long hospitalization and his dying alone because of coronavirus restrictions. "I will miss his laugh," Chenier says. "I will miss his smile."
"Reiseberichte", so nannte Siegfried Unseld Berichte über seine Gespräche als Suhrkamp-Verleger. Gespräche mit Autor*innen und Verleger*innen-Kollegen aus aller Welt. 1500 dieser Texte sind bis zu seinem Tod 2002 entstanden. Eigentlich den Verlagsmitarbeitern vorbehalten sind die "Reiseberichte" jetzt erstmals auch als ausgewählte Sammlung erschienen. Eine Rezension von Jörg Magenau.
Former University of Louisville men's basketball players Butch Beard, Wade Houston and Jerry King join “Welcome to the Ville” for a tribute to the late Wes Unseld. Unseld, a member of the University of Louisville and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, passed away earlier this month at the age of 74. Unseld's number 31 is one of just four retired numbers in UofL history. In three seasons at UofL (1965-68), he amassed 1,686 points (11th at UofL) and 1,551 rebounds (2nd at UofL). A consensus All-American during his junior and senior years, Unseld is one of only five Cardinal players to pull down over 1,000 rebounds in his career. A native of Louisville who graduated from Seneca High School, he began his senior season with a 45-point effort against Georgetown College, a UofL single-game scoring record that stands today.
On this edition of The Sports King Show, we speak with former Washington Bullets World Champion Guard/Forward Kevin Grevey on the loss of former teammate Wes Unseld. Grevey talks about the impact Unseld had on everyone both on and off the court. We also discuss breaking sports news of the day. In Hour Two we discuss the NFL and the overall race relations issue and what's being done or not done to improve things. We talk about the breaking news that the NBA will come with a 22 team format. We discuss how the former may look and who may have the inside track to winning the NBA Championship. The Sports King Show airs Monday-Friday 10am-12 Noon est www.sportskingradio.com
On this edition of The Sports King Show, we welcome back longtime broadcaster Mike Neville who joins me to discuss the overall status of major sports leagues and when they might return. We discuss the breaking news of the passing of former Washington Bullets Center Wes Unseld at age 74. Unseld was a dominant rebounder and key cog in the Washington Bullets (now Wizards) only World Championship in 1978. We then talk about the Major League Baseball impasse and how the NHL, NFL, and College Football seasons may or may not return. We look into how long the ramp-up times may be for the various leagues and discuss the economic impacts for seasons without fans in the stands and if its a viable option overall. In Hour Two I answer questions and talk further about QB Cam Newton and the possibility of him joining the Redskins as a last-minute addition for the 2020 season. I also talk about my Super Bowl Prediction for 2020 and who will hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end. I talk about the team who will be the biggest surprise in the NFL. I also give my opinion on the first coach who will be fired and the Dak Prescott contract situation in Dallas. I close it out with a look at the Atlanta Falcons who have saved Head Coach Dan Quinn's job for now but I discuss how they have not recovered as a franchise since blowing a 28-3 lead late in the Super Bowl soul-crushing loss to the New England Patriots in dramatic fashion. We look at the Washington Bullets, winners of the 1978 NBA championship and three-time NBA Finalists with Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes, in the latest edition of Over and Back's Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. Author Chris Elzey joins Jason Mann in discussing why the Bullets didn't excite many NBA fans during the late 1970s despite their success and having two top 50 all-time players, the Baltimore Bullets' 1971 Finals appearance with Unseld and Earl Monroe and breakup, acquiring Hayes from Houston, the move from Baltimore to the D.C. area, what made Hayes and Unseld so special, how shooting guard Phil Chenier stood out, the 1975 run to the NBA Finals with a well-balanced squad, classic playoff series vs. the Buffalo Braves and Boston Celtics, the surprising four-game sweep at the hands of Rick Barry's Golden State Warriors, adding Dave Bing in 1976, falling to the Cavaliers in the Miracle of Richfield, K.C. Jones being fired in favor of Dick Motta, falling to Moses Malone and the Rockets in 1977, Hayes getting sick of criticism, and the Bullets not drawing well at the box office. We also discuss the surprising 1978 championship run, adding Bobby Dandridge as one of the first major NBA free agents, how injuries took a toll on their depth, coming together in the playoffs and knocking out George Gervin's San Antonio Spurs and Julius Erving's Philadelphia 76ers, defeating the Seattle SuperSonics in a 7-game classic, and how the team brought a divided Washington together. We look at the followup in 1979, overcoming a 3-1 deficit to beat the Spurs again, and falling short in a rematch vs. the Sonics. We also learned about a piece of AIDS history we never knew before: This week on Entertainment Tonight, model Kathy Ireland revealed that Dame Elizabeth Taylor ran what was essentially an underground drug ring and safe house to help HIV positive people. At the time, healthcare for AIDS patients was abysmal, and lifesaving drugs had to be smuggled into the country illegally. And Jaison told us about a great panel discussion featuring Norman Lear, the pioneering TV producer behind socially-progressive shows like "All in the Family," "Good Times," "The Jeffersons," and more. Lear