The RSA gang reached 500 subscribers, just hitting 800 as of recent, now they get to give you the fans a treat! One of the most iconic Walt Disney animated movies, Robin Hood! The gang promised you a Disney movie to celebrate hitting 500 subs, and they now are promising more Disney movies to come. Robin Hood is a 1973 American animated musical adventure comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution. Produced and directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it is based on the English folktale "Robin Hood". The story follows the adventures of Robin Hood, Little John, and the inhabitants of Nottingham as they fight against the excessive taxation of Prince John, and Robin Hood wins the hand of Maid Marian. The film features the voices of Brian Bedford, Phil Harris, Peter Ustinov, Pat Buttram, Monica Evans, Terry-Thomas, Roger Miller, and Carole Shelley. The idea to adapt Robin Hood into an animated feature was dated back to Walt Disney's interest in the tale of Reynard the Fox following the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The idea was repeatedly shelved for several decades. In 1968, Ken Anderson pitched a film adaptation of Robin Hood, incorporating ideas from Reynard the Fox by using anthropomorphic animals rather than humans. The project was approved, becoming the first completely "post-Walt" animated feature and the first with an entirely non-human cast. Robin Hood was released on November 8, 1973. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it was nonetheless a box-office success, grossing $33 million worldwide against a production budget of $5 million. Although some retrospective reviews have called out its use of recycled animation, the film's reputation has grown positively over time and has since become a cult classic.
Oo-de-lally, what a day! Jonny and Darin venture into Sherwood Forest to discuss the anthropomorphic action of Disney's ROBIN HOOD, with special guest Stephen J. Anderson, director of MEET THE ROBINSONS and WINNIE THE POOH! (I know, right?) Listen as they get to reminiscin' and this-n-thattin' about the 1970s as a transitional period for Walt Disney Animation, and the character designs that made ROBIN HOOD such a furry phenomenon. Then get ready for a full-on geek-out session about Mr. Anderson's seminal work as an animator and story supervisor on TARZAN, THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE, and BROTHER BEAR.
The Medfield gang is back with a movie that was near and dear to most of us - 1973's animated classic Robin Hood, directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, starring Brian Bedford, Phil Harris, and Peter Ustinov, and featuring some truly iconic Roger Miller songs. Why don't you sit and rest a spell as we discuss this peach's place in the Disney echelon? Nobody really likes Skippy, but that shouldn't hurt things too bad, right? And George "Goober" Lindsay is up in here, surely that will make Andy go bananas, right? I guess you'll just have to find out....
Disney is one of my favorite topics, and that's because it has played a huge role in my life. There are many stories I could tell about my experiences with Disney, but one, in particular, stands out. When we lived in California, my parents bought us a yearly pass to Disneyland. Each week, we'd go there for a family fun day—despite the fact that traffic often meant it would take us three to four hours to get there. I've always found Disney inspiring, and one of the most inspiring parts of this entertainment giant is the people who made it what it is today. Wolfgang “Woolie” Reitherman was one of those people, and he's who I would like to focus on today to see what we can learn from his life story. Join Ben, Sam, and Ryan as we discuss The Jungle Book, the 1967 American animated musical comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions. Based on Rudyard Kipling's 1894 book of the same name. Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it was the last film to be produced by Walt Disney, who died during its production. The plot follows Mowgli, a feral child raised in the Indian jungle by wolves, as his friends Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear try to convince him to leave the jungle before the evil tiger Shere Khan arrives! Seeing as we're in the bleak midwinter, film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic are back to take on Walt Disney Animation Studios' most deeply upsetting Dark Age movie yet: 1981's The Fox And The Hound. This time, we're delving into the devastating story of friends-turned-enemies Tod and Copper – exploring why the narrative cuts so deep, how it compares to Bambi, and discovering what happens in the even more horrifying source material. Plus, we dig into an especially turbulent time at the studio, as Don Bluth leads a mass Disney exodus, a whole host of major new names enter the fray, and a tussle over an improbably-named song leads to Wolfgang Reitherman quitting animation all together. All that, plus another stone-cold Disniversity legend, and a very special guest shares her own personal childhood trauma from this darkest of Disney flicks. Content warning: this episode contains graphic owl abuse. Next up: The Black Cauldron Disniversity is brought to you by Ben Travis (@benstravis) and Sam Summers (@samsummers0), with art by Olly Gibbs and music by Nafets. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @disniversity. This podcast is not affiliated with Disney. — Welcome to Disniversity, the podcast crash course through the history of Disney's animated classics, with film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Dr. Sam Summers. Each week, we'll be moving forward in time through the legendary Walt Disney Animation Studios catalogue, watching every feature film in chronological order – from Snow White to Encanto. Watch along with us, and listen as we explore each film's historical context, advances in animation and lasting legacy, and talk about how they stand up today.

