This week on the Artist Academy Podcast is an interview with artist John Foster, all about his lifelong career in custom lettering, pinstriping, and graphic design. I love chatting with artists who have lived through decades of the evolving art industry because they offer a completely different perspective compared to those who are just starting out. The evolution required to survive in this industry demands an open mind, constant learning, and the ability to adapt. There are so many differences between today's art world and that of 20+ years ago, and John has both lived through and thrived in those changes. We discuss how he got his start as an employee, eventually transitioned to being his own boss, and moved across multiple states—even to Europe—as a freelance artist. Let me know your thoughts on this interview with John Foster!

My guest for this episode of the Guest Friends podcast is my nephew - and hands-on renaissance man: Justin Stilson. Justin and his wife Brittany live just outside of Bay City, Michigan. Having grown up in a family that valued working with their hands, Justin experienced everything from construction work, to restoring muscle cars, to tending to goats, to trying out crafts like scrapbooking. With a willingness to learn new things and to put in the hard work, it's not a big surprise then that he eventually took the leap into entrepreneurship by starting his own business: Stilson Sign & Custom. I met up with Justin in his home/workshop to discuss how he's become a devoted old-world artisan with pinstriping and antique sign painting. Amongst other insights, Justin shares why the D.I.Y. ethic is just a way of life (especially when your family never called a repairman); how his toolbox involuntarily became his first pinstriping canvas; and why ambition is the ultimate call-to-action. Southern California was ground zero for customizing cars. After WWII, GIs returned home to California and needed to replace the dangers of war with a suitable adrenaline substitute. They began fixing up old jalopies and racing them out in the Mojave Desert. This trend led into customizing street cars too--and the hot rod era was born. "Pin-striping" was created as a way to set off your car, and a guy named Von Dutch (Kenny Howard) became THE guy for pin-striping in the Los Angeles area during the 1950s. My father took his friend's Chevy down to Von Dutch in 1956 for some striping. This is a fun show on his story and what it was like to be there when car custom history was in the making.
