What's up, Goobs. As the Wilderness Years draw towards an end, film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers go back to the future with 2007's time-travelling oddity Meet The Robinsons. And they're joined by special guest Al Horner, who has his very own peculiar history with what might be *the* defining Wilderness movie. Together, they discuss the oddest Robinsons, discover the joy of ‘crogs', and discuss Walt Disney's vision of a ‘great big beautiful tomorrow'. Plus, Sam unpicks the insane lore of the spin-off game, there's a spot of actual time travel, and Ben ponders the big question: who, exactly, is Pete Robinson? The future has arrived! Episode SummaryErin and Rachel travel to a frenetic future to discuss Meet the Robinsons (2007), a fever dream of a film that performed poorly at the box office despite intervention from John Lasseter, newly seated Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Sexist and fatphobic content are only minimally present, but that doesn't mean Erin and Rachel enjoyed this chaotic whirlwind of characters and colors any more than the critics who panned it in 2007. In a special episode of the 'Cast, director/writer/storyboard artist Stephen Anderson returns to discuss his must-own new book DISNEY IN-BETWEEN, a fascinating fly-on-the-wall retrospective of the 20-year stretch at Walt Disney Studios when artists and production heads struggled to find their feet in the wake of Walt's death. Stephen recounts his painstaking research and in-depth interviews with the many luminaries who experienced such a transitional period at Disney firsthand, and gives us a new appreciation of the live-action and animated films that defined it.
On this edition of Pop Goes the Classics, Mirandia Berthold, Andy Atherton, and Steve Riddle travel to the future as they discuss the 47th Disney Animated Film, Meet the Robinsons. Join the trio as they discuss where they were in March 2007, the film being a spiritual tribute to Walt Disney; Lewis' determination to meet his mother; Bowler Hat Guy being the most cartoonish villain to date; meeting the eccentric and outlandish Robinson Family; singing frogs; whether Goob really is a sympathetic character; breaking the rules of time travel; the anti-climatic ending to DOR-15 and if the film deserves more appreciation than it currently gets. So join Mirandia, Andy, and Steve as they continue their journey through the Disney Animated Canon and always remember, Keep Moving Forward.

It's WHAT WOULD WALT HAVE DONE? MONTH on Escape From Vault Disney, as we devote March 2024 to movies, featurettes and/or TV specials produced by Walt Disney Productions during that odd, awkward inbetween time from 1968-1984, after Walt died but before Eisner took over! And for our first episode of What Would Walt Have Done? Month, we're joined by the man who literally wrote the soon-to-be-released book on that era, Meet the Robinsons director Stephen Anderson! And for our topic, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1977, the summer when Star Wars had the unmitigated audacity to dominate the box office 35 years before Disney owned it. The only competition Disney had that summer was a Herbie sequel and an animated talking mice movie, so the Disney execs thought "Hey, y'know what Walt would've done? He would've paired the animated talking mice movie with a 48 minutes of documentary-style footage of a bear and a raccoon in the woods just kinda wandering around, narrated by an obscure country singer who, for thoroughly unclear reasons, is named 'Mayf Nutter.' That'll steer audiences away from Luke Skywalker blowing up the Death Star for sure!" Are you starting to understand why Disney struggled in the 70s? Oo-de-lally, what a day! Jonny and Darin venture into Sherwood Forest to discuss the anthropomorphic action of Disney's ROBIN HOOD, with special guest Stephen J. Anderson, director of MEET THE ROBINSONS and WINNIE THE POOH! (I know, right?) Listen as they get to reminiscin' and this-n-thattin' about the 1970s as a transitional period for Walt Disney Animation, and the character designs that made ROBIN HOOD such a furry phenomenon. Then get ready for a full-on geek-out session about Mr. Anderson's seminal work as an animator and story supervisor on TARZAN, THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE, and BROTHER BEAR.
Released during a period with increased competition from rival studios, Meet the Robinsons marks a transitional period in Disney's approach to animated feature films. The company had just bought Pixar and appointed John Lasseter as chief creative officer. Meet the Robinsons was already nearing completion when this occurred, but Lasseter had at least 60% of the film redone before it debuted in theaters to mild critical response and disappointing box office. While frequently written off as a minor entry in the Disney catalog, the massive size and reach of the Mouse ensured that Meet the Robinsons was nonetheless seen by thousands of people. It would unavoidably become the beloved childhood favorite of a plurality of Gen Z people, one of whom joins Ryan and Rachel to talk about how and why. Kate, making her debut here, waxes nostalgic about how Meet the Robinsons affected her collegiate career and her time working at Disney parks as a young adult. Ryan talks about how Meet the Robinsons could potentially play into the sweeping long term plans of the Disney oligarchy. Disney, after all, has a long history of flops gradually attaining cult status and eventually getting reappraised into classic status. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ryan-valentine3/support