Part two of our Arthurian Triptych has arrived! This time, we're discussing King Arthur and comedy, through the lens of two stone cold classics. Homework for the episode: The Sword in the Stone (1963, dir. Wolfgang Reitherman), Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975, dir. Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones)
Episode SummaryErin and Rachel unpack The Fox and the Hound (1981), the most expensive Disney animated film up to that point, due largely to conflict amongst the film makers. They discover that even a movie about the best of friends isn't immune to racism in the form of Black stereotypes and underlying messages about segregation. Episode BibliographyAssociated Press.
This week on the Total Movie Recall Holiday Special, Steve and Ryan visit the mopey, gothy early 90s when Generation X looked to the high school Gloom King Tim Burton to express their so dark vision of Christmas. Stop motion animation is such a labor intensive craft that creates beautiful visions that aren't all that interesting, which is going to enrage a bunch of high school Wiccans that love this movie. It does look great, though. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) d. Henry Selick Starring: Danny Elfman Chris Sarandon Catherine O'Hara William Hickey Paul Reubens The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown's beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the "real world." When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life -- he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role.

In one of Shakespeare’s lesser known outings, a king better known for his role as a villain in countless retellings of the legend of Robin Hood is a flawed hero fighting against the hated French! Amid the endless twists and turns of the plot, Will and James dissect the politics of foreign wars, nationalism, the Catholic Church, historical memory, and, of course, the Magna Carta and Carl von Clausewitz. // CREDITS // Intro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous); Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous); Illustrative Excerpts: “Robin Hood,” dir. ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 02/20/2020 Well ain't this appropriate? It's our 101st episode, so naturally we had to talk about the 1961 Disney animated classic "One Hundred and One Dalmatians." Featuring what may be the best villain of the classic Disney period and the first use of the xerox animation method they would implement for the next 20 years or so, the movie was made during the last stretch of Walt Disney's time. Featuring the voice talents of Rod Taylor, Betty Lou Gerson, Ben Wright and Cate Bauer and directed by Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, and Wolfgang Reitherman....you know, the big names!

We also do a rundown of what's coming to WDW in 2020 and honor one of Walt's Nine Old Men, Wolfgang Reitherman, in this week's Legends Corner.
Walt Disney had long been interested in telling the story of Reynard the Fox, but never could find the way to tell it that he thought would be palatable to kids. Because of that, it kept getting shelved. After Disney’s death, they finally found a way to integrate the anthropomorphic characters into an animated film. It wasn’t Reynard the Fox as it turned out but the story of Robin Hood. For people growing up in the 70s, this version of Robin Hood is often cited as the one that was the most influential as far as impressions of this tale. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Robin Hood series with Wolfgang Reitherman’s 1973 animated film Robin Hood. We talk about our memories of the film and whether it’s held up all these years later. We look at the characterizations of the main players and debate whether they should’ve been so simplistic or if it works just the way it was. We chat about the stellar cast and how everyone worked so well (even if we disagree about how Prince John is portrayed). We touch on the animation style that Disney was using at the time and how it affects this film. We look at where this film was pulling from for its references. And we realize that perhaps this film, Chicken Little, and Zootopia are all a part of the same cinematic universe. It’s Disney lite with this film, something that’s fun but also a bit forgettable. Still, we have a great time discussing it. Check it out then tune into this week’s show! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Discussion includes the finale of the Phil Harris Trilogy, Ken Anderson versus Wolfgang Reitherman, Maid Marion’s confusing familial connections and lots and lots of recycled animation.

