Horror movie deep dives, discussion, and dissection.
Our Christmas episode is still coming (albeit way, way after December), but we're taking a quick detour to the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. It's Episode 76, so it's the perfect time to have our resident 76ers fan Jacob choose a movie to review. And being our resident found-footage fan as well, for our latest episode Jacob has chosen GRAVE ENCOUNTERS (2011), written and directed by The Vicious Brothers. We also discuss the Kickstarter that Jacob just launched for his debut horror-fantasy novel THE CHANGE! You can check out the link below for more details, and any support is greatly appreciated: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/oddityprodigy/the-change-a-novel If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: http://www.letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!
The Rustic Signal has been lit! Although this episode is being released later than we'd hoped (although if we're reviewing a time travel movie, maybe our delays don't count this time around?), we're very excited for everyone to check out our discussion of the latest release from Rustic Films: THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT (2024). And even better, we're so delighted to be joined by the movie's writer/director Michael Felker for a special interview! We had a truly fabulous time chatting with Michael about the movie, his work on previous Rustic Films features, and much more (and probably more JCVD than any of us anticipated). We can't thank him enough for his time, and we really hope everyone enjoys the episode! If you haven't seen the movie yet, as of this episode's release it's currently streaming on all major VOD platforms, with more details available here: www.magnetreleasing.com/thingswillbedifferent/watch-at-home/ For more information on Michael Felker and Last Life Films, you can visit: www.lastlifefilms.com/ As mentioned in the episode, if you have some funds to spare, we'd greatly appreciate it if you could consider donating to the GoFundMe to help Ben Mekler and his family out after their home was lost in the Eaton Fire: www.gofundme.com/f/ben-and-kirby-lost-everything-in-the-eaton-fire/ If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: www.letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!
This one is something special. That statement doesn't just apply to the movie WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON (1993) from director Anthony Hickox, which is the subject of this new episode. As much as the movie itself made for an entertaining discussion, what makes it special is that we're joined on this episode by returning guest Duane Swierczynski! We had a wonderful time chatting with Duane in our LORD OF ILLUSIONS episode a couple years back, and we're so thrilled to have him back on the pod to talk about the next installment in the WARLOCK series, as well as the Holiday Book Drive currently underway for 2024 via The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation (benefitting The Children's Hospital of Los Angeles). You can learn more about The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation and donate to them directly at: https://www.teameviefoundation.com/ We also absolutely encourage everyone to check out Duane's work (including CALIFORNIA BEAR and the recently reprinted SECRET DEAD MEN), and you can visit his official site for more details: https://www.gleefulmayhem.com/ The Commando-inspired "Infinity Tree" design from the fabulous Erica Henderson mentioned in today's episode can be found on her Threadless page: https://ericafails.threadless.com/ If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!
It's our 2024 Halloween special! The trailer for the subject of our new episode refers to "Something beyond comprehension," which also applies to our pod as one of our hosts has never seen this horror classic before. For our Halloween celebration this year, our host Jacob has chosen THE EXORCIST (1973) from director William Friedkin and writer William Peter Blatty! It's a bit daunting tackling a movie that casts a shadow as long as this one, but we had a great time discussing the movie from both the perspective of a first-time viewer and two hosts whose perspectives on the movie may have evolved a bit since they first saw it decades ago. We really hope everyone enjoys this review, but most of all we hope everyone has a very happy Halloween this year. If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!
It's our second Steve Miner movie in a row, as we're reviewing WARLOCK (1989) in our latest episode! We thought this would be an interesting movie to discuss after having so much fun talking about HOUSE (1985) in our previous episode, but we bumped it up the priority list after our host Eric watched its sequel WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON (1993). A review of that sequel is coming up soon (with a very special guest!), but before then we'll have our Halloween special, and Jake announces his pick for that episode at the end of our WARLOCK chat. In the meantime, we had a great time discussing a terrific script from David Twohy, along with some scenes trimmed from the original script, the directorial work of Steve Miner, and of course the fabulous central performance by the late Julian Sands. We really hope everyone enjoys this one.
Believe it or not, this episode's been a long time coming for us. We've talked about covering this movie since the beginning of the pod, but we finally sat down to review HOUSE (1985)! This film from director Steve Miner and writers Fred Dekker and Ethan Wiley has been a favorite of our host Nick for many, many years, and it was a delight to finally discuss it on the show. Although this review is not without its cost, as Nick has to endure far more comic talk than he could have possibly anticipated before we hit "record." But we had a blast chatting about the movie, taboo tooth-brushing techniques, Herculean efforts to unearth four eighties comic books, introducing the K.R.E.O.N. certification system and much more. We really hope everyone enjoys the review.
