Welcome to Grit & Growth's masterclass on the effectiveness of small business interventions in emerging markets — with hard data to back it up. Thanks to researcher Stephen J. Anderson's studies with African entrepreneurs, you'll hear why having a coach, getting classroom training, and learning how to delegate can drive growth and impact your bottom line.Stephen J. Anderson has spent his entire career trying to bring rigorous research to international development efforts, whether at the World Bank, Stanford Graduate School of Business, or his current post at McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin.Anderson makes his case for research on the effectiveness of growth interventions. He explains, “In the development sector someone says, “I have this great program,” and then they show you the best cases. But did this program or intervention really lead to that increase in firm sales and profits? I can't just cherry-pick or look at it anecdotally.”Top Six Masterclass Research-Based Takeaways Remote coaching works. The study of 930 Ugandan businesses proved that those companies that received coaching over six months increased sales, profits, and employment — by up to 50 percent!Coaching on your value proposition had the biggest effect. Anderson advises entrepreneurs to ask themselves, “What am I offering? Who am I offering it to? And why should they buy from me?” Think about your business model, think about the strategic shifts that you might have to make in the value proposition. Coaching or access to coaching can help you do that.In-person classroom training increases profits. The study of small firms in South Africa showed that those who received training — whether finance & accounting or marketing — increased profits by about 25 to 30 percent. Networking with other entrepreneurs enhances learning. “We're social beings,” explains Anderson, “and we still want to network. I learn a concept, I take it out to my business. I come back a week later and share what worked and what didn't work. I'm also going to hear from 10 or 15 other entrepreneurs. And so I'm going to learn the theory from whatever the instructor's telling me, but I'm also going to learn practically from others.” Entrepreneurs need to delegate to scale. Anderson's study of hundreds of businesses in Nigeria proved that to scale up, you need to let go. Anderson says, “Providing entrepreneurs with access to the expertise they need, that they can insource or outsource, grows the team, the managing team, and eventually grows the sales and profits of those firms.”Try not to hire family or friends. Anderson urges entrepreneurs to think hard before they hire and to look for ways to professionalize their workforce with the specific skills they really need to grow the business.Hear more about how Anderson's research can be the basis for more effective entrepreneurship programs across the world and apply his findings to your own entrepreneurial journey.Research Links:Pathways to Profits: the Impact of Marketing vs Finance Skills on Business Performance, by Stephen J. If you're in Japan and are interested in investing in the US, or vice-versa, this is the episode you need! You're in luck because for today's episode we have Stephen J Anderson, the Commercial Attache' for the US Embassy in Japan, and he's here to discuss how his line of work turn opportunities into realities, and make sure that the people beginning on their ventures are properly guided and aware of the details of the environment they're entering for their start-ups, be it from Japan to the US or the other way around. This episode will give you a background on the Japanese setup, relationship with the US, and a glimpse of what ventures may be best to consider when targeting Japan as your businesses' next location. Stephen also discusses how he entered the foreign service and what it's like representing the United States abroad. Business Culture in JapanJapanese culture and technological advancements have always been hand-in-hand regardless of how fast the future comes for their country. In this episode, Stephen discusses some of the key points that investors need to be aware of when trying to strike a deal with Japanese businessmen. Say, for example, the fact that not having gone out for lunch with a Japanese businessman means it's impossible to even scratch a deal with them. Aside from the cleanliness and punctuality, it seems the samurai values of honor and respect are also well-preserved as one of the key values that the Japanese look for in foreigners as a sign to do business. As much as the Japanese look very reserved with their culture, they actually are very knowledgeable about different cultures as well, most especially with their country of interest when investing. Stephen also discusses how he entered the foreign service and what it's like representing the United States abroad. The Big Mundane ThingsAs much receiving calls for help with missing passports can seem less important, it's these “mundane” seeming things that are very important, especially in terms of national