Mijn familie aan moederskant bestond voornamelijk uit zeelui. We waren met vier broers en allen ondergingen we de aantrekkingskracht die de zee, deze wrede verleidster, op veel mannen uitoefent. Vooral mijn oudste broer Léonce en ikzelf waren getroffen door deze ziekte die ons belette op één plek te blijven, tenzij die plek het dek van een schip was...In deze eerste aflevering van Naar het Duivelseiland vertelt Oostendenaar Eugène Degrave over zijn liefde, en die van zijn broer Léonce, voor de zee... Hun moeder financiert voor hen een stoomschip, maar dat wordt door brand getroffen. In 1890 trekken ze naar Londen om daar aan te monsteren op een schip, maar door een jammerlijk incident met een Grieks matroos worden net op dat ogenblik alle vreemdelingen geweigerd aan boord van Britse schepen. De gebroeders Degrave spreken het Engels zo goed als hun moedertaal, en een boarding-master bezorgt hen papieren op naam van de Britse broers Alexandre en Joseph Rorick. Onder die naam belanden ze op het kleine, paradijselijke eiland Penrhyn, bij Tahiti...Ware Misdaad duikt in het duistere verleden van het Duivelseiland, een beruchte strafkolonie voor de kust van Frans-Guyana (1852-1938), bekend van onder meer de Affaire Dreyfus en het boek Papillon van Henri Charrière, dat twee maal succesvol verfilmd werd. Wij volgen het waargebeurde verhaal van de gebroeders Degrave, die ten onrechte beschuldigd werden van piraterij en moord op de Stille Zuidzee, en veroordeeld tot het Duivelseiland. Not all types of work exist as typical jobs. Elise is an Enchantment Artist, Book Designer + Photographer (including underwater photography) Writer, Philosopher, and Creator of The Starlight Journal, and the upcoming Starlight Collective and Create Journal. Capturing wonder and creating enchantment are her specialties and she is a giant nerd, fascinated by stories, the sea, the stars, and exploring questions like “why are we here?” and “where did we come from?”  Elise's artwork is always literary inspired with a bohemian feel, and is usually a combination of painting, photography, and historical research.