Arise and come in, child. Enter for yet another episode of the Scary Stuff Podcast. After going on our first podcast road trip, we're reviewing a movie that kicks off with a road trip gone awry: THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN (1971)! Directed by Bernard McEveety and starring Sam Peckinpah regulars L.Q. Jones (who also was a producer, uncredited writer and wrote the movie's prose novelization) and Strother Martin, we had a fabulous time discussing this surreal 70's plunge into the era of Satanic Panic. As of this episode's release the movie is currently available on Tubi (and has a very nice blu-ray release from Arrow Video) and we absolutely encourage checking the movie out ahead of our review. We really hope everyone enjoys this one. Last year we accompanied our Doug Jones Day episode with a review of the cult classic SPOOKIES, featuring an ensemble of characters under siege from an evil sorcerer and his peculiar assortment of supernatural minions. This year we're following a similar pattern, but swapping out the Jay Estate in New York for Castello Di Giove in Italy, a locale that will be familiar to fans of the movies of Charles Band and Empire International Pictures. For our latest episode we're reviewing SPELLCASTER (filmed in 1988, but not released until 1992) from director Rafal Zielinski, featuring Adam Ant, Bunty Baily and KROQ-FM's own Richard Blade. We do start the episode with a bit of sad talk about recent life events for our hosts, but we had a tremendously fun time discussing the movie afterwards and we hope everyone enjoys the episode. If you want to skip over the sad bits, the movie discussion begins around the 13:30 mark. As of this release, the movie is free to stream on both Tubi and the Youtube channel for Full Moon Pictures, and absolutely recommend checking out the movie before listening to this review. And also be sure to see SPOOKIES if you haven't already, as it comes up a LOT in this review and is becoming an oddly integral movie for our pod. We're back! Yet again! Apologies for another long absence, and a sincere thank you to all of our listeners who reached out in the interim. We'll get into more details on where we've been in the next episode, but we weren't going to miss our annual Doug Jones Day celebration. This year it was Jacob's turn to pick the movie, and after picking LEGION a few years back, this year he chose another movie that features both Doug Jones and Charles Dutton: MIMIC from director Guillermo Del Toro! We should be back with another episode in late July, but we hope you enjoy our fifth annual Doug Jones episode. If you like what you hear, feel free to leave us a review wherever you get your pods. It's our very first comic book episode! Although we've reviewed several movie adaptations of comics in previous episodes (SWAMP THING, BLADE, CONSTANTINE, etc), we're delighted to review our first comic miniseries on the podcast: NIGHT OF THE GHOUL from writer Scott Snyder and artist Francesco Francavilla. We get into what prompted our first comic review during the review, but this was a delight to record and we're so excited to welcome a special guest back to our pod: Jeremiah Jones-Goldstein! If you haven't read the comic miniseries from Best Jackett Press yet, you can read digital versions via Comixology / Amazon Prime, but we absolutely encourage you to pick up either the single issues or the trade paperback versions from your local comic shop. Please support our guest Jeremiah Jones-Goldstein by checking out his recent appearances on the Magazines & Monsters Podcast, or by visiting his comics site at https://comicscomicscomics.blog/ Our hosts Nick and Jake will also be in attendance at the ACME Show being held by our local comic shop Captain Blue Hen comics. That event will take place from 5pm to 9pm EST at the Newark Arts Alliance on August 19th! Not only are we delighted to welcome special guest David Lawson Jr from Rustic Films back to the pod, but this episode marks his induction into our own Five-Timer's Club! David was our first appeared on our pod way back in our SHE DIES TOMORROW episode, and now a few years later he's back to discuss the horror anthology he has curated for Dark Matter Ink: HAUNTED REELS! We talk a bit about our favorite horror movie anthologies along the way, but mainly we're here to celebrate the release of a very special collection. David's assembled an amazing lineup of contributors that includes several creators we've talked about on the pod before (Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead, Ariel Vida, C. Robert Cargill, Graham Skipper, Gary Sherman and many, many more), and we're absolutely delighted for everyone involved. You can see the full table of contents and order a copy directly from the publisher at this link: https://darkmattermagazine.shop/pages/haunted-reels We hope everyone enjoys the chat with David, we hope everyone picks up a copy of the book, and as always thanks so much for listening! Our hosts Nick and Jake also released their own horror fiction anthology a couple years ago, which is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble but you can pick up a copy from Bookshop here: https://bookshop.org/p/books/scary-stuff-a-horror-anthology-nicholas-leamy/15345332 If you'd like to follow us on social media, we just updated our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles below: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ Thanks so much!
Please join us in wishing a happy house-warming to our host Nick Leamy! Nick detailed some of the home-buying headaches he and his family were dealing with back in our SPOOKIES episode, but that's all been settled and everyone's settling into a lovely new home. To celebrate this, we asked Nick to pick a movie to celebrate and he chose the original THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979), from director Stuart Rosenberg and starring Margot Kidder, James Brolin and Rod Steiger. Our opinions run a pretty wide spectrum on this one, which made for a fun discussion and we really hope everyone enjoys listening! Also, as mentioned in the episode's intro, with the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ongoing we highly encourage everyone to consider donating to the Entertainment Community Fund to help those affected by work stoppages: https://entertainmentcommunity.org/how-get-help-and-give-help-during-work-stoppage If you'd like to follow us on social media, we just updated our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles below: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!
