Today we'll hear from Dave Bing, the fiddle-playing brother of the old-time band, The Bing Brothers. We interviewed Mike Bing, the mandolin-playing brother, on an earlier podcast episode. But today, we focus on Dave. Like all the musicians who've played for the story sessions, Dave came to the Opera House to bow a little for us and tell stories. Still, Dave has such an immense library of tunes stored in his mind that we did have to take a few breaks — So bear with us as we chat both on stage and off with Dave in this story session. Dave shares tales of the old-time music family, the Hammons, and we chat about how Irish and Scottish tunes have influenced his playing and the dynamic tradition of passing down tunes in person. Our conversation wanders, much like the Williams River, which lured Dave's father to Pocahontas country when Dave was just three years old. The three boys and their dad would camp on the Williams, known for trout fishing. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/story-sessions/support

Trevor lives in Pocahontas Co. West Virginia where he continues to pass on the “old-time music” and traditions of the famous Hammons Family. He is the great-grandson of musician, Lee Hammons. Trevor is an award-winning banjo and fiddle player. He started lessons when he was eight years old with Pam Lund of Woodrow. She played with the Hammons and learned from them in the '70s. Trevor has played with bands previously but finds the stories and history of this music need to be presented in a different way, which shows the importance of the tradition and what it really means. He has a show that explains this and wonderful music to accompany and showcase his legacy. He mastered the banjo, playing in the Appalachian Old-Time technique familiar to his great-Grandfather Lee and his friends during the 1800s and early 1900s. As a youth, Trevor took many awards for adult categories with his unique style and musical abilities, playing an eerie and haunting style as performed by his Great-grandfather Lee. He has placed in Vandalia, Clifftop, Galax, VA, Monterey, VA, and more! If you love the banjo and old-time music you must catch him playing! Only a few years ago, Trevor picked up the fiddle and began playing, again placing in contests in WV and surrounding states. He continues to learn from great musicians such as Pam Lund, Dave Bing, Henry Barnes, and John Blissard on the fiddle. He has studied with Tim Bing, Ron Mullennex, Dwight Diller, and so many more wonderful musicians. Trevor teaches music lessons at the Pocahontas Co. Library and Marlinton Wellness Center. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/story-sessions/support
A member of the NBA's 75 List, Dave Bing is definitely one of the greatest NBA players of all time. A contemporary of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, he was an incredible scorer and team player. Even after retirement from basketball, he started a legitimate steel processing company and became an award-winning businessman. Despite all of this, however, he is so rarely talked about today. In hopes of figuring out why, Rick investigates just what led to him being so forgotten as he explores the fascinating story of Dave Bing. Pour aller plus loin : Hall of Famer Bob Lanier was more than just two big feet What Happened to Former No. 1 Overall Pick and Pistons Great Bob Lanier? With the start of the Major League Baseball season around the corner, Castiglione discusses the challenges of calling games during the pandemic, how he became passionate about sports play-by-play and how Syracuse University and WAER helped him find his voice. He also recalls the time he broadcast a triple overtime basketball game between Jim Boeheim ’66, G’73, Dave Bing ’66 and Syracuse vs. Colgate and shares his advice for aspiring broadcasters.

The NBA is now a 365-day league and it's never been more present in pop culture. From Kevin Durant's burner accounts to LeBron taking his talents anywhere to trusting the Process, the NBA is becoming a pop culture requirement. At the same time, sports can have gatekeepers that make it insular and frustrating for people who aren't die hard fans. We’re here to prove that basketball is entertaining to follow for all fans, whether you’re actively watching the games or not.
We discuss more fantastic early round Game 7s: -Chet Walker and the 1974 Chicago Bulls taking on the Dave Bing, Bob Lanier and the Detroit Pistons. -Kevin Johnson puts up 46 points and Charles Barkley's plays his "last game" in the NBA (hint: it wasn't) as Mario Ellie hits a game-winner for Hakeem Olajuwon and the 1995 Houston Rockets. -Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and the Dallas Mavericks finally getting the Spurs monkey off their back in 2006 as they battle with, who else, Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli. -Plus as an added bonus, we took a not-so-retro look at the 2015 Los Angeles Clippers/San Antonio Spurs Game 7 including a gutsy performance from Chris Paul, Blake Griffin's rapid maturation and the ageless wonder Tim Duncan.Original airdate: 5/7/15

