WATCH VIDEO HEREOur very own, Fr. Brian Walker, OP breaks open the readings for the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, reminding us of the importance of interpreting scripture correctly. When Jesus says "if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out", he does not mean that literally. Better for us to get our eye and our tongue under control and to teach them not to lead us on a path to sin. Readings: Numbers 11:25–29; James 5:1–6; Mark 9:38–43, 45, 47–48
Readings: Numbers 11:4-6,10-16,24-29 | Psalm 19:7-14 | James 5:13-20 | Mark 9:38-50. Preached for the 19th Sunday after Pentecost (2024-09-29).
September 29, 2024. Today's sermon is about lines in the sand. Jesus' disciples tried to draw a line in the sand in our gospel reading. And today, humans are still drawing lines in the sand, leaving out those most vulnerable. But new things are emerging, here in our own lives, at Christ Lutheran, and in our synod. The Spirit of God moves in all of us. God is erasing the lines, and we are called to help with the work.Readings: Numbers 11:4-6,10-16,24-29, James 5:13-20, Mark 9:38-50

The parable of the rich farmer wanting to build bigger barns and Jesus' teaching on worry and possessions resonates with one of the the main themes found in the Feast of Trumpets/Rosh HaShana holiday: God's Kingship and the confrontation with idolatry. Surely, the idols of our age are the search for personal prosperity, peace and security. And when these become our primary goals we are tested in the very things that we crave. Such testing should be welcomed as it enables us to deepen our discipleship and model Jesus' alternative to the world's well meaning, desire for the good life. Balaam and the DonkeyThe Israelites are travelling through the desert and they come to Moab. Balak, the Moabite king, is terrified of these people - obviously, stories of what had happened in Egypt has spread. He wants to hinder them, so he decides to hire Balaam, a famous conjuror, to come and curse them. His reputation was that, whoever he blessed was blessed and whoever he cursed was cursed.

A Census...This week, we are going to think of the way the Bible is shaped at the beginning of both the Old and New Testaments. We start with the first five books of the Bible: The Pentateuch. The first five books or the Torah, as it is known within Judaism; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

Readings: Numbers 11:25–29 Psalm 19:8,10,12–14 James 5:1–6 Mark 9:38–48 Today's Gospel begins with a scene that recalls a similar moment in the history of Israel, the episode recalled in today's First Reading. The seventy elders who receive God's Spirit through Moses prefigure the ministry of the Apostles. Like Joshua in the First Reading, John makes the mistake of presuming that only a select few are inspired and entrusted to carry out God's plans. The Spirit blows where it wills (see John 3:8), and God desires to bestow His Spirit on all the people of God in every nation under heaven (see Acts 2:5, 38). God can and will work mighty deeds through the most unexpected and unlikely people. All of us are called to perform even our most humble tasks, such as giving a cup of water, for the sake of His name and the cause of His kingdom. John believes he is protecting the purity of the Lord's name. But, really, he's only guarding his own privilege and status. It's telling that the Apostles want to shut down the ministry of an exorcist. Authority to drive out demons and unclean spirits was one of the specific powers entrusted to the Twelve (see Mark 3:14–15; 6:7, 13). Cleanse me from my unknown faults, we pray in today's Psalm. Often, like Joshua and John, perhaps without noticing it, we cloak our failings and fears under the guise of our desire to defend Christ or the Church. But as Jesus says today, instead of worrying about who is a real Christian and who is not, we should make sure that we ourselves are leading lives worthy of our calling as disciples (see Ephesians 1:4). Does the advice we give, or the example of our actions, give scandal—causing others to doubt or lose faith? Do we do what we do with mixed motives instead of seeking only the Father's will? Are we living, as this Sunday's Epistle warns, for our own luxury and pleasure while neglecting our neighbors? We need to keep meditating on His Law, as we sing in today's Psalm. We need to pray for the grace to detect our failings and to overcome them.

