This week on Royally Screwed, we're talking about Boudica, the queen of the Iceni tribe in Celtic Britain. As Rome comes barreling across the island in its attempts to solidify its conquest, it ended up making plenty of enemies. But no enemy was able to shake the empire to its core like her. So, who was Boudica, and how did she come to make it so that even Emperor Nero had second thoughts about a British invasion?Subscribe for more episodes as they come.Twitter: @Denim_CreekInstagram: denimcreekproMusic:Intro/Outro: “Life O' the Lavish” - Jules Gaia, “Smooth Passenger” - White Bones, "“Dayfreak” - White Bones, “Action rock_full” - Radio_Parma, “In Next Life” - UneasyCopyright 2025, Denim Creek Productions

We're back with Season Eight of the Dead Ladies Show Podcast!  In this episode, DLS co-founder Katy Derbyshire brings us the story of Boudica, an ancient British queen who fought the Romans. Though she led her Iceni tribe in a rebellion, the Romans prevailed, but wrote a fair bit about her in the history books.  In her afterlife, Boudica became a mascot for the suffragettes but also co-opted as a symbol for all things British; also, Enya wrote a song about her.  DLS co-founder Florian Duijsens joins producer/host Susan Stone to set the stage.   Get more info on Boudica in our episode notes: https://deadladiesshow.com/2025/3/xx/podcast-79-boudica/ For more on the Boudica-inspired perfume Susan mentioned, look here:   https://www.boudiccawode.com/ Dead Ladies NYC has a show March 6 — find out more here on their newsletter: https://deadladiesshow.substack.com/ And in Berlin we are celebrating 10 years of DLS! Queen Boudicca of the Iceni is by far one of the most impressive queens I have ever read about. Boudicca grew up in a time before the Romans came to Britain, but in her adult life, she had to deal with constant Roman oppression against her pepole. When the Romans refused to honour the will of her husband and attacked her and her daughters, she called upon her fellow Celts. She started one of the most destructive rebellions that the Romans ever dealt with, all to avenge her pepole and her children. Join me on today's episode to learn about her remarkable story. Another release from the Patreon vault! At its height, the Roman Empire stretched across the regions of what today makes up most of Western Europe, portions of Eastern Europe and West Asia, down into the Middle East, and across northern Africa. And at the farthest western reach of that great Empire was the island of Britannia. But in 60/61 CE, the unquestionable might of Rome was nearly upended by a band of rebellious tribes at the edge of the empire. This violent uprising would leave three Roman cities in ruins and thousands dead. The rebellion was eventually quashed, its leaders annihilated, and considering the war lasted one year, it should have been only a footnote in history. Instead, it captured the attention and imagination of chroniclers, rulers and historians across the world and down the generations. In part because this fierce and bloody rebellion was led by a woman: Boudica, Queen of the Iceni. Her name and her life have become the stuff of legends.

Boudica Movie In Depth Interview Jesse V Johnson "Superbly crafted movie of Queen Boudica's epic fight back against the treacherous Roman Empire." BOUDICA is the bold, bloody story of the titular Celtic Queen. King Prasutagus rules over the Iceni people with his wife Boudica by his side. Prasutagus is betrayed and killed by Rome, leaving Boudica's kingdom without a male heir. The Romans seize her land, her property and abuse her and her children. Driven to the edge of madness and determined to avenge her husband's death, Boudica rallies the various tribes from the region and wages an epic war against the mighty Roman Empire. Starring Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow), Clive Standen (Vikings), Rita Tushingham (Last Night in Soho), (Harry Potter franchise) and James Faulkner (Game of Thrones), Boudica is written and directed by Jesse V. Johnson (Avengement). Director In-depth Interview We talked to the director Jesse V Johnson about his inspiration making the movie. Questions This is very different film to Avengement, Debt Collector, Hell Hath No Fury, How did you come to make this movie? Olga Kurylenko glows as the warrior queen did you create the movie with her in mind? Is there any sense that she is channelling the current war in her own Ukraine? It is beautifully, sumptuously shot with a definite nod to Gladiator in story and style was that intentional? You have an outstanding