As the GameCube library dwindles 2006 and 2007 gave us many, many movie tie-ins. Happy Feet, The Ant Bully, Open Season, Barnyard, Surf's Up, Flushed Away, and Meet The Robinsons are the games Neil and Mike have the pleasure (or sometimes displeasure) of talking about on this penultimate episode. The story here is that most of these games are okay, but in reality, they probably never needed to be made in the first place. Alas this was the golden era of the movie tie-in and literally everything needed a game. There are some fun inclusions here like Surf's Up being a pretty fun and rare surfing sim on the GameCube, Barnyard turning out to be a pretty cool pseudo Open World game, and Meet the Robinsons being a Jimmy Neutron clone. All this and more on the second last episode of The GameCube Was Cool!

Let us introduce you to Meet the Robinsons, a 2007 Disney animated feature film that's way more chaotic than you'd expect. Lewis is a young orphan who's constantly inventing contraptions that backfire, and he's worried his obsession means he'll never be adopted. A mysterious boy takes him on a time travel adventure to the future, where he meets the wacky but loving Robinson family, learns that you can't have discovery without failure, and stops a villain literally called Bowler Hat Guy. We discuss a puppet wife, putting a steak on a black eye, custom-printed phone cases we found with screenshots from this movie, and having a big head and little arms. Spoiler free until 00:27:28! For this episode Andrew, Joel, and Steven take a look at Disney's Meet the Robinsons. Released to tepid critical and financial success, how well has this 2007 treat held up to the passage of time? Can a brilliant message and great humor writing carry 2007 CGI? Just how many jokes could they stuff into an hour and a half? Can the writers avoid the classic traps inherent in a plot relying on time travel? Will the character's eyes ever just sit still? Will our technical and entertainment scores ever diverge?! From the distant, curvy future of the 2030's two pop culture observers/zany podcast sidekicks/most excellent friends have put on their most outlandish leotard suits to give you some fun and maybe a little hope through a breakdown of time travel media. This episode is from our second recording session, back in September of 2020. The Pandemic put us on pause for seven months. We tried recording in person in Ben's backyard under the O'Hare bound flight path. While we still had a lot to learn, including recording remotely for the rest of the season, this was a great conversation. So, please put on your robot hats and enjoy this bonus recording and judge us by the other, better work we released prior to this. Ben is @Bsilverio20 on twitter and IG. Erin is @NYDErnGenC on IG. Ansel is @Indecisionist on Twitter and @TheIndecisionist on IG. Season Two is coming your way, starting in January. We've already got a couple episodes in the bag with special guest hosts Helena Handbasket and Ben Bilton. So, hold on tight because it's still Time 2 Party!

While trying desperately to relax two pop culture observers/zany podcast sidekicks/most excellent friends are here spill the Chernobly to give you some fun and maybe a little hope through a breakdown of time travel media. This episode is from our first recording session, back in February of 2020. We've learned so much since then, mostly not to drink along to the movie and then try to record. This was still a load of fun and we now present it to you as bonus content for the end of the year. So, please enjoy this secret pilot now available to the masses (who hopefully will judge us by the other work we've released prior to this).Ben is @Bsilverio20 on twitter and IG. Erin is @NYDErnGenC on IG. Ansel is @Indecisionist on Twitter and @TheIndecisionist on IG. Still to come this month are two episodes from our work on “Meet The Robinsons” recorded under an O'Hare bound flight path. So, make sure you're subscribed on your podcatcher of choice so you won't miss a second of Time 2 Party. Season Two is coming your way in January and we've already got a couple episodes in the bag with special guest hosts Helena Handbasket and Ben Bilton. One of my favorite parts about this show, and having my guests drive the movie choices, is the bounce from week to week. What other movie podcast goes from Friday the 13th to Disney family cartoon one week to the next? This one, that's what the hell one does. Sabina Graves returns for her third […]
This week, we sit down with the Robinsons and discuss twinning, La Brea (because why wouldn't we), and Haley's love of the sci-fi/fantasy genre. We also created a brand new musical which we swear is the next big thing.
