Parents Rebel Genesis 3:1-24 3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘Youa]">[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,b]">[b] she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the coolc]">[c] of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”d]">[d] 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,     cursed are you above all livestock     and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go,     and dust you shall eat     all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,     and between your offspringe]">[e] and her offspring; he shall bruise your head,     and you shall bruise his heel.” 16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;     in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary tof]">[f] your husband,     but he shall rule over you.” 17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife     and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you,     ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you;     in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;     and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face     you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground,     for out of it you were taken; for you are dust,     and to dust you shall return.” 20 The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.g]">[g] 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. 22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life. 1. Formation Genesis 2:4-24   The Creation of Man and Woman 4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. 5 When no bush of the fielda]">[a] was yet in the landb]">[b] and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mistc]">[c] was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eatd]">[d] of it you shall surely die.” 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit fore]">[e] him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formedf]">[f] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adamg]">[g] there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he madeh]">[h] into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones     and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman,     because she was taken out of Man.”i]">[i] 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.   Sermon Notes   1.  God makes man. CREATION Genesis 1:1 - 2:3   The Creation of the World 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. 6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. 9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” 21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image,     in the image of God he created him;     male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. The Seventh Day, God Rests 2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.   SERMON NOTES   1. He sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city. 6 Now the Lord God appointed a plant[b] and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort.[c] So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. 7 But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant, so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint. And he asked that he might die and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.” 9 But God said to Jonah, “Do you do well to be angry for the plant?” And he said, “Yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.” 10 And the Lord said, “You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”

He came to him and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms,a]">[a] and it was like a daughter to him. 4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” 5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, 6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” 7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. 8 And I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more. 9 Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’” 13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.   SERMON NOTES Jesus sends us Speak truth & justice Next Steps Quotes to Ponder “It's a matter of taking the side of the weak against the strong, something the best people have always done.” - Harriet Beecher Stowe “He has told you, O man, what is good;     and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,     and to walk humbly with your God?” - Micah 6:8

MINISTER GRACE AND LOVE LUKE 10:25-37 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[c]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[e] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” SERMON NOTES 1. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.   SERMON NOTES   What is the big picture? The storm loosens the earth round its roots so the tree is able to get its roots deeper into the earth, where it receives fresh supplies of nourishment. But only much later will it be seen to bring forth better fruit. So corruptions and temptations develop the roots of humility, self-abasement and mourning in a deeper search for that grace by which holiness grows strong. But only later will there be visible fruits of increased holiness.” - John Owen

