Americana Podcast explores the artists and ideas shaping American roots music, focusing this episode on the genre-defying Steve Poltz. Poltz is celebrated for his originality, blending tradition with unpredictability in a career that spans decades. Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Southern California, he first gained widespread attention as the co-writer of Jewel's hit You Were Meant for Me. However, his true impact lies in his continual reinvention and subversion of Americana norms. His work reflects the folk tradition's emphasis on storytelling and community, while also embracing humor, vulnerability, and improvisation. Poltz serves as a creative link between the West Coast's DIY folk-punk movement and the broader narrative tradition of American roots music. This episode examines how his artistic approach challenges expectations and keeps audiences engaged. Listeners are also invited to watch a live performance of You Were Meant for Me with the Robert Earl Keen Band on YouTube. Steve Poltz is a… a.. what is he? In the man's own words, “I'm just a weirdo, a freak, a bon vivant, a rounder, a rabble rouser, a workaholic, a people pleaser, an idiot and a grateful kid who ran away and joined the circus.”Most of us know Poltz as one of the most charismatic live folksingers working today. Whether he's playing little club in Halifax, or trading verses with Jewel (whose hit song “You Were Made for Me” he co-wrote), or serenading Cayamo, Poltz is Poltz, full on and no exceptions. Hence the the superlative, announced each night, by the man himself:“This is the Greatest Show of My Life!”I shared a show with him once. Unsurprisingly, it was the same night I met Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. We became friends. Weird things happen when Poltz is around.Besides Jewel, the East Nashville-based folksinger has cuts with dozens of artists — Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Deer Tick, Sierra Hull, Nicki Bluhm among them — as well as a collaboration with the Wood Brothers on his critically-acclaimed record Stardust and Satellites. We talk about early years in the California folk rock scene. Hilarity ensues. Steve recounts what a typical show at the Belly Up was like during the Rugburns' heyday. Destroying stuff, making memories for everyone in the house except himself, since he was wasted. But we also explored more sensitive territory. Steve got clean more than fifteen years ago, after suffering a stroke onstage. We talk alot about that time, the before and after. I asked him how his motivations changed when he got clean. His answer is worth the listen alone. One thing about Steve Poltz is that he is better than just about anybody I know at making a person feel like he's the center of the world. Time and again in this interview a few minutes would pass before I'd realize he was interviewing me.Somewhere in there we played a song together, Steve's song Conveyor Belt. Steve played and sang and I did a harmony and even finagled a little solo into the deal. A sweet moment captured in the studio. This interview was the most fun I've had on the Morse Code Podcast so far. I hope you enjoy it. If you're looking for recommendations for desserts, might I suggest asking folk music and comedy savant Steve Poltz? This man loves gluten and carb-heavy deserts. He also loves collaborations, camaraderie, creativity and using humor in music. It all began for Poltz, or Poltzy as his friends call him, in his birthplace of Halifax Nova Scotia, making him an official Canadian. He spent his formative years in Palm Springs and Los Angeles where, due to his stutter, allergies and asthma, he learned to talk fast to get himself out of trouble. His sense of humor was cultivated in part by his funny parents as well as radio and television. He was particularly taken with The Smothers Brothers, Laugh-In and the novelty songs he heard on Dr. Demento's radio program, which solidified his own aspirations for being silly as hell in his own writing. Along the way, he picked up the guitar at six years old and it's been by his side ever since. After he moved to San Diego to attend college in the 80s, he formed the cow-punk band The Rugburns with Robert Driscoll. The band, who Steve has described as "really slow speed metal," developed a cult following across the US in the early 90s. It was at that time, Poltz met Jewel, who was a struggling musician in the San Diego scene. The two dated (they remain friends to this day) and ended up co-writing one of the biggest songs of the 90s with "You Were Meant for Me." After a brush with a major label (thanks to all the Jewel stuff), he remained an independent artist who developed a reputation for a singular live performance experience. In 2014, he actually had a stroke on-stage, which temporarily caused him to lose his vision, the ability to read and also gave him a new outlook on life. Also: post-stroke, he found a late-in-life obsession with The Grateful Dead. In 2016, he and his wife, Sharon, moved to Nashville, where he discovered that he actually does like the Nashville co-writing thing. He's written songs with people like Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings. His