Happy Doug Jones Day everybody! It's our fourth year in a row celebrating our favorite horror holiday: the anniversary of the day Doug Jones worked on the set of Mike Flanagan's movie ABSENTIA. This year we're celebrating by watching THE DARKLING (2000), a USA original tv movie starring F Murray Abraham and Aidan Gillen (and of course Doug Jones, in the role of "Shadow Master"). As of this release the movie is a little difficult to track, but don't worry if you haven't seen it: we walk through the movie's plot as part of the discussion. This was a real blast to record, but we're always delighted to celebrate Doug Jones Day each year. We hope you enjoy the episode, and thanks so much for listening!! Our not-quite-lost-but-certainly-long-delayed review of BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON (2006) is here! As mentioned in our SPOOKIES review, we recorded this episode back in January, but wanted to come back from hiatus with something else before this episode was released. Big thanks to everyone who voted for this movie in our Robert Englund poll, and apologies for the delay! Up next is our fourth annual "Doug Jones Day" episode, and we're very excited for everyone to check it out. We'll be reviewing THE DARKLING, a USA tv-movie from the year 2000 starring Aidan Gillen and F. Murray Abraham. In the meantime, if you would like to read more about the Jesse Malin medical fund mentioned in our opening, you can do so at this link: https://www.sweetrelief.org/jessemalinfund.html And as always, thanks so much for listening! We're back! Apologies for the unplanned hiatus, but we give an update on where we've been at the start of this return episode. After that, we're reviewing the movie SPOOKIES (1986), which is currently available on Shudder as of this release. If you want to skip straight to the movie stuff, the timecode for that is 00:18:58. We haven't forgotten about our previously announced episode for BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON. We recorded that back in January, but we didn't want it to be our first episode back after some time away. The BEHIND THE MASK episode should be out just before Doug Jones Day hits on June 30th! And as always, thanks so much for listening! Check out our website scarystuffpodcast.com, and you can follow us on the following social media platforms: Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/
Happy (very-belated) Holidays everyone!! It has been a bit of a rough month for all three of us here at the pod (some of these reasons are mentioned in the episode), so we knew going into this recording there was a good chance it wouldn't be out before Christmas. Sadly that proved to be the case, but we're glad the episode was finished in time for the end of 2022. And we're even more delighted to be reviewing another feature starring Jeremy Gardner (alongside Graham Skipper, Taylor Zaudtke and Rigo Garay) on the pod: THE LEECH (2022) from writer/director Eric Pennycoff! Our host Eric first saw the movie at this year's Chattanooga Film Fest, and has been looking forward to covering it on the pod ever since. Unfortunately the fore-mentioned rough month lead to this being more of a rambling/cathartic episode than we intended, but hopefully we're closing out 2022 on an entertaining note. We absolutely encourage everyone to check out the movie (currently available on VOD, blu-ray and the Arrow streaming service) before listening to this episode. Again, happy holidays everyone and thanks so much for listening!! CW: abortion, suicide (both of which are elements of the movie and are likewise discussed in this review)
One year to the day since we started our Elm Street restrospective, we're concluding it with our review of the Platinum Dunes remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2010)! We've been teasing our opinions of this movie ever since we reviewed the first one, so we were very excited to finally record this discussion. We had a terrific time reviewing the Elm Street series, and this movie was no exception. We hope everyone enjoys the episode, and as always thanks so much for listening!!
It's time to tackle another true horror classic on our podcast, and hopefully we "did it beautifully!" Ahead of the release of his new comic DEAD SEAS from IDW, we're delighted to be joined by writer Cavan Scott to discuss his favorite horror movie: THE WICKER MAN (1973)! We've been fans of Cavan's work on Titans United, Shadow Service and more for quite some time now, so it was a real thrill to have him on the pod as a guest. We had a fabulous time discussing this film, and we very much hope everyone enjoys listening to it. You can find more details on Cavan's work in both comics and prose via his website here: https://cavanscott.com/ And as always, thanks for listening!!
As we shatter our record for "Longest Episode on a Single Movie" (the previous record-holder being Oculus), is it any surprise that it was prompted by a new release from Rustic Films? Probably not, if you've heard our previous episodes, and probably even less surprising if you've seen the subject of our new episode: SOMETHING IN THE DIRT (2022). We were lucky enough to catch the latest from directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead during the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, but we didn't want to do a full episode on it until it was widely released. The movie is now on VOD platforms everywhere, and we absolutely recommend checking it out and supporting some of our favorite filmmakers. The episode length may seem a little daunting, but we had a fabulous time discussing this film and an even better time chatting with returning guest producer David Lawson Jr.! It's always special having a chance to interview Dave on the podcast, and we really can't thank him enough for his time. If you want to skip right to the interview portion of the episode, the timecode is listed below. We also recommend checking out the new Rustic Films shop to grab some of their fabulous new merch at the following link: https://www.rustic.film/shop And as always, thanks so much for listening!! Timecode for David Lawson Jr interview - 02:26:00 CW: there is some discussion of anxiety and depression in the latter portion of the movie review.
