When Maggie Williams met Nicole Taylor at the 2024 NWTF convention, they couldn't have known one invite to Illinois would kickstart a year full of unforgettable hunts — and an even better friendship. In this episode, Maggie takes Nicole to Florida for her very first Osceola turkey hunt. As they navigate the Old Florida landscape under the live oak canopies and palmettos, the two reminisce about their whirlwind year together. From that first Illinois hunt to the 22-hour road trip to Maine — where they celebrated a successful turkey hunt by diving straight into the icy Atlantic — and wrapping it all up in the Mississippi hardwood bottoms, it's been a journey filled with laughs, long drives, and hard-earned longbeards. This one's for the turkey hunters who know it's not just about filling tags — it's about the stories and the friendships that come along with every mile. Find our host Maggie at:TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@themaggiewilliams?lang=enInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/themaggiewilliams/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/themaggiewilliamspodcast/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnJHqUBdfgnFLc3P87r88VwFind Nicole at: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicoleataylor2004/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nicoleataylor2004Thanks again to our commercial sponsors! If you need a knife that stays sharp when it matters, Outdoor Edge's RazorSafe system is the perfect solution. hello, everyone! Welcome back to another episode of the Generations That Hunt podcast. It's October, and you know what that means—whitetail season is open in Michigan and most other states. It's a busy time for all of us hunters, and I've been swamped with house renovations and school, but I'm excited to get out there soon. In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with my buddy Matt , who is joining our team to help with filming for our YouTube channel. Matt recently went on an elk hunt in September, and we discussed his experiences and the challenges he faced. Matt shared his background, growing up hunting on his family's 60-acre property in southwest Michigan. He didn't have a traditional deer camp experience but got into public land hunting in his mid-20s. His first big game hunt on public land was an over-the-counter elk hunt in Colorado, which he described as a life-changing experience. We talked about the importance of having a good support system during hunting trips and how crucial it is to stay positive, even when things don't go as planned. Matt's recent elk hunt was tough—they didn't see a single elk—but he emphasized the value of the experience and the camaraderie with his hunting buddies. We also touched on the logistics of planning out-of-state hunts, the importance of applying for points in various states, and the dream of hunting in Alaska someday. Matt's optimism and passion for hunting are truly inspiring, and I'm excited to see the content he'll create for our YouTube channel. Remember When: Mississippi Hunters Land HUGE Gator in Storm Looking back on adventurous hunts, do you remember this one? Reported about back in 2023 by Mississippi Clarion-Ledger: A Mississippi alligator hunter, Kyle Mallett of St. Martin, recently captured a 13-foot, 650-pound alligator amid a stormy night on his last hunt of the season. After a frustrating evening with no big catches and a thunderstorm forcing him off the water, Mallett returned to the Pascagoula River marsh with his hunting partner, Matthew Brooks of Biloxi. While clearing grass tangled in the boat's propeller, Mallett was startled when the massive alligator surfaced just three feet from his boat. The water was shallow and clear, allowing him to hook the alligator with a fishing rod. Despite the gator taking off and the challenge of heavy rain, Mallett, with help from his cousin Jarrod Davis and his team, eventually managed to secure and reel in the gator. After a 30-minute struggle to get the giant into the boat, they finally succeeded. The alligator weighed 650 pounds and measured 13 feet, 3 inches, making it one of the largest caught this year. After catching up about their plans for turkey hunting and bear hunting in the spring, the conversation turns to a wide range of topics such as the challenges of being a non-resident hunter, the excitement of having multiple species tags, and the topic of women in the outdoors and the challenges they face, including criticism and attacks from both men and women. The host and guests discuss the importance of representation and the positive impact that mothers' involvement in outdoor activities can have on their children. The trio also touches on the need for better communication and storytelling to convey the benefits of hunting and outdoor pursuits to legislators and the general public. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the importance of respectful and honest dialogue to bridge the gap between hunters and non-hunters. They emphasize the need to make connections and explain the deeper meaning behind hunting and conservation. They also highlight the significance of voting and getting involved in conservation organizations to protect hunting rights and wildlife. The conversation ends with a call to normalize conversations about hunting and to support and encourage women in the outdoors. He gets set up in an absolute sweet spot with fantastic views, looks around and notices something in the field next to him. Can you guess what it was? A cow – a very large group of cows. Apparently his scouting trip that was super promising was not a sign of deer beds and deer trails but it was entirely made by cows! Needless to say, the hunt was a little slow. The next day he heads out to another public spot hoping for a little more success. Listen in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to see how his second spot ended up! He gets up in his stand and the movement starts early with a few small bucks cruising through by his setup. The next thing he knows, here comes his target buck! He hangs up a little far and dips out in the craziest way Brad's ever seen. Brad assumed there was no way this deer was coming back but next thing he knows he's right back within bow range.