friend Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers) produced his most recent record, Stardust and Satellites. Troubadour Steve Poltz has a legendary Baja tale involving a whale-watching excursion that went comically awry. As he infers, it might not have been as comical as it sounds today in today's Slow Baja conversation. In the early 90's, Poltz was a singer-songwriter with a massive cult following in his adopted home of San Diego. He and his girlfriend at the time, a little-known folk singer named Jewel, decided to go on a getaway to write some songs for a few days. Without much of a plan, they headed South and found themselves on a dark and lonely road late at night somewhere south of San Felipe. Finding a few dim lights down a washboard stretch that doubles as an airstrip, the duo broke into a semi-derelict motel room to crash for the night. They awoke to a glorious day on a gorgeous bay; Jewel, taking in the scene, decided they needed to find a boat to go whale watching. The only boat they could find belonged to a group of Federal Police. Poltz surmises that months of boredom AND seeing Jewel in her bikini may have motivated the Federalies to become tour guides. A high-speed nautical chase ensued; Poltz and Jewel were given bullet-proof vests and offered automatic weapons for their protection. They ran the boats hard onto an island beach. A short foot pursuit led to the apprehension of the slowest drug smuggler; after a brief beating, he revealed where they had hidden a massive stash of marijuana. Poltz tells the harrowing and hilarious story and the after-bust-party antics that led to their writing Jewel's 1996 smash single “You Were Meant For Me,” which reached number 2 in the US. Steve Poltz is a self-described road dog and performance junkie who regularly spends 300 plus days a year on the road including regular stops in Halifax. Unless there's a pandemic. Born in Nova Scotia, raised in California, he now spends much of his time in Nashville when he's not on the road. Poltz has just released his 14th solo album, Stardust & Satellites and he describes himself as the Grateful Dead of Folk music. Whether it's crafting a song about a can of pop, or co-writing a Top 40 song with then-girlfiend Jewel, Poltz is a natural story teller. And a funny one at that. In this conversation, he talks about how the pandemic impacted his career and his life after contracting the Omicron variant. He also shares his take on divisive American Politics, his impromptu run for President and his brief infatuation with live streaming from his kitchen as he made tea and oatmeal. A unique performer with a penchant for quirky and catchy tunes, Poltz is a joy to watch and listen to.

You're going to love this hilarious and insightful chat with a true zen master of the music business, singer-songwriter Steve Poltz. This is one of the wildest Fretboard Journal conversations we've ever had. Sit back and hear about Steve's excellent new album, 'Stardust & Satellites,' produced by Oliver Wood and Jano Rix of the Wood Brothers. We also hear about Steve's childhood encounter with Elvis, some truly wild gigs with the Rugburns, why you should never take that gig opening for Styx, why record sales don't matter, the perils of cocaine (and elephants), and why Bob Taylor didn't want Steve to take "Smokey Joe" (his now-cherished Taylor guitar). Poltz famously co-wrote "You Were Meant for Me" with Jewel, but he continues to co-write with some of our favorite artists, including Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Anthony da Costa, and Sierra Hull. We hear about all that... and more. "I've never quit. It gets better every year. The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week on The Show On The Road, we feature a conversation with a Canadian-born paraparetic prince of pop-folk singers, who has jumped through more gauntlets of the modern music industry than almost anyone in his three plus decades of making records, Steve Poltz. Poltz first hit the scene with the San Diego-based underground punk-folk favorites The Rugburns, then as an accidental hitmaker and MTV video heartthrob with collaborator and friend Jewel, and then as a wild-haired, two hundred shows a year internationally revered solo act. He's put out a baker's dozen of whacked-out, deceptively sensitive, and fearlessly personal albums that have won him devoted audiences from his ancestral home in Nova Scotia to the dance party dives of California to massive festivals across Australia and beyond. As we are still quite separated during the pandemic, host Z. Lupetin called up Poltz in Nashville to discuss the long and twisty road Poltz has travelled -- jumping from his inspired, most-recent album Shine On back to his childhood in swinging Palm Springs (where he met Elvis and Sinatra), to making $100,000 music videos for his ill-fated major label debut in '98, to nearly dying on stage after substance abuse problems and never-say-no-to-a-gig exhaustion took its toll.   We now find him in a more peaceful, purposeful existence in where he is newly married and enjoying making music at home (government orders!) for the first time in decades.