said TV is still a place where social norms can be challenged and stereotypes can be upended. New shows like "Black-ish" have picked up where the groundbreaking shows of Lear's heyday left off. But it's not just the content of TV shows that influence culture, for better or worse. The advertisements that come between show segments don't always just push products. They can also present certain mindsets about gender, race, sexuality and other values. "You virtually never see men in any kind of commercial cleaning up their home, or even their office space," Kaila notes. "This is how advertising basically facilitates ideas of misogyny and patriarchy." But it's not just women who are maligned by this approach — the same companies generally portray men as clueless and helpless in the domestic sphere, when in reality, Kaila notes, "A grown man knows how to do his laundry." Our feature interview this week also explores the social and economical forces that may hold men down — and how cities around the country are trying to mitigate those forces. This week, the Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA) released its first-ever Black Male Achievement City Index. The index measures factors such as whether a city has philanthropic groups and leadership initiatives focused on helping black men and boys succeed. Louisville scored 51 out of a possible 100 points, putting us around the middle of the top 50 cities. Daryle Unseld, senior community manager for Metro United Way, joined us to talk about the local results, He said the Louisville numbers reflect national trends, and he's happy with the results. “I think it’s a great start,” Unseld said. “I think we have the urgency and the opportunity to do more. While we can celebrate some successes, I think we also need to be cognizant that we have a lot of work to do.” He laid out some of the initiatives that are happening around Louisville to improve. To understand the wider national context of the study, we spoke to Rashid Shabazz, a program officer with CBMA. He says while black men do face disparities from employment, education, and policing throughout the country, this particular report focuses on the ways cities are trying to help. “We want to spotlight these initiatives and efforts that are moving forward in the midst of the peril and the challenge that folks are facing,” he said. “These are glimmers of hope.”
In episode 022 of the Pixar Post Podcast we discuss: THE BLUE UMBRELLA We discuss the omission of The Blue Umbrella from the Animated Shorts nomination category of the 2014 Academy Awards. We provide our candid reactions to the news and compare The Blue Umbrella to the remaining ten short films. Additionally, we read comments from our readers with their reactions to the news as well. FOLLOW UP FROM EPISODE 021 We also follow up from an earlier discussion in Episode 021 where we interviewed Toy Story of Terror, Supervising Animator, Michal Makarewicz. During the interview Michal answered one of our reader's questions and elaborated on the animation dailies. Thanks to our reader and friend, Jeff from This Day in Pixar, he noted that Craig Good (longtime Pixarian) had started a blog and specifically mentioned the animation dailies as well. We dig into Craig's article and pull out some great advice for people looking to enter animation - or any other field frankly...it's about making the work better, not taking feedback personally. We then wrap up with a open discussion about our own personal experience taking feedback too personally and explained how the turned out in the end. Have you experienced a moment of frustration when you received feedback that you weren't hoping for or expecting on your project? How did you rally? Did you find the work to be better in the long run? Let us know in the comments below or join in the conversation on the Pixar Post Forum. Pixar Post - T.J. & Julie

Our conversation with The Blue Umbrella director Saschka Unseld
Our conversation with the director behind The Blue Umbrella, the short that plays before Pixar's Monsters University.
In episode 007 of the Pixar Post Podcast we discuss: A brief discussion about the announcement of the Ratatouille ride in Disney Land Paris. A brief discussion of the Toy Story: Smash It! iOS game. Our exclusive interview with The Blue Umbrella director, Saschka Unseld - in fact, we're premiering the interview in it's entirety in our podcast - although we will have a full transcription posted to the site in the next few days (along with our review of the short film). Because we were so anxious to share the extremely insightful interview with Saschka, our initial topics of the podcast only last about two-to-three minutes. In the interview we discuss: How much we loved the short film - we saw it in it's entirety today. His photography and it's simplistic beauty. The idea behind the film and how it came to be. The technology behind the short, along with technological challenges. The astounding natural camera work that added to the realism. Some of the character's names - yup, there's a character named Gutsy (spelling may be incorrect)! The process of creating the sounds in the short. Finally, we asked Saschka about how Jon Brion and Sarah Jaffe were selected to work on the soundtrack. Wow, what an interview - anytime we can gain such amazing insight into the process of making a film, we're blown away. Additionally, it doesn't hurt that Saschka was so easy to talk to - we jumped right in like we were sitting in a coffee shop having a casual conversation. Thank you to Saschka, the entire The Blue Umbrella team and Pixar for their magnificent short and for letting us talk about it with them. Pixar Post - T.J. & Julie info@pixarpost.com