Happy Noirvember! We've been meaning to do a horror/noir movie as a Noirvember special since our first year, so apparently the third year's the charm. So this year we're delighted to review our first Clive Barker feature on the pod: LORD OF ILLUSIONS [1995], with Clive adapting his own short story "The Last Illusion" from the Books of Blood. And even better, we're joined by a very special guest whose prose and comics work we've loved for a long time: Duane Swierczynski! We had an absolutely fabulous time chatting with Duane, and we really hope everyone enjoys the episode. But more importantly, we hope everyone takes a moment after the episode to consider donating to Evie's Holiday Book Drive, which is currently active until December 5th, 2022. Duane gives more details on the book drive in our episode at this timecode (01:44:10), but you can visit the link below for more details on The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation and to donate here: https://www.teameviefoundation.com/ You can find more detail on Duane's work and social media links via his Linktree here: https://linktr.ee/swierczy And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
First of all, it is October... so Happy Halloween everyone! For last year's Halloween, we reviewed a movie that we think captures the Halloween spirit rather perfectly: THE MORTUARY COLLECTION. So this year, we're reviewing the cinematic adaptation of a book that does the same for the whole autumn season: SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (1983)! Since this is an adaptation of material we've all read and loved here at the pod, we're doing this review a little differently: we'll discuss the original novel a bit (and Ray Bradbury as a whole) before moving onto the movie. For a work that has influenced the lives of so many readers, it's so appropriate that we're joined by a special guest whose work has shaped the lives of our hosts: J.M. DeMatteis (Moonshadow, Justice League International, Kraven's Last Hunt and much much more)! We've mentioned his work on the pod before, but today Mr. DeMatteis is here to tell us about his new supernatural novella (THE EXCAVATOR) and the Kickstarter for THE DEMULTIVERSE, which will launch with four new first issues! We can't overstate how delightful it was to chat Ray Bradbury with Mr. DeMatteis, and we really hope everyone enjoys the episode. After you've listened to the episode, check out these links for more details on THE DEMULTIVERSE: https://spellboundcomics.com/ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spellboundcomics/surprise-four-secret-comics-by-jm-dematteis-demultiverse The novella THE EXCAVATOR is currently available in both paperback and ebook formats courtesy of NeoText. You can find more details on the other works of J.M. DeMatteis at his site: http://www.jmdematteis.com/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
It's finally here! We've been saying for years that once the Criterion collection finally released it on blu-ray, we would review Kiyoshi Kurosawa's CURE (1997) on the pod. With the blu-ray out as of October 18th, it's finally time for us to review this absolute classic of horror. And joining us for this review is a returning guest from last year's BUTTERFLY KISSES review: Trevor Henderson! On top of being an amazing artist, we knew Trevor was a big fan of CURE back when we talked to him as part of our found footage episode, so we're so so glad we were able to get together to discuss what is arguably Kiyoshi Kurosawa's masterwork. After you check out our review, be sure to check out Trevor's new pod THE MAYFAIR WATCHERS SOCIETY! You can find more details as well as links to it on various pod platforms here: https://mayfairwatchers.com/ You can also support Trevor by buying a print of his fabulous artwork via his Inprnt shop: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/slimyswampghost/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
After a few months of reviewing standalone horror features, we're back to the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise! We've covered the six movies in the "Elm Street Prime" portion of the series, so next up is WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE (1994). This is a franchise favorite for many fans, and we're delighted to be joined by a special guest who is also a huge Elm Street fan: Cynthia Pelayo! We're big fans of Cynthia's work here at the pod, so please check out her recent releases after you listen to the episode. You can read more on Cynthia's latest release CRIME SCENE here courtesy of Raw Dog Screaming Press: https://rawdogscreaming.com/books/crime-scene/ Cynthia's Linktree page can be found here: https://linktr.ee/cinapelayo And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
It's our very first anime review on the pod! We thrilled to be reviewing "Magnetic Rose," the first segment of the 1995 cinematic anthology MEMORIES based on the works of Katsuhiro Otomo. And not only are we thrilled that our first anime on the pod has a screenplay by Satoshi Kon (PERFECT BLUE, PARANOIA AGENT), but we're joined by a pair of fabulous guests: Luke Piotrowski and Ben Collins! You know their screenwriting work from THE NIGHT HOUSE, SUPER DARK TIMES and more, but alongside Kevin Phillips they are also the hosts of Sync Ratios, a terrific Neon Genesis Evangelion podcast. We've had such an amazing run of special guests since our pod began, but it was particularly fun to chat anime with two folks we're enormous fans of, and we really can't thank Ben and Luke enough for their time. We run down where you can currently find their feature films during the review (HELLRAISER arrives on Hulu on Oct 7th!), but we highly encourage any Evangelion fans to check out the Sync Ratios podcast. And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
If you listened to our review of The Legend of Boggy Creek in Episode 50, you heard Jake and I realize that Episode 52 was coming up and that almost certainly meant it was time for us to review another comic book adaptation. We get into more of the details why in this discussion, but for Episode 52 we've chosen to review 2005's Constantine! This movie has had a bit of a contentious history amongst our hosts sinces its release, so it seemed like a good time to revisit this cinematic rendition of Hellblazer to see if our opinions had changed. We hope everyone enjoys the resulting discussion! Big thanks to Jacob's brother Jeremiah Jones-Goldstein for joining us for this review! Be sure to check out his own site: https://comicscomicscomics.blog/ And as always, thanks so much for listening! Note: the episode begins with some discussions of the comic source material and why we picked the movie for this particular episode, but if you want to go right to the movie discussion the timecode is 00:35:11.
For our 51st episode, we're taking a quick detour from the Nightmare on Elm Street series to review a different kind of dream-centric horror movie: Come True (2020) from director Anthony Scott Burns! We were big fans of the Father's Day installment of Holidays that Burns directed, and we're very excited to discuss one of his feature-length projects on the pod. And even better, we're joined by a very special guest: Daniel Kraus! We've talked about Daniel's work in the past, particularly praising his comic series The Autumnal published by Vault, so we were absolutely delighted to have a chance to chat with him about a fascinating movie as well as his new book The Ghost That Ate Us! For more details on The Ghost That Ate Us, you can visit this link via the publisher Raw Dog Screaming Press: https://rawdogscreaming.com/book-deal-daniel-kraus-the-ghost-that-ate-us/ For more details on Daniel and his work, please visit his website (and please check out The Autumnal): http://www.danielkraus.com/ If you'd like to support our pod and try a new coffee roast at the same time, our collaboration coffee with Rootless Coffee is on sale for the month of September 2022 at the link below! rootlesscoffee.com/products/scary-stuff-podcast And as always, thanks so much for listening!