I have met my tangenting match. I went into this interview, backstage at the legendary Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a slate of questions for Steve Poltz, about his new album Shine On, about writing “You Were Meant For Me” with Jewel, about humor in music. I probably could have gotten a good hour with Steve with two or three questions. There is no telling where his mind might flash next. Just in terms of music, the conversation covered his early days with The Rugburns, Nirvana and 90s “goat music,” the Replacements, the Dead Milkmen, Mojo Nixon, Tom Lehrer, and Allan Sherman over the course of a few minutes. We talked about spirituality, Risky Business, Hyman Roth from Godfather II, Jesus, Marianne Williamson, Styx in another five-minute section. At one point, when I told Poltz the name of the podcast, he said, “We're living up to the name.” This breakneck tangenting is something you have experienced if you've seen Poltz onstage. I hadn't seen him play since he did an in-the-round show with Beaver Nelson, “Scrappy” Jud Newcomb, and Adam Carroll perhaps seventeen or eighteen years before. I certainly hadn't remembered this version of him. When he smiles, it splits his face almost completely, and he smiles a lot when he's not singing. He also jigs, which makes him seem like a Muppet version of Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The first several minutes onstage, he told stories, picked up his guitar and put it back down again, and threatened not to pick it up the rest of the show. It'll be there, he said, the audience would see it, but maybe he wouldn't use it. He played the Grateful Dead's “Althea” off the top of his head, which surprised even him. He apologized for the bad notes, but backtracked, saying, “Think of how many bad notes the Dead hit.” The new album is called Shine On, and you can find more info about that and Poltz on www.poltz.com, and find him on Facebook and Twitter under Steve Poltz. You can also find more about Club Passim at www.passim.org. And if you're intrigued by some of the music you heard in the background, that's Boston singer/songwriter Rachel Sumner, formerly of Twisted Pine, and you can find her stuff at www.rachelsumnermusic.com. I am currently putting together this year's Daily Horror Film Fest, for which I post a different short horror film every day in October. If you are a short horror filmmaker, or even if you just have a short horror film you love dearly, e-mail your suggestions to nick@nickzaino.com. And now for something completely different. Or maybe not. This week's featured track is "Comfort" from Secret Shame of Asheville, North Carolina, from their new album, out today, September 5th, called Dark Synmthetic. This new album would have sounded great in nestled somewhere in your collection with the Pixies, The Cure, and Nirvana. It's propulsive guitar rock, mixing glassy chorus and echo with heavy, distorted riffs to create this wide-open sound. From somewhere within that sound, singer Lena is trying to reach you through waves of reverb. Seven songs come in just under twenty-six minutes total. Not a note wasted. The band is kicking off a tour this week, and you can find them on BandCamp and Facebook to find out more.

This is the third and final interview I recorded at NECON 2019, which I have previously described as a mashup of a horror writers conference and summer camp with adult beverages. I attended NECON for the first time in 2018, and this week's guest, Matt Moore, was my roommate. Lucky for me, he is also a fine and thoughtful writer. His debut book is It's Not the End (and Other Lies), a collection of short stories about what Moore calls personal apocalypses. What Moore means by that is that these stories aren't necessarily about the apocalypse writ large with zombies or the annihilation of the human race, although it doesn't exclude those possibilities. They are more about a moment when a character is facing the end of their life as they have known it so far. There are elements of sci-fi, horror, and what has come to be known as speculative fiction. I would highly recommend picking it up. It is on the Toronto-based Chizine Publications, which has featured the work of some wonderful authors, including Gemma Files, Helen Marshall, Bracken Macleod, David Demchuk, Christopher Golden, Stephen Graham Jones, Paul Tremblay, Ed Kurtz, and many more. Moore and I took a deep dive on a few of the stories in It's Not the End, and also the craft of writing short stories. It's a magical art all its own, different from writing novels. Moore found a great quote for it, which he says in the conversation, “Short stories writers are like someone who knows how to make one cookie.” The stories in this book are concise, and they stop at exactly the moment the story is over. Which sounds obvious, but is a difficult thing to navigate in writing. Moore had another great quote for that he heard recently. “Perfection isn't when you can't add anything more, perfection is when you can't take anything more away.” Moore is currently working on a new novel, and I'm looking forward to see how he applies that to a longer work. I was happy to have gotten to read Moore's work and to have gotten to speak