Chris Maxwell's 12th book comes out October 1st. Each of the twelve chapters in the book, “Things We've Handed Down: Twelve Letters I Leave for You,” is written as a letter to a reader. The chapter titles are all book titles from books which have impacted Chris' life. He hopes to hand down to the next generation key life principles that he learned from the books. “Disappointment with God” by former Next Step guest Philip Yancey, “Wounds Are Where Light Enters” by Walter Wangerin Jr., “The Wounded Healer” by Henri J.M. Nouwen, “Life is Mostly Edges” by Calvin Miller, “Surprised by Joy” by C. S. Lewis, and “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction” by Eugene Peterson are just some of the chapters in this book.As a leader and a learner, what books have impacted your life? What lessons have you learned that you can “hand down” to others? How have disappointments and wounds brought you closer to God instead of farther from Him? How can we lead better by displaying love, acceptance, and forgiveness? Listen to the conversation. Pick up a copy of “Things We've Handed Down” and read it. Get copies for those you lead. Be sure you receive what's handed down to you and that you hand down God's love to others.Amazon: http://bit.ly/cmaxmanWebsite:chrismaxwell.me  Facebook: facebook.com/PauseWithChrisMaxwellTwitter:@CMaxManInstagram: CMaxMan

But these are not the highest forms of power. God's power is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor. 12:9). The power of the seed emerges only when the (wheat) seed dies.

Welcome to Day 1617 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomNeed for Status – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  Today is Day 1617 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from   Calvin Miller, and it is:  Careers, even religious careers, may become little more than forums for our own advancement. But how are we to deal with such ambition? Our longing after Christ must exceed our need for status in the world. Need for Status All of us crave to be accepted by others. Most of us yearn to have a level of status among our work associates, peers, friends, and family. It appears to be a burning need in our lives. I acknowledge that I struggle with the need for status, and it probably applies to you also. No career or leadership position is exempt, even pastors, priests, missionaries, and lay leaders within the church. For all of us who are Christ-followers, how do we reconcile this need for status with our desire to image God, as the perfect imager Jesus Christ did? In the New Testament Scripture, we certainly see that Jesus's closest companions and disciples struggled with the need for status. Think about the epic struggles and posturing between the ‘inner circle' of the disciples, Peter, James, and John. Think about the 12 sons of Jacob in the Old Testament who were constantly in a struggle for status to the point where they were willing to sell their brother Joseph into slavery. We are not immune to the same battle.  As with any area of life, the first step to overcome our intense need for status is to acknowledge that it is an issue and that we desire to become less controlled by it. As Christ-followers and fellow imagers of God, our desire to fulfill those roles must be stronger than our need for status in the world. It may not be easy, but it is possible. If we desire to serve effectively in God's kingdom on earth, we need to be willing to serve humbly. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+9%3A33-37&version=NLT (Mark 9:33-37) After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” But they didn't answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”  Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.” As you ponder another bit of wisdom from Gramps, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along with us tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' First Baptist Church of Arlington - FBCA Podcast

Dennis R Wiles FBC Arlington September , 220020 FALL 2020 SEPTEMBER 6 – OCTOBER 31, 2020 The Love of God: A Study of 1 John God: How Well Do You Know Him! 1 John 2:3-11 1 John 2:3-11 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them. How well do you know God? Hear the word of the LORD, you Israelites, because the LORD has a charge to bring against you who live in the land: There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. -Hosea 4:1 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. -Hosea 6:6 A little knowledge of God is worth more than a great deal of knowledge about God. One can know a great deal about God without much knowledge of him. I am sure that many of us have never really grasped this. We read books of theological exposition and apologetics. We dip into Christian history, and study the Christian creed. We learn to find our way around in the Scriptures. Others appreciate our interest in these things, and we find ourselves asked to give our opinion in public on this or that Christian question, to lead study groups, to give papers, to write articles, and generally to accept responsibility, informal if not formal, for acting as teachers and arbiters of orthodoxy in our own Christian circle. All very fine—yet interest in theology and knowledge about God, and the capacity to think clearly and talk well on Christian themes, is not at all the same thing as knowing him. -J.I. Packer, Knowing God How well do you know God? This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight.” -Jeremiah 9:23-24 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. -John 17:3 DESIRE – Knowing God creates a desire to serve and obey Him! DEMONSTRATION – Knowing God is demonstrated by our behavior. DISCIPLESHIP – Knowing God produces disciples who follow The Jesus Way! DARKNESS – Knowing God leads us out of darkness into light. How well do you know God? Real spiritual divers are so in love with the depths that they don’t spend much of their lives trying to make oceanography real in a world where birdbaths define the smaller passions. -Calvin Miller, Into the Depths of God
