We're taking on another request, this time for Sega's 8-bit console. We're looking at Spellcaster, a mash of a graphic adventure game and sidescrolling action sections, which is admittedly right in our wheelhouse. Is this a forgotten gem, or best left forgotten? We played it to let you know our thoughts. We also all have been playing the same current game, but not on purpose - and our patron Jason wanted to let everyone know about the Uncanny X-Cast, which you can find here : https://uncannyxcast.libsyn.com/ Want to jump right to the game? Charge your shot for the 7:45 mark. Join us over on our Discord to discuss games, food, or really anything over at https://discord.gg/pb76x32uWY __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? In this captivating conversation, Cari Fund sits down with Dana Myers, a tarot reader, spellcaster, and ritual designer, to explore the magic of manifestation, intuition, and pleasure. Dana shares her journey from the sexual wellness industry to embracing the power of rituals and self-discovery. Together, they discuss the balance between hard work and manifestation, the importance of leaning into discomfort, and how simple daily practices can transform your life. Tune in for insights on harnessing your personal magic, trusting your intuition, and bringing more joy into your daily routine.
Hold onto your enchanted joysticks, pixel pilgrims! This week's Play Comics episode is diving headfirst into the glorious chaos of SpellCaster—the Sega Master System gem that's part Buddhist demon-hunting simulator, part side-scrolling magic blaster, and 100% “why is there a cybernetic samurai in medieval Japan?” energy. Joining us in this dimension-hopping debacle is none other than SegaMasterTim, the human encyclopedia of 8-bit obscurities, here to help untangle a game so bizarre it makes Twin Peaks look like a PBS documentary. Based on the Kujaku Ō manga (Peacock King for us non-manga scholars), SpellCaster serves up more genre mashups than a Sega CD compilation disc. Spoiler alert: There's a first-person adventure segment where you'll TAKE SWORD, TALK TO GHOST, and question every life choice that led you here. Strap in for hot takes, FM synth jams, and Tim's valiant attempt to explain why Sega thought “Let's make Mystic Defender next!” was a logical sequel pitch. No sacred temples were harmed in the making of this podcast…probably. Learn such things as: Is spaghetti the most magical of pasta shapes? Does anyone over here understand the plot at all? Can peacocks even use magic? And so much more! You can find SegaMasterTime on Instagram @segamastertim or by looking for SegaMasterTim wherever you hang out on the social medias. Last year we accompanied our Doug Jones Day episode with a review of the cult classic SPOOKIES, featuring an ensemble of characters under siege from an evil sorcerer and his peculiar assortment of supernatural minions. This year we're following a similar pattern, but swapping out the Jay Estate in New York for Castello Di Giove in Italy, a locale that will be familiar to fans of the movies of Charles Band and Empire International Pictures. For our latest episode we're reviewing SPELLCASTER (filmed in 1988, but not released until 1992) from director Rafal Zielinski, featuring Adam Ant, Bunty Baily and KROQ-FM's own Richard Blade. We do start the episode with a bit of sad talk about recent life events for our hosts, but we had a tremendously fun time discussing the movie afterwards and we hope everyone enjoys the episode. If you want to skip over the sad bits, the movie discussion begins around the 13:30 mark. As of this release, the movie is free to stream on both Tubi and the Youtube channel for Full Moon Pictures, and absolutely recommend checking out the movie before listening to this review. And also be sure to see SPOOKIES if you haven't already, as it comes up a LOT in this review and is becoming an oddly integral movie for our pod. Join us as we dive into the mechanics and challenges of Counterspell across different editions of D&D and Pathfinder! We break down what works, what doesn't, and how it impacts gameplay. Whether you're a fan of the 2014 D&D rules or prefer Pathfinder's approach or looking forward to the 2024 D&D rules, this episode has something for every tabletop RPG enthusiast! Summary In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we dive into the mechanics and challenges of the Counterspell ability across various editions of Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. We discuss the complexities and limitations of Counterspell in the 2024 Edition D&D and Pathfinder 1e, such as the need to ready an action and the high DC for spellcraft checks. The conversation shifts to Pathfinder 2, where Counterspell is streamlined into a reaction-based feat with a DC tied to the caster's save DC, reflecting notable improvements. We compare Counterspell mechanics in Pathfinder 2nd Edition and D&D 5th Edition, examining the strengths and weaknesses of each system. Topics include spell preparation, action economy, and the overall impact of Counterspell on gameplay and player agency. We offer differing perspectives, with one favoring D&D 5th Edition's 2014 rules and another finding Pathfinder 2nd Edition's approach more appealing. This episode provides an in-depth look at Counterspell across RPG systems, touching on its impact on the player experience and exploring possible improvements. Takeaways Counterspell in 3rd edition and Pathfinder 1 has limitations and complexities, including the need to ready an action and the high DC for the spellcraft check. Counterspell in Pathfinder 2 is a feat that can be used as a reaction, and the DC is based on the caster's save DC. The hosts express frustration with the mechanics of Counterspell and suggest potential improvements. Identifying the spell being cast is an important factor in successfully countering a spell. The limitations of Counterspell make it a niche ability that is rarely used in gameplay. Counterspells in Pathfinder 2nd Edition require spellcasters to have the exact spell prepared or use the Clever Counterspell feat at level 12. In D&D 5th Edition, counterspells can be cast as a reaction and require an ability check or a successful saving throw against the caster's spell save DC. The effectiveness of counterspells in both systems depends on factors such as spell level, spellcasting ability, and the target's saving throw proficiency. The changes in Pathfinder 2nd Edition give the target of a counterspell more agency and allow for more strategic decision-making. The 2014 rules of D&D 5th Edition provide a simpler and more accessible approach to counterspells, but some players may find them less satisfying or balanced. Counterspell can be a divisive mechanic in tabletop RPGs, with some players finding it frustrating and others enjoying its strategic elements. The hosts discuss the mechanics of counterspell in Pathfinder and D&D, including the use of spell slots, ability checks, and critical success/failure. They explore potential improvements to counterspell, such as removing the requirement to have the same spell prepared or adding additional action costs. The conversation also touches on other dice systems, including the D10 pool system and the D100 system, and the hosts share their preferences. An offshoot of the mid-70s "porno chic" era, the "erotic musical comedy based on public domain stories" subgenre remains one of the weirdest fads in film history, and Charles Band was there on the ground floor. This week, we're talking about two of his earliest projects, the ribald erotic comedies CINDERELLA and FAIRY TALES! We're joined by writer, filmmaker, and exploitation film historian Michael Gingold to dig deep into some truly jaw-dropping motion pictures. In this episode, we get to know the world of composer, musician, producer and vocalist Holger Hartvig, also known as Spellcaster as well as Anybard, and Anybardinthegrass. Hartvig shares with us some of their inspirations including Robert Ashley, Cornelius Cardew, and the soundtrack of the video game Heroes of Might and Magic III. They open up about their process for creating characters for their storytelling, playing with fictional narratives in their music and discuss their use of roleplaying and game systems as tools for composing, imagining characters' stories, and their performances. These games and systems have allowed Hartvig to design their own musical frameworks and create fragmented soundscapes tied together with their vocals and narration. Through this experimentation, Hartvig's music evokes a sense of fantasy and brings audiences deeper into the world of their characters. Check out this episode if you are interested in hearing more on their recent libretto, their album Memo, and exciting news on new projects. Hosts: Macon Holt & Ivna Franic Guest: Holger Hartvig aka.
