Todd Ault interviews Frank Lorenzo, the former CEO of Continental Airlines, Eastern Airlines, and Texas Air, and the author of Flying for Peanuts: Tough Deals, Steep Bargains, and Revolution in the Skies. This compelling business memoir provides an in-depth look at the airline deregulation years, detailing the high-stakes negotiations that contributed to Lorenzo's success. The book includes encounters with Carl Icahn and features a chapter dedicated to the sale of the Eastern Airlines Shuttle to Donald Trump, which eventually became the troubled Trump Shuttle. Don't miss this exciting interview with Frank Lorenzo, where he discusses the origins of the peanut fares experiment and the real reason behind the similarity between the artwork on the wings of United and Continental Airlines. "Frank Lorenzo revolutionized an entire business category to something fairly biblical." - Todd Ault "When I was working at TWA, I remember some of the guys telling me stories about Howard Hughes commandeering some of the new airplanes, taking one of [the airplanes] to the Bahamas and using it as a hotel, experimenting with it to see what the airplane was like." - Frank Lorenzo
On January 29th, 1972, a tragedy occurred over the skies of Florida when Eastern Airlines Flight 401 crashed into Miami's Everglades. The story of the accident itself is terrifying enough, but it's the events that happened on board several specific aircrafts in Eastern Airlines fleet in the months afterwards that have never been explained. Episode 113: Henry Woodman & His Father's Book, The Reincarnation of Marie: A Love Reborn in Paris from the Pages of History ABOUT HENRY Henry Woodman is a Florida native and a graduate of the University of Arizona for his bachelors and Nova Southeaster for his MBA. He is trilingual, speaking English, Spanish, and French, and is a natural entrepreneur. In 1984, Woodman and his partner formed WoodMark Productions to pursue two of his passions -- film production and travel. He and the film crew would travel the world producing travel films for leading travel destinations worldwide on behalf of major travel companies including American Airlines, American Express, Eastern Airlines, government tourism boards, and leading international cruise lines. After a decade of travels, he settled in Santiago, Chile for two years to produce Machos, a local game show for the younger demographic. In 1997 he founded World Travelvision (WTV), a content provider for Internet Travel and Tourism. WTV pioneered the production and distribution of Digital Brochures and Virtual Reality 360°Panormaic Photography. In 2004, Woodman pivoted WTV to a technology company and formed IcePortal (ICE). ICE was founded to solve a problem in the newly formed online hospitality distribution industry - management and distribution of visuals to online distribution channels. ICE helps hotels and resorts, manage, and deliver their visuals to 1000s of online travel related websites. In 2019 Woodman exited the company. Woodman's commitment found its roots in television and film production and earned him four local area Emmy nominations. Finally, in 1988, Woodman acquired the rights to a book which he just published and plans to develop into a series for streaming TV. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We discuss invaluable insights into navigating the intricacies of travel operations. From crafting robust crisis management frameworks to redefining the role of travel advisors in the digital age, a compelling exploration of the evolution of the travel industry and strategies for success in a constantly evolving landscape. --- Care for Customers in Crises with Chris Dane Good day, dear listeners. Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast, and my guest is Chris Dane, President of Hickory Global Partners, an industry-leading global alliance for corporate travel organizations and corporate travel departments. Chris, welcome to the show. Thank you, Steve, for having me. Well, I don't often have guests from the corporate travel industry. I think I had one in the last 12 months, 15 months. So I'm curious about what you brought for us. So let's start with how did you get into corporate travel in the first place and rose to run a premier organization in the field? Well, actually, this May will be my 50th anniversary of travel, which is another way of saying I'm old and still working. And that's only because I love it. I started in the airline business, actually I was raised in the travel industry. My father was with Eastern Airlines, so I never wanted to pay for air travel, so I started out of college with predecessor to Frontier Airlines, as you would know it today. Later spent 20 years with American Airlines, and then left there to run Delta Airlines Vacations. That's a package