"Are you not entertained? You will be." I am Maximus Decimus Meridius, and I bring you word of a tale—of honor, betrayal, vengeance, and glory. This week, the warriors known as Three Guys and a Flick—Don, John, and Ken—enter the great arena to review Gladiator, Ridley Scott's epic saga of Rome's might and man's resolve. They speak of my rise and fall… and rise again. They will recount the treachery of Commodus, the fury of the Colosseum, and the moment a fallen general revealed his name to an emperor. The music of Zimmer will thunder. The sands will run red with insight. So gather, citizens of the empire, and bear witness to a discussion worthy of Elysium. Because what we say in this episode… echoes in eternity.

You can text us here!25 years ago, Gladiator was released and became an iconic film almost immediately. What many people may not realise is that Commodus, the son of the Emperor, who was Russel Crow's nemesis, was actually a real historical figure, whose acts of violence and depravity actually had to be toned down for Hollywood. We, of course, are quite happy to talk about him.Support the showwww.strangestuffpodcast.comwww.patreon/strangestuffpodcast#strangestuffpodcast - InstagramStrange Stuff Podcast - YouTubeWe source our material from various web resources, and claim no credit for any original research, as we are too damn lazy/busy to actually carry it out. WARNING! This post and episode both contain spoilers! We are back to discuss Gladiator II, the sequel to Ridley Scott's smash hit Gladiator (2000). Gladiator II is set in the joint reign of Caracalla and Geta. These emperors were brothers in real life, but not the creepy twins shown in the movie. However, let's not get caught up in historical detail! After all, Lucilla should have been executed by Commodus in the first film if we were sticking to the facts. In Gladiator II, we learn that Lucilla's precious son, Lucius Verus, was hidden away in the provinces after Commodus' death and became alienated from the imperial family. He clearly inherited the military skills of his real father (Maximus or Russell Crowe), as Lucius is something of a local hero in his new home. But no one can resist the power of Rome forever. After a military defeat, Lucius ends up in the arena and spends the film wrestling with his past, his trauma and the corruption of Rome. Just like his dad!Whilst Lucius Verus is the hero of this film, as is so often the case in movies about Ancient Rome, the villain steals the show. Macrinus (Denzel Washington) is a master manipulator, skilfully playing a dangerous political game. Will the ghost of Maximus past allow Lucius to finally set Rome on a virtuous path? Or is Rome doomed to be dominated by corrupt politicians? And boy, do we have a treat in store for you all! We were privileged to talk to a giant in the field of classical reception, a man who has spent many decades studying Roman history on film.Martin M. Winkler is Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Classics at George Mason University in Northern Virginia. His research interests include classical mythology, Roman history, classical literature, the classical tradition, and classical literature, history and myth on film. Professor Winkler's list of publications is long indeed, but we will cite a few of our favourites. The Roman Salute: Cinema, History and Ideology (2009), Ovid on Screen: A Montage of Attractions (2020) and most recently, Classical Antiquity and the Cinematic Imagination (2024). Professor Winkler has edited and contributed to volumes on the films Troy (from 2004), Kubrick's 1960 Spartacus, and importantly for today, Ridley Scott's original 2000 Gladiator. We hope that you enjoy our conversation with Professor Winkler in which we discuss:The characters of Maximus and Lucius VerusThe aesthetic of Gladiator IIThe representation of the army and praetorian guard in the sequelThe Roman Senate of Gladiator IIHistorical accuracy in Gladiator IIFor our full show notes and transcript, head over to our website: https://partialhistorians.com/2025/04/03/special-episode-gladiator-ii-with-professor-martin-m-winkler/ For our full show notes and edited transcripts, head on over to https://partialhistorians.com/Support the showPatreonKo-FiRead our booksRex: The Seven Kings of RomeYour Cheeky Guide to the Roman Empire Hosted on Acast. "This Martyr was the daughter of most distinguished and noble parents named Philip and Claudia. Philip, a Prefect of Rome, moved to Alexandria with his family. In Alexandria, Eugenia had the occasion to learn the Christian Faith, in particular when she encountered the Epistles of Saint Paul, the reading of which filled her with compunction and showed her clearly the vanity of the world. Secretly taking two of her servants, Protas and Hyacinth, she departed from Alexandria by night. Disguised as a man, she called herself Eugene [Eugenios -ed.] while pretending to be a eunuch, and departed with her servants and took up the monastic life in a monastery of men. Her parents mourned for her, but could not find her. After Saint Eugenia had laboured for some time in the monastic life, a certain woman named Melanthia, thinking Eugene to be a monk, conceived lust and constrained Eugenia to comply with her desire; when Eugenia refused, Melanthia slandered Eugenia to the Prefect as having done insult to her honour. Eugenia was brought before the Prefect, her own father Philip, and revealed to him both that she was innocent of the accusations, and that she was his own daughter. Through this, Philip became a Christian; he was afterwards beheaded at Alexandria. Eugenia was taken back to Rome with Protas and Hyacinth. All three of them ended their life in martyrdom in the years of Commodus, who reigned from 180 to 192." (Great Horologion)

