As we sit here only mere weeks after Matt Cameron stepped down as Pearl Jam's drummer after 27 years, it's completely understandable to be a little bit anxious for what the future of this band holds. While Cameron has been a staple since taking over for Jack Irons in 1998, there were a very small handful of times that we got to witness the band perform shows without his presence. In 2022, Cameron had to pause on touring in order to deal with a positive covid test. The band had about 24 hours to scramble and plan with the knowledge that he wasn't going to be available, so in stepped three drummers to help - Josh Klinghoffer who had just joined the band a year prior and was opening the show with solo material, long time friend and bandmate of Jeff Ament's in RNDM, Richard Stuverud, and a lucky fan who was plucked out of the crowd to be involved with a once and a lifetime experience named Josh Arroyo. After the first Oakland show in 2022, we got the opportunity to interview Josh which you can listen to here: https://liveon4legs.com/podcast/pearl-jam-fan-profile-josh-arroyo/ Since that time, Josh has become a great friend to the podcast and community, and we're thankful to have him join us on this episode to discuss the departure of Matt Cameron, and also get to hear another side of the story that he didn't get to share in our original interview. He'll take us through his backstage tryout and how the Pearl Jam security team and management knew him prior to his appearance on Ledbetter. He'll also share stories of mingling with Ed at Bridge School and Ohana shows, and he'll share his opinion on who he thinks the next drummer for Pearl Jam will be. We'll also run down the setlist and talk about Rockin In The Free World opening a show for the first ever time, the origins behind Nothingman in connection with Richard Stuverud, and what to be prepared for as we move into a new chapter of Pearl Jam without Matt Cameron.

In this episode we talk with Joseph Arthur, a renowned musician and painter. We learn that his first love was music, that he started young, and that he was discovered and signed by Peter Gabriel on Peter Gabriel's record company, Real World. A little research tells us that he's played with some other big names, that he's been part of the bands, Fistfull of Mercy, and RNDM, and that he's made quite a name for himself playing his solo music. He's also a visual artist, having been nominated for best album design for his album, Vacancy, he's exhibited internationally and has published a book featuring is visual artwork. Joseph shares quite a bit about his beliefs and concerns for a world where people are not nearly as free as they might think they are, and we follow the Matrix rabbit-hole for a while as we are also reminded by Joesph himself that he was "cancelled," (for speaking out against the COVID 19 vaccine), but it has been that experience that has helped him feel free and most able to do what he wants. To learn more about Joseph Arthur, check out his website at http://josepharthur.com/ where you can find links to all his other social media. If you've watched previous episodes of (*both laugh*) or if you've heard me guest on other podcasts or if you know me personally, you know that Pearl Jam has been a huge part of my musical journey. "Ten," which turns thirty years old this time next month, struck at exactly the right time in my formative years. The shockwave is still being felt, to say the least. Pearl Jam were very honestly the band that really ushered in my love of punk rock, in part through their very public love of bands like Dead Kennedys and Bad Religion and Social D and Dead Boys and obviously The Clash and Ramones. As I one-time aspiring bass player, it was Jeff Ament whose style got me to buy my first bass when I was a teenager (an Alvarez Dana bass, if you're interested). I've not only followed Pearl Jam far and wide over the last three decades, but I've followed Jeff's solo career and side projects (Three Fish, Tres Mts., RNDM, etc) along the way. His songs are always intricate and textured and unique and pull from a variety of influences. Next month, Ament will release a new solo full length. Entitled "I Should Be Outside," it was written and recorded entirely during COVID-related quarantine. But it's also not the only material he's put out during this time, as it follows last year's blistering "American Death Squad" EP and a new project called Deaf Charlie that features Fitz and the Tantrums' John Wicks on drums. This was immensely entertaining and meaningful for me, and I hope that came across. I was lucky enough to meet Jeff once in passing at an RNDM show on a snowy November night in Boston (there's a picture of that meeting in the intro and over my right shoulder during our chat here) and I thought that was one of the coolest things that had ever happened to me that didn't involve marriage or the birth of my kid. This was cooler. Thanks Jeff. And yes, don't worry Pearl Jam fans...we talked a lot about PJ and songwriting history and all the "how the sausage is made" stuff!