tour operator. And then left that to be one of the founders of a company called vacation.com, where we went out and bought six US and one Canadian consortium, which is a group of travel agents, a buying club, think of it. In this particular case, it's specialized in leisure. We sold it two years later to Amadeus. And then I ended up my first consulting gig, also my most lucrative, was as a friend of mine called me, said, look, these are really bright Harvard MBAs. I think they could use your help. He says, I don't think the model makes sense, but my wife convinced me to invest a lot of money in it. And so tell me what you think, and I'll set up an interview. They'll see if they think you're okay, and you can see if what they're doing makes sense. Well, that little startup that he talked about was a little company called TripAdvisor.Share on X Wow. And as you know, that went on to do great things. They sold it to Expedia, and then they spun off on their own. And so that was really a pretty exciting time. Then I went to work for a predecessor to this company, Hickory Global Partners, and then I left that to go run, which was my first foray into corporate travel. This is like ‘05, ‘06. Then I went to work for, at that time, the third largest travel management company in the world, publicly held on the London Exchange. It was called Hogg Robinson Group. I left there to come here, Hickory Global Partners, and then since I've been here, we've purchased a couple of other companies that I also have the pleasure of making contributions to. One is a company that is independent contractors, specializes in leisure, and it's called IntelliTravel. And it's independent contractors. We teach them to travel business so they can book their friends and relatives on trips and earn money in the process. And then just recently we bought a MICE company, a Meeting Incentive Corporate Event Company, and I'm on the board of that company. So while I've been in the business 50 years, I now have three jobs. Okay, well, that keeps you young, I guess. I hope. That's a good way to do it. So I never thought that MICE was a really attractive thing for the travel industry, but it's good to learn that. So let's talk about some of your experiences that I think could be interesting for our l...

Welcome to Ground Zero, where we explore the mysterious world of paranormal phenomena. Tonight, we delve into one of the most infamous airline disasters in history: Flight 401. On December 29, 1972, this Eastern Airlines flight crashed into a swamp near Miami International Airport due to a malfunctioning landing gear light and other distractions. The accident resulted in the death of 32 people, making it the second deadliest single aircraft disaster in United States history. But that's not all - after the crash, strange stories began to circulate amongst the airline community about ghostly encounters with the dead crew of Flight 401. And it gets even more eerie - undamaged parts from the crashed plane were recycled into other Eastern L-1011 Tristar jets that seemed to produce the largest concentrations of hauntings and sightings of the dead crewmen.Join us as we talk with paranormal investigators Steve Shippy and Cindy Kaza about this fascinating case, and hear their insights into what may be causing these strange occurrences. Are they simply coincidences or is there something more sinister at play? Tune in to "Ground Zero" for a chilling exploration of the world beyond the veil.Liking this episode? Chris Finlay began investing in real estate early in his career as a commercial airline pilot with Eastern Airlines. Casual investing soon evolved into a major commercial real estate business, and in 1983 Chris resigned from Eastern to concentrate exclusively on the Finlay Company. During the ensuing years, Chris grew the company into one of the largest real estate firms in New England. In 1990, he began to focus on real estate development and over the next fifteen years developed, constructed, and managed approximately 40 multifamily and senior housing communities and luxury condominiums. The Great Recession of 2008 provided numerous investment opportunities in the multifamily arena, and after a few years of investing for his own account, Chris established Lloyd Jones to offer outside investors an opportunity to participate in his acquisitions. A few years later, he added senior living and development subsidiaries to capitalize on the exploding demand for senior housing. More recently, seeing acquisition opportunities in the hospitality industry, he added a hotel investment division. Today, Chris leverages his successful 43-year track record and experience to lead Lloyd Jones and all its subsidiaries as chairman and CEO. Chris's education includes Upper Canada College and post-graduate studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He has also completed extensive industry training. He is on the board of the National Multifamily Housing Council, a member of The American Seniors Housing Association, and a strong supporter of Shelters to Shutters, a non-profit organized to connect individuals facing homelessness to opportunities for employment and housing within the multifamily community. What You Will Learn: Who is Christopher Finlay? How did he get involved with the real estate industry? How does multi-family bloom? What are the certain parts of the country that they are focusing on? Christopher shares his thoughts about the buying opportunities now. What is the timeline as far as the baby boomer generation and that increase in demand for senior housing? It's hard to beat multi-family or rental housing as an investment. Influenced by his father-in-law, Chris made his first investment in an avocado grove in South Florida, marking the start of his illustrious career in real estate. In 1980, Chris established his commercial real estate brokerage firm, which eventually evolved into a successful multifamily and senior housing investment company. Despite starting in a smaller market, Chris managed to overcome challenges through his innovative three-part business model, enabling his firm to serve as an asset manager for the FDIC.The strategic shift towards investing rather than building in 2010, and the golden opportunity presented by the post-Covid market to pivot to senior housing, is testament to Chris's forward-thinking approach. This interview offers valuable insights into these strategic decisions, making it a must-listen for anyone interested in real estate investment trends. The conversation also delves into the complexities of transitioning to the senior living asset class, with a special focus on operations. John Goglia, Greg Feith, and Todd Curtis discuss the 1985 crash of an Eastern Airlines 727 in the mountains of Bolivia. Greg was an on-site NTSB investigator for the crash that was the start of one of the worst commercial aviation accident years in history. Greg led an expedition to the Andes Mountains to attempt to retrieve the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder. He offers a preview of a two-hour documentary that will focus on the accident. They also discuss a variety of ground incidents that have led to injuries and fatalities on the ramp. One in Washington DC involved a baggage handler who walked into a propeller. In another, another ground crew was killed by an airplane engine. Greg and John worked an accident in El Paso, Texas where a mechanic working on an engine cowling was killed. His hat came loose and he was sucked into the engine. They share lessons that everyone who works around airplanes should follow. Ground equipment, jetways and ramps all present situations that demand safety awareness. The Ghosts of Eastern Flight 401 SCARY TRUE STORYIn December 1972, there was a deadly air crash in Florida's Everglades. But that wasn't the end of the story…It was Christmas 1972 and passengers and crew onboard Eastern Airlines Flight 401 were making the relatively short journey between New York and Florida. They would never arrive. This tragic air crash was the most deadly ever to have occurred in the US at the time and generated heartbreaking stories of loss, heroism and love. However, it also created a ghost story that has never really been explained to this day. Here, we'll take a closer look.A routine flightThe aircraft assigned to Eastern Airlines Flight 401 that December 29th was an L-1011 from Lockheed, often referred to as a Whisperliner due to its quiet engines. It had been cleared for a 9PM departure from New York's JFK airport to Miami, with Captain Robert Loft at the helm and Albert John Stockstill, a former Air Force flier, as his co-pilot.Also on board were 25-year Eastern veteran Donald Louis Repo as engineer and second officer, maintenance specialist Angelo Donadeo, and Warren Terry, who was off-duty but hitching a ride to return from a duty assignment. The manifest listed 153 passengers, but there were in fact 160 on board, as well as the close-knit cabin crew that included 25-year-old Beverly Raposa and her colleague Mercedes ‘Mercy' Ruiz. The flight was uneventful and had crossed the Palmetto Expressway as it cruised over West Palm Beach to Miami, with the captain already having told his passengers the weather in the beach-side city as he made preparations to land.Trouble arisesIt was then, just before 11:40 PM, that a problem arose in the cockpit. Stockstill voiced his concern that a light had not come on to show the landing gear in the plane's nose was lowered as it should be.Loft tried again to lower it, but nothing had apparently happened. The crew made a U-turn