Gurdip and Justin delve into the recording sessions from May 1963 and January 1964 which produced songs initially spread out across numerous singles and albums over a five year span. While the music reflected a more polished Nashville-tinged pop sound that Elvis had been subtly building upon in the early 60s, giving us such iconic recordings as "Devil in Disguise," "Memphis Tennessee" and "It Hurts Me," fans at the time never quite got the chance to take full stock of what Elvis was artistically doing at this moment in time. But decades later, the material comprised the retrospective compilation "For the Asking" aka "The Lost Album." The guys sit down to look back on all of it. For the first Songs of the Week of 2025, Gurdip surprises with a short excursion to hear Elvis' live on-stage gag performances of "The Mickey Mouse Club March." Then, Justin spotlights "Look Out Broadway," the aspirational showtune from "Frankie and Johnny" that makes numerous Gilded Age pop culture references and features vocalists Ray Walker and Eileen Wilson chiming in as other characters... in one of the very few traditional musicals Elvis ever made in his film career! NEW GOVERNMENT: WHAT CAN RECRUITERS / HR EXPECT? We'll be over a month since the General Election, in which almost all pollsters predict the Labour Party forming the government with the largest majority since Tony Blair 1997. How radical will this new government be? Are we going to see New Labour 2.0 or as some critics contend, Tory-lite 2.0? Whatever the flavour of personal politics, it remains the case that change of government means change in legislation, especially in taxation, employment law, immigration law, pension reform and the rest. What does this mean for us recruiters and HR professionals? What can we expect from the new government? We're going to look into a foggy crystal ball and try to have a look, with market observers Neil Carberry, CEO (Recruitment & Employment Confederation, Tony Wilson, Director (Institute of Employment Studies), Ray Walker, VP of Contingent Workforce (Worksome) & friends. In today's workforce landscape, Ray Walker stands out as a leading expert in contingent workforce compliance. A seasoned professional who ensures compliance with both general and immigration laws, Walker's primary focus is maintaining business integrity while adhering to complex regulations. Contingent workers, defined as non-standard, off-payroll employees engaged on a project basis, have become a significant part of the labor market, constituting one-fifth of the UK labor market. Walker categorizes contemporary workers into three main types: traditional full-time employees, gig workers, and professional service providers. Each group faces unique legislative challenges, especially in a globalized economy where misclassification and multi-jurisdictional issues are common. Walker's expertise is precious in navigating these complexities, ensuring businesses remain compliant without hindering operational efficiency. His insights into the future of work emphasize the need for companies and workers to adapt to decentralized, technology-driven models, ensuring success in this dynamic environment.

Caleb Truax (born September 14, 1983) is an American professional boxer. He held the IBF super middleweight title from 2017 to 2018 and challenged once for the WBA (Regular) middleweight title in 2015. Truax played football at Virginia State University for one year before a knee injury ended his gridiron career. He returned home in 2003 to attend the University of Minnesota, and it was there at the age of 19 that Truax entered a local Toughman contest. He lost his first fight, but soon became consumed by boxing—altering his diet and training as he pursued an amateur career. Truax graduated from the University of Minnesota majoring in Sociology, minoring in both African American studies and Political Science. Caleb Truax debuted as a professional fighter in April 2007 with a 2nd-round knockout of Ray Walker. As of March 2015, Truax has a professional record of 25 wins, one loss, and two draws. Truax has defeated Ossie Duran, Matt Vanda, Andy Kolle, Phil Williams, Jonathan Reid, Antwun Echols, Durrell Richardson, and James Crayton. His professional loss came to former undisputed middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor (Truax knocked Taylor down in the 9th round.) Truax drew Ossie Duran in a 10-round non-title bout at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The bout was part of an eight-fight card promoted by Mike Tyson's new company, Iron Mike Productions. Mike Tyson was in attendance at the event, and said of Truax, "I hear he is exciting and he is something that we need for boxing, he is a breath of fresh air because boxing is in the doldrums right now. I'm looking forward to seeing him and if he is as much as everyone has told me."