The newest installment in our ongoing series on 50-point games takes us to the late 60s and early 70s, a transformative period in NBA history and for 50-point games. Wilt Chamberlain’s scoring fades away, Jerry West bows out and new stars like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Rick Barry emerge. A new upstart pro basketball league (ABA) joins the fray and their inclusion of a 3-point line makes 50-point games easier than ever. During this period, the 50+ point club becomes less exclusive. Up to this point (1949-66), we’ve only had 18 players with 50+ in a game (169 times—116 by Wilt Chamberlain). All of the previous 50+ scorers were eventual Hall of Famers with the lone exception of 5-time All-Star Rudy LaRusso. In this time period though, we’ll have 35 new members of the club with only 21 of them eventually making it to the Hall of Fame. Overall from 1967-1974, we’ll see 84 50-point games overall with Barry leading the charge at 17, Kareem chipping in eight and Wilt still putting up 7 including a heroic final 50+ point game. From 1967-74, 1.06% of games featured a 50+ point game. In this episode we’ll spotlight some of the new scorers to emerge in this era including Larry Jones, Willie Reed, Louie Dampier, Elvin Hayes, Darel Carrier, Connie Hawkins, Mel Daniels, Lou Hudson, Billy Cunningham, Spencer Haywood, Roger Brown, John Brisk, Joe Caldwell, Walt Wesley, Dave Bing, Stew Johnson, Dan Issel, Steve “Snapper” Jones, Charlie Scott, Pete Maravich, Chet Walker, Zelmo Beaty, Tiny Archibald, Willie Wise, Larry Miller, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, George McGinnis, Phil Chenier, Geoff Petrie and John Havlicek. Ignite 2 Impact Podcast - Raise up and Inspire the Next Generation of Leaders
Besides being an American retired Hall of Fame basketball player, Dave Bing has many other major accomplishments. He's run a steel company where he became the top minority supplier to the the auto industry and later was elected Mayor of the City of Detroit. But after all that, this show discusses the thing he is most proud of - and the reason why he leaps out of bed in the morning excited about life and the impact he can make in the lives of young men. BINGO! This show will give a picture of what the young Dave Bing was all about and what makes him the leader he is today. (This is just part 1) Dave Bing has uniquely claimed success in three distinct arenas; professional sports, business and politics. Dave Bing was elected the 62nd Mayor of the City of Detroit in May 2009. A native of Washington, D.C., Bing is a graduate of Syracuse University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics, and was later bestowed an honorary Doctorate of Laws in 2006. He was also a standout basketball player in both high school and college. Dave Bing came to Detroit in 1966 when he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons as their #1 pick. Voted one of the top 50 basketball players of all time, Bing was inducted into the Michigan Hall of Fame in 1984, and into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1990. Bing turned his winning strategies from the basketball court to the boardroom as the founder of an automotive supply corporation, The Bing Group in 1980, where he served as President and Chairman until April 2009. Within a decade, The Bing Group was recognized as one of the nation’s top Minority-Owned Companies by Black Enterprise. Answering yet another call to serve, Bing decided to run for Mayor to help rebuild a city that he has loved and been a part of for more than 40 years. Proving that the basics of good performance, integrity and business can be applied to any area or industry, Bing has brought a renewed sense of trust and hope to the City of Detroit. Bing’s latest challenge is the establishing the Bing Youth Institute whose mission is to create a meaningful mentoring experience to help unleash the unlimited potential in young men of color. www.BingYouthInstitute.org See show notes at www.DrGenevaSpeaks.com Follow our hashtag #ignite2impact Please share this podcast, subscribe in iTunes and leave a review

Author Chris Elzey joins Jason Mann in discussing why the Bullets didn't excite many NBA fans during the late 1970s despite their success and having two top 50 all-time players, the Baltimore Bullets' 1971 Finals appearance with Unseld and Earl Monroe and breakup, acquiring Hayes from Houston, the move from Baltimore to the D.C. area, what made Hayes and Unseld so special, how shooting guard Phil Chenier stood out, the 1975 run to the NBA Finals with a well-balanced squad, classic playoff series vs. the Buffalo Braves and Boston Celtics, the surprising four-game sweep at the hands of Rick Barry's Golden State Warriors, adding Dave Bing in 1976, falling to the Cavaliers in the Miracle of Richfield, K.C. Jones being fired in favor of Dick Motta, falling to Moses Malone and the Rockets in 1977, Hayes getting sick of criticism, and the Bullets not drawing well at the box office. We also discuss the surprising 1978 championship run, adding Bobby Dandridge as one of the first major NBA free agents, how injuries took a toll on their depth, coming together in the playoffs and knocking out George Gervin's San Antonio Spurs and Julius Erving's Philadelphia 76ers, defeating the Seattle SuperSonics in a 7-game classic, and how the team brought a divided Washington together. We look at the followup in 1979, overcoming a 3-1 deficit to beat the Spurs again, and falling short in a rematch vs. the Sonics. From 1984 to 1993, NBA All-Star Weekend featured the NBA All-Star Legends Game/Legends Classic/Old Timers Game, an exhibition game between the NBA's aging elite. We look at Wilt Chamberlain’s time in the ABA as coach of the San Diego Conquistadors in the latest episode in Over and Back’s Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. We discuss how Chamberlain, fresh off leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the 1972 title and 1973 Finals, jumped to the ABA as a player-coach but was unable to play because of contract issues and what a difference he might have made had he been able to play in the league. We talk about the San Diego Q’s infamous marketing campaign of “the tallest coach in the smallest arena,” how much actual coaching Chamberlain did, how Wilt related to the Q’s players (including Caldwell Jones, Bo Lamar, Gene Moore, Stew Johnson, Red Robbins, Travis Grant, and Flynn Robinson), celebrities visiting San Diego’s practice, a confrontation involving Chamberlain and Indiana’s Mel Daniels, the ABA commissioner asking Wilt not to wear sandals, and the best Wilt in the ABA stories. We also talk about other NBA stars who jumped to the ABA, including Billy Cunningham and Joe Caldwell to the Carolina Cougars, and Dave Bing’s near-jump to the Virginia, and speculate if there were truly an NBA stars who could have tipped the scales in the war between the two leagues, such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, John Havlicek, Pete Maravich or Earl Monroe.