White novel The Sword in the StoneIt is about the search for a successor to the British throne after the death of King Uther Pendragon. A sword is found embedded in a stone and anvil with an inscription that proclaims that whoever can pull the sword is to be the rightful king. Many try, but no one is able to pull the sword, and with the passage of time, it is forgotten. In the meantime, the boy Arthur, called “Wart” meets the wizard Merlin and his companion, the highly educated owl Archimedes, and with their guidance, learns the importance of education as well as valuable life lessons about justice through the use of Merlin’s magical shapeshifting powers. Acting as a squire, Wart finds the sword in the stone while looking for a sword for his brother Kay to use in a tournament, and, without knowing what it is, pulls the sword from the stone. When the identity of the sword is realized and it is discovered that Wart was the one who pulled it, he is made King - wiser and better equipped to rule using the lessons he learned from MerlinGeneral opinions on the movie Fun Facts: This film has been very confusing for many because it is based on the original 1938 novel The Sword in the Stone. 1958 rerelease as part of compilation. Original voice actor for Wart had to be replaced after he hit puberty during production - replaced with brothersFor the voice of Merlin, director Wolfgang Reitherman estimated that seventy actors read for the part, but "none evidenced that note of eccentricity that we were seeking. We wanted Merlin to be eccentric but not hokey." At the same time, Karl Swenson was initially cast for Archimedes, but the filmmakers decided to cast him instead as Merlin.Segment: This week in Disney history “Once Upon a Time”Dec 21, 1936 - Sharon MaeDec 21, 1937 - Snow White premiereDec 21, 2012 - Disney announces it has completed 4.06 billion deal to acquire LucasfilmDec 23, 1956: 1954: The Disney live-action film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (based on the classic story by Jules Verne) starring Kirk Douglas, James Mason, & Peter Lorre, is released.Dec 24, 1970:Disney's 20th animated feature The Aristocats is generally released.Dec 25, 1957: Disney's Old Yeller is released.Dec 25, 1963: Disney's 18th animated film The Sword In The Stone is released.Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”AladdinSegment: weekly top 4 (secret from each other)”Let’s get down to business”Top 4 Disney Christmas MoviesThe Santa ClauseLady and the TrampThe Nightmare Before ChristmasMuppet Christmas CarolHonorable Mention: Small One
Get your tissues ready! It's time to see if this movie is really as sad as we all think it is! This week Sarrah brings her husband Curtis to watch Disney's 1981 movie The Fox and the Hound with us - because he's never seen it! Aly does a biography on the author of the novel The Fox and the Hound, Daniel P. Mannix, who might just be the most interesting man in the world. We also learn that this movie is very loosely based on the book, as there is a lot more death in the novel. Perhaps not surprising in a novel about hunting, but it messed with Aly's head a bit. Sarrah gives us the lowdown on how this film marked a major turning point in studio history. A lot of the old guard animators left (goodbye Wolfgang Reitherman!), to be replaced with some new blood that you will recognize to be a big part of the upcoming Disney Renaissance. Our walkthrough has one of us admitting to shedding a few tears, discussion over the most useless subplot known to history, wondering if Widow Tweed really did Tod any favors, and finding our loyalties lie in surprising places. So grab those tissues and your best friend forever, and let's get ready for some education (to avoid elimination!). Podcast Music By: http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music
In this episode, professional animator Mark Kakuru and recurring guest Nick Muhereza join Sharon to pick their 3 best animated movies. We range from Wolfgang Reitherman "The Jungle Book", French-Iranian adult animated biographical film "Persepolis" and Pixars "Inside Out"
You may be wondering how a "mini" episode of We Want The D can be the length of a regular episode. Well D Lovers, the truth is these aren't mini episodes, they're Minnie Mouse-isodes, which are very different. In this installment, Vicky, Nolan and Jill dive back in to the history of the Disney company and the personalities who have helped shape it over the year. This week's subject is OG Nine Old Men member and plane metaphor enthusiast Wolfgang Reitherman.

"Such perfectly beautiful coats!"The Next Reel's Speakeasy is our ongoing series in which we invite an industry guest to join us and bring along one of their favorite movies to talk about. In this month's episode, we're honored to have two guests join us to discuss one of their favorite films – it's the Bancroft Brothers! That's right, twin brothers Tom and Tony Bancroft, both of whom are animators, are here to chat about Disney's 1961 classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians. We talk about why they picked this film and why this film is a key shift in the world of animation at Walt Disney Studios (hint: it involves xeroxing!). We look at the animators involved – Milt Kahl, Frank Thomas, Marc Davis, etc. – and how they all fit into the looks of characters like Cruella De Vil, Pongo, Perdita, Jasper, Horace and more, really bringing them to life. We discuss the importance of what art director/production designer Ken Anderson and color stylist Walt Peregoy did with the impressionistic backgrounds. We chat about what the film's three directors – Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske and Wolfgang Reitherman – did to bring the film together and how they likely split up tasks. We dig into the really amazing 3D modeling Ub Iwerks helped come up with to make Cruella De Vil's car look more realistic. And, of course, we can't talk about this movie without discussing Cruella's cheekbones, which we do.It's a fantastic conversation with two gentlemen who really know what they're talking about helping us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – sound like we know what we're doing. The conversation will really make you look at this movie and animation with so much more respect.