cast, (Clive Standen, Rita Tushingham, James Faulkner,) Nick Moran as the baddy is superb as the Roman general Catius Decianus. How did you get him to find his character almost wickedly enjoying the slaughter? How did you train the actors and choreograph the fight scenes? The Roman legionaries were impressive in their kit, did they come battle ready? How did you train the Britons to fight a shield wall? It is very different to a tank or RPG, so what was it like working a ballista into the fight action? Was the ancient sword that came alive in Boudica's hands a reference to King Arthur and the sword in the stone? The end fight scene has a Tarantino/ Peckinpahesque (Cross Of Iron (The Wild Bunch?)) violent glory, is that just me or were you channelling them? You shot in Suffolk. What was it like working on location on the earth where it actually happened? You're shooting in Italy right now… what are you making? What is next? "Every martial artist talks about stepping up in the face of evil, BOUDICA did it 2000 years ago" Based on legendary, historical events from 60/ 61 AD in a Britain barely conquered by the Roman Empire, the story of Boudica has inspired generations ever since. Boudica's battle speech "...Among the rest of mankind death frees even those who are in slavery to others; only in the case of the Romans do the very dead remain alive for their profit. Why is it that, though none of us has any money (how, indeed, could we, or where would we get it?), we are stripped and despoiled like a murderer's victims? And why should the Romans be expected to display moderation as time goes on, when they have behaved toward us in this fashion at the very outset, when all men show consideration even for the beasts they have newly captured?..." Recorded by Cassius Dio in about 200 AD, 140 years after the events noted in 60 AD. Availability BOUDICA is available on digital now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In 60CE, Boudica, Queen of the Iceni, led a violent uprising of unprecedented scale that tore across the southeast of Britannia, burning London and shocking the Roman world. But what's the real story? Was she real? Was she a literary construct? How are our modern conceptions of Boudica affected by the Victorians and Elizabethans?

While Rome expanded its reach across Europe and onto the isles of Britannia, not everyone was on board with domination from a distant bureaucracy. Rebellions and uprisings in Roman-held territory were not particularly uncommon, but a series of missteps by Roman governors in what is now the United Kingdom amounted to a series of costly own-goals. After Caligula's successor, Claudius, gained a foothold in Britain in AD 43, his armies were forced to put down an uprising four years later, which likely laid the groundwork for a bloody insurgency that nearly cost Rome its entire occupation in AD 60 or 61. Who was the fierce commander who set the legions of Rome on their heels? It was Boudica of the Iceni, a once Rome-friendly Queen of her people who became an icon of the fury of a woman pushed too far, and a keystone of the modern UK's national identity. Depends on who you ask), sees her campaign of bloody revenge in the south of England as well as our very own collectible trading cards that sound an awful lot like a scam, because they more than likely are. Before we look at the final, climactic battle between the fury of the Iceni horde and the might of the Roman war machine, we show the different styles of warfare- from the armored legions of rome the exposed, and potentially blue, genitals of the Britons. A sneak peak at my latest Patreon Exclusive episode! At its height, the Roman Empire stretched across the regions of what today make up most of western Europe, portions of eastern Europe and west Asia, down into the Middle East and across northern Africa. And at the farthest western reach of that great Empire was the island of Britannia. But in the 60/61 CE the unquestionable might of the Rome was nearly upended by a band of rebellious tribes at the edge of the empire. This violent uprising would leave three Roman cities in ruins and thousands dead. The rebellion was eventually quashed, it's leaders annihilated, and considering the war had only lasted one year, it should have just been footnote in history. Instead it captured the attention and imagination of chroniclers, rulers and historians across the world and down the generations. In part because this fierce and bloody rebellion was led by a woman: Boudica, Queen of the Iceni. Her name and her life have become the stuff of legends.

