Typically, a fallacious argumentative strategy that attacks the character of the person making the argument. Alternatively, a valid strategy basing arguments on the opponents' own commitments, without endorsing those commitments

#MRMARKET: The ad hominem failure. Liz Peek, The Hill, Fox News. 1916 Woodrow Wilson
The ad hominem fallacy happens when we attack someone's character or label them as a "heretic" rather than engaging their arguments. This week's episode will explore the ad hominem fallacy, discuss how it gets abused in christological debates (past and present), and offer several tips to help us avoid committing this fallacy ourselves. Caleb Ontiveros speaks with Johnathan Bi, an entrepreneur and philosopher, about Friedrich Nietzsche's critique of Stoicism and egalitarianism. The conversation begins with Jonathan sharing his personal journey from STEM to philosophy, setting the stage for a deep dive into Nietzsche's challenging ideas. They explore Nietzsche's opposition to Stoic egalitarianism and his concept of "higher men." The discussion delves into the psychology behind moral beliefs and value systems, examining how Nietzsche's insights can be applied to critically examine our own philosophical commitments.https://greatbooks.io/Johnathan's YouTube(01:50) From Hating Humanities to Loving Philosophy(06:06) Silicon Valley Detour(11:01) The Life of Action VS Contemplation(19:58) Philosophy as a Way Of Life(27:43) Nietzsche's Challenge To Stoicism(31:04) The Equality Illusion(39:20) Nietzsche on Epictetus(50:04) Nietzsche For Every Day Life(56:31) Why Ad Hominems Win & Metaethics***Subscribe to The Stoa Letter for weekly meditations, actions, and links to the best Stoic resources: www.stoaletter.com/subscribeDownload the Stoa app (it's a free download): stoameditation.com/podIf you try the Stoa app and find it useful, but truly cannot afford it, email us and we'll set you up with a free account.Listen to more episodes and learn more here: https://stoameditation.com/blog/stoa-conversations/Thanks to Michael Levy for graciously letting us use his music in the conversations: https://ancientlyre.com/

Sekiz yıllık çalışmanın ürünü olarak Yenilgiden Sonra/Doğu Batı ile Yaşamayı Nasıl Öğrendi kitabı Cambridge yayınlarından (After Defeat: How The East Learned to Live With The West) 2010'da çıkıyor.

They are name-calling in congressional committees and judges don't like it when witnesses roll their eyes. It's summer travel time in North America, and as we get ready to go see those relatives we really disagree with, we're re-airing an episode on getting along across difference. Dr. Sturg breaks down the research on how you can get along and maybe even help someone change their mind. Why do grown adult politicians call other people mean names? Personal attacks are designed to make you trust the other person less, and they are deceptive. In this episode of UnSpun, learn about how those attacks work, and how a little laughter can make politics easier to take, as Dr. Sturg and Canadian comedy influencer Brittlestar talk about the power of comedy in news. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 6, 2024 is: ad hominem ad-HAH-muh-num adjective Something described as ad hominem involves an attack on an opponent's character rather than an answer to assertions or points that the opponent has made. // The debate between the mayoral candidates was going smoothly until the ad hominem attacks began. See the entry > Examples: “Ad hominem arguments are viewed, almost universally, as bad, bad, bad.... Students are taught to differentiate between their opponent and their opponent's argument. The rationale for doing so makes perfect sense. In theory, a person's merits are irrelevant to whether their argument makes logical sense. An argument depends on nothing more than whether its conclusion follows its premises; the speaker, you might say, is just the messenger.” — Mehdi Hasan, Win Every Argument: The Art of Debating, Persuading, and Public Speaking, 2023 Did you know? Ad hominem literally means “to the person” in New Latin (Latin as used since the end of the medieval period). In centuries past, the term was used in the phrase “argument ad hominem” (or argumentum ad hominem, to use the full New Latin phrase) to refer to a method of persuasion in which one introduces issues that relate personally to one's opponent, such as the opponent's habits, practices, or circumstances, instead of just sticking to principles or facts. What exactly came into play in such persuasions eventually expanded, and ad hominem came to describe an attack aimed at an opponent's character rather than their ideas. The hostile nature of such attacks has led to an understanding of the term as meaning “against the person,” rather than its original Latin meaning of “to the person.”