What I did not steal     must I now restore? 5 O God, you know my folly;     the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. 6 Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me,     O Lord God of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,     O God of Israel. 7 For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach,     that dishonor has covered my face. 8 I have become a stranger to my brothers,     an alien to my mother's sons. 9 For zeal for your house has consumed me,     and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. 10 When I wept and humbledb]">[b] my soul with fasting,     it became my reproach. 11 When I made sackcloth my clothing,     I became a byword to them. 12 I am the talk of those who sit in the gate,     and the drunkards make songs about me. 13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.     At an acceptable time, O God,     in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness. 14 Deliver me     from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies     and from the deep waters. 15 Let not the flood sweep over me,     or the deep swallow me up,     or the pit close its mouth over me. 16 Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;     according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. 17 Hide not your face from your servant,     for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. 18 Draw near to my soul, redeem me;     ransom me because of my enemies! 19 You know my reproach,     and my shame and my dishonor;     my foes are all known to you. 20 Reproaches have broken my heart,     so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none,     and for comforters, but I found none. 21 They gave me poison for food,     and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. 22 Let their own table before them become a snare;     and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.c]">[c] 23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,     and make their loins tremble continually. 24 Pour out your indignation upon them,     and let your burning anger overtake them. 25 May their camp be a desolation;     let no one dwell in their tents. 26 For they persecute him whom you have struck down,     and they recount the pain of those you have wounded. 27 Add to them punishment upon punishment;     may they have no acquittal from you. 28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living;     let them not be enrolled among the righteous. 29 But I am afflicted and in pain;     let your salvation, O God, set me on high! 30 I will praise the name of God with a song;     I will magnify him with thanksgiving. 31 This will please the Lord more than an ox     or a bull with horns and hoofs. 32 When the humble see it they will be glad;     you who seek God, let your hearts revive. 33 For the Lord hears the needy     and does not despise his own people who are prisoners. 34 Let heaven and earth praise him,     the seas and everything that moves in them. 35 For God will save Zion     and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it; 36     the offspring of his servants shall inherit it,     and those who love his name shall dwell in it. A Psalm of Asaph. 79 O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple;     they have laid Jerusalem in ruins. 2 They have given the bodies of your servants to the birds of the heavens for food,     the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth. 3 They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem,     and there was no one to bury them. 4 We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us. 5 How long, O Lord?  Will you be angry forever?  Will your jealousy burn like fire? 6 Pour out your anger on the nations that do not know you,   and on the kingdoms that do not call upon your name! 7 For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitation. 8 Do not remember against us our former iniquities; let your compassion come speedily to meet us,    for we are brought very low. 9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name's sake! 10 Why should the nations say,  “Where is their God?”     Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants     be known among the nations before our eyes! 11 Let the groans of the prisoners come before you;     according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die! 12 Return sevenfold into the lap of our neighbors     the taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord! 13 But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever;     from generation to generation we will recount your praise. For with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt.10 You shall therefore keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year. 11 “When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, 12 you shall set apart to the Lord all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the Lord's. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 And when in time to come your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ you shall say to him, ‘By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. 15 For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all the males that first open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 It shall be as a mark on your hand or frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.   SERMON NOTES 1. Walking in Him          a. The Parable of the Wheat and Weeds Matt. 13:24-30; 36-42   24 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weedsa]">[a] among the wheat and went away.26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.27 And the servantsb]">[b] of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”  Parables make abstract concrete (Matt. 24-30) The kingdom of God is ordinary and real Three parts to the parable Work of the farmer Work of the enemy Patience of the farmer 36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. Parables reveal truths about this world (Matt.13:36-43) The sower is Christ (vs. 36-37) The enemy is the devil (vs. 39a) The field is the world (vs. 38a) The good seed is believers (vs. 38b) The weeds are unbelievers (vs.38c) The harvest is the end of the age (vs. 39b) The reapers are angels (vs. 39c-41) The granary is heaven (vs. 43) The furnace is hell (vs. 42) Parables need to be applied There are two kingdoms in this world vying for power Discern the differences between the two crops and which one you belong to Work is God’s kingdom way for bringing hope into this world   Quotes to Ponder   “Believers themselves are the point of continuity between creation and the new creation.” -  David VanDrunen   “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” - Desmond Tutu “Hope is patience with the lamp lit.” - Tertullian   “Our duty is found in the revealed will of God in the Scriptures. Our trust must be in the sovereign will of God as He works in the ordinary circumstances of our daily lives for our good and His glory.” - Jerry Bridges “Patience is necessary, and one cannot reap immediately where one has sown.” - Soren Kierkegaard

The Parable of the Mustard Seed – The Word changes us Mark 4:30-32 30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth,32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” SERMON NOTES Big Idea:  Christ’s salvation is a kingdom which is entered into by faith. The Story of God’s salvation in Christ. Tree of Life (Gen. 2:9) The Mustard Seed Tree (Mark 4:30-32) The Tree of Life (Rev. 22:2) The Kingdom of God is salvation. Not about you but about the world. It’s about God. How does the Kingdom work?                                                   i.     The measure you use (Mark 4:24-25)                                                  ii.     The way up is to go down. Entering into the Kingdom Through the preaching of the Word Through faith (Romans 10:1-17) Gospel Challenge Go down first and think about representing Jesus by serving. Listen to the Word Quotes to Ponder ““The Gospel of Mark tells a mysterious story enveloped in apocalyptic urgency, a story that focuses relentlessly on the cross and ends on a note of hushed, enigmatic hope. Many of the key images in this mysterious narrative are drawn from Israel’s Scriptures; indeed, a reader who fails to discern the significance of these images can hardly grasp Mark’s message.” – Richard Hays, Reading Backwards   “The principle runs through all life from top to bottom.  Give up yourself, and you will find your real self.  Lose your life and you will save it.  Submit to death, death of your ambitions and favorite wishes every day and death of your whole body in the end:  submit with every fiber of your being, and you will find eternal life.  Keep back nothing.  Nothing that you have not given away will be really yours.  Nothing in you that has not died will ever be raised from the dead.  Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay.  But look for Christ and you will find Him , and with Him everything else thrown in.” – C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

The Parable of the Seed Growing Mark 4:26-29 26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”   SERMON NOTES Growing Seed” Mark 4:26-29 The Word is the seed that changes us every day. 1.