Robert Winfree and Mark Radulich present our Gladiator 2000 Movie Review!Gladiator is a 2000 historical epic film directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson from a story by Franzoni. It stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, and Richard Harris. Crowe portrays the Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus becomes a gladiator and rises through the ranks of the arena, determined to avenge the murders of his family and the emperor. The screenplay, initially written by Franzoni, was inspired by the 1958 Daniel P. Mannix novel Those About to Die. The script was acquired by DreamWorks Pictures, and Scott signed on to direct the film. Principal photography began in January 1999 and wrapped in May of that year. Production was complicated by the script being rewritten multiple times and by the death of Oliver Reed before production was finished.Gladiator had its world premiere in Los Angeles, California, on May 1, 2000. The film was released in the United States on May 5, 2000 by DreamWorks and internationally on May 12, 2000 by Universal Pictures. The film grossed $465.4 million worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing film of 2000, and won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. A sequel, Gladiator II, was released in November 2024.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Russell Crowe stars as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a loyal Roman general betrayed by the scheming Commodus, played with unsettling intensity by Joaquin Phoenix. Stripped of his rank, family, and freedom, Maximus is forced into the brutal world of gladiatorial combat. As he rises through the ranks of the arena, he becomes a beacon of hope and rebellion, culminating in a battle not just for his life but for the soul of Rome itself. What makes Gladiator resonate so deeply is its ability to blend intimate human drama with epic stakes. Maximus's vendetta against Commodus intertwines with his larger quest for justice, making every clash in the Colosseum emotionally charged. The screenplay, penned by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson, is poetic and visceral, delivering lines like “Are you not entertained?” that have become iconic in pop culture.A Visual and Sonic MasterpieceRidley Scott is a director known for his meticulous attention to detail, and Gladiator is no exception. The film's portrayal of ancient Rome is nothing short of breathtaking. Using a mix of practical sets, CGI, and miniatures, Scott and cinematographer John Mathieson recreated the grandeur of the Colosseum and the chaotic energy of Rome's streets with staggering realism.Equally stunning is Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard's haunting score. The music perfectly captures the film's shifting tones, from the mournful longing of Maximus's loss to the triumphant swell of his victories. Tracks like “Now We Are Free” remain synonymous with the film's legacy, blending orchestral power with ethereal vocals to evoke an almost mythic quality.A Performance for the AgesRussell Crowe's portrayal of Maximus is the beating heart of Gladiator. His transformation from a respected general to a vengeful gladiator is physically demanding and emotionally rich. Crowe embodies Maximus with a quiet intensity, delivering a performance that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. His ability to convey a deep well of grief, determination, and defiance elevates the character into the realm of timeless cinematic heroes.Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus, on the other hand, is a masterclass in villainy. He's not just evil for the sake of it—he's deeply insecure, desperate for approval, and chillingly manipulative. Phoenix walks a delicate line, making Commodus repulsive yet compelling, a character you can't look away from, no matter how despicable his actions. The supporting cast, including Connie Nielsen as the morally torn Lucilla and Richard Harris as the wise Emperor Marcus Aurelius, rounds out the ensemble with gravitas and depth. Even in smaller roles, the film excels in giving its characters memorable moments that add richness to the world.Themes That Echo Through HistoryGladiator isn't just a feast for the senses—it's a film that grapples with timeless themes. Justice, loyalty, and the corrupting nature of power all play pivotal roles in the story. Maximus's journey is as much about reclaiming his honour as it is toppling a corrupt regime. His mantra, “What we do in life echoes in eternity,” underscores the film's meditation on legacy and the impact of our actions. The movie also speaks to the enduring appeal of underdog stories. Maximus's rise from slave to hero taps into a universal desire for justice and redemption, making his triumphs all the more cathartic. At the same time, the film doesn't shy away from the brutality of its world, reminding us that victory often comes at a high cost.A Lasting LegacyWhen Gladiator hit theatres in 2000, it reignited interest in historical epics, paving the way for films like Troy, 300, and Kingdom of Heaven. But few have matched its impact. Its influence extends beyond the genre, inspiring video games, TV series, and countless parodies in pop culture. The film's success also cemented Ridley Scott's reputation as a visionary director and launched Russell Crowe into superstardom. It remains a benchmark for storytelling and craftsmanship, a movie that feels as fresh and powerful today as it did over two decades ago.Why We Still Love GladiatorSo why does Gladiator still hold such a special place in our hearts? Part of it is the sheer spectacle—few films manage to combine action, drama, and historical detail so seamlessly. But more than that, it's the emotional core of the story. Maximus's journey is one of loss, perseverance, and ultimate redemption, themes that resonate universally.Watching Gladiator is an experience that lingers long after the credits roll. Whether it's the breathtaking battles, the nuanced performances, or the hauntingly beautiful score, every element works in harmony to create something truly unforgettable.Final ThoughtsOur latest Born to Watch podcast episode celebrates everything that makes Gladiator a masterpiece. From its technical achievements to its emotional depth, the film is a triumph in every sense of the word. It's a reminder of why we go to the movies—to be moved, thrilled, and inspired. If you haven't revisited Gladiator lately, now is the perfect time. As Maximus would say, “Strength and Honour”—this movie delivers both in spades.