14 March 2021 - Fourth Sunday in Lent - In Numbers 21, the children of Israel sin and bring a plague upon themselves. God in his mercy allows them to restore their relationship with him through a strange device, a bronze serpent on a pole. One thousand years later, Jesus tells Nicodemus he is the one who will restore relationship between God and his people. Canon Daryl Fenton reminds us that relationship cannot be restored by a mere transaction; repentance, a change of heart, is required. Readings: Numbers 21:4-9 Ephesians 2:1-10 John 3:14-21 Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22 Each week during Lent, we will be posting all four lectionary readings for that Sunday, opening and closing with a prayer and a blessing. Before you begin, take a few moments to quiet yourself with a few deep breaths. As you listen to God's Word being read, listen for a word or phrase that resonates with you and savor those words. You can listen to all four readings at once, or save one for each day. You might hit pause after the readings for a time of silence and reflection before continuing. May the Holy Spirit guide you through this season of repentance and self-examination so that Christ may be formed more fully within us.
The fourth of the Old Testament promises providing a baptismal lens this Lent is the promise God makes to Moses: those who look on the bronze serpent will live. In today’s gospel Jesus says he will be lifted up on the cross like the serpent, so that those who look to him in faith will live. When we receive the sign of the cross in baptism, that cross becomes the sign we can look to in faith for healing, for restored relationship to God, for hope when we are dying.Readings: Numbers 21:4-9; Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22; John 3:14-21

9 Sept 2018 - On the morning before Rosh Hashanah, Rev. David Pileggi tells us how in this spiritual new year, it is time for us to take stock, to examine ourselves for those things that offend God and our neighbor, to seek reconciliation, to humble ourselves and repent. The sound of the shofar (ram's horn) is to wake us from our slumber, to warn us to stay awake. What is staying awake? Being careful how we live before God, especially as we live under the great pressure of this world. Readings: Numbers 29:1-6; Revelation 3:1-6; John 12:44-50
Rev. Beverly Gibson & Johnny Gwin discuss the lessons and readings from Laetare Sunday (fourth Sunday of Lent) covering the meaning of the Bronze Serpent of Numbers, our web of spiritual and physical connections in our lives, cosmic struggles, Oscar speeches, and God's grace. Rev. Gibson describes the ever-present, ever merciful love of God. Even when we act out of impatience and disobedience (like the Isrealites in the wilderness), God's loving response is grace and healing. In a world of struggle and sin, God collaborates with his followers personally and universally to raise us above the darkness and sin of the world. God did this by sending us the source of his "light", Jesus Christ. Jesus is the source of the deeds done in God in a world full of poisonous sin. Sending his only Son to be sacrificed on The Cross was not to condemn us but to save us from the snakes of our flaws and the ubiquitous "ruler of the air." We are not alone in this world and this is Good News. Why? Because all of life is a collaboration and God's mercy is our binding force and saving grace. Readings Numbers 21:4-9 Ephesians 2:1-10 John 3:14-21 Pulpit to Pew is a conversation between priest and parishioner, to understand how the message translates and to explore further the weekly Sunday sermon and lessons within the Episcopal tradition and daily life.
4 June 2017 - Rev. David Pileggi on Pentecost Sunday asks and then answers the questions, “What truth do we need to learn from the passage?” and “What is the outreach and mission as described in John’s gospel? The Holy Spirit is given to us for outreach to others. It is coming into and experiencing divine life and sharing it with others. Coming into an intimate relationship, a Trinitarian Intimacy. Participating in the life of Jesus who brings us to the Father by the Holy Spirit. To be cured we need eternal life. Life, as described in John’s gospel, is eternal life, intimate relationship, continuously with the Father through Jesus by the Spirit; Abiding in Him. Our effectiveness in the mission will depend on our consecration and holiness. Unity is not the end game; it is so we can reflect the reality of the trinity based on the truth Intimacy must ensure we live the way Jesus lived; God loves the hostile world and wants to redeem it. Jesus sets the model that says we need to be a forgiving and loving community. We can’t preach a message of forgiveness with un-forgiveness in out hearts. Readings: Numbers 11:24-30, John 20:19-23
"And I don't know how many of you've ever come up against people who will say, 'Have you been saved?' And finally I decided the answer would be, 'from what?'"
