Tarra Warnes and her husband once owned two Yugos. The sub-compact three-door hatchback and two-door convertible are often cited as the worst vehicles in history. The Yugo enthusiast family's idea was to use one vehicle to provide parts for its counterpart's restoration as a race car. The outcome isn't as relevant as the irony of Warnes telling the tale. She's vice president of creative strategy at Hagerty. It's the insurance company, marketplace, magazine, website publisher and automotive event organizer focusing on classic cars and their owners. Tarra is our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I interview Warnes about Hagerty's advancement from a small company to its current status with more than 1,700 employees. The company began in 1984. Husband and wife Frank and Louise Hagerty couldn't find satisfactory insurance coverage for their wooden boats, so their new Michigan company did. Insurance for cars and other vehicles followed. The couple's son McKeel Hagerty became CEO in 2000. "We started as a niche insurance company; it was built by people who love cars and it was built for people who love cars," said Warnes, a 15-year employee. "We have grown now in 40 years to insure about 2.4 million vehicles and we are a community and hub for millions of classic car lovers." From its insurance beginnings, Hagerty's magazine, the company reports, has 815,000 print subscribers and a "robust" online presence with social media channels. Hagerty is also the "steward" for multiple automotive events. The brand's most recent offering is Marketplace where consumers can buy and sell vehicles. Live auctions are also held via Hagerty's relationship with Broad Arrow Auctions. The company also owns the Greenwich Concours d'Elégance, Concours d'Elegance of America and the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. It also established MotorsportReg.com and Hagerty Garage. The magazine's success has prompted substantially increased public brand awareness. The publication debuted nearly 25 years ago, but it was renamed Hagerty Drivers Club Magazine in 2020 and it's part of member benefits. It's also available as a stand-alone subscription. Published six times per year, the country's largest automotive publication has a lifestyle slant. It's largely absent of engine performance nuances, gear ratio analyses and other automotive complexities. Columnists include renowned collector and entertainer Jay Leno and Wayne Carini, the car restorer and television personality whose prominence arrived with the 2008 debut of the documentary series "Chasing Classic Cars." Warnes' responsibilities encompass marketing the Hagerty brand. The company's approach is far removed from heavy-handedness. "We are not trying to hit people over the head with direct marketing or product all the time," she said. "I think that really great brands can create really compelling content that people enjoy seeing and that bring a smile to their face, that puts a tear in their eyes and that sort of connects with them on an emotional level." Recent article headlines provide ideal examples: "Tattoo artist's '56 Bel Air Sport Sedan is a rolling marquee," "This restored 1969 Ford Torino is staying in the family," and "Blind at 58, one man chose to keep loving life—and his classic Plymouth." Hagerty's year-long anniversary campaign includes a television commercial, broadcast on various networks, titled "Keepers of the Flame." It's "to signal to the automotive world that Hagerty has 'plenty left in the tank' for the next 40 years." What vehicles qualify is subjective. The Warnes sold their Yugos when they moved and downsized their garage space. They no longer own a classic, but may have a future purchase. Tarra Warnes drives a red Volkswagen Jetta turbo diesel wagon. But she desires a car from her childhood, a station wagon from the mid-1980s or a minivan from the early 1990s.

With a lifetime of experience in automobile restoration under his belt, master car restorer Wayne Carini has a resume that includes body and paint work on rare car collections owned by the likes of David Letterman, tennis great Ivan Lendl and the DuPont family. He's been featured in the New York Times as well as numerous automobile magazines, and starred in two one-hour television specials. Now, Chasing Classic Cars gives viewers a true insider's look into Wayne's inner circle as he embarks on his personal mission to uncover the world's most rare and exotic cars. Filmed entirely in high definition, Chasing Classic Cars welcomes you into the elite club of car restorers and collectors as Wayne buys, restores and sells vintage rides, and the owners of the most exclusive and secret garages open up their doors only to Wayne. Wayne's passion for cars started when he was a child, working alongside his father on such classics as Duesenbergs, Lincolns, Packards and Ford Model As. Then, at just 9 years of age, he experienced a life altering event: he went for a ride in his first Ferrari, a 1960 Rosso Chiaro 250 SWB to be exact. Wayne has been the owner and operator of three companies in Portland, Conn.: F40 Motorsports , Continental Auto Ltd. and Carini Carozzeria. F40 Motorsports buys and sells vintage and classic automobiles. Continental Auto Ltd. is a collision shop specializing in high-end and exotic automobile repair. Carini Carozzeria is the restoration shop where Wayne spends most of his time. And while Wayne loves restoring cars to perfection, his personal preference is for unrestored, original cars. Often shown in the elite "preservation class" at concourses nationwide, these increasingly rare cars are the focus of Wayne's private collection.

