Paradise Lost/Paradise Regained: The Role of Poetry in Mental Health Awareness

Poetry plays a vital role in mental health awareness by providing a creative outlet for individuals to express their emotions and experiences related to mental health. It offers a means of self-expression and catharsis, allowing individuals to process their feelings and promote their overall well-being. Through personal poems, poetry helps break the stigma surrounding mental health, humanizing the experiences and encouraging open conversations. It creates a sense of community, connecting individuals with similar struggles, fostering support and understanding. Poetry also educates and raises awareness about mental health conditions, dispelling misconceptions and promoting empathy. Its emotional resonance fosters empathy and a deeper understanding of mental health complexities. Poetry empowers individuals, inspiring them to find their voice and demonstrate resilience, while showing others that recovery and growth are possible. Poetry contributes to a compassionate and understanding society through its role in mental health awareness. "Paradise Lost" for many brings back memories of reading John Milton's epic poem written in 1667. Milton's poem explores morality, humanity, and man's fall. These same words can also serve as a metaphor for the feelings of guilt, despair, and inner turmoil that can exist when people are faced with mental health issues. As a companion poem to "Paradise Lost," "Paradise Regained" (1671) explores themes of redemption, temptation, and the triumph of good over evil. It is also possible to use the words Paradise Regained metaphorically to describe the sense of fulfillment people experience when they are able to cope with and manage mental health issues through constructive means. Featured Poets: Ahmad Alkhatat, Skaja Evens, Benjamin Cherif-Goldberg, Richard Harries, Jessica Philie Park, Nicholas Michael Ravnikar, Lisa Simmons and David Thurston.

Good morning. I first got to know Desmond Tutu when I was Dean of King's College, London and he came to give a lecture. He told us about his time there as a student: how he liked nothing better than to go out into the Street, find a policeman, and walk round him, simply enjoying the fact that he was in a free country and the police were not enemies. Archbishop Tutu's mother was a cleaner and the young Desmond was first attracted to the Christian faith by seeing the great Father Trevor Huddleston lift his hat to her every time he passed. This led to the Christian faith becoming the mainspring of his life, and prayer being absolutely fundamental to it. He insisted on beginning every day with a good period of meditation and public prayer before any gathering was entirely natural to him. It was this spiritual life that lay behind his outspoken bravery during the apartheid years when he became the voice of the voiceless in the townships. It was also shown in acts of personal courage. In 1985 a black man accused of being an informer had his car burnt by a mob who were about to throw him on it, as they said, to make a funeral pyre. Desmond Tutu dragged the man away against the howls of those who wanted him killed. But his Christian faith not only led him to condemn injustice wherever it occurred but also taught him to love his enemies. As he said “Enemies are always friends waiting to be made.” And this points to his other great achievement, chairing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission after the end of Apartheid-a hugely ambitious, painful process of trying to tell the truth of what happened and work through to new better set of relationships. I will remember his bravery, desire for reconciliation, his deep spirituality, his personal courtesy to everyone and of course his humour. I have seen him literally roll around the floor with laughter, and he captivated every audience with his smile and humour, often with a sharp political thrust. As he used to joke: “When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said 'Let us pray.' We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.” A favourite personal memory is spending an evening in his house in Soweto at the height of Apartheid-him drinking rum and coca cola, his standard drink- watching a satirical TV series. One scene showed the Second Coming-which turned out to be of Desmond Tutu himself. I imagine him still laughing now as he is gathered into that heavenly embrace. At a time when it is so easy to be depressed by human behaviour he was someone who showed us another possibility, a different model of what it is to be a human being.

This week, Ed Thornton talks to the Rt Revd David Wilbourne about his biography of John Habgood, a former Archbishop of York, who died last year, aged 91. The book is called Just John: The authorized biography of John Habgood, Archbishop of York, 1983-1995 (SPCK), and is available from the Church Times Bookshop for the special price of £16. In an obituary published in the Church Times, Rupert Shortt describes Habgood as “the outstanding British Anglican leader of his generation, and perhaps the country's most distinguished churchman tout court”. He has been described by several people as “the best Archbishop of Canterbury we never had”. In a review of Just John published in the Church Times, Richard Harries writes: “David Wilbourne, who was Habgood's chaplain for four years, and whose writing is well known to readers of the Church Times, has written an informative and attractive life of his former boss, which will be essential reading for anyone who wants to understand this turbulent period better. . . “Wilbourne follows Habgood's career as a theological teacher, ecumenist, writer, and church leader, underlining his key part, for example, in liturgical revision, and especially on the ordination of women. . . “Wilbourne has given us a warm picture of an estimable human being and a deeply serious Christian.” Get the Church Times delivered for 10 weeks for just £10: www.churchtimes.co.uk/10-weeks

“You’re joking – not another one!” That was Brenda from Bristol, back in 2017 when Theresa May surprised the country with a snap poll. A penny for Brenda’s thoughts as we climb aboard the roller-coaster for our third general election in four years. The pundits are predicting only its unpredictability. The parties are fractured and fraught, the voters are frustrated and fatigued, and Brexit prances through the pantomime. The old safe-seat certainties are crumbling. Campaigners on all sides have been encouraging tactical voting to stop the opposition at all costs. Is that morally acceptable, or should we vote for the candidate we most closely support, even if they have no chance of winning? If our long-held tribal loyalties seem less certain, is that good or bad? Does it shake up candidate complacency or threaten community interests? Is it OK to stand in the voting booth and ask ‘What’s in it for me?’ or are we there on behalf of all humanity? Perhaps the question is not ‘How should I vote?’, but ‘Why should I bother?’ People fought and died for our right to vote, so is it a moral duty to go to the polling station, even if we spoil our ballot? Or is it wrong to criticise those who stay at home on election day, nursing their anger or their apathy? Featuring Dr Lisa McKenzie, Alan Hamlin, Richard Harries and Professor Lea Yp. Producer: Dan Tierney.

In his new book, Haunted by Christ, Richard Harries explores the role of faith in the lives of twenty novelists and poets. Non-believers like Samuel Beckett and Philip Pullman as well as believers like T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden all struggled with faith. At a time when religions language is meaningless or feels stale for many, we can rediscover its freshness and force in the works of novelists and poets. Lord Harries will be in conversation with Alec Ryrie, the new Gresham Professor of Divinity.A lecture by The Rt Revd Lord Harries and Professor Alec Ryrie 25 October 2018The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/modern-writers-struggle-for-faithGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Life is at once wonderful and terrible, beautiful and appalling. It is one of the greatest stumbling blocks to faith for the believer and the non-believer alike. How can we live with this contradiction? And how can we believe in a just and loving God in the face of all the evils of the world? Richard Harries, former Bishop of Oxford, and Loretta Minghella, the Chief Executive of Christian Aid, speak about the reality of suffering and evil in the world, and how in the face of it we can possibly live lives of hope and believe in a God of love.
