Biodiverse spaces are important not only for healthy ecosystems but they also bring tangible benefits for our mental wellness as well. Unfortunately new data shows that some of our most loved garden visitors – the Lepidoptera, or butterflies and moths – are in alarming decline. We'll be finding out from Dr Richard Fox, Head of Science at Butterfly Conservation, how gardeners can give them the boost they need. Ed Cooper from the trials team down at RHS Garden Wisley shows us another way of welcoming in not only butterflies and moths, but a whole host of other wildlife as well, with advice on sowing annual and perennial wildflower meadows. And finally, we find out how to maximise our outdoor spaces for our four legged friends, with Lead Horticulturist Dawn Grehan, at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.   Host: Gareth Richards   Contributors: Dr Richard Fox, Ed Cooper, Dawn Grehan Links:  Butterfly Conservation Butterfly recording and monitoring RHS Plants for Pollinators RHS Chelsea Flower Show How to create a pet-friendly garden Potentially harmful garden plants

Once-common butterflies, like the small tortoiseshell, the chalkhill blue and the small copper, had their worst year ever in 2024. The latest figures show, for the first time, more than half the UK's butterfly species are now in long-term decline. Dr Richard Fox from the charity Butterfly Conservation described the figures as devastating. But he said people could make an immediate difference by not cutting their grass between April and September to create more habitats for butterflies and other species to thrive.

Every member of Noemie Fox's family is an Olympic athlete. Her mother, Myriam Fox-Jerusalmi, won bronze in 1996 for canoeing slalom (K1), while their father Richard Fox represented Britain for the same event in 1992. Her sister Jess, 30, made her Olympic debut as an 18-year-old at the 2012 London Games, going on to compete at Rio, Tokyo and Paris and winning six medals including three gold. Although Noemie, 27, has been competing at the international level since 2013, she has previously missed out on a spot on the Olympic team because Australia's only slot went to Jess. But a new Olympic event introduced this year — the kayak cross — finally gave Noemie a chance to represent her country. On her return from Paris, Noemie talks to Charis Chang about what it's like to finally join the rest of her family, not just as an Olympian but as a gold medallist.

Congress is fearful of TikTok's influence, but America's young people increasingly see it as a key platform for learning about and spreading political ideas. Will TikTok get young people engaged in the 2024 election or serve as another distraction? Neta Kligler-Vilenchik finds that young people embody an expressive citizenship, where you should speak out if you see injustice, and have found TikTok to be a fruitful platform. But she doubts that older politicians have figured out how to use it for effective persuasion. Richard Fox finds that TikTok users are liberal and more active, online and offline. But they take politics less seriously. He sees the same complaints about media change that scholars have been making for generations: we're favoring shorter, less substantive, and emotional clips over real learning. They both say we should be skeptical of TikTok remaking politics but that we should listen to young people, who see real change.

Fox breaking down the stats confirmed that the Zags did an excellent job executing the scouting plans and were prepared to play on both ends.Kansas game was so high level on both ends throughout the game - because as Meehan tweeted "are you not entertained?"  The Jayhawks were higher ranked with a few pros and all Americans, the Zags pulled away in the 2nd half.  Zags shot 67% and Jayhawks shot 28% in the second half and the Zags were great at keeping the ball out of Dickinson's hands. However, job one this time around is to try and shut down 7'4"  Zach Edey...a bad night for him is a double double bc he's gonna score, but attention to the rest of the Purdue team needs to be paid. The guys are predicting a win. Spokesman-Review's Jim Meehan and Zags Bulldog alum and tv commentator Richard Fox discuss how GU makes up a little ground each week in the brackets...they digest and discuss a ton of stats as the Bulldogs played with better teams.Looking ahead to Portland - pieces aren't too bad as they are on their home court, but they may not be able to defend Gonzaga if the Bulldogs hit their outside shots. Santa Clara is Saturday night back at the Kennell - last time they met, GU lost in the end. Zags strength inside can help when the Broncos come to town. Also of note at the Kennell is Anton Watson's senior night this week. Local hero, Swiss Army knife of a Zag, its so rare for a player in today's college basketball era to be a winner for the program over his entire career at Gonzaga.

Listen in to The Spokesman-Review's Jim Meehan and GU Zags alum/tv analyst Richard Fox conversation about the Gonzaga University Men's Basketball Team....GU played extremely well against LMU, then ended with a bad scene with St Mary's on Saturday night. Zags fell to 25th...while the loss didn't impact their computer metrics, the brackets were updated and there were no Zags to be found. IT makes the "at large" path extremely difficult with no Quad 1 wins. The week that was - domination against LMU which took both Jim and Richard by surprise. When you get rolled as badly as LMU did...in Division I, coaches shouldnt worry about effort, but that was what was lacking in that game. Both Zag Insiders were tuned out with 8 minutes left in the game....But that St Mary's game...GU lost their way on both ends of the floor in the second half. That's not even counting the referee reviews...which did not cost GU the game. St Mary's had an improved game with solid match ups. Saturday overall was a great day for collegiate basketball.Looking ahead - how will GU rebound after the St Mary's gut punch?

The Spokesman-Review's Jim Meehan and Gonzaga University alum/broadcaster Richard Fox recap the Hawaii trip/Maui Invitational - and adjustments that need to be made in the upcoming games for the GU Men's Basketball team. The Purdue game was not out of reach. The stat sheet was really even for both teams, and the difference really came down to shot quality. GU showed they could play with anybody. The Zags shot down the Orange offense in their follow up game - happening not even 16 hours after the final buzzer from the Purdue loss - using a bigger line up, the Zags dominated the boards. While the game was not stress free, GU was the better team for 40 minutes. The game also was the launch of the Anton Watson awakening.... UCLA game showed what the GU team can do with Watson's overall influence leading the charge. While the ref whistles are still ringing in Meehan's ears, Fox states that if Watson can maintain the aggressiveness and efficiency with his shot selection, Anton Watson has the potential to be GU's leading scorer by the end of the year.In what to look for GU upcoming - Meehan noted the displays of Coach Mark Few from the sidelines as turnovers mounted was highly entertaining. Fox also emphasized GU has to take care of the ball - with guards having an almost even number of assists and turnovers, that has to change. Also noted was how unusual it is to have the GU defense be ahead of the offense this early in the season. That needs to even out as well. Quick looks at upcoming match ups with the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners and USC in LV..the opportunity for GU to go deeper in the bench and tighten things up.