Then it's on to the guy's anticipation for the upcoming Kissimmee auction with John detailing his excitement for the television move to MotorTrend. Then in Segment 2, Matt is on the line with Wayne Carini, automotive personality, author and host of ‘Chasing Classic Cars'. The conversation covers a ton; from hearing where Wayne's automotive interest came from, recollections of his most surprising barn finds and what it's like to drive his early 1900s pair of electric vehicles. Wrapping up, the discussion shifts gears to discuss the 1951 Hirohata Mercury custom crossing the Kissimmee auction block. Wayne is helping to represent the car and gives insight into why the vehicle is so significant and perhaps one of the most beautiful cars ever created.

With the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals right around the corner, On the Move hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman want to dive into all the last-minute details, but before they do, there's a ton of big car news. First up is a mention of Mecum's final auction of 2021, taking place December 2-4 in Kansas City. Then it's on to big television news with the announcement that starting with the world's largest collector car auction this January in Kissimmee, Florida, Mecum will be covered on MotorTrend TV and its MotorTrend+ app. From there, the guys turn their attention to the hot action at the recent SEMA show in Las Vegas. They discuss builds and creations that stood out including a Ford Bronco Sport mimicking the iconic Big Oly, a wild third-generation Camaro built by the Hoonigan crew and a potentially game-changing 1948 Chevrolet Pickup powered by hydrogen. Wrapping up the first half of this week's episode, the guys chat about some upcoming events they'll be attending, including the closing of the famed Barris Kustom shop in North Hollywood and the Daytona Turkey Rod Run. In the second half this week's On The Move, Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Managing Member Bob Ashton joins the show, giving listeners a final look at preparations for the stellar event set for November 20-21 in Rosemont, Illinois. Bob runs down some of the featured displays and guest vehicle invitationals, some of the celebratory appearances including Wayne Carini and Courtney Hansen, and even a tease of a special panel moderated by John that will be showcasing some of the up-and-coming next generation of auto enthusiasts.
Join motorcycle collector and host of Chasing Classic Cars, Wayne Carini, and the Barber Museum's Executive Director, Jeff Ray, as they pick five very different motorcycles from Barber Museum storage areas and talk about why the museum has them, their significance, and plans for the future.
The Mecum October Takeover is in full swing with two live auctions in the books and the third on the horizon. There's lots to discuss about the recent Chattanooga auction, but before diving in, On the Move hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman have quite a bit of car news to share. John gives his full report from the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada, where he learned the ins and outs of piloting the C8 Corvette and was able to push the car to near its limits. Meanwhile, Matt also has impressions to share on the Chattanooga Motorcar Festival, which took place in concert with Mecum's auction. Both Matt and John were nearly shocked by a Toyota SR5 truck that crossed the block and brought more than six figures. The pair go into the details, pulling out the pop culture reference that helped it bring top dollar. From there, it's on to discussion of Ford's tease of the upcoming off-road focused Bronco Everglades and Acura's hints of the upcoming Integra hatchback sedan. Then, John shares what he thinks will be the biggest bit of October car news: the reveal of the 2023 Corvette C8 Z06, set to debut October 26. Up next, Matt is joined by Chattanooga Motorcar Festival Concours Director Ken Gross. The three-day automotive celebration took place concurrently with the Mecum auction and featured everything from competitive racing and scenic road rallies to evening street fairs full of live music. Top automotive personalities were on-site including Ray Evernham, Linda Vaughn, Tanner Foust, Wayne Carini and Brian Redman. It all culminated in a Sunday Concours d'Elegance, the focus of Matt and Ken's discussion. Ken shares some of the behind the scenes planning and intentionality that went into producing the event, while Matt also wants to find out about the high level judging at the event and how a Ferrari 275 came to be crowned Best of Show. From there, Ken changes gears to discuss another historic vehicle he's connected with: the 1951 Bob Hirohata Mercury set to cross Mecum's Kissimmee auction block in January. Ken shares his earliest memories of the vehicle and why the custom design work that went into it decades ago by famed brothers Sam and George Barris has truly stood the test of time.