Many good judges believe Mister Rea is the best 2 year old pacer seen out this season. The no nonsense colt is unbeaten in six runs. We catch up with his trainer Ray Walker. Ray has bred many of his best horses over the years including Mister Rea. He says the colt's dam was a very fast mare. He says the grand dam was even better but plagued with problems. Ray talks of Mister Rea's manners and faultless gait. He talks of his co- owners wife Jane and long time friend Greg O'Callaghan. He reviews the colt's racing career so far, and tells us a little about the background of regular driver Darryl Perrot. Ray looks back on the horror race fall which claimed the life of his father Col in 1978. He immediately took over the running of the family training operation in Leeton. The popular horseman looks back on his first win and his initial success at Harold Park. He reflects on the career of the only 2 year old he compares with Mister Rea. Ray looks back on Jossella- the wonderful mare who launched his professional career. He highlights Granodorite, another great money spinner in his early days, and Glenburn Chef who did a great job before going amiss. He looks back on the worst race fall of his career. He was in a multiple pile up on the final turn at Bulli. To this day he feels the effects of a broken heel. Ray speaks of his all time favourite Imastrongone winner of an amazing 34 races. Fast, tough and brave he was a fiercely competitive racehorse. He also speaks glowingly of another tough cookie in Vasco Da Gama. He looks back on a career which has yielded hundreds of winners and multiple premierships. He says he's cutting back a bit these days. No discussion with a Temora man would be complete without a tribute to the great Paleface Adios. Ray remembers the champion fondly. He talks of the invaluable support of his wife Jane who drives fast work on the Temora track. Ray enjoys the breeding side of the business and makes mention of his broodmare band. When pressed to nominate his all time race driving hero he comes up with a legendary name from the 1970's. Ray offers his comments on the decision by HRA and HRNZ to change the official birthday of southern hemisphere standardbreds. Great to catch up with a devoted trotting man from the NSW Riverina.
Ronnie McDowell has an amazing string of hit songs that he has amassed over the years, but it is his riveting stage presence and genuine warmth that fills the seats again and again. Like all great entertainers, Ronnie McDowell has a personality that remains luminous long after the lights go dim. These qualities have inspired a nationwide network of fan-clubs with thousands of members, each one a devoted promoter of everything McDowell does. Following the death of Elvis Presley in 1977, Ronnie McDowell came out of nowhere to dazzle the world with his heartfelt and self-penned tribute song “The King Is Gone” on the independent Scorpion label. The record took off immediately, gaining airplay on country and pop stations across the country and around the world. To date, “The King Is Gone” has sold more than 5 Million copies. All of a sudden, the young Vietnam Veteran from Portland, Tennessee was a star, and he quickly proved that he wasn't just a one-trick pony. McDowell scored a second hit for the Scorpion label titled “I Love You, I Love You, I Love You” before being wooed and signed by CBS Records – Epic label in 1979. Ronnie McDowell charted a string of hit singles and albums for Epic between 1979 and 1986. Every single release with the exception of just one became a Top 10 Hit including the chart toppers “Older Women” and “You're Gonna Ruin My Bad Reputation.” Other hits during his Epic years included “Watchin Girls Go By,” “Personally,” “You Made A Wanted Man Of Me,” “All Tied Up,” and “In A New York Minute.” McDowell toured constantly to support each album release and consequently built an astounding fan base throughout the country. He sought the advice of artists such as Conway Twitty who became, in essence, not only his mentor but his friend as well. Twitty helped the young singer with advise about touring, recording and most of all entertaining the fans. Twitty was certainly the master and Ronnie McDowell quickly became his prize pupil. Moving to Curb Records in 1986, his current label to date, McDowell scored a Top 10 hit with “It's Only Make Believe,” a duet with Conway Twitty on what was Twitty's breakthrough hit from 1958. Two years later Ronnie teamed up with Jerry Lee Lewis for a rocking duet that McDowell wrote titled,”You're Never Too Old To Rock N' Roll.” He also recorded yet another Top 10 hit with his version of the pop standard “Unchained Melody,” which also became a #1 country music video. To date, McDowell has scored over 30 top ten records. His entertaining abilities soared and he began to draw larger crowds. He started appearing in larger venues and touring with artists such as Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn before headlining his own shows. Two of McDowell's most recent projects on Curb Records include an album of beach music with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Bill Pinkney's Original Drifters, entitled, “Ronnie McDowell with Bill Pinkney's Original Drifters”. The second project is a new country album titled “Ronnie McDowell Country”, a collection of six new McDowell penned songs, and a few country standards by such Legendary writers as Buck Owens, Harlan Howard and Dallas Frazier. Ronnie McDowell is still constantly in demand on the road and he tours relentlessly with his band. Additionally, he often tours with Elvis Presley's original sideman D.J. Fontana along with Ray Walker a longtime member of The Jordanaires staging a tribute to Elvis Presley's music. Ronnie McDowell sang 36 songs on the soundtrack “Elvis,” the Dick Clark-produced television movie that featured Kurt Russell as the performer. He also was the singing voice for the television movie “Elvis And Me”, the ABC television series about the early years of Elvis' career titled simply “Elvis” as well as, the 1997 Showtime special “Elvis Meets Nixon.” While Elvis Presley has played a big part in Ronnie McDowell's musical career over the years,

Show # 40: Interview with Ray Walker of the Jordanaires
It is one of the Vietnam War's most famous battles. The locals called it "Dong Ap Bia" or "Mountain of the Crouching Beast"; the Americans came to know it as Hamburger Hill. But what do you really know about the fight? Risking serious injury due to unexploded bombs and ordnance, "War Stories Investigates" journeyed to the top of Hamburger Hill. We traveled over 8,000 miles and, in doing so, "War Stories" became the first journalists or camera crew to visit Hamburger Hill since the Vietnam War. This unprecedented expedition will provide you an amazing understanding of what it is was like to do battle on this rain forest-covered mountain. In May of 1969 the famed 101st Airborne Division launched "Operation Apache Snow." The goal was simple: enter the A-Shau Valley, find the enemy and kill them. But, even a good plan never survives first contact with the enemy. From the beginning of the war, the A-Shau's steep, jungle covered slopes and valleys were an enemy stronghold. This American and South Vietnamese assault would be met with stunning force, but not where or how anyone expected. In this fascinating episode of "War Stories" you will meet a Vietnamese veteran who fought with the enemy. Hear him talk about the tactics that worked against America and our weapons he most feared. You will also learn what it was like from American veterans. "War Stories" sat down with over a dozen men who battled for the mountain. Men like Frank Boccia, John Snyder and Ray Walker, all members of Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 187th Regiment of the famed "Screaming Eagles." On May 11, 1969, it was Bravo Company that first encountered the heavily armed and fortified positions of the North Vietnamese Army's 29th Regiment. The days that followed took hundreds of lives and wounded thousands. You need to hear this episode of "War Stories Investigates with Oliver North" if you truly want to understand the battle for Hamburger Hill.