with him at NECON. You can hear a bit of the conference going on in the background. When we started the conversation, we were in an out-of-the-way spot where people weren't gathering. But there are giant bags of books that each attendee gets with their admission price, and people were scavenging the leftover bags behind us at one point. So you get a little bit of a feel for the festive and active atmosphere of NECON. Based on the joy of the folks around us, we got into a bit of the psychology of horror writers. You can find out more about Moore on his website at www.mattmoorewrites.com, on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook under @mattmoorewrites. You can find ChiZine Publications on their website at www.chizinepub.com. Also, if you make short horror films, we've got the Daily Horror Film Fest coming up in October, for which I present a new short horror film every day throughout the month. I am currently open for suggestions for your favorite shorts as I put together the 2019 edition. I will write about each one, and interview some of the filmmakers to give a bit more depth. Our featured track this week is “Windows of Halifax” by Steve Poltz from his new album, Shine On. I caught up with Poltz at Club Passim in Cambridge last week, and he will be the subject of next week's episode of the Department of Tangents. You will hear a bit about the background of this song in that episode. Poltz can write an earnest song or a write with a sense of humor, two things that can sometimes feel at odds, at least emotionally. There is a wistfulness in this song to start, but then you get to this kind of gonzo middle section, in which two windows are talking about their plight, and the unsavory occupants of their houses. Poltz was born in Halifax, spent a lot of time in California, and now lives in Nashville, and that means sometimes his accent changes in weird ways. You can hear that in the conversation between the windows on this song, and I am fairly sure I will never get the opportunity to write that sentence again. Find out more about Steve Poltz at poltz.com and on Twitter under @stevepoltz.

What I waited for was the boom to drop. It hasn't yet. Her words are like a smart person and her chords are like their stylish clothes. What else could you ask for? When I mentioned to Poltz bringing her on the podcast, he of course was already very familar with her brilliant songs and equally brilliant wit and warmth. Enjoy!

Steve Poltz is a larger-than-life singer/songwriter, storyteller and entertainer who has been asserting his rugged independence and carrying out his unique personal vision for nearly 3 decades. He has seen accolades come and go in the music industry as a founding member of the San Diego 90's indie-rock-folk-punk band The Rugburns who developed a cult following, as well as achieving huge commercial success for his 1996 worldwide smash hit "You Were Meant For Me" which he co-wrote with Jewel. But Poltz has never been one to let current trends alter his quirky and sometimes crass, as well as heartfelt and honest song writing style as a solo artist, slow down his proliferation of songs, records, videos, blogging or touring, or dissuade him to relentlessly travel the world on his own terms, quietly and steadily accumulating a loyal base of raving fans and friends far and wide. And did I mention he's one of my favorites? In this in-depth and intimate conversation, Poltz shares many insights he has developed on the music industry over the years, thoughts on social media and connecting with an audience, reveals some anecdotes about times when he took his performance sense of humor perhaps a bit too far, and describes his experience of having a stroke on stage and how that indirectly led him to a new-found appreciation of the music of The Grateful Dead. Please Enjoy! These two singer-songwriters take different approaches to their craft -- Grant-Lee Phillips is often ruminative and mystical, while Poltz treats his songs as a catch-all for his expansive and idiosyncratic worldview. But as tour mates, Phillips and Poltz find commonality both in the songs and in conversation, as this special two-for-one episode of Collector's Edition proves. Phillips performs "Smoke and Sparks" and "Holy Irons" from his latest The Narrows, and Poltz plays "I Want All My Friends to Be Happy" and "Folksinger" from his latest, also called Folksinger. Recorded on February 16, 2016 at KHDX in St. Louis. Recorded by Dan Kinney, mixed and mastered by Haley Hudson.

This week, we didn't talk about anything.  We sure didn't talk about that guy and there's no way we talked about that chick.  So everyone can just chill the freak out. Dave figures out that musicians are flaky which is too bad, because we may start planning Jillfest soon.  Due to Dave's incompetence we had to tack on Keziah's Korner to the end of the show.  We didn't get to listen to it yet ourselves, but Dave overheard something about midget penises (seriously).  Here's the link to one of Dave's 900 internet crushes Violet Blue.  She rocks.Music:MC Frontalot - Goth GirlsDick Gregory & Whitee - State of the Black UnionSteve Poltz - Hater's UnionExile Parade - Fire Walk With MeBarefoot Natives - All My Life