We're back, and we're celebrating our 50th upload! For this very special episode, we're very excited (or at least some of us are) to be reviewing The Legend of Boggy Creek! This episode is dedicated to one of our longtime listeners, but we hope everyone enjoys it! Also coinciding with the release of this episode is the return of our coffee roast! We're doing another run of our collaboration coffee with the fabulous folks at Rootless Coffee, and you can grab a bag here: https://rootlesscoffee.com/products/scary-stuff-podcast The coffee is only on sale until the end of September 2022, so order while you can. Thanks so much for supporting our pod, and as always thanks so much for listening!
Happy Doug Jones Day everybody! It's our third consecutive year celebrating actor Doug Jones (although technically this is the 12th anniversary of the original Doug Jones Day), but it's the first time we're reviewing a Disney movie on our podcast! For this year's Doug Jones Day episode, we're discussing 1993's Hocus Pocus, wherein Doug Jones plays "Billy Butcherson" in one of his earliest roles. This is a beloved movie in several corners of horror fandom, and was a gateway horror movie to many, many people. We had a blast talking about it, and we hope everyone enjoys the episode. And most importantly: thank you so much for listening! CONTENT WARNING: although we're doing a Disney movie for this episode, we are still our usual profanity-laced selves throughout the discussion. There are also excerpts read from an old draft of the script that feature jokes more mature/coarse than those in the finished film, and some jokes that have not necessarily aged well since the 90s. So the movie itself may be family-friendly, but please note that this episode/conversation is not.
It's the 40th anniversary of John Carpenter's The Thing, and we're celebrating with a truly special episode. For our review of this horror classic, we're joined by special guest Mat Johnson. Mat has written amazing works in comics (Papa Midnite, Incognegro: A Graphic Mystery, Right State), in prose (Drop, Pym, Loving Day) and is now working on two upcoming tv series: Manhunt and The Fall of the House of Usher. Mat also has a brand new novel being released on June 28th titled Invisible Things, but most importantly for our podcast: Mat is a longtime fan of the Philadelphia 76ers! This is a special movie to both us and Mat, and the resulting conversation is some of the most fun we've ever had on the pod. We really hope you enjoy the conversation, and we highly encourage you to check out Mat's work if you haven't already (links below). And as always, thanks so much for listening! You can find more details on Mat's new novel INVISIBLE THINGS here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/636431/invisible-things-by-mat-johnson/ You can find more details on Mat's comics and prose work on his website: http://www.matjohnson.info/
Just in time for its debut on Shudder, we're bringing you our review of the new horror movie from director Luke Boyce and Shatterglass Films: Revealer! We had a great time chatting about the movie, and an even better one interviewing the movie's co-writer Michael Moreci! That interview can be found on the latter portion of the episode (timecode below), but we've been fans of both Michael's and co-writer Tim Seeley's work in comics for a long time, so we've been excited for their first movie collaboration since it was announced. As always, we're a full spoiler podcast, so be sure to head over to Shudder.com to watch the movie first. Then come back here to check out our chat on 80s horror nostalgia, a fascinating glimpse into the filmmaking process during the early days of the pandemic, and also the tale of our host Nick's bachelor party (trust us, it's not as lurid as you might think)! And as always, thanks so much for listening! *Michael's interview begins at 00:45:04 Visit this link for more details on Michael's comic BARBARIC with Vault: https://www.vaultcomics.com/titles/barbaric/ Visit this link for more details on Shatterglass Films: http://www.shatterglassfilms.com/
Just in time for the release of the first comic written by pod-favorites Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Afterschool 1 from Skybound), we're reviewing their first work on a comic-inspired property: Moon Knight! Benson and Moorhead directed two episodes of the new Marvel series on Disney+, with the other four episodes helmed by Mohamed Diab (director of Clash and Cairo 678). Being big comic fans here at the pod, we were very excited to cover a superhero property on the show. But even better, we're joined by a special guest who is a fantastic writer of both comics and prose AND a fan of the Moon Knight comics: Alex Segura! Alex has worked on properties such as Star Wars, Archie and more, but his latest novel Secret Identity is a mystery thriller set in the comics industry of 1975, which happens to be the same year Moon Knight debuted in an issue of Werewolf By Night! We had a fabulous time chatting with Alex, and we really hope everyone enjoys the episode. After you've finished listening, check out the links below for more details on Alex's work! And as always, thanks so much for listening! You can read more on Alex's new novel Secret Identity here: https://www.alexsegura.com/books/secret-identity/ The Mysterious Micro-Face can be ordered via the NPR Shop at this link: https://shop.npr.org/products/micro-face-planet-money-comic-book More details on Skybound Presents: Afterschool #1 can be found here: https://imagecomics.com/comics/releases/skybound-presents-afterschool-1-of-4 Alex Segura's website: https://www.alexsegura.com/
Our Nightmare on Elm Street franchise retrospective continues! This episode is going up later than we intended due to some recent health issues, but we're delighted to review the next two Freddy Krueger installments: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. And even better, for the Dream Child portion we're joined by the phenomenal artist of Dracula Motherf***er, Squirrel Girl, Assassin Nation and more: Erica Henderson! This episode concludes the "Freddy Prime" portion of the Elm Street series, but we will be reviewing both Wes Craven's New Nightmare and the Platinum Dunes remake in the near future. Between now and then, we have some special episodes planned that we're very excited about. We hope everyone enjoys this episode, as we had such a fantastic time talking with Erica Henderson. You can support our special guest via the following links: Erica's Patreon: https://patreon.com/ericafails Erica's Threadless: https://ericafails.threadless.com Friends 'Till the End pocast: https://friendstilltheend.libsyn.com Friends 'Till the End Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/friendstilltheend And as always, thanks so much for listening! (CW: discussions of child endangerment and assault, both in the finished movies and various script drafts)
The second part of our Tobe Hooper / Robert Englund series is here! We put up a poll to determine which Hooper / Englund cinematic collaboration we would review, and The Mangler won over Eaten Alive and Night Terrors. We're looking forward to reviewing the other two movies down the line, but for now we're delighted to have an excuse to discuss another Stephen King adaptation and another Ted Levine performance. We hope everyone enjoys the episode, and thank you so much for listening!