and told air traffic controllers they would circle again as they attempted to ensure the landing gear was correctly lowered. They put the aircraft on autopilot and Loft climbed down into the avionics bay, a space beneath the flight deck, to see if he could personally check what was going on. Meanwhile, the others struggled with the cockpit display to see if the fault lay with one of its tiny light bulbs.Suddenly, the cockpit voice recorder captured a chilling phrase from Stockstill:“We did something to the altitude.”The plane should have been at 2,000 ft, but it had somehow dropped dramatically. A moment later, the voice recorder captured Loft's voice:“Hey, what's happening here?”The phrase would be the last communication to come from Flight 401.Devastating crash — and desperate rescue missionAt 11:43 PM, Miami air traffic control got a message from another aircraft to say they had seen an explosion close by. Flight 401 had crashed in the Everglades at 227 miles per hour, cartwheeling into the swampy water after the left wingtip hit the ground first. The plane broke up into several sections upon impact and travelled more than a third of a mile before finally coming to a halt.First on the scene was a local man named Robert Marquis, who had been trapping frogs with a friend on an airboat when he saw an orange fireball and knew instantly he was witnessing a plane crash. He turned his pleasure craft and swung towards the crash site, as did the Coastguard on a nearby helicopter.Meanwhile, flight attendant Beverly Raposa had survived the crash and found herself flung into the mud of the Everglades. In a stoic display of professionalism, she gathered other survivors around her and shouted for more to come towards the sound of her voice. After realising she was covered in jet fuel, she implored everyone not to strike matches for light and sang Christmas carols in a bid to keep their spirits up.“These were my people. They were my responsibility, and this was my job as a flight attendant,” she later told the Official Eastern Airlines Flight 401 website. The Coastguard's helicopter tracked down the survivors after Mr Marquis swung his lamp around to attract attention, and rescue vehicles began to gather them up via a flood control levee.Aftermath and investigationIn total, 75 passengers and crew survived. The eventual death toll would be 103, with some succumbing to their wounds after the event. Many drowned in the water of the Everglades before rescuers could reach them.Stockstill was killed on impact and Captain Loft died in the wreckage of the flight deck. Repo survived the initial crash, but died later in hospital. Technical officer Donadeo, who was in the avionics bay with Repo when the plane went down, survived. Two of the ten flight attendants also perished. An investigation was immediately launched into what happened that fateful night using the cockpit voice recorder. It was found that Stockstill had put the plane on autopilot after attempting to lower the landing gear and that it had continued its trajectory for 80 seconds.A sudden descent of 100 ft occurred, followed by two minutes of steady flight. After this, the aircraft began to descend so gradually as to be imperceptible before the pilots saw they were far too low. Although they tried to pull up, it was too late and the wing hit the water.Investigators realised the confusion in the cockpit over the landing gear light must have been enough to distract the pilots and mean an altitude warning chime wasn't heard. As to why the aircraft began to descend at all, other Eastern pilots testified to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) that their altitude hold function could be disengaged by bumping the control column. The NTSB therefore theorised that Loft had probably nudged the control column as he turned to talk to Repo about going down into the avionics bay to check the landing gear, which accidentally nudged the aircraft into a lower trajectory that it then automatically maintained. In a sad twist, the landing gear was found to be down exactly as it should have been, meaning the crash was effectively caused by two burnt out light bulbs.Officially, the NTSB cited pilot error, adding: “Preoccupation with a malfunction of the nose landing gear position indicating system distracted the crew's attention from the instruments and allowed the descent to go unnoticed.”Eastern Flight 401 was the first jumbo jet to crash and the loss of life was the worst in US civil aviation history at the time. Not the end of the story — ghosts in the machine? However, this wasn't the last that was to be heard of the doomed flight and its lost crew members. It was widely reported that several parts of the aircraft were salvaged from the crash site and returned to the manufacturer to be used