In centuries past, the term was used in the phrase “argument ad hominem” (or argumentum ad hominem, to use the full New Latin phrase) to refer to a valid method of persuasion by which one takes advantage of an opponent's interests or feelings in a debate, instead of just sticking to general principles. What exactly came into play in such persuasions eventually expanded, and ad hominem came to describe an attack aimed at an opponent's character rather than their ideas. It's in this decidedly less civil application that ad hominem appears today. Journalist/Supermom, Maura Gallucci and Filmmaker/Author Steve Stockman join Andrew & I… News stuff will come up of course, but if we talk about our lives and what's important to us each, I think that makes it interesting. I acknowledge my treatments. I've been using my forced laziness to sit and talk with more friends than ever before. Side effects are not terrible, but it's good to be near a couch and a bathroom. I'm reading a book about Jesus. How did that happen? It has to do with Women's Undergarments. I feel guilty about the small things I'm buying on Amazon. Not the big stuff. The little stuff. In this episode, we discuss some of the most common logical fallacies that are used in debates and discussions. The Strawman, the Ad Hominem, the Red Herring. Those are the only ones with cool names, but we go through seven in total. With each of them, we give actual examples and walk through how they work. We also talk about how to avoid falling into these patterns and why people who actually engage with other's arguments like Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson have stood out for being willing to do so and have had some measure of success in changing people's minds about fairly controversial issues. Engaging with actual arguments and understanding and avoiding logical fallacies is worth the effort. In this episode, we discuss some of the most common logical fallacies that are used in debates and discussions. The Strawman, the Ad Hominem, the Red Herring. Those are the only ones with cool names, but we go through seven in total. With each of them, we give actual examples and walk through how they work. We also talk about how to avoid falling into these patterns and why people who actually engage with other's arguments like Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson have stood out for being willing to do so and have had some measure of success in changing people's minds about fairly controversial issues.--Engaging with actual arguments and understanding and avoiding logical fallacies is worth the effort. Allison Kaplan Sommer, Don Futterman and Noah Efron discuss three topics of incomparable importance and end with an anecdote about something in Israel that made them smile this week. Hear the Extra-Special, Special Extra Segment on Patreon —Ad Hominem, Ad Absurdum, Ad Victorium & Ad Nauseum— We watched hundreds of election ads, so you don't have to. What do they tell us about that the parties are trying to tell voters? —Thesis – Antithesis – Screw You!— Maybe nothing makes people as mad as beloved celebrity changing political camps. How come? —After the Holidays— For a month, during the holidays, it's almost impossible to do anything. Then the world comes crashing back. —Oh, Kanye!— For our most unreasonably generous Patreon supporters, in our extra-special, special extra discussion: Why didn't Kanye's tweet bug Israeli Jews (who, one imagines, Kanye's also gone to Death Con 3 on). All this and Meshi Kleinstein, the daughter of two of the most popular singers in Israel's history, now singing on her own (and also with her folks)!

This episode, like the episode last week, is what I like to call a "lighthouse" episode. It's more about what to watch out for than what to do. I'm continuing my discussion of ideas that inspired me from therulesofcivilconversation.org. Two more logical fallacies to beware of: the ad hominem and genetic fallacies. A lot of Christian women seem to have the mistaken idea that “speaking the truth in love” equates to being “nice.” We should always be smiling and sweet and never say anything that might hurt someone's feelings or could rock the boat. But what does the Bible say about our tone? Michelle and Amy dig […]
Logic is an important study that everyone should have at least a basic knowledge of. This includes fallacies. Fallacy simply means a mistake in reasoning. Fallacies, when we can see them, can help us see when someone is saying something that isn't true. This leads to people properly avoiding these mistakes. However, people can also incorrectly call something a fallacy that isn't. One of the most common examples of this is the fallacy known as ad hominem. Ad hominem usually refers to "name calling," or making a statement about the person arguing instead of the argument. However, we see all over the Bible making direct and often offensive claims about people, and sometimes even calling them names. However, they do this while also attacking the argument they're up against. This should tell us that name calling isn't always a fallacy, and can potentially be used appropriately to accentuate a point. When we argue biblically, we should be ready to defend ourselves from claims that we're just "name calling" when we are really pointing out truth.Listen to the episode for more! _____________________________________________________________________ Good Monsters on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVwB26yxtYWUopfFPhAsb8wGood Monsters on BitChute https://www.bitchute.com/channel/CDw0Zu3shEqS/Good Monsters on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/goodmonsterspodcast/Good Monsters on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/6CqhvtMGood Monsters on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/good-monsters/id1528869516Podcast Episodes on Buzzsprout https://www.buzzsprout.com/1300948/episodesIntro and Outro is Dreaming Days by Ketsa and is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 License. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