To follow-up our Valentine's Day special on After Midnight, we're reviewing Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker (1981) from director William Asher! What's the connection between the two movies? Like most things on our podcast, it's thoroughly quirky. But whatever the reason, this movie made for a great conversation and made for an excuse to invite a great guest onto the pod: writer John Lees! We've been thoroughly enjoying John's work on comics like The Crimson Cage, Mountainhead and more, so we definitely encourage you to check out John's work on his Big Cartel page here: https://johnleescomics.bigcartel.com/ John also has a terrific Patreon page with lots of behind-the-scenes content, which can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/johnlees And as always, thank you so much for listening! CW: the movie includes elements of incest and sexual assault, and those items are likewise mentioned in the movie discussion To view the links mentioned in our episode introduction: *link to the Transgender Education Network of Texas: https://www.transtexas.org/ *the twitter thread from the George A Romero Foundation: https://twitter.com/theGARFofficial/status/1497381019183423490 *more details on the Tenebrous Press anthology Your Body Is Not Your Body: https://tenebrouspress.com/blog/2022/2/23/submissions-open-for-short-fiction-to-benefit-trans-youth-in-texas
Happy Valentine's Day from all of us at the Scary Stuff Podcast! This year we're using the holiday as an excuse to review a movie that we all love here at the pod: After Midnight (2019) from directors Jeremy Gardener and Christian Stella! Appropriately enough the movie has a bit of history with Valentine's Day, as its wide release date was February 14, 2020. And it was also the first movie officially released under the banner of Rustic Films! It's a real delight to talk about this movie on the pod, and even better to do so alongside a fabulous guest: Michelle Swope! Michelle is a member of the North Carolina Film Critics Association, has written for Dread Central, Nightmarish Conjurings, and is currently writing for Scream Horror Magazine and Daily Dead. We're huge fans of Michelle's work here, and she's a huge fan of After Midnight, so this recording was tremendous fun. After you've listened to the episode, be sure to check out Michelle's Authory page at the link below, and keep an eye on BloodyDisgusting.com for her upcoming column titled DEAD Time! https://authory.com/MichelleSwope And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
Since the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series came in second in our recent franchise poll (which Nightmare on Elm Street won) we thought it would be fun to do a couple minisodes on collaborations between TCM director Tobe Hooper and actor Robert Englund. With Hooper directing the pilot episode of the Freddy's Nightmares television show, we thought it would be a great place to start! As the episode title indicates, the resulting recording did not go the way we expected. But we think it's a very fun conversation, particularly for long-time listeners. So we hope everyone has fun with this minisode, and as always: thanks so much for listening!!
Happy Holidays! It's that time of year again, and unfortunately we were a bit short on time due to the scale of Episode 19 (the first part of our Nightmare on Elm Street retrospective). So although we didn't quite have enough time to put together a four-movie episode like last year, we wanted to get a minisode in before the holiday season was over. And what better movie to do than a bonafide horror classic? For this year's holiday minisode, we're reviewing the original Black Christmas from 1974, and we're joined by a very special guest! Ed Brisson has written comics for both of the Big Two, and his work spans both superheroes (New Mutants, X-Force, Ghost Rider) and crime (The Violent, The Last Contract), but he's also a big fan of the horror genre. We'd been looking for an excuse to ask Ed to come on the pod for a while, so when we found out Black Christmas was a bit of a holiday tradition for him, we knew this was the perfect time! We hope everyone enjoys the episode, but more importantly we hope everyone has a happy, healthy and safe holiday season, and we wish everyone the best in 2022. And as always, thanks so much for listening!! You can check out Ed's website for more details on his work (and also pick up some comics from his shop!) at the link below: http://www.edbrisson.com/
We're back with Part 2 of Episode 19! And for the next two movies, we're joined by two very special guests! Hailey Piper is the author of fabulous horror works such as Queen of Teeth, The Worm and His Kings and much more, and has cited Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors as her favorite slasher. So we're delighted she came onto our show to discuss this fan-favorite franchise installment. For The Dream Master, we're joined by Steve Foxe, the author of several works in both comics and prose (including co-writing the horror thriller Party & Prey from Aftershock Comics) and co-editor of the horror magazine Razorblades. Steve is doing amazing work in the horror field, and we had a great time chatting with him about one of his favorite franchises. Please visit the websites of our special guests for more details on their work: www.haileypiper.com www.stevefoxe.com And as always, thanks for listening! TIMECODES: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors = 00:00:47 A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master = 01:48:55 CW: the Elm Street movies include plot points and/or themes involving child endangerment, sexual assault and suicide, so those topics are likewise mentioned in our discussion.