Our Story This is a story of a cheerful, fearless farmhand named Fred who lived in the Fens, the marshy, bogs of East Anglia. He was at home in himself and on the land, and that attracted the jealousy of the other young men on the farm. This story, inspired by a tale called "The Syleham Lamps," collected in https://amzn.to/3RQ34xs (Kirsty Hartsiotis's Suffolk Folk Tales), features the mysterious will-o'-the-wisps, the mysterious marsh lights that appear over the bogs of the Fens in eastern England. Our Guest Robyn Watt  is an animist teacher and practitioner in the traditions of the British Isles. She offers programs for somatic nature connection, and soul and ancestor-tending in the field of the animist healing arts. After moving to Canada from the UK, Robyn navigated the experience of grieving for her homeland by reclaiming the ancient animist cosmologies of her ancestry. Through this, she came into the work of guiding others who also long to reconnect to their ancestral wisdom traditions from far away.  Find Robyn at sacredearthgrove.com, in her online community oursacredcircles.com & on Instagram @sacred.earth.grove Our Conversation Robyn begins with an invocation of the ancestors and the land as she tells a story inspired by the counties of Suffolk and Norfolk, where  she grew up and where her family has lived for centuries. What it means to live in North America and feel the call back to ancestral homelands. Robyn describes it as a wounding but also considers the gift of reconnection that follows the pain of disconnection. Animism upholds the sentience and aliveness of the world. It is rooted in the ancient understanding that the world can and wants to communicate with us is something that many modern people know in their bones, even before they know the word. Animism is a powerful way to cope with environmental crisis and climate anxiety. The perennial struggle of nature versus civilization, as embodied by Fred and his struggle with the other stable boys  Disney brought the will o' the wisps to popular consciousness in the movie Brave. As imperfect as Disney is, there's magic in the way modern retellings give us access to the ancient in a vital way The Fens were also home to Queen Boudicca's Iceni tribe  Resources and sources of inspiration: artist and author Katie Holton's work with the Ardee Bog in County Louth;  Francis Pryor's book https://amzn.to/3ra8Kqb (The Fens: Discovering England's Ancient Depths); Philip Pullman's novel https://amzn.to/3Syz74Y (The Secret Commonwealth.) The scientific explanation for the marshlights or “ignis fatuus”: they are created by the oxidation of gasses produced by organic decay that cause photon emissions. But also… it's magic! Our Story  You must meet Maeve, the Celtic Magdalen, the heroine of the four novels in Elizabeth Cunningham's The Maeve Chronicles. From her beginnings on the Celtic Island of Women Tír Na mBán, to “Druid School” on the Isle of Mona, and then on to Rome, the Galilee, southern France, and then back to Britain when Queen Boudicca of the Iceni was battling for her tribe and her sovereignty, Maeve has see it all.  Her sensibilities are both ancient and modern, and make her one of fiction's most powerful, enduring characters.  Elizabeth reads excerpts from Magdalen Rising, in which Maeve meets the Cailleach and gets her first sex-ed lesson from her warrior witch mothers and from Red Robed Priestess, the final novel in the series. Our Guest Elizabeth Cunningham is a novelist, poet, musician, and counselor based in New York's Hudson Valley.  She is the author and illustrator of The Book of Madge, a graphic novel, and the source of her best known work, The Maeve Chronicles. Your own terms. Sovereignty is your birthright and your inheritance.” * “A story is true as long as it's well told”:  the power of contemporary fiction to shape the imaginal realm. * How Maeve's story fits other beliefs about Mary Magdalene as disciple or as keeper of the divine blood line. * Maeve's origin story and how she was born of the need for a “human goddess”  * The romanticization of Celtic culture and Elizabeth's reservations about writing about the Celts once she learned of their brutality and penchant for head hunting * Representations of different kinds of sovereignty in women: as lover, healer, mother, disciple, brothel owner * Sex work, prostitution, and priestesshood * Maeve's first experience as a healer: a companion's botched abortion * What it's like to create a character who walks with you for more than 30 years: Elizabeth calls Maeve her Best Imaginary Friend Forever Our Music Music at the start of the show is by Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy, a Celtic Fiddle and multi-instrumental duo based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Romans had conquered and occupied much of the island and around 60-61 AD, after her husband's death, the occupying forces redoubled their savagery against her people. They confiscated Iceni wealth and killed indiscriminately. They flogged Boudicca and raped her daughters in the market square.Boudicca bided her time and galvanized her forces. She also managed to bring together other tribes of Britannia to mount a rebellion against the Roman occupiers. Spurred by revenge she was successful for a while, regaining much of the land the Iceni had lost.
