The Ninth Legion (Legio IX Hispana, also sometimes called the "Lost Legion") had a long history. It served under the command of Julius Caesar during the First Century BC, on the side of Octavian in the civil war against Mark Antony and Cleopatra, and was sent to Spain, Germania, Pannonia, and Britain. In Roman Britain, it fought against rebellions, including the rebellion of Queen Boudica in which it narrowly avoided destruction. But its trace was lost in Northern England in the early Second Century AD, which is highly unusual for such an important unit at a time when the Roman Empire was in good shape overall. Was it destroyed in Britain by Celtic tribes, sent to the Netherlands, or did it disappear in a later conflict in Judea or Cappadocia? In this story, we examine the hypotheses and historical context, which provides a good opportunity to explore what Roman legions were, the conquest of Roman Britain, and other aspects of Roman history. Welcome to Lights Out LibraryJoin me for a sleepy adventure tonight. Boudica Movie In Depth Interview Jesse V Johnson "Superbly crafted movie of Queen Boudica's epic fight back against the treacherous Roman Empire." BOUDICA is the bold, bloody story of the titular Celtic Queen. King Prasutagus rules over the Iceni people with his wife Boudica by his side. Prasutagus is betrayed and killed by Rome, leaving Boudica's kingdom without a male heir. The Romans seize her land, her property and abuse her and her children. Driven to the edge of madness and determined to avenge her husband's death, Boudica rallies the various tribes from the region and wages an epic war against the mighty Roman Empire. Starring Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow), Clive Standen (Vikings), Rita Tushingham (Last Night in Soho), (Harry Potter franchise) and James Faulkner (Game of Thrones), Boudica is written and directed by Jesse V. Johnson (Avengement). Director In-depth Interview We talked to the director Jesse V Johnson about his inspiration making the movie. Questions This is very different film to Avengement, Debt Collector, Hell Hath No Fury, How did you come to make this movie? Olga Kurylenko glows as the warrior queen did you create the movie with her in mind? Is there any sense that she is channelling the current war in her own Ukraine? It is beautifully, sumptuously shot with a definite nod to Gladiator in story and style was that intentional? You have an outstanding cast, (Clive Standen, Rita Tushingham, James Faulkner,) Nick Moran as the baddy is superb as the Roman general Catius Decianus. How did you get him to find his character almost wickedly enjoying the slaughter? How did you train the actors and choreograph the fight scenes? The Roman legionaries were impressive in their kit, did they come battle ready? How did you train the Britons to fight a shield wall? It is very different to a tank or RPG, so what was it like working a ballista into the fight action? Was the ancient sword that came alive in Boudica's hands a reference to King Arthur and the sword in the stone? The end fight scene has a Tarantino/ Peckinpahesque (Cross Of Iron (The Wild Bunch?)) violent glory, is that just me or were you channelling them? You shot in Suffolk. What was it like working on location on the earth where it actually happened? You're shooting in Italy right now… what are you making? What is next? "Every martial artist talks about stepping up in the face of evil, BOUDICA did it 2000 years ago" Based on legendary, historical events from 60/ 61 AD in a Britain barely conquered by the Roman Empire, the story of Boudica has inspired generations ever since. Boudica's battle speech "...Among the rest of mankind death frees even those who are in slavery to others; only in the case of the Romans do the very dead remain alive for their profit. Why is it that, though none of us has any money (how, indeed, could we, or where would we get it?), we are stripped and despoiled like a murderer's victims? And why should the Romans be expected to display moderation as time goes on, when they have behaved toward us in this fashion at the very outset, when all men show consideration even for the beasts they have newly captured?..." Recorded by Cassius Dio in about 200 AD, 140 years after the events noted in 60 AD. Availability BOUDICA is available on digital now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

An original, revelatory, enthralling narrative history of how Queen Boudica led the greatest rebellion Britain has ever seen. Almost 2000 years ago, Boudica led the greatest rebellion Britain has ever seen. Within the space of a single blood-soaked year, she united the tribes to deliver blow after devastating blow to the Roman regime, culminating in a brutal, decisive battle. Archaeologist Duncan Mackay has spent a lifetime on the trail of Boudica. Beginning near his home in Norfolk, in the heart of Boudica's tribal territory, he embarks on a journey in the footsteps of Romans and Britons, exploring their villages, towns, forts and roads. The passage of two millennia has buried the world that Boudica knew, but Duncan finds that its echoes and physical traces still surround us - as long as you know where to look. The armies marched along the roads we still use, and died in their thousands in towns, cities and countryside where we still live today. The site of Boudica's last battle was long believed be lost to time, but the threads of the story all pull towards one remarkable, forgotten little corner of the English landscape. From the Breckland of Norfolk to the back streets of Colchester, from the remotest corner of Anglesey to the depths of the London Underground, Duncan takes us back two thousand years to retell the story of Britain's bloodiest year. Fusing ancient history, modern excavation, landscape exploration, and vivid reconstruction, Echolands weaves the long-lost tapestry of Boudica's war.

The Lesbian Review Podcast 10 Lesfic Women Who Will Kick Your Ass     In this episode Sheena is Joined by Brooklyn, fellow reviewer and all round awesome person, and we are talking about 10 lesbian fiction women who will kick your ass.  We love reading action, adventures and other books with awesome heroines who can get some serious stuff done. So we decided to go through some of our favorite kick ass characters.    Sheena’s List  1 Ruby from The Only Way by Jamie Sullivan  The Only Way is set is a bleak, poverty stricken world.  The city holds the wealth and opulence of those with too much money and no caring for anyone else. Next to it is the alley, a sector much poorer than the city but a veritable palace in comparison to the Gutter where the poorest residents live.  Each section is blocked off from the others with security guards, fences and gates that need passes. Our main character, Heart, lives in the Gutter. To make ends meet her father is a fighter. Fighters earn more than many of the residents who pick up bits of metal and thrown away appliances that have landed in the trash heap. Fighting is dangerous, though and when her father doesn’t come home from a fight she had to figure out how to keep her family alive. Her mother was injured in a work accident and is not healthy enough to find work, even if there were jobs available, and the oldest of the three younger siblings is only twelve years in age.  She looks for work, but knows that she will only find work on her back. In a desperate bid to feed her family she cuts her hair, pretends to be a boy and enters the world of no-holds-barred fighting.  Initially she is dismissed by Arena owners until one man decides to give her a chance and takes her on to train her. It is at his Arena, in the Alley, where she meets his daughter, Ruby.  Ruby trains Hart to fight and they develop a strong friendship. As they grow closer, Hart finds it increasingly difficult to keep up the appearance of being a boy.  Get It On Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca   2 Jack from Depths Of Blue by Lise MacTague  Torrin is a smuggler who is always looking for the next big score.