again on other L1011s.Soon after, stories began to emerge that passengers and crew members on other Eastern flights were being visited by some of those who had died. At JFK, a boarding crew saw Loft sitting in the flight deck dressed in his uniform. Not realising who he was, they talked to him for a few moments before he allegedly disappeared in front of their eyes. The crew was so shaken that the flight had to be cancelled. On another occasion, a flight engineer saw Don Repo and the apparition told him he had already done the pre-flight checks before he vanished. During a flight from Atlanta to Miami, a crew heard knocking coming from the avionics hold and opened it to see the face of Repo looking back out at them.Perhaps the most startling episode was when a flight attendant on a trip from Mexico City to JFK saw Don Repo's face reflected in an oven door and heard him tell her to beware of fire. As the plane climbed, the engine indeed caught fire and the pilot was forced to shut it down and make an emergency landing back at the airport. Fortunately, no one was hurt. All in all, there were more than 20 incidents in which people reported having seen ghostly apparitions of dead Flight 401 crew members. Sightings had become so commonplace during 1973 that a report was published about them the following year in the US Flight Safety Foundation newsletter.Keen to shut down the paranormal tales, Eastern Airlines is said to have removed all log books in which ghost sightings were recorded and warned employees who perpetuated the stories they could face dismissal.Eastern Air Lines CEO (and former Apollo astronaut) Frank Borman spoke out to say the reports of sightings were “garbage” and a book published in 1980 called From the Captain to the Colonel: An Informal History of Eastern Airlines insisted no parts were ever salvaged from Flight 401 for reuse. In an interview with Eliot Kleinberg of the Palm Beach Post in 1997, Eastern's public relations representative Jim Ashlock also said the ghost stories were made up and that the airline had never hidden flight logs or intimidated witnesses. However, Mr Kleinberg said Don Repo's son Jay had told him he believed the stories about his father's ghost returning. He reportedly claimed he had inexplicably found a pair of Eastern Airlines wings in a Miami hotel room, which he took as a supernatural sign of visitation. Some still insist salvaged parts were behind the sightings of Captain Loft and his dead colleagues months after the loss of flight 401, and that Eastern Airlines

Some still insist salvaged parts were behind the sightings of Captain Loft and his dead colleagues months after the loss of flight 401, and that Eastern Airlines w
In this episode we continue to celebrate Black History Month and are joined by veteran Pan Am pilots Captain Perry Jones and Ed Moon.Perry was the first African American to be hired by Pan Am in late 1965 and Ed was the third to be hired in early 1967. The second African American hired by Pan Am was Otis Benjamin Young in 1966. "O.B.," as he was affectionally referred to, was born in 1938 and graduated from Howard University and then served in the United States Air Force. After Pan Am, he flew for Delta Airlines until retirement. Unfortunately, Captain Young passed away on June 9, 2021.These gentlemen were legendary trailblazers at the height of the civil right movement in the 1960s. All three left a lasting legacy at Pan Am, paved the way for other people of color and beyond, and were part of the change that transformed the commercial aviation community. In 1976, Benjamin Thomas, an Eastern Airlines pilot, organized a meeting that formed the Organization of Black Airline Pilots, now called the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, to address discrimination in the airline industry.Ed Moon was a one of the 38 founders of the organization and both Perry and Ed served as president and board chair of the organization through the years.Today, the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals or OBAP for short, is a world-leading non-profit organization that changes lives by creating a pathway to success through educating youth, communities, and professionals—shaping an aerospace industry as diverse as the people they serve. For more information on OBAP, visit their website at obap.org.

The Ghosts of Eastern Flight 401 SCARY TRUE GHOST STORYIn December 1972, there was a deadly air crash in Florida's Everglades. In 1972, Eastern Airlines Flight 401 crashed in the Florida Everglades, killing more than 100 people, including the pilot and crew. That story on its own would be incredibly tragic. But in the months that followed, several Eastern Airlines employees and passengers began reporting that they had begun seeing the ghosts of Flight 401 on other planes.
