Send Kris and Rob a Text Message! The Shocking Case of Helle Crafts: The Wood Chipper MurderOn the night of November 18, 1986, Helle Crafts was last seen by her friends and colleagues. She had confided in them about her concerns regarding her husband's infidelity and her intention to divorce him. When she didn't show up for work the next day and her friends couldn't reach her, worry began to set in.Richard Crafts claimed that Helle had flown to Denmark to visit her mother, but her friends and family knew this was unlikely. Helle had also recently hired a private investigator to follow Richard, gathering evidence of his extramarital affairs. This revelation painted Richard as a prime suspect in her sudden disappearance. The InvestigationDetective Henry Lee, renowned for his forensic expertise, played a pivotal role in unraveling the mystery. Initial searches of the Crafts' home revealed bloodstains on the mattress and bedding, but it wasn't until a snowplow driver came forward with a crucial tip that the investigation took a gruesome turn. The driver reported seeing Richard operating a wood chipper near Lake Zoar during a snowstorm around the time of Helle's disappearance. This led investigators to the lake, where they conducted an intensive search. What they found was both horrifying and groundbreaking. The EvidenceScattered along the banks of the lake were small fragments of steel, bone, and tissue. Forensic experts confirmed that these remains belonged to Helle Crafts. The discovery of a chainsaw with hair and tissue matching Helle's DNA, found in the nearby river, further solidified the case against Richard. The prosecution argued that Richard had struck Helle in the head with a blunt object, possibly while she was sleeping, then froze her body in a freezer before dismembering it with the chainsaw and disposing of the remains using the wood chipper. This method of disposal was unprecedented in criminal investigations at the time. The Trial and ConvictionThe trial of Richard Crafts was a landmark case in forensic science. It was one of the first to successfully prosecute a murder without a body, relying heavily on forensic evidence and expert testimony. The state's case was built on the meticulous reconstruction of the crime, demonstrating how Richard attempted to cover up his heinous act.In 1989, after a lengthy trial and a mistrial due to a hung jury, Richard Crafts was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison. His conviction marked a significant achievement in forensic investigation and set a precedent for future cases involving body disposal.Sources used for this episode:Support the Show.JOIN THE HITCHED 2 HOMICIDE IN-LAWS AND OUTLAWSSTART KRIS CALVERT'S BOOKS TODAY FOR FREEH2H WEBSITEH2H on TWITTERH2H on INSTA

It was one of the most gruesome murder stories in Connecticut history – in fact, in U.S. history. It was even the case where the idea for the stomach-churning scene of the movie Fargo originated. The woodchipper murder case in Newtown and Southbury Connecticut shocked the collective sensibilities of society when it was determined that Richard Crafts had used a woodchipper to dispose of his wife, Helle. Southbury Town Historian John Dwyer helps us revisit the details – the lead-up to the murder, how the case was broken and why the accused is now free to walk the streets.
We pick up where we left off in episode one. If you haven't listened yet, go listen to that first! Helle Crafts has been missing for several days at this point and the police finally take her disappearance seriously. Evidence begins to be gathered against her husband, Richard Crafts and it is damning. Two trials happen in the case and Richard is finally imprisoned for the murder of his wife. Police would eventually arrest and charge her husband, pilot Richard Crafts for her grisly murder in what became known as the "Wood Chipper Murder." However, while all eyes were fixed on the Crafts, an eerily similar case was developing just down the road.Thirty-five year old Regina Brown mysteriously vanished after being seen at New York's LaGuardia airport. Much like Helle Crafts, she too was a flight attendant and mother of three married to a pilot. She lived less than three miles from the Crafts, in Newtown, Connecticut, and vanished just four months after Helle.Yet there were no major headlines for Regina, without the headline stealing aspects of a gruesome crime and an arrest, few articles were dedicated to her disappearance. When the Newtown Police began investigating they never imagined what they'd uncover; a life lived in fear, a woman subjected to brutal domestic violence and an estranged husband with a bizarre list of accusations against his missing wife.Regina had set a plan into motion, one which would allow her to finally escape from the nightmare in which she lived. However, on March 26th, 1987, as she was making her final preparations someone got to her before she could get away. If there was one thing Helle Crafts’ friends knew for certain, it was that Helle’s husband Richard was a violent sketch ball. So when she didn’t show up for work one day, they got suspicious. Richard’s explanations were less than reassuring. Was she visiting her mother in Denmark? Or was she with a friend on vacation? The story kept changing, but one thing remained the same — Helle was nowhere to be found. Then Brandi continues her Johnson County, Kansas, series with a robbery gone terribly wrong. It all started at the She’s a Pistol gun store in Shawnee, Kansas. Becky Bieker owned the store with her husband Jon. She was behind the counter on January 9, 2015 when four teenagers entered the store. Two of them were armed. One of the teens punched Becky, knocking her unconscious. Shortly afterward, Jon came out of a back room, gun drawn. A gun battle ensued. Later, one of the teens’ lawyers mounted an… interesting legal defense. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases.