Phil the producer hates taking pictures, and complains every time there's a photoshoot at the station. His engagement photoshoot is this weekend, so Chaz and AJ had the Tribe call in some advice for him. (0:00) Bill Jacquemin is the only weather guy Chaz and AJ heard last week, that correctly predicted Henri not being such a big deal. They invited him on this morning to explain what he did differently from everyone else. (16:08) In Dumb Ass News, Chaz and AJ had planned to play more songs performed on the rubber chicken, but instead an old clip of Chaz getting his prostate checked wound up dominating the segment. (30:37) Wayne Carini of Chasing Classic Cars was on the phone with Chaz and AJ to talk about his time out at the Bonneville Salt Flats for Speed Week, and the iconic custom car he recently acquired. (35:40) Joey Melotti was playing with Barry Manilow this past weekend at the concert in Central Park, when the whole show was interrupted and dispersed because of weather. Chaz and AJ asked him how much the guys on stage knew before the announcement was made, since everything seemed to be very confusing. (56:05) Photo Credit: Getty Images/Ryan McVay/The Image Bank

The Wayne Carini Passion Wayne's passion for cars started when he was a child, working alongside his father on such classics as Duesenbergs, Lincolns, Packards and Ford Model As. Then, at just 9 years of age, he experienced a life altering event: he went for a ride in his first Ferrari, a 1960 Rosso Chiaro 250 SWB to be exact. Wayne was instantly bitten by the Ferrari bug and hooked for life. Automobiles have been Wayne's passion ever since. Wayne learned the art of Ferrari restoration from his mentor Francois Sicard -- a former Ferrari racing mechanic and widely considered to be the foremost Ferrari expert on the East Coast -- and his good friend Luigi Chinetti Jr., whose father Luigi Chinetti Sr. won the 1949 24 Hours of Le Mans race for Ferrari and opened the first Ferrari dealership in the country. Chasing Classic Cars With an emphasis and talent for Ferrari early on, Wayne has built a career of seeking out some of the worlds most rare vehicles of a by gone era, giving way to preservation and beauty for all to enjoy, and of course to buy! His lifetime of experience in automobile restoration under his belt, master car restorer Wayne Carini has a resume that includes body and paint work on rare car collections owned by the likes of David Letterman, tennis great Ivan Lendl and the DuPont family. Then comes Chasing Classic Cars, a U.S. television documentary series presented by Wayne, who owns F-40 Motorsports, who looks at classic cars from all eras, focusing on finding and getting cars running, with the option of restoration and a likely sale. The series shows the restoration and auction process, and not all projects are financially successful. It has featured cars which have not previously been shown in public for decades. Pay It Forward Wayne is also involved in and regularly attends many different car clubs and events to get young people involved in the car collector hobby. He believes that without young people's involvement, the car collector tradition will disappear. His latest passion is convincing families with special needs children to consider placing collector cars into a special needs trust with the hope that the cars will benefit the children in the future.

He worked with Troy Trepanier at Rad Rides by Troy for 5 years where he honed his talents. Andy and Ron built a 1940 Ford they titled Checkered Past and won the 2013 Ridler Award which was an incredible accomplishment given it was the first car out of their newly formed shop. Chasing Classic Cars is the only TV show I DVR. There is much to like about the show, from the celebration of American car culture, the design, to the history of the cars and the stories behind the chase. Wayne’s passion for what he does is also a big part of the show’s appeal. It’s fun to watch someone having so much fun! His projects are fascinating and his clients range from Jay Leno to Wall Street titans to local car king Herb Chambers. The guys in his shop have seeming worked there forever, and the show places a real emphasis on family. Wayne’s daughter has autism and I admire all the work he does to raise money for Autism Speaks. Wayne could not have been more kind or gracious with his time tonight. I hope to get to meet him next weekend at the New England International Auto Show at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in the Seaport District.