security, that make Stephen's job highly crucial. Although, even if he's a part of the Embassy in Japan, his passion for businesses and being able to guide investors to what ins and outs they need to know about make his work feel less taxing. Even just having to get a document notarized may prove to be problematic for regular people and not much of a big deal for him, he acknowledges that this line of work is one of the biggest reasons why the Embassy is truly necessary. This line of work has allowed him to further polish his skills in realizing business opportunities that are only supposedly concepts or looking for potential markets that are not yet being targetted by other people/locals. About Stephen J Anderson:Stephen Anderson serves as Commercial Attache at U.S. Embassy Tokyo. Qualified in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese, he completed overseas tours in Asia at Beijing, Nagoya, Bangkok and Tokyo. He also served at the U.S. Export Assistance Center in Baltimore, and had a 4-year posting as Commercial Counselor in Dublin, Ireland. Prior to government with his doctorate from MIT, Anderson was a research professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and International University of Japan. At the U.S. Department of Commerce, Anderson has been a global manager promoting U.S. trade and foreign investment in America.Outline of the Episode:[01:50] About Stephen J Anderson and his background[04:45] Point-of-contact for business in Japan[07:50] How to become a foreign service officer[10:15] Stephen's background on overseas living[13:34] Angles to consider when choosing where to invest[17:14] How to navigate your investments through the pandemic [19:28] Importance of cultural clues when doing business[20:47] How a commercial attache' supports businesses[21:58] The USA-Japan business relationship[25:19] Forecasts of which opportunities will open in Japan[27:38] Locality as a challenge to being foreign business-ready in Japan[28:59] Decongesting cities to economize rural areas[30:12] Small towns as startup areas for digital nomads[33:20] Where to start when putting up a business in Japan[35:16] The real function of a US Embassy officeResources:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephenjanderson2012Article: https://web.mmac.org/events/Lunch-w-the-Japanese-Commercial-Attache-Stephen-Anderson-855/detailsConnect with Aaron Masliansky!Website: https://www.therealestatediplomat.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaron-mas...Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/63384...Twitter: https://twitter.com/aaronmasliansky

It is then Lewis meets young time-traveler named Wilbur Robinson who tells him he needs to fix the Memory Scanner or it would screw up the space time continuum forever. Lewis needs convincing that Wilbur is from the future so Wilbur whisks Lewis away in his time machine. The boys spend a day in the future with Wilbur's eccentric family and learn what really makes family all while being pursued by a mysterious sinister man in a bowler hat.○ Trivia: i. Started as a live action projectii. After their agreement with Pixar expired, Disney formed the new Walt Disney Animation Studios, of which this is the first film.iii. After reading the screenplay, director Stephen J. Anderson actively lobbied to direct this movie. As a child of adoption himself, Anderson personally experienced many of the emotions (questions about belonging, being wanted, etc) that Lewis expresses in the film. iv. The character of Lewis was voiced by both Daniel Hansen and Jordan Fry. Daniel Hansen voiced Lewis at the beginning of the film's production, but had to be recast when his voice “broke” and when Lewis needed things changed, they had Jordan Fry re-dub some segments. It is noticeable in some parts of the movie.v. The Robinsons' topiary garden is inspired by Walt Disney World. Large, intricate topiaries (generally of Mickey and other easily recognizable characters) have long been a staple of Disney World. Also, the Robinsons' garden features colored circular "bounce" pads; during the scenes where the characters bounce on these, they bounce in the same way as the "jumping" fountains outside the Imagination! pavilion at Epcot (which also jump from colored circles).vi. Director Stephen J. Anderson and actor Ethan Sandler voiced a significant amount of the cast between them. Many of these characters interact; consequently, the two spent much time in voice-over sessions together. Stephen played Bowler Hat Guy / Grandpa Bud / Tallulah and Ethan played Doris / CEO / Spike / Dmitri / Laszlo / Fritz / Petuniavii. When Wilbur is revealing his family, he says his dad looks like Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck indeed provides the voice for Wilbur's Dad.viii. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyfGqNow4lI● Segment: This week in Disney history “Once Upon a Time”○ June 15 2018 - Incredibles 2 was released after a long wait.○ June 16, 1955- Disney's 15th animated feature film Lady and the Tramp has its world premiere in Chicago.