We asked twitter which major horror franchise we should review on the pod, A NIghtmare on Elm Street won, so your wish is our command! For Episode 19 we're reviewing the first four installments of the franchise, then we'll review the second half of the franchise in Episode 20. Unsurprisingly this turned out to be our longest episode yet once we put everything together, so we had to split it in half to get it under our podcast platform's time limit! Here in Part 1, we're reviewing the first two installments: the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, and its sequel A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. And for the latter, the fabulous partner of one of our hosts makes their first appearance on the podcast! Part 2 of this episode (covering Dream Warriors and The Dream Master) will be going up in just a few days, but we hope you enjoy this first half. And as always, thanks so much for listening! TIMECODES: A Nightmare on Elm Street = 00:01:12 A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge = 01:42:19 CW: the Elm Street movies include plot points and/or themes involving child endangerment, sexual assault and suicide, so those topics are likewise mentioned in our discussion.
The Paranormal Activity series is back! Just in time for Halloween, the seventh installment titled "Next of Kin" began streaming on Paramount Plus. Having covered the six prior installments in our podcast's second episode, we were very excited to see this new addition. Even moreso when we found out writer Christopher Landon was returning to the series, and William Eubank (Underwater) was directing! Check out the review to see whether the movie lived up to expectations, and we hope you enjoy the review. And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
Happy Halloween!! We're currently working on the first part of our Nightmare on Elm Street franchise review, but that's not going to be out for a bit and we didn't Halloween to pass without a special bonus episode. And what better movie to discuss than the movie that basically saved last year's Halloween for our hosts? A movie that at this time has no name? Well we know its name: The Mortuary Collection! (this is just the first of many, MANY Highlander references in the episode, so buckle up) If you haven't seen The Mortuary Collection yet, it's currently streaming on Shudder as of the time of this upload. This movie was an absolute delight for us to watch, and likewise an absolute delight for us to discuss. We hope you enjoy the episode, but more importantly we hope you have a happy and safe Halloween. And as always, thanks for listening!
Remember that universe-ending finale from our last episode? Well, our resident "favorite human" released a new Netflix series, so we need to set that cliffhanger aside for a bit. Mike Flanagan is the first filmmaker we ever covered for a podcast spotlight episode, and we've covered all of his horror features at various points. While we were planning on doing an eventual episode on his Netflix shows, after seeing the newly-released Midnight Mass series, we knew we had to do a reaction episode as soon as possible. This is a creator we love doing a project he clearly loves, and we hope you enjoy listening to this rather effusive chat. And as always, thanks for listening!!
This episode has been a long time in the making. Even aside from the hiatus we took after Episode 17, this topic is one we had originally planned to do for Episode 5, however covid lockdown kept us from doing the episode as we'd originally intended, But it's finally here: our episode on horror comic adaptations! As longtime comic book fans, this is a topic we've been eager to do since the earliest days of our podcast. And we honestly couldn't be happier with how this episode turned out, particularly thanks to our wonderful guests. For the first movie in the episode, Nick chose Wes Craven's adaptation of Swamp Thing, and we were lucky enough to have comic writer Ram V (These Savage Shores, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr and current writer of Swamp Thing) join us to talk about it! For the second movie, Jake chose the first installment of the Blade series from 1998, where we were joined by the fabulous writer Danny Lore (Champions, Queen of Bad Dreams, Lunar Room and an upcoming Blade one-shot)! The third movie in the lineup is Brian Yuzna's adaptation of the rather notorious horror comic Faust: Love of the Damned. And lastly, we were joined by our longtime friend and fellow comic lover Bil White, who chose Guillermo Del Toro's adaptation of Hellboy as the fourth and final movie. We truly hope you enjoy the episode, and we cannot thank our special guests enough for their time and the wonderful conversations. After you've listened to the episode, please check out their work and websites listed below: https://www.ram-v.com/ https://dannylore.com/ And as always, thanks so much for listening! CW: the movie and source material for Faust: Love of the Damned contain plot points involving sexual assault, which are discussed in the review. TIMECODES: Swamp Thing = 00:08:41 Blade = 01:30:59 Faust: Love of the Damned = 03:29:00 Hellboy = 05:24:41
We're back!! After a bit of time off, we were all set to come back with a topic we've been wanting to do since before the pandemic (that episode's coming next week!), but along came a movie that needed to be discussed first. After all three of our hosts watched Malignant from director James Wan, we agreed it was perfect material for a "welcome back" minisode. Episode 18 is coming next week, and we hope you enjoy it as well! Thanks so much for being patient with us while we took a breather. And as always, thank you so much for listening!
Happy Doug Jones Day! We're releasing a special Doug Jones Day minisode for the second year in a row, and this year we're celebrating by reviewing Legion (2010). Although Doug Jones' role in the movie might be very, very brief, it's also very, very memorable, and we had a great time discussing the movie! This is our first episode back in studio since March of 2020, and although we ran into some audio issues, we hope you enjoy the discussion! In addition to Doug Jones Day, we're also celebrating the release of our new coffee!! Launching the same day as this episode, we've partnered with Rootless Coffee for a special branded coffee roast! This will only be available for a limited time, so order today at: https://rootlesscoffee.com/collections/partners/products/scary-stuff-podcast And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
After sixteen episodes, Nick decided it was time for a little order on this podcast. So he picked the Stepfather franchise for our topic for Episode 17! In this episode, we're reviewing all three movies of the original series as well as the 2009 remake. And we're joined by two very special guests! For the original Stepfather, we had a fantastic time talking to Preston Fassel (managing editor of the Daily Grindhouse and author of Our Lady of the Inferno). Then for the 2009 remake of The Stepfather, we're joined by actor/musician/podcaster Seth Adam Kallick, who starred in a movie we reviewed on our previous episode: Butterfly Kisses. You can order Preston's new novella The Despicable Fantasies of Quentin Sergenov wherever you get your books, and you can find Seth's music at sethadamkallick.bandcamp.com. And as always, thanks for listening!! TIMECODES: The Stepfather = 00:02:43 The Stepfather 2 = 01:56:27 The Stepfather 3 = 03:20:36 The Stepfather (2009) = 04:23:32
To follow-up our latest episode, and just in time for the limited edition blu-ray release from Second Sight, for our found footage bonus episode we're reviewing Lake Mungo! This is a movie has been a favorite of all three of our hosts for many years, and we're thrilled to finally discuss it on our podcast. And best of all, we're joined by special guest (who becomes a special MUSICAL guest before the episode is over): David Lawson Jr! We couldn't be more thrilled that Dave took some time to review a movie with us, and we hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording. And as always, thanks so much for listening!
Jake's time has finally come! As Scary Stuff's resident fan of found footage horror, Jake has put together a special quartet of movies for an episode dedicated entirely to that subgenre. It might have been a long wait to get here, but we couldn't be happier with the results. This is some of the most fun we've had recording an episode thus far. The first movie up is Devil's Pass (2013) from director Renny Harlin, the movie that gave birth to the "Too Stupid To Live" moment Jake discussed all the way back in Episode Two. Next up is Savageland (2015), a "mockumentary" style movie that all three of our hosts feel deserves much more attention. And to help spotlight it, author Gabino Iglesias (who's currently accepting submissions for an anthology of found-footage horror stories) was kind enough to come onto our pod to discuss it with us! We also have a special guest for our next movie: Butterfly Kisses (2018). For this one, we're joined by Trevor Henderson, a fabulous artist whose work decidedly reflects the influence of found footage horror. Lastly we review Found Footage 3D (2016), which is currently available on Shudder and makes for an interesting meta companion piece to Butterfly Kisses. We hope you have as much fun listening to this episode as we did recording it. We also hope you support our special guests: Gabino Iglesias has multiple works available on Amazon (our host Eric particularly recommends the novel Zero Saints), and Trevor Henderson offers prints of some of his works at https://trevorhenderson.format.com/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!! CW: some of the movies in the episode include references to self-harm and/or suicide, which are likewise mentioned in our discussions. TIMECODES: Devil's Pass = 00:12:14 Savageland (with Gabino Iglesias) = 01:39:14 Butterfly Kisses (with Trevor Henderson) = 03:09:57 Found Footage 3D = 04:34:49
Since we first started compiling potential topics for "if we ever start a podcast," one of the earliest entries was an episode based around interdimensional horror movies, which Nick dubbed "Piercing the Veil." With the release of the Scream Factory special edition of Event Horizon, this seemed like a perfect time for that theme! Our four movies are Event Horizon (which we hope you've seen before you hit "play," or the episode intro will be extra perplexing), Banshee Chapter, Mr. Jones (with special guest Justin Dow from Eerie Earfuls!) and The Void. What ensues is a lengthy chat about the original script for Event Horizon, some found-footage-ish horror, cinematic swiss cheese, the Jack Kirby Sandman and much much more. And you get to meet our new sponsor! We hope you enjoy the episode, and please also check out Eerie Earfuls which is a fabulous podcast. And as always, thanks so much for listening!! CW: both Event Horizon and Banshee Chapter have plot points involving suicide, which are discussed in the review. TIMECODES: Event Horizon = 00:05:51 Banshee Chapter = 02:00:23 Mr. Jones = 03:02:48 The Void = 04:21:12
Welcome to "Season Two" of the Scary Stuff Podcast! It's just over one year since we first launched our pod, so we're celebrating by going back to our zombie beginnings. For our very first episode, we reviewed the entire Return of the Living Dead franchise. So we're kicking off this next series of episodes with a zombie world tour, with each of our hosts picking one movie to review and then a twitter poll determined the fourth. Jake chose The Battery (2012, United States) from pod-favorite creator Jeremy Gardner (and if you haven't checked out After Midnight, his collaboration with Christian Stella, please please do!). Eric's pick is The Girl With All the Gifts (2016, United Kingdom), the adaptation of the novel from writer Mike Carey. Nick's selection is Little Monsters (2019, Australia), from director Abe Forsythe and starring the fabulous Lupita Nyong'o (and decidedly NOT Howie Mandel). For the fourth and final movie, the winner of the twitter poll was #Alive (2020, South Korea) which is currently available on Netflix. And Jake talks a bit about #Alive's parallel movie Alone as well! Frogsie didn't survive long enough to see this episode's release, but we hope YOU enjoy it. And as always, thanks for listening! TIMECODES: The Battery = 00:04:31 The Girl With All the Gifts = 01:31:27 Little Monsters = 03:00:30 #Alive = 04:04:52
This episode has been a long time coming. Then again, time is a frozen river (and also a lie) so maybe it hasn't been? Either way, if you heard our eighth episode, you know how much we adore the works of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Now that their latest feature Synchronic is widely available, we are thrilled to make it the subject of its own bonus episode. And even better, the fabulous David Lawson Jr. of Rustic Films came back on the pod to chat with us!!! This episode was a delight to record from front to back, and we hope you enjoy listening to it. And as always, thanks so much for listening!! **The interview portion with David Lawson Jr. begins at the 02:20:00 mark