Laten we beginnen! Ultron keert terug als good guy in Armor Wars? ------ Spotify ► https://spoti.fi/2qhR6lr Apple Podcast ► https://apple.co/3GzfqqD Twitter ► https://www.twitter.com/NerdCulturePC Instagram ► https://www.instagram.com/NerdCulture.PC Jelle ► https://www.twitter.com/GKJelle Huey ► https://www.twitter.com/RealHueyBrown Koos ► https://www.twitter.com/jtmooten Outro by Studio Megaane

We know he paid lip service to admitting error in Meditations, to not continuing in error just because you began in one. But how good was he in practice? It's less clear. He was wrong about his son Commodus for example. Was he too proud to admit this? Here, or elsewhere, did he have trouble owning that he was just like everyone else? That he could screw up? “I know you're being light-hearted, but baguettes are way stronger than a sausage roll” ‘Are you not entertained!' scream the panel of peril at their slack-jawed neighbours, wearing just a comical pair of white y-fronts. They are entertained; very much so. With that, they pick up their bottle of milk and head inside to watch this week's film Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000). General Maximus (Russell Crowe) has it all – sweet fur cape, legion of dudes fighting at his side, and a family waiting for his safe return from war. He too has the favour of Roman Caesar Marcus Aurelias (Richard Harris) which may prove to be his undoing, as Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) has a serious case of the green-eyed monster for his father's position. Will the cowardly and jealous Commodus accede to Caesar's will and allow Maximus to lead Rome, or does he have something altogether more diabolical planned? ((Yes) to the second bit)) Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BLZbrLogTo ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Commodus decides the simplest course of action is to simply kill his own father, assume the role of Caesar, have Maximus and his entire family killed – Bob's your Uncle, Fanny's your Aunt. There's just one problem: Maximus does not take kindly to his attempted murder, and kills his would-be killers instead! A series of unfortunate events sees the Spaniard enslaved, eventually arriving back in Rome as a gladiator of some renown. Are Commodus' days numbered, or can he finish off his nemesis for good? ((Yes) to the first bit)) Just what did the panel think of this week's movie, pray tell? How can they improve upon Commodus' campaign of murderous intent? And who will be christened this week's most diabolical?

Marcus Aurelius was chosen by Emporer Hadrian to be his eventual successor. In 161, Aurelius took control of the Roman Empire along with his brother Verus. War and disease threatened Rome on all sides. Aurelius held his territory, but was weakened as a ruler after the death of his brother Verus. His son Commodus later became co-ruler in 177, only three years before Aurelius died on March 17, 180.Today, Ryan reads from his book Lives of the Stoics: The Art of Living from Zeno to Marcus Aurelius to share the winding and often confounding story of one of the most important figures of Stoicism.✉️ Sign up for the Daily Stoic email: https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail

Tom Sutcliffe talks to director Ridley Scott about his new film Napoleon - a subject that takes him back to an actor who's played an emperor for him before – Joaquin Phoenix was Commodus in Gladiator – and back to the period in which his very first film. The Duellists was set. A fifth of the seats at the Royal Albert Hall are owned by just over 300 people - who can choose to enjoy performances or sell the tickets on at a profit. We hear from Richard Lyttelton, a former President of the Royal Albert Hall who believes that making money out of the seats doesn't really align with the original vision of the venue. A Gloucester Old Spot pig has been named The Satsuma Complex - in honour of comedian Bob Mortimer's first book, which has won this year's Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse prize for the best comic novel. He's joined by fellow comedian and member of the judging panel Pippa Evans to explore what makes fiction funny.

Even more recently, what of Stockdale and the complicated nature of the war in Vietnam.Didn't they know? We get so used to having our way. We live in a time when the skies have been conquered. When so many diseases have been vanquished. When technology allows us to do and have things that were inconceivable even just a generation ago.Consequently the eternal battle for our attention, between the things we control and the things we don't, becomes even harder for us to wage. The lessons and warnings the Stoics have issued to us across the centuries about this perpetual internal fight, begin to feel like they belong to a different age, like they are meant for people who are fundamentally different from us.This is how skewed our collective sense of self has become.---And in today's Ask Daily Stoic, Ryan answers questions about how Marcus Aurelius dealt with Commodus's derangement, why the Stoics could be so socially "advanced" in some areas and so "behind" in others, how we can best line up the time when we are the most effective with the work that most needs to be done, and more.✉️ Sign up for the Daily Stoic email: https